He has an record, and is tied for the league lead in shutouts (3). Expect Dylan Wells to get the start opposite DiPietro, after rookie Hunter Jones got the call in Wednesday s match up. The Petes are in the thick of a jam packed week of games that began on December 28 in Guelph, and will wrap up in Ottawa on Saturday. Thursday s home game against the Windsor Spitfires will be Peterborough s fifth of six games in a ten day stretch. While the Petes fell 7-2 to the conference-leading Bulldogs in Hamilton on Wednesday night, the reigning MasterCard Memorial Cup champion Spitfires are preparing for an Eastern Conference road swing - they ll visit the Frontenacs in Kingston on Friday, and take on the 67 s in Ottawa on Sunday afternoon. As can be expected from a team after winning one of hockey s most prestigious trophies, Windsor s lineup is far different from the one they iced during the Mem Cup tournament, with just eight of the same players on their roster today. Some graduated from the league, while others have been traded. The Spits traded defenceman Logan Stanley to Kitchener for five picks; they sent their then-leading goal scorer, Aaron Luchuk, to the Barrie Colts for Curtis Douglas and three picks; and, in recent days sent the combo of Gabe Vilardi and Sean Day to Kingston for Cody Morgan and a whopping eight picks. Other key departures included Maple Leafs prospect Jeremy Bracco, OA Adam Laishram, and Canadiens prospect Mikhail Sergachev. Despite the differences in their roster, the Spitfires sit comfortably in fifth place in the Western Conference, only eleven points out of second spot, with three games in hand. Their success can, in large part, be contributed to the play of their starting goaltender, Michael DiPietro. The third year Spit, Third year forward Cole Purboo leads the team offensively, with 12 goals, 21 assists, and 33 points in 35 games this season. Nikita Korostelev extended his scoring streak to seven games with a goal and assist on Wednesday night; he now has points in 14 of his last 15 games. Off the ice, Thursday s game is sponsored by Tim Hortons and will include tons of great Tim Hortons giveaways to lucky fans in attendance. More than 300 Peterborough Minor Hockey Council (PMHC) players will take in the game with their teammates and families. PMHC representatives will take part in a pre-game ceremonial puck drop. Fans are invited to take part in the second intermission chuck-a-puck, the proceeds from which will directed to the PMHC. Local businesses and organizations who are taking part in the 2018 Petes Playoff Push Rinkboard Draw will also be in attendance. In the first intermission, one of the participating organizations will be announced as the winner of a free rinkboard advertisement valued at $2,000. Finalists in the 2018 Snofest Idol contest will be providing entertainment in the arena s main lobby before the game. Finalist Amy Sarginson will perform the national anthem. 4 Protecting Other Petes: Delivering a Message of Anti-Bullying with CMHA & Crime Stoppers By Shelbi Kilcollins The assumption tends to stand that hockey players work takes place on the ice or in the gym. However, like other amateur and professional athletes, the Petes participate in community events at a frequency much greater than most could guess. From celebrity serving nights and minor hockey visits to post-game skates and sponsor launches, the Petes wear many more hats than just their helmets, serving as role models for many in Peterborough and beyond. Established as one of the hallmark events offered by the Petes is their interactive anti-bullying presentation offered in collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association and Crime Stoppers. In exchange for a purchase of fifty discounted tickets by the school, two Petes players, Bunraku puppeteers from the CMHA, and Crime Stoppers Ian Maxwell and Dave Putner orchestrate a show discussing bullying and methods to combat it. Initiating the show is Ryan Bird, Petes Coordinator of Game Operations and Community Events, who emcees the entire affair, tying together students, puppets and players. To begin the show, Ian reviews the various forms of bullying engaging with students on how they think bullying presents itself. At the end of the conversation, four types of bullying are revealed: emotional, mental, physical and verbal. 5 Continued from Page 7 (dressed as a Pete) puppet, and a dialogue describing their various encounters with bullies and individuals responses unfold. Also touched on in the discussion is an individual s circle of trust as a network of friends, teachers and teammates that you can confide in when you are being victimized. The puppets also ask for advice from the Petes duo that sit in front of the crowd and directly beside them throughout the show. Its to build community to empower them, I think the Petes are incredible role models you can just see in the faces of all these children how much they respect and look up to them. So when they hear these messages about bullying coming from the Petes, and being reinforced by them I believe it really has an impact with them, explains Arlene. When the puppets are done their piece, Ian Maxwell ignites the conversation with students again, rewarding those who have correct answers to questions reflecting the themes of the presentations, with prizes. Unsurprisingly students tend to ask hockey directed questions to the players, who are thrilled to speak with the kids. The finale includes a chance to meet and high five or dab one of the Petes and receive a signed player card to take home. Although events like this seem distant from the action on the ice, they connect Petes with the community and evolve their responsibility as hockey players from the rink to the larger population. 9 Hockey and esports Collide in PMC s East Lobby By Shelbi Kilcollins In the east lobby of home games you can find a crowd of ecstatic children hovering around three big screens between each period. Integrating the world of esports and hockey to evolve fans game night experience, the Peterborough Petes are collaborating with Retro s esports to bring video games to the rink. Set up near the visitors change room are two arcade and one computer based game, custom-built by Retro esport s Bar. Retro s is a themed esports lounge and bar located on Simcoe St. in Peterborough. In response to its inaugural season Hanningan stated, Kids are absolutely loving it, Smash Brothers is a huge hit, probably all the iconic players. 12 Continued from Page 21 Although the arena appears to be a foreign location to have Smash Brothers, it should be unsurprising that the esports industry is infiltrating stadiums beyond their own tournaments, when the industry broke 1 billion dollars in revenue in As the popularity and increased competitiveness of esports grow, the stereotype of who is playing and any negative stereotypes continue to dwindle, Being good at video games, there shouldn t be a stigma. The games are available to be played for free by Petes fans twenty minutes before puck drop, as well as throughout each period and intermission. Although Smash Brothers is a permanent fixture in Retro s setup, the two games featured on the arcade machines rotate each Petes game to expose fans to a variety of esports. Retro s esports Bar, which opened in 2017 by the bus terminal on Simcoe St., is open for gaming enthusiasts of all ages. Over 200 members enjoy their classic and modern gaming options, with food and drinks available as well.
