ANOTHER FIRST RDCSA is hosting biggest ever indoor soccer tournament in Red Deer. We are bringing in over 100 teams to our Holiday Inn Family Day Tournament. Games are played at Collicutt Centre and Westerner Park between February We'll have 12 of our own Renegades teams take part in this. Renegades vs Juventus The Red Deer Renegades U17 Tier 1 Boys hosted the defending U16 National Champions, Juventus, for a league game on January 21st. The game kicked-off with the Renegades creating a dangerous scoring opportunity in the opening minutes. After this, Juventus applied continuous offensive pressure for the remainder of the half, but our U17's absorbed each attack while limiting the amount of quality chances. We are happy to announce that this great tournament is completely sold out! 7v7 Non-Boarded Tournament for Tier 1 & Tier 2, U12-U18 played at the Westerner Lions and Saputo Fields. The Second Half Boarded Tournament for Tier 3 & Tier 4, U12-1U18 as well as a non-competitive U10 played at the Collicutt Centre. In the second half the Edmonton side continued to carry ball possession in their favour, as the Renegades' defensive shape and quick reactions from goalkeeper Brian Murray kept the score locked at 0-0. As the half progressed, both teams began creating higher quality chances, making the possibility of breaking the deadlock seem more and more imaginable. COME ON OUT AND WATCH SOME GREAT YOUTH SOCCER! Final minutes The score line changed with 15 minutes remaining, as Juventus' number two took on our last defender and slotted the ball just inside the post in the bottom right corner. Both teams continued to press on and attack for the rest of the game, and our U17's physical presence and impact on the match was boosted by the effort and performances of Nico Contreras and Tristan Mullin. After a hard-fought and organized showing, the final whistle brought the game to a close as a 1-0 final. Story: Patrick Sweiger

U18 Girls win GOLD at the New Years Ranger's Tournament! U18 & U12 Girls It was a day for shootouts for our Renegade Girls --- earlier the U12 Girls lost to their opponents in a shootout, with the U18 Girls cheering them on. The U12 Girls then went on to watch their older counterparts, the U18 Girls, contend with their own shootout for Gold. Fabulous shots were taken by Kayla Nesseth, Mikayla Fujimoto and Tyler Vercainge. Due to the efforts of Erin Gill and her spectacular saves, the shootout was won by our own U18 Renegades with a shutout! Story: Kelly Richard

RENEGADES PLAYERS GIVING BACK TO THE SPORT Eight Red Deer Renegades players, Emily Downey, Ashley Thomson, Kris Grobmeier, Zachary Bettesworth, Nico Contreras, Mathew Harmonic, Tristan Mullin and Brian Murray are giving back to the sport they love. I recently had the opportunity to catch up with a few of them during their coaching session with the U8 teams. Volunteer coaches can be difficult to find so RDCSA is looking at new ways to support, develop and mentor coaches and inspire more youth to stay involved in the sport. Parent coach, Raye Forbes, has found having the player coaches a huge support and says it has been a great experience having them. Besides supporting parent coaches, it has also provided a valuable learning experience for player coaches. Coach Mullin said one challenge has been coming up with drills the players can do at this age. Overall, it has been a positive experience for both players and coaches. Coach Bettesworth and Murray both stated seeing the players improve has been their favourite part of coaching. The players also seem to enjoy having the older players involved. U8 player, Luke Gavey says his favourite part is they (coaches) like to play games with us. Story: Kim Vandermeer

MINI STARS SHINE Friday nights were really shining at the Westerner AgriCentre with our Mini Star Program! Low registration in the ASA program led RDCSA to implement our own program and it was at no cost to our players! About 60 of our U11 and U12 level players participated a 300% increase over last year! Our kids had fun and learned some new soccer skills led by our outstanding Technical Staff.

Changing The Face of The Game By Jim Claggett December 12, 2016 The game of soccer is undergoing a change in Canada. Canada Soccer has hired on former national team captain Jason Devos as their grassroots director for the game in order to get programs in motion so our soccer players can catch up with other countries and their soccer expertise. He is trying to see if he can make a difference and try to get soccer to the higher level, said Ado Sarcevic, General Manager for Red Deer City Soccer Association. The program starts with the younger players being introduced to the game and Sarcevic says all the soccer associations appear to be 100 per cent behind the initiative. The pillars of the plan include educating the coaches, the players and the parents about the game of soccer. Sounds simple, right? Well, at the moment new soccer coaches can start with the community coach level, many without any coaching experience. Those coaches can move up the ladder by obtaining their provincial B license to coach and then a National B and A license for those higher levels of play and experience. Under this new guideline, which could be in place by 2017 a coach can take training to get a children and youth license. This is a key beginning for both the coach and the players under their guidance. It s to educate them generally about the game and the difference between recreational and competitive (soccer) and really what it takes to get up to the highest possible level, said Sarcevic. He says around the Red Deer region there is a sort of house league mentality when it comes to the game and the down to earth instruction like young hockey players get in Canada isn t really there. Many parent volunteers are giving of their time to head up a team which is welcomed but they really aren t armed with enough soccer knowledge to coach these youngsters, he said. We are already doing some things at some age groups in line with the CSA and Alberta Soccer Association vision, he said about the move to expand instruction to players just starting out.

The soccer is driven by those professional clubs. Here the soccer is driven by community clubs because there is not enough money and there are only five professional clubs so it can t be driven by that, said Sarcevic. Sarcevic says there needs to be a clear pathway for young players as to what they need to do in order to reach the level of a professional just like it might be laid out for young hockey players in this country. The general consensus from those coaches at the competitive level in Alberta is soccer has been running along the same line for many years now when it comes to coaching and things need to change with the times. The former professional player from Bosnia says he can t coach the way he was coached 22 years ago because the game isn t played the same way. What we are trying to do with the newer generation is trying to introduce new things because they don t know this old style of the way things are done, he said. I m not saying they were wrong but maybe they worked 10 or 15 years ago but everything kind of changes, evolves and gets better and so does soccer as well. The comparison Devos made was how there are five professional soccer clubs in Canada and in Europe there are more than 800 clubs. For Red Deer in 2017, young soccer players will see more of an academy style of instruction where they will get fundamental coaching at different stations twice a week with no games and then there will be a jamboree event where they will just play games. Sarcevic is excited about what the future of the game can be in Canada and isn t giving up but instead getting fully involved in making changes. The easiest thing is to give up and sit on the side and say oh, look at that. No, you jump in and you try your best. Another point made during the conference he attended was how professional soccer can influence the amateur game. Comparing Canada to Europe you have about the same geographic size with Europe holding more people of course. Photos Courtesy: RDCSA
