1 PORTAGE CURLING CLUB PRESIDENT S ADDRESS Hello fellow curlers, The 2016/2017 curling season is fast approaching. We are set to start our curling season (if all goes well) on November 1st. For the last several years the board has been discussing how to get all members of the club involved in making our club more successful. As you may or may not know there are no paid members in our organization. Everything that is done making ice, maintaining the ice, painting circles, cleaning the kitchen, washing the linens, making sure there is soap and paper towels in the bathroom, working with juniors, running bonspiels etc. is done by members of the club. Some of our members spend hundreds of hours, some spend tens of hours and some spend a couple hours at the club working. This year, in an effort to determine how many hours it takes, what type of tasks are being done and who is doing them we are asking everyone to record what they are doing and how long it takes. The current board's vision is to see the workload spread out and figure out a way to accomplish this. There will be a 3-ring binder at the club with a page for each member. Over the next several months, please take the time to document your activities/donations and how long it takes. I realize this might seem like one more thing to do. However, I suspect we will find things being done that nobody realizes. Some of our members have been very active during the non-curling season. The League Chairs, Harry Erdman, Melissa Leeland, Shannon and John Schultz, have been busy getting the leagues planned and ready to go. The Long Range Planning Committee has been busy talking with other clubs and vendors, and getting bids to have a dehumidification system installed this fall. They are also looking at alternatives for painted houses and insulation in the ice house. Ken Ryczek has already begun working on the equipment in the basement and preparing for equipment start up on October 6. You will notice new benches on the ice this fall and an opportunity to order PCC curling apparel, thank you Brian Scheibach. The old chimney is down and the roof surrounding it has been repaired. Hopefully, our leaks in the viewing area are resolved. Our club will be busy with bonspiels this year. We are again attempting to start the season with a men s bonspiel, November The Hoopla Bonspiel will be held in December to honor Sue Weyh and raise money for a scholarship. The junior bonspiel will be in January to help our youth learn and continue their progress in curling. The Badger Women s Bonspiel is also in January and will be an opportunity for curlers from all over the state to enjoy Portage ice. The United States Senior Men s is in February, we are sharing this event with the other clubs in Columbia County. We finish the season with the Alumni Bonspiel in March. Some of these bonspiels are an opportunity for our club to make some money and the others are an opportunity to benefit the community and demonstrate what a great club we have. All bonspiels require a lot of work and can only be done with hard work from all of our club members. Please contact the chairs to find out what you can do to help. Finally, curling is a sport of respect, socialization, and competition. Please show respect to your fellow curlers, whether they have been on the ice for thirty years or three days. Help the new members feel welcome, teach them the rules of curling, show them how they can be active in the club (on and off the ice) and how to experience the full meaning of Good Curling! Jim Swan CLUB CLEAN-UP DAY Sunday, October 30, from 10:00-2:00 is clean-up day at the club. This is the day we dust trophy cases and chairs, vacuum, clean out the cupboards, clean bathrooms, hardwood floors, etc. The more people the less time it will take.

The entire process lasts approximately three weeks, and work takes place most nights, starting at 7:00 PM, during that timeframe. Traditionally, members lend a hand at least one night, and there is plenty of unskilled work to be done, so don t let unfamiliarity be a hindrance. Members familiar with the process will be on hand each night to provide supervision. Skips, bring your team members for a night of camaraderie before the season starts. Steve Benck will schedule work groups for each night, and will use to notify members and provide periodic updates. Contact him at or benck.steve@gmail.com with any questions. March 6-9: Club Playdowns March 10-11: Alumni Bonspiel March 12: Ice Out PORTAGE CURLING CLUB ONLINE We are at portagecurling.com as well as Facebook. Like us on Facebook and learn about area bonspiels and info about our club. We appreciate all the time and effort it takes. Thank you Steve Dubberstein.

4 BEER CLUB NEWS The Beer Club was a smashing success last year. The addition of 2 new taps was very popular. All of the Beer Club members really liked the variety available. In fact, Beer Club membership doubled! Obviously, we will keep 3 beers on for the 2016 season. If you have a beer you would like us to add, please contact Jim or Tyson Swan. You can also stop in at Daly s Liquor to discuss availability with Dan. Now the bad news Unfortunately, the craft beer that everyone likes so much is a little more expensive. The Beer Club lost a little bit of money last year. We cannot operate in the red so we need to raise Beer Club dues Beer Club dues Men - $120 Women - $80 Thrivent Choice Dollars, AmazonSmile, and Pierce s Charitable Rewards FALL BANQUET & MEETING SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30 TH 5:00 PM 6:00 PM Donating has never been easier.
