3 The Petes return to the PMC ice on Thursday night after a disheartening loss to the Eastern Conference s (now) topranked Hamilton Bulldogs. On a positive note, despite their recent defeat, the maroon and white are just one point out of top spot in the East. Thursday, the Petes look to add two points to the win column as they face off against the rival Oshawa Generals. The clubs have met each other twice in the season, with each team winning in their home rink Peterborough won 5-2 on September 28, while the Gens took October 27 s game 4-1. Home ice has proven to be extremely advantageous to the Petes, who have won nine of eleven home games thus far; they ve outscored their opponents in those wins. The Memorial Centre has treated the Petes favourably against the Gens historically, as well - Peterborough has an record versus the GTA team since the season. The Gens will arrive in Peterborough with purpose, having dropped their last five games. That being said, the teams share an identical record in their last ten games. Fourth year centre Jonathan Ang continues to lead the Petes in scoring and sits fifth in the league - he s recorded 12 goals, 18 assists and 30 points in 22 games played, and has had 4-point performances in 3 of his last 6 games. For Oshawa, sophomore forward Allan McShane leads the way with 8 goals, 16 assists and 24 points in 20 games played, including a hat-trick against the Ottawa 67 s on November 10. Off the ice, the Petes are excited to introduce electronic 50/50 ticket sales. Tickets are available for 3 for $5, 10 for $10, or 40 for $20 from stationary and mobile sellers throughout the rink. Proceeds raised will be directed to the Petes Education Fund. Before the game, CARSTAR Peterborough, the game s sponsor, will announce that they will be providing Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peterborough with a soon-to-be refurbished vehicle to assist the agency in delivering and supporting their programs. Fans are also invited to support the Osteoporosis Society of Peterborough through a second intermission chuck-a-puck. There are great prizes up for grabs for the top three puck tossers, including a winter emergency car kit, Petes merchandise, essential oils, outdoor gear, a gift card, and more. Pucks will be available in the north and east lobbies. Operation Christmas Child will be distributing and collecting shoeboxes in the north and east lobbies in support of their annual campaign. In preparation for his game, Isaacson holds a strict routine laced with superstitions, including withholding the application of clear tape around his socks until after the on-ice warmup. NICK ISAACSON TOUGH ON THE ICE, SMOOTH IN THE AIR By Shelbi Kilcollins Contrary to the younger half of the roster, Nick Isaacson is built like a typical hockey player, standing 6 2 and weighing 181 lbs in his second year with the Petes. Much like Milan Lucic, Isaacson uses his size to his advantage while playing, winning battles along the boards, and generating a physical presence in front of the net. Although Isaacson s few tilts resemble that of Lucic s, his style of play is starkly contrasted by his soft spoken temperament. PAGE 6 The average game day for Nick starts with a 9:30 am on-ice session, followed by breakfast, a nap, postsleep snacks and relaxation until he returns to the rink. Isaacson admires Wells work ethic and how he prepares himself for game day stating, Wellsy is the hardest working guy on the team, he prepares himself the most. In his second full season with the Petes, Isaacson is looking forward to contributing to the game sheet at a higher frequency from his previous year, I was a rookie, I was new to the league so I obviously didn t play a whole lot. I was more of an energy kind of a guy, this year I m trying to put up more points. Although hockey remains Isaacson s primary focus, the Continued on Page 9 PAGE 7

5 Continued from Page 7 nineteen year old is also currently taking flying lessons. The schedule for learning how to operate an airplane includes two, three hour ground sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, discussing different categories impacting flight such as weather and wind. It appears taking flight is programmed into the Isaacson gene code, with his father flying commercially for Air Canada and older brother currently in the process of becoming a pilot, My dad has had a plane forever, since I was 10 I have been flying. I haven t always known how to take off and land until now but he s always let me fly it. He s always taught me how to do it. In addition to his pilot brother, Nick has another brother in the military and sister who teaches french and science, all living in Mississauga. Beyond his own family, the Petes forward sustains a strong relationship with his billet family and expresses a lot of gratitude for their selflessness. Atop flying planes, Nick also used to snowboard competitively. If hockey or flying don t evolve into lifelong careers, Nick has pondered on the prospect of becoming a history or geography teacher, because of his favourable experience in high school. Although Nick is sidelined with an injury, it s early in the season and the sophomore player is determined to build off the work he put in during his inaugural season with the Petes. PAGE 9

8 DON CHERRY NAMED HONOURARY CHAIRMAN OF CHL S 100TH MASTERCARD MEMORIAL CUP CELEBRATION The Canadian Hockey League announced on November 11 details regarding several of the league s 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup initiatives including the appointment of Canadian hockey icon Don Cherry as Honourary Chairman of the CHL s 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup celebrations. This is a very special season in Canadian Hockey League history as we commemorate the 100th presentation of the Memorial Cup, said CHL President David Branch. As we aim to fulfill our goals to capture, preserve, and enhance the legacy of this prestigious trophy while honouring the brave men and women who served and continue to serve our country, it is only fitting that Don Cherry be at the forefront of our celebrations. 9 Continued from Page 14 Before establishing his legacy as the star of Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry was a Memorial Cup champion as a member of the 1953 Barrie Flyers. The Kingston, Ont., native s longstanding and unwavering support of Canadians in uniform have earned him Honourary Lifetime Membership into the Royal Canadian Legion and the appointment as an Honourary Patricia by the Princess Patricia s Canadian Light Infantry. Cherry was also instrumental in bringing the CHL to the Greater Toronto Area as part of the Mississauga IceDogs ownership group in 1998, and is recognized with Bobby Orr as a builder of the Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game which began as an annual showcase in As part of the CHL s 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup celebrations, the league has also announced the 17 CHL communities that will comprise the Memorial Cup Tour which begins November 18 in Barrie. The Memorial Cup will visit various military bases and legions and provide fans the opportunity to see major junior hockey s top prize as part of a unique game day experience. The 17 CHL communities are spread across eight provinces with 13 of the stops coinciding with Sportsnet s new CHL Saturday Showcase national broadcasts. The closest stop to Peterborough is in Kingston on January 13, A number of the CHL s additional 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup celebration initiatives are taking shape. To mark this special anniversary the CHL has partnered with CIBC, Official Bank of the CHL, to create a commemorative coin in remembrance of all those who have served. 11 Continued from Page 16 While the 100th celebration logo has been proudly displayed on rinkboards across the country since the launch of the campaign, the logo has been converted to a sweater patch that will be worn by all clubs as well as on-ice officials for the duration of the season. The centennial celebration at the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup will take place May 17-27, 2018, and will feature the host Regina Pats who competed in the very first Memorial Cup championship in 1919, along with the 2018 champions from the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Memorial Cup has a rich tradition that has shaped the way junior hockey is played in North America. The trophy was original known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919, in remembrance of the many soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice for Canada in the First Wold War. In 2010 the Memorial Cup was rededicated to the memory of all fallen Canadian Military Personnel. The 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup is proudly supported by Mastercard, title sponsor of this event for 20 straight years. Associate sponsors include CIBC and Cooper Tires.
