1 December 2012 Turkey Spiel winners and their catch: Stephanie Weilinger, Susan Tschirhart, Karl Klos and Ashley Waye. Ramblin s of a Curling Club Manager We ve almost reached the Christmas break so let s look back at the first half of the season. By now everyone has noticed the new carpet in the lounge. I m sure some of you have even spilled a drink or two (or more) on it. I m sure you ll all agree it has made a big difference in the general appearance of the lounge. The new carpet even survived the Great Flood of November. For those of you that were not here, or just noticed the big hole in the ceiling, I ll give you a brief recap. Sometime in the early morning of Saturday, November 10, a water line burst in the upstairs viewing lounge bathroom, sending close to 1000 litres of water through the ceiling and into the lounge. When I arrived around 7:30 a.m. that Saturday, the first sounds I heard sounded like rainfall. My first thoughts were: Uhhh, that s not good. When I turned the corner to enter the lounge I could see the water pouring out of the ceiling in various places. Mike had arrived just before I did and was upstairs in the washroom getting the water shut off. There was standing water stretching from in front of the trophy case, under the piano and all way to the couches at Sheet C. There was also standing water covering about a quarter of the dining room. After seeing this and shouting a few expletives, I did the only thing I could think of at the time, I finished my coffee (I really like my morning Talk of the Rock Royal Canadian Curling Club Where Friendship is Tradition December 2012
2 continued... Ramblin s of a Curling Club Manager continued from previous page coffee). Once I finished my coffee, I got out the club s shop vac and began sucking up the water. Thankfully, the next person to arrive at the club was Ross Snider. He quickly called a clean-up crew he has used in the past, and within an hour or so they were on site, getting the rest of the water cleaned up and installing blowers to dry the carpet. By Monday, the carpet had dried and left no evidence of the flood (except for the gaping hole in the ceiling). I d like to take this time to thank Ross Snider for arranging a crew to get here as quick as they did to do the clean up. I d also like to thank Kevin Buckner for getting the ceiling patched up. Great Job, guys! The third round of CCA curling commercials were partially filmed here in October. If you haven t yet seen them on TV, you can check them out on the club s new website. The Royals Annual Turkey spiel was held on December 1st. This year the spiel filled in less than three days. Who knew playing for poultry would be so popular? Congratulations to Karl Klos and his team of Susan Tschirhart, Ashley Waye and Stephanie Weilinger for winning the overall title. Royals teams have done well in various OCA events that have taken place recently. Team Racette has qualified for the Regions of the OCA Intermediates which will be hosted by the Royals on January Team Prebble has advanced to the Regions of the Men s Tankard, and Lisa Farnell is taking her competitive team back to the Scotties Regions. Good luck to all! Finally, I d just like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday. See you all in the New Year!! ~ Bill McAnally, Club Manger The only weight I seem to be able to lose is draw weight The club s Board of Directors: (Front Row) Jane McLaughlin (treasurer), Joanne Wan (secretary), Scott Girdler (president). (Rear) Tony Gilroy (vice-president), Glenn Newell (director), Brian McAndrew (director). Talk of the Rock Royal Canadian Curling Club
3 The O Reilly Bonspiel For fourteen years, curlers from the Royals and beyond have gathered at the annual O Reilly Bonspiel to raise funds for Providence Healthcare, one of Ontario s largest rehabilitation and complex continuing care facilities. Support and services at Providence are offered through their Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence, a long-term care home for 288 residents; and Providence Community Centre, specializing in community clinics, caregiver support, education and neighbourhood outreach programs, such as the nationally acclaimed Adult Day Program. In her first outing as skip, Patty Winsa led her team of Judy Gilles, Bob Brown and Bill McAnally to the 2012 championship. This year s one-day event organized by Royals member Leslie O Reilly raised more than $7,000 bringing the 14-year total to just more than $90,000. The O Reilly family wish to thank all who have contributed so much including bonspiel sponsors Beck Taxi, Mark Russom and Dave Craddock -- and look forward to topping $100,000 for Providence in The winners of the Providence Villa Bonspiel were, from left, Judy Gilles, last-minute spare Bill McAnally, Bob Brown and jubilant first-time skip Patty Winsa. Leslie O Reilly (centre) celebrates another successful Providence Villa Bonspiel along with his sister, Kim O Reilly, and Royals curler Kik Inouye. Where Friendship is Tradition December 2011
