3 The Petes wrapped up last weekend s play with a commanding 8-5 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs, having claimed a 5-3 victory over the Saginaw Spirit and falling 4-1 to the rival Generals on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Now, the top teams in the OHL s Eastern and Western Conferences face off for the only time at the PMC this season. The men in maroon will look to #StopTheSting, who are riding a 13-game win streak into Thursday s match-up. Over the past five season, the Petes are against the Imperial City team, including a 2-3 record on home ice. Sarnia defeated Peterborough 6-1 the last time the clubs met on October 20, Overage players Nikita Korostelev and Alex Black will face their former club for the first time since being acquired by the Petes on December 31, 2016 in a trade that sent defenceman Nick Grima and six picks to Sarnia. Likewise, Grima will make his first appearance at the PMC since the blockbuster deal. Special teams were the story for the maroon and white on Sunday, but they ll want to stay disciplined throughout the game, as Sarnia s power play is operating at the second-best efficiency in the league. Logan DeNoble is leading the team both on and off the ice, with 11 goals, 9 assists, 20 points, and a plus/minus rating of +7. Adam Timleck has been a consistent presence for the club, playing at a point-per-game pace recording 7 goals, 9 assists, 20 points, and a plus/minus rating of +7. A key component in Sarnia s hot streak has been the play of goaltender Justin Fazio and forward Justin Kyrou. Fazio, the OHL s Goaltender of the Month for October, has recorded 8 straight wins with a 2.48 goals against average and.939 save percentage. Kyrou, the OHL s Player of the Month for October, lead the league with 12 goals, 13 assists, and 25 points in 12 games. He recorded points in 11 of 12 contests, and had three consecutive three-point outings. The Petes will attempt to break Sarnia s streak while defending a streak of their own - they ve won seven straight at the PMC. Rookie Nick Robertson is expected to return after suffering an injury in practice last week, while Zach Gallant and Nick Isaacson are sidelined with injuries. 4 LEARNING FROM A LEGEND JONATHAN ANG & HIS TEN YEARS WITH DAWN BRAID By Shelbi Kilcollins The first thing you note when you watch Jonathan Ang play hockey, is his skating. The Petes veteran and 2017/18 assistant captain is swift and consistently walks around other team s defensemen without qualms. He effortlessly drives the net and has incredible vision in the offensive end, putting himself in perfect position on power plays and finding prime scoring opportunities in the slot. His speed and agility was rewarded in the 2016/17 season when Ang was named the Eastern Conference s Best Skater in an OHL coaches poll, improving upon his runner up position from the previous year. Ang is a real treat for any hockey enthusiast, however his onice finesse is not a fluke but rather a product of countless hours of training with skating coach Dawn Braid. Braid has built a reputation for producing some of the world s most powerful skaters and is a legend in the hockey community. She is the first female to coach full-time in the NHL, hired by the Arizona Coyotes as their skating coach, and has been a previous consultant for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres and Calgary Flames. She has acquired such renowned status in the hockey community, garnering new clients based largely from word of mouth and testimonials. Ang began his work with Braid at ten years old and trained with her every summer, once a week for an hour and fifteen minutes, each session. In response to what makes her coaching successful, Jonny responded with, Just the way she teaches and the way she understands the aspect of skating. She knows what being a good skater looks like but not only going in a straight line, she teaches different things that can be used all over the ice. The different edges, protecting the puck, and just being more efficient when skating. Braid has been an active member in Ang s development into an elite athlete and notes his continuous dedication to improvement, He was always a great student, always wanted to learn always wanted to get better going on to say He was really good trusting in me, he spent a lot of time working with me, he s one of my strongest skaters. In reflecting upon what separates Jonny from the pack Braid stated, Mentally his maturity was above so many other players, he knew what he wanted and he was willing to do the work when he got there. 5 Continued from Page 7 The eight years of training with Braid didn t go unrecognized for Ang as he was selected by the Florida Panthers in the fourth round of the NHL 2017 Entry Draft and his skating technique was continuously highlighted among scouting reports. He s a well rounded skater, he skates very low. He s slightly bow legged, which is sometimes helpful in generating power. The combination of getting stronger, having the proper techniques, creating really good habits, turned him into a good skater, explained Braid. Although he does not know him personally, Ang draws inspiration for his game from Sidney Crosby. To prep for a game, the Petes assistant captain typically begins with a morning trip to the rink, followed by a stretch, pre-game skate, returning home for a rest (Jonny insists he does not nap) and a meal. There are superstitions woven into this routine, however he keeps those idiosyncrasies closed in a vault. Ang has started off the season strong, garnering 18 points in 16 games. His calmness with the puck and edge work continues to serve his stats line and the Petes scoreboard well. On this trajectory, Ang can soon be added to the list of superstars Braid has helped produce. 8 PeterBio: Part 1 DAVE POGUE Mike Lacey/Peterborough This Week Three weeks had passed since Mitchell Pogue had taken his own life. His father, Dave, had spent those days sitting on a chair and staring out the window of his Bridgenorth home. You re kind of numb, he now remembers. He had done nothing since his son s death. He once thought that if he didn t show up to EG Gray Transports, his trucking company would grind to a halt. Yet not only did he not show up, he gave it barely thought. However, he realized he had a choice. He could either continue sitting in the chair, feeling sorry for himself, or he could try to begin moving on with life. He choose to move on. The next morning, he tried to ease back into his routine.he woke up at 5:30 a.m. like he had previously done. He went downstairs. He put TSN on the television and he jumped onto the treadmill. 9 Continued from Page 14 It was fall, the starting of the NFL. Mitchell loved football, Pogue remembers. He was angry, still, about what happened. Angry at his son. Angry at himself for not seeing the signs. Angry that it happened. After all, Mitchell appeared to be a strong, healthy young man who had a full life ahead of him and a one-year-old son at home. Yet that was the outside, what he let everyone see. And then a commercial came on for the Purolator Tackles Hunger program. (And I thought) maybe this whole suicide thing, maybe there is a way we could tackle this and just stop it.. He called Mitchell s high school football coaches to see what he thought they could do. He talked to his wife Heather As he talked to more and more people, the idea morphed into what we know today as Team55: Let s Tackle Suicide Awareness, using Mitchell s former jersey number. It has not only raised money for suicide awareness, but it has allowed people to feel comfortable to speak out about the struggles they face. What do you do for a living? It s a simple question. But for Pogue, it s not necessarily a simple answer. Yet those are roles on top of his day job, which is somewhat difficult to define nowadays. Perhaps property manager would fit? He owns a number of commercial and rental properties in the area. Previously, he worked in the trucking industry, starting out with Haig Kelly when he graduated from Fleming College, eventually taking on the role of manager at E.G. Gray Transport before purchasing the company in Yet he sold the business in 2014, keeping only the warehousing sector. 11 Continued from Page 17 He owns Peterborough Cold Storage and Logistics Plus Warehousing. He doesn t even mention (or simply forgot that he once worked in radio or was the owner/developer of Black Diamond Golf Course). In fact, he currently owns the former Baskin Robbins property in downtown Peterborough. While it s being used for storage, in the next few years he is hoping to tear it down and redevelop the site. So perhaps you could add developer to his job title. It s something I haven t done before, he says of the plan, adding what exactly will take shape on the site is still up in the air. It s all about revitalizing downtown Peterborough. I guess I m a property manager, he says with a laugh.he also farms three properties alongside his son, Damon. Pogue grew up on land on Lindsay Road, near Chemong Road. He was the youngest of three. His two sisters are eight and 11 years older. Upon graduating from Crestwood Secondary School, he left his hometown to go to McMaster University. Yet he suffered a career-ending knee injury in football rookie camp and left the school. He realized he only went so he could play football and, with his football career over, he saw little point in remaining. Instead, he returned to Peterborough and enrolled at Fleming College. Upon graduation, Kelly hired him on as accountant and his career in the trucking industry was set. Read Part 2 of this story in Saturday s program!
