3 d 7 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello everyone. Welcome to Minnesota and the 106th Annual Minnesota State Trapshooting Tournament. Last year was another one to remember. It is the first time since I started shooting (2006) that we have not had a repeat Event Champion. We had three new champions last year, Frank Redfield won the Singles, Max Bunning was our Handicap Champion and Peter Walker dominated as our Doubles Champion. Congratulations to all of them. This year the Board of Directors decided to change things up a bit. With the 4th of July being a Monday this year we will start off our week on Tuesday, July 5th. We will have a combo day with the youth shooting as well as adult shooting, with the Warm-Up Singles, Handicap and Doubles. Traditionally following the events on Tuesday we held our annual appreciation pork chop feed. We will not be doing that this year because of the anticipated busy day. The feed will be instead held on Friday in conjunction with our Shooter Recognition Banquet. This feed is in appreciation for our shooters who support the MTA and other gun clubs throughout the year and to help us recognize our State s best shooters. Without you we would not be able to host such a great shoot and hold it at a facility as nice as Alexandria Shooting Park. Wednesday, July 6 will begin our High Over All events. Thursday evening we will still hold a shooting tournament, either the Miss and Out or a Wobble Trap Tournament with free brats and polish sausage for all who wish to watch or participate. This fun event is being sponsored again by Bob Schultz of Target Shotguns Inc. If you run into Bob at any other shoots or in passing, tell him thanks. This is Bob s seventh year in sponsoring this wonderful event. This fun night of shooting will be held outside the main clubhouse at the practice trap field. On Friday evening we will hold our Shooter Recognition Banquet in the main clubhouse. This will also be the night we will be having the Pork Chop Meal. We will have a presentation of awards to the shooters and recognition of their accomplishments throughout the year. Following the banquet we will once again hold our live auction. Once again this year s live and silent auctions will be put on by the MTA and we would ask that if anyone wants to donate any items for the auction to just contact any MTA board member and we will make sure to get your items listed. The MTA appreciates any auction items given. On Saturday morning the MTA will hold the Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Trapshooters Association. They will elect any new board members and conduct any new business that needs to be taken care of. Everyone should try to attend to show your support and see what s happening in your Association. The meeting will be held at 8 am in the main clubhouse. Again, we would like to thank our event sponsors and advertisers for their continued support and dedication to the MTA and our State Shoot. Don t forget to thank the sponsors yourself if you get the opportunity. I hope to see everyone at the shoot and doing well. I wish everyone to have a great shoot. If there is anything we as your MTA board can do to help just let us know. We are receptive to any and all suggestions. Thank you very much and have a great shoot. Shooters who become eligible for new age-based categories during the target year may elect to continue to compete in the previous category for the remainder of that target year. (For example a shooter reaching age 70 may elect to continue to shoot as a Veteran for the remainder of the current target year.) However, once a shooter has elected to move to the new category that decision is irrevocable and he/she may not again declare eligibility for the previous category. Junior shooters reaching the age of 18 may continue to declare Junior category for the remainder of the current target year. When there is no Sub-Junior trophy Sub-Juniors will be included in the Junior category. Senior Veterans will be included in the Veteran category when there is no Senior Veteran trophy. Where there is no Junior Gold or Sub-Veteran Trophy, these shooters will be included in the Open Class. Where there is no Lady II trophy, these shooters will be included in the Lady I category. 13 MINNESOTA TRAPSHOOTING ASSOCIATION 2016 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES PAUL CYR Paul Cyr s involvement in trapshooting began at a very young age, first at the trap club in Oklee (which had a Remington trap machine like the one in the ATA HOF, pulled by hand with a pipe running underground) and then traveling with his dad to Thief River Falls to participate in league shooting as a 12 year old. Paul shot his first ATA registered targets at the Fergus Falls Gun Club in He attended the ATA Grand American for the first time in 1978 and has attended 30 Grands since that time. With the exception of 1983 and 1984, he has registered targets every year and to date has a total in excess of 260,000 ATA targets. He has been a member of seven Minnesota All-State teams throughout his shooting career. While Paul has won a few Minnesota State Shoot trophies over the years, including ties for the Singles and Doubles championships, winning a major award has thus far eluded him. He served on the MTA Board of Directors for 11 years as a Southern Zone Director and for one year as Vice President. He continues to be involved in the State Shoot as a volunteer, and is considered the Minnesota shoot-off guru for his knowledge and structured management approach to complicated shoot- offs, especially during championship events. Paul retired in 2013 after spending 31 years in the education field. He spent four years at Fertile-Beltrami and the remaining 27 years in New Richland at the NRHEG Schools as a math teacher, middle school and high school principal. He was also a head wrestling coach in both schools. His coaching record was His teams collected 11 conference titles, and four of his teams qualified for the MSHSL tournament, and has had six wrestlers win seven state championships with three of his former wrestlers went on to win national titles. He was recently inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Dave Bartlema Hall of Fame, which means Paul will be inducted in two separate sports Halls of Fame in the same year! After retirement, Paul returned to Oklee and, as he tells the students when he works as a substitute teacher, he has four jobs, subbing, umpiring & officiating, hunting ducks, and shooting trap. Congratulations, Paul, on your induction into the 2016 Minnesota Trapshooting Associations s 2016 Hall of Fame as a Supporting Member! 14 MINNESOTA TRAPSHOOTING ASSOCIATION 2016 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES DEAN & BETTY WALKER Dean has been on a MTA state team every year since 2005 with 5 years as Veteran Team captain. In addition, he has been named to 5 Veteran All-American teams. He achieved the 27 yard line in 1998 and has maintained at least a AA-27-AA average every year since 2005 with well over a hundred perfect scores. Dean cites his first 100 straight from the 27 yard line to complete his first grand slam as his greatest accomplishment and stated, That was a high that lasted for months. In total Dean has completed three grand slams. Dean has attended numerous Grand Americans, most notably winning the Veteran National Clay Target Championship in 2011 and High All Around Veteran Runner- up in In state, Dean has won numerous events including the Veteran Singles Championship, Veteran Handicap Championship, three Veteran Doubles Championships, and the High All Around and High Over All Veterans Championship twice. Betty has been on the MTA state team every year but one since At the 2015 Spring Grand she was the Lady II Doubles Champion. Betty has also won numerous trophies attending Minnesota state shoots including two Lady II Singles championships, two Lady II Doubles championships, Two Lady II High Over All Championships, and three Lady II High All Around Championships. Additionally, at the Arizona state shoot Betty won the Non-Resident Lady II Doubles championship and the Non-Resident Lady II Handicap Championship twice. Betty s favorite accomplishment was when, as a relatively new shooter, she shot a 99 in handicap to best a field of 250 shooters. Simply put, it seems Dean and Betty were born to shoot. Dean knew early on when he started hunting ducks and pheasants at a very young age and Betty MINNESOTA - Master -72 page /16/2016 5:01:29 PM

15 figured it out when she married Dean in She quickly took to hunting and the couple started shooting in trap leagues in the early 70 s. In 1976 they relocated their young family to Erskine where they continued to shoot league at a one-house club they helped establish at the Erskine airport. Early on their business, busy kids and location limited their registered shoot participation but in 1979 Dean shot his first registered targets in Grand Forks during a downpour wearing a garbage bag for a rain coat. In 1994 Dean and Betty moved to Grand Rapids. They continued to shoot league and in 1998 Betty finally joined Dean in shooting registered targets. Their registered shoot participation grew rapidly as they attended shoots across northern Minnesota, Minnesota state shoots and eventually began spending whole winters parked at various trap clubs across Arizona. To date Dean has shot over 260,000 registered targets including 100,000 in both singles and handicap. Betty has shot over 112,000 registered targets. In addition to supporting clubs through participation Dean has served as a director and President for the Erskine and Grand Rapids gun clubs and has been an Alternate ATA delegate for the MTA for the past three years. Over the years Dean and Betty have been great ambassadors for the sport of trapshooting. They are quick to urge anyone to give it a try, happy to help when asked and generous with encouragement. When asked why they love to shoot they both gave similar answers. Dean for the 3 C s: challenge, competition and camaraderie. For Betty it is camaraderie; being around people with the same interests and enjoying the time. Win or lose. This passion for the sport has led to many friendships, successes and accomplishments for each of them. When asked for favorite memories they were quick with their responses. For Dean it was shooting with Julie at Red Mountain when she shot her first 100 straight in singles. It was raining and they both shot straights with Dean winning AA and Julie A. For Betty a favorite memory was the time at Red Mountain where Dean won long yardage, Peter mid yardage, and Betty short yardage by them all shooting 95 s in handicap. When they aren t shooting Dean and Betty love to spend time with friends and family. Especially hunting and four wheeling with their dog, kids and granddaughters. Dean and Betty continue to shoot, splitting their time between Minnesota and Arizona, finding new places to compete and show no signs of slowing down. Congratulations, Dean & Betty, on your induction into the Minnesota Trapshooting Association s 2016 MTA Hall of Fame as Shooting Members! Written by Julie Wiens & Peter Walker HALL OF FAME CRITERIA The Minnesota Trapshooting Association Hall of Fame donors shooters whose accomplishments bring credit to our sport in the areas of Shooting and Support. Men and women of exceptional diligence and sportsmanship are inducted; integrity and character are the first requirements for consideration. To help maintain our low costs, the club and the MTA request that shooters not wishing to save their hulls please catch them and hold them in a bag until you are finished shooting, then discard them in a trash bin. This will save the labor time required to clean up our fields. Thank you for your help. SHOOTERS The MTA supports the continuing efforts of the National Rifle Association. We encourage every shooter to join the NRA and support their diligent work to protect our rights as shotgun sportsmen and sportswomen. Please visit the NRA booth at this year s State Shoot! 23 MINNESOTA TRAPSHOOTING ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING Saturday, July 9, :oo am Please note that the Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Trapshooting Association will be held SATURDAY MORNING AT 8:00AM. Any new business a member would like to discuss and vote on at this meeting must be submitted in writing to the Secretary of the Minnesota Trapshooting Association at least TEN DAYS PRIOR to the date of the Annual Meeting. Any requests submitted will be posted on the bulletin board on the grounds at the State Shoot. NOTE: CLASSIFICATION, CASHIERING AND SQUADDING WILL BE OPEN FOR OUR YOUTH SHOOTERS ONLY DURING THE ANNUAL MEETING. During the Annual Meeting we will review the past year s financial details, any new business, and hold our annual elections. Each year there are several open offices up for election so it is important all members make every effort to attend. We will be holding the voting on both Saturday and Sunday. After the close of our meeting on Saturday, the Secretary will gather all nominations and prepare numbered ballots. Each name entered into nomination during the Saturday meeting will be on the ballot. Eligible voters having registered ATA targets in at least two different years and in physical possession of a current ATA paper average card will be able to sign for and pick up a ballot. Ballots will be available at the Classification desk after Saturday noon. Each voter will then have until Sunday at 1O:OOAM to complete their ballot and place it in the ballot box, which will be located at the Classification table. Ballots and the ballot box will only be available while an MTA board member is present at the Classification table. Votes will be tabulated by the Secretary and Senior Zone Directors. Nominees with the highest vote count will be posted on the bulletin board by 1:OOpm Sunday. The MTA Board voted to adopt this procedure to both comply with ATA rules and to allow all members to have a greater opportunity to vote. The Board encourages all members to exercise their voting rights, and invites all MTA shooters to volunteer their time and talents to help benefit the shooters of Minnesota. HOW THE ATA SUPPORTS STATE ORGANIZATIONS The ATA, in its program of building strong state associations, aids them financially. From each $20 ATA annual membership, $2 is returned to the state organization. From each $500 ATA life membership, $250 is returned to the state organization over a ten (10) year period, and part is retained in a special ATA emergency fund. From the $3 daily fee you pay, twenty percent (20%) is returned to the state organization. The MTA s refund for 2015 from the ATA is $5, MINNESOTA - Master -72 page /16/2016 5:01:30 PM

27 YOUTH DAY (Minnesota Residents Only) Tuesday, July 5, 2016 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who can participate? Youth Day is for Minnesota resident youth shooters who fall into AIM age-category guidelines. Do I have to bring my own shells? Yes. You will be required to bring whatever you will need to shoot the events you choose for the day. Shells are available for purchase on site. What else should I bring with me? Bring your ATA membership card (the hard blue or orange card with your ATA number on it), your ATA paper average card, a check or cash for registration, your gun and shooting supplies, and be prepared for a fantastic day! Many shooters also bring a small cooler with snacks and drinks; a free lunch is provided for shooters. Alexandria Shooting Park will also have items for purchase. Is it expensive for my youth shooter to participate? No, in fact the MTA grants each Minnesota-resident youth shooter discounted target costs for youth day. In addition the MTA provides discounted targets for the remainder of the shoot for all events. The MTA also pays for the first year s membership dues to the ATA. Shells are the responsibility of each shooter for the events they wish to participate in. In addition, free lunch is provided onsite for youth shooters. Does the MTA take credit cards or debit cards? No, cash or checks only. There is no ATM onsite so please make sure your shooter comes prepared. What time should I arrive? Registration begins at 8:00am so plan to come early and be prepared ahead of shooting time, especially if you are looking to join a team or for someone to complete your team. Shooting begins promptly at 9:00am. I m a Sub-Junior but my friends are all Juniors can I shoot with them? Yes. Youth shooters of different age categories may choose to shoot together however, for team award purposes, the shooter with the oldest age category will determine the category for the entire squad. For example: 4 Sub-Jr s and 1 Junior shooting on the same squad will be considered a Junior squad for team purposes only. I do not have a team. Can I still compete? Absolutely! Youth Day is both a team and an individual competition. Sometimes there are partial teams looking for shooters in their category to make a full team too, so check with shoot staff when you get to this year s Youth Day for more information. When will trophies be awarded? The Awards Ceremony will convene 1 hour after the final shooter has completed their round. More information will be mailed out to current ATA youth shooters, gun clubs throwing ATA targets in 2016, and available online at the MTA s official website If you have specific questions regarding Youth Day, please contact Mark Stevens ( ) or Sally Stevens ( ) MINNESOTA - Master -72 page /16/2016 5:01:30 PM

The historic Minnesota Diamond Badge has been in competition since 1885, when George Baldwin of St. Paul won it with a score of 43x50. The badge was donated by the St. Paul citizens and was competed for at the State Fair. The badge was an elaborate affair in design, with guns and other sporting designs, and carried a perfect one-karat diamond in the center. It was a perpetual badge never to be in the possession of any one individual. The Minnesota Diamond Badge originally consisted of 26 targets at 16 yards and 12 pair of doubles, for a total of 50 targets. It was considered the Minnesota State Championship from 1885 through 1913 until the American Trapshooting began State Championships in Each year Minnesota shooters relive the past by competing in a fun shoot with hopes of being honored a Diamond Badge replica. While the shoot format has changed, the competitive spirit associated with Diamond Badge lives on. Good luck today, shooters! The Minnesota Trapshooting Association is the current custodian and it is kept locked away in a safety deposit box in St. Cloud, MN MINNESOTA - Master -72 page /16/2016 5:01:47 PM
