1 WELCOME TO THE 2017/2018 CURLING SEASON We hope everyone is having a good summer and looking forward to some better weather come fall. As something new this year, we will be holding a Registration Day, Sunday, September 24th, from 12:00-3:00 upstairs in the Curling Lounge & Dining Room. Come and meet your Curling Council and the League Convenors to sign up for your Leagues. Also Complimentary Appetizers! Please make sure BCC has an up-to-date address for you. Please spread the word to everyone you know who might want to try curling. We are looking at ways to improve our Hydro usage, within our financial means, but we are very limited at this point as to options. The last few years we have raised funds by selling engraved rock handles, but it appears that, this has run it s course. We will continue to explore other fundraising options. Curling Council is happy to announce that our new Director of Sports Operations, Doug Wark will be working with us in helping to Promote our Curling Leagues and Bonspiels. He will also be helping Andrew Bischoff run the Junior Program and helping with clinics at the beginning of the season. Welcome Doug! Curling Council is also happy to announce the addition of Ara Papertzian as a new councillor. As you know he helps Matt with our Ice and has been diligently looking into options, along with Harold Mooibroek, for Hydro Savings. Welcome aboard Ara! We would also like to welcome Susan Green as the new Convenor for Monday Night Ladies League and she will also be joining the Curling Council. Also a big Thank You to Rita Kilpatrick for all her hard work over the last several years as the Monday Night Convenor. Matt Hone will continue as our Head Ice Technician. Matt has done a great job over the past few years and we expect more of the same! John Wall will again be installing our ice this year, October 1st, so we can optimize our hydro usage & resultant costs. We would like members to know that this year we are continuing the Curling Capital Fund and all users will be contributing - members, via a one-time $60 assessment & for non-members, the Curling Capital Fund contribution will be built into the fees you pay. We continue to do our best to maintain our existing equipment but we must ensure that major equipment can be replaced & the Curling Capital Fund will provide a means to support that need in coming years. An example of this, is last year, when we had to fix the heaters, those funds came out of the Capital Fund.

2 As curling members, we all represent the best ambassadors to our club & your Curling Council encourages everyone to promote, recruit & provide a warm welcome to all new or returning members to the BCC. If anyone is interested in becoming very active in recruiting large groups of individuals, please see our GM to see if incentives are available. This year with our Ice installation process commencing October 1, 2017, we expect the ice to be ready around October 10th; however, we will commence league play on Sunday October 15th. We also hope to offer 3 evening clinics during that same week, at no charge, for newer players who simply want some assistance with technique prior to league play commencement. And to top off that week, bcc will host its annual Swing & Sweep on Saturday October 14th. Curling is a game built on good sportsmanship. That s why the players call rules infractions on themselves and generally aim to have fun & enjoy the competition. There are a number of basic rules associated with the game, and these rules can be found in the locker rooms on the bulletin boards as well as in the curling lounge. If you have any questions, ask someone & we will work together to resolve any confusion. Also this year we will be trying to enforce the time it takes to play an 8 end game. A game should take no longer than 2 1/4 hours Max. Please keep this in mind as we will be reminding everyone of this at the beginning of the season. On the subject of safety, a reminder about ice, use of Teflon sliders, and general safety. The Curling Council is once again reminding all curlers that they should adopt sound safety practices on the ice at all times. Thus, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that all curlers wear their sliding sole only for the delivery of the stone and that a gripper be worn over the slider at all other times. Not only will this increase your stability an safety on the ice, but it will also help with more effective sweeping as you will be able to sweep from either side and also put more downward pressure on the broom from a more stable position. Another safety reminder.your rocks belong on your sheet. Please anticipate the results of takeout shots that might send rocks onto adjacent sheets. Controlling RUNAWAY ROCKS is more important than an extra bit of sweeping. Also, when collecting rocks at the conclusion of an end, you must keep them under control We have seen accidents caused by rocks being pushed carelessly or in frustration. One final safety reminder.please CONSIDER DONNING HEAD PROTECTION We continue to see falls on the ice, so please check out options available. Ask other curlers whom you see wearing head gear. There are more options becoming available all the time and for those worried, more fashionable.. The main thing to keep in mind is how effective will it be! ICE HAS NO GIVE! Play Smart. Play Safe. Have Fun! We look forward to a great season. Your 2017/2018 Curling Council
