MIDLAND HOCKEY Issue 3 Midlands Hockey August 2018 IN THIS ISSUE: Pathway to Podium Vantage National U18 Tournament U18 Association Tournament Bayleys NHL TigerTurf Midlands Explore Camp TigerTurf Elim Christian College spearheads sports turf construction into a sustainable future Athletes Corner Quality creates Quality: If I have learnt one thing over the years in sport, it is that quality creates quality. In other words: good coaches develop better players, and I would like to emphasise the word develop here. To me a good coach is not necessarily a coach that gets the best result, or vice versa, a coach that comes last with his/her team is not necessarily a bad coach! So, if good coaches develop better players it is in everyone s interest to organise or join coach workshops on a structural basis. Moreover, to offer coaches a mentor or coach the coach program and finally, to provide clear and stimulating coach pathways. At Midlands Hockey it is our goal to implement a vision on coach development that is aligned with Hockey NZ for Prior to that, we will run some coaching workshops and we would like to welcome coaches to our NHL training sessions or test games across the Midlands region. Our first coach workshop was conducted during the July Explore Camp at St Paul s Collegiate in Hamilton. There we discussed the definition of talent and touched on topics such as: growth & fixed mindsets, positive coaching, the learning pyramid, supercompensation, deliberate play & practice training methodologies, game principles and focus of control. As you can see a holistic approach towards coach development wherein we discussed physical, technical, tactical and mental topics. If you are (or want to become) a passionate coach, please feel welcome to join our coaching programs or get in touch with us to discover the opportunities for you. We hope to welcome you somewhere soon Mark Borgers Performance Manager Midlands Board 2018 Stephen Stafford-Bush Jon Tanner Richard Graham Doug Sommerville Dave Potter Dean Armstrong Jeff Freeman Association Delegates BOPHA Daniel Hazelton CMHA Phil McConnell THA Clinton Butler TVHA Sue Bear WHA Declan Wyndham- Smith 2018 Ford National Hockey League 15 th 23 rd September

MIDLAND HOCKEY Issue 3 2 Pathway to Podium The Pathway to Podium (P2P) programme is a partnership between High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ) and Hockey NZ, designed to support the preparation of our athletes for the physical and mental demands of the highperformance sport environment. This programme consists of two camps throughout the year hosted by Hockey New Zealand, of which the first one was hosted in Hawkes Bay during May. This camp entailed 2 on field sessions each day as well as support regarding the areas Nutrition and Athlete Life. The camp placed a key emphasis on self-reflection and looking to explore outside of our comfort zones both on and off the turf. We were challenged to find skills outside of our current skillset and develop these during each particular training. However, personally the biggest benefits from the camp came from our exploration activity. In which, we were challenged physically and mentally to work in groups to complete set tasks. This activity highlighted how individual strengths and weaknesses can coincide to create a functioning team, which was highly relatable to a game of hockey. This activity tested our leadership skills and needed many characteristics that are required in a high-performance environment. Moving forward, the most important thing for me personally is to apply these similar philosophies into my everyday training. Having the confidence to take risks and develop these unfamiliar skillsets will help me to transition my game into the next level. 3 MIDLAND HOCKEY Issue 3 3 WINTEC Midlands U18 Women: Vantage National U18 Tournament Our Wintec Midlands U18 Women travelled to Dunedin after a good campaign build up. Although the results of most test games weren t always in our favour there was a big learning curve and there was plenty for our girls to look forward to. Having only five returning players from last year s team, this very young team was keen to make the most out of the week. The Wintec Midlands U18 Women started their first game against last year s finalist and one of the favourites Canterbury. With the first game of tournament jitters in the legs our girls weren t able to play their best hockey yet and they conceded a 5-0 loss to start the tournament. After losing against Canterbury the other two group games were now must win games in order to advance to the top 4 pool. The game against North Harbour was a better one. Our Wintec Midlands U18 Women held a better defensive structure and moved the ball with more confidence. A third quarter goal put the Midlands girls 1-0 up and although the kept dominating the game they weren t able to convert any more goals and they took the 1-0 win over Harbour. In the final group game against Northland the Wintec Midlands U18 Women needed a shoot-out win or an outright win to secure their spot in the top four. In a very even game Northland managed to take the lead twice in the first half and Midlands only managed to put one goal on the scoreboard. After dominating the last quarter to fight back Midlands took their goalkeeper off in a last attempt to score the equaliser but failed in their attempt. Due to this unfortunate defeat our Wintec Midlands U18 Women were going into bottom 4 not carrying over any points. The first game after the rest day was a good one for the Wintec Midlands U18 Women. Reenergised they once again increased the learning curve which paid of with a 3-1 win over Capital. The match itself seemed to be even enough with both teams having the same amount of circle entries, but the Midlands girls circle play was the better one and the managed to take a 3-0 lead before half time. In the second half Capital managed to sort out their defensive structure a nod and they even put one on the scoreboard. In the end it was just one for the books as the Wintec Midlands U18 Women secured their second and well-deserved victory. The next day the girls were playing Southern in a direct match for the 5/6 play-off game. Again, a draw or win would be enough to get the desired result and again our girls just found themselves coming short. After a fairly even first half the Wintec Midlands U18 Women dominated the second half of the game but struggled getting through the yellow wall in front of Southern s circle. In the final quarter Southern even managed to score of a sudden break away. Midlands replied by taking of the goalkeeper once again, but the yellow wall stood firm and after sixty minutes our girls found themselves scoreless and going in to 7/8 play off. On an icy pitch the Wintec Midlands U18 Women did not play their best hockey, but where the circumstances allowed it the played their most composed hockey and secured the 7 th place after a 3-2 win over Capital. The increased performances over the week showed the team made some clear strides forwards. A massive thanks to all the players for being a great bunch to work with and for all the hard work you put in throughout the whole campaign. Thanks also to family and friends for your support in the cold South and a special thanks to the management team: Reiner Vellinga (Head coach), Emma Phelps (Assistant coach), Monique Eades (Manager), Frans van der Merwe (Physiotherapist), and Cam Collins (Video analyst). 4 MIDLAND HOCKEY Issue 3 4 WINTEC Midlands U18 Men: The Midlands Under 18 Men had a lot of fresh faces this year after the majority of last year s team had moved on from U18 hockey. This year s team had high hopes after a relatively positive build up campaign leading into tournament week, held in the always chilly Dunedin. Game 1 saw the Midlands Boys come up against a well drilled Canterbury side. Midlands managed to score 2 goals against the run of play through Jake Soo Choon and Conner Garner to go into half-time up 2-0. Canterbury continued their dominance in the second half and were able to level the scores 2-2 in the fourth quarter. Midlands was able to hold off for the remainder of the game to force a penalty shootout. Step up Reuben Crawford, after making some quality saves during the game, Reuben saved 3 out of 4 of Canterbury s attempts guiding the boys to gain what would be a crucial extra point. Game 2, we played a flary capital team who had also won their previous game on shootouts. Meaning, whoever came away with the win would put themselves as frontrunner to go through to the top 4 with maximum points. A poor first half by Midlands saw Capital up 1-0 at the break. Capital extended their lead in the last play of the third quarter with a field goal. Needing to try and salvage something from the game, Midlands played with 11 field players for much of the fourth quarter; however it was not meant to be, with Capital sealing the game by scoring a third goal a minute from the final whistle. Final score 3-0 to Capital. Game 3 was now a must win for Midlands facing a dogged Southern team. The game started out very balanced with both teams having a handful of half chances in the opening quarter. It wasn t until an opportunistic long ball coming out of deep defence that found George Greenhill open at the top of the circle, that the scoring was opened. Greenhill stayed composed to round the keeper and slot home the opener. Minutes later a similar long pass this time found Matt Pinkerton open in the attacking circle. Pinkerton injected some pace to get wide of the keeper, before clinically hitting a reverse into the bottom corner. Southern fought back and managed to catch Midlands napping on defence, scoring a field goal just before half-time. Midlands came out after the break and controlled the game well through extended periods of possession. Eventually holding out to win 2-1. This win meant the Midlands Men had qualified for the top 4 pool alongside Capital, taking the 3-0 loss with them. Game 4, Midlands played North Harbour. A win was a must if they were to stand any hope of qualifying for the final. The opening half was an arm wrestle, with Midlands having the better of the opportunities by a narrow margin. The scoring opened in the third quarter when Conner Garner dragflicked a penalty corner past the outstretched stick of the North Harbour goalkeeper, 1-0 Midlands. North Harbour built pressure over the Midlands outfit and eventually the bubble burst with North Harbour scoring a field goal. North Harbour continued to dominate the final minutes of the game, and with Midlands down to ten men, a North Harbour dragflick found the back of the net. A tough loss for the boys who played excellent hockey for 75% of the game. Final score 2-1 to North Harbour. With no chance of making the final, game 4 v Auckland was always going to be an interesting contest. With Midlands playing some conservative tactics and resting some players who had played big minutes so far, Auckland were the dominant team from the start. A goal in the second minute allowed Auckland to settle into controlling the game easily. A second Auckland goal came in the 21 st minute ending the scoring for the first half. A penalty corner goal 3 minutes into the third quarter and then another field goal three minutes later sealed the result. Final score 4-0 to Auckland. The bronze medal match saw Midlands come up against North Harbour. With a clear game plan and motivational levels high, the team started the game well. Both teams defending well, not allowing the opposition many opportunities. However, it was Midlands who blinked first, allowing an easy circle entry and shot which found its way into the bottom corner. North harbour took their 1-0 lead to the half-time break. As the second half wore on, Midlands started to create some opportunities to equalise. They were able to build up enough pressure, until an attacking corner breakdown ended up being deflected in by Matt Deller. Midlands continued to dominate but were unable to convert a couple of close chances to win the game out rightly. So, another penalty shootout was needed. Even after five shootouts each, the score was still locked. It took three more attempts from each team to separate the teams. Reuben Crawford was able to apply enough pressure to the North Harbour attacker to force his shot to go wide. A deserved win for a strong performance from the Midlands Men, and a bronze medal to take home! Thank you to all the staff involved in this campaign, Matt Rees-Gibbs (Head Coach), Stuart Pitu (Assistant Coach), Sue Maclean (Manager), Frans van der Merwe (Physiotherapist) and Matt Williams (Video Analyst). Also, a huge thank you to all the supporters who made the long journey down to the cold. Special mention to Kim Wihare for the amazing photos she took throughout the build-up and tournament! Finally, thank you to Wintec for their support of the campaign.

MIDLAND HOCKEY Issue 3 7 TigerTurf Midlands Explore The first tier of the Midlands Athlete Pathway is Explore. This is where we as a region want to explore the talent we have spread across the five associations under our umbrella. The Explore Roadshows we ran earlier in the year was the open to all opportunity we provide at this level. The TigerTurf Explore Camp is a little bit different. For this camp we go to the associations and ask for nominations of players ideally in their final year of U15s*, who they believe have some of the skills, attributes and characteristics it takes to progress further with hockey. These players are then invited along to the camp. The camp is run over two days, and is held at St Paul s Collegiate in Hamilton. St Paul s is the perfect location for this event, due to its central location within the region, as well as the world class facilities is boasts. These include; an international standard hockey turf, accommodation, catering facilities, two gymnasiums, tennis courts, swimming pool and classrooms. The content of the camp touches on more than just hockey ability and knowledge. This year the programme included; on turf hockey sessions, strength and conditioning, a mental strength workshop and a team work/communication session. Midlands Hockey has a clear Athlete Pathway in place, we are now looking at improving the Coaching Pathway. The aim of this is to provide coaches of all levels within our region with more opportunity to upskill and learn. In order to get this started, we ran a coaching clinic alongside the camp for anybody coaching an age group representative team within the Midlands region. This clinic ran for one day and included; observational opportunities, a coaching workshop and a practical hockey session. A big thank you to our Explore Camp sponsor TigerTurf, and to all the coaches who helped run a successful camp despite some challenging weather conditions; Mark Borgers, Reiner Vellinga, Matt Rees-Gibbs, Joe Hanks, Jamie Carrol, Stuart Pitu, Kayla Wilson, Emma Phelps, Merel Hoskins, Anahira Hudson and Dean Armstrong. Also, thank you to Wintec who ran the strength and conditioning testing for the camp.

MIDLAND HOCKEY Issue 3 8 Elim Christian College spearheads sports turf construction into a sustainable future Auckland, New Zealand The 6,270 m² TigerTurf Evo Pro multi-sport field built at Elim Christian College is the first school in New Zealand with an Ecocept base construction. The base comprised 90% recycled plastic and rubber, pioneering radical improvements to sports base construction. Date project completed: May 2018 Area: 6,270m 2 Surface: TigerTurf Evo Pro Base construction: Full build Ecocept base TenCate Ecocept is the product of the TenCate research and development centre, designed with advanced technical construction that make this sustainably manufactured product a multi-functional base system that also supports sustainable turf construction. Environment sustainability new first in synthetic turf industry A little over 9,000kgs of plastic went into the synthetic turf here at Elim Christian School. That s a lot... BUT, TigerTurf recycled and reused over 32,000kgs of plastic and over 32,000kgs of rubber, that would have otherwise ended up in landfill, to create the Ecocept High Performance Sport Base. That s simply amazing! That s equivalent to approximately 50,000kgs of CO2 emissions! TigerTurf is committed to sustainable strategies that support healthy ecological systems. Elim Christian College and our project partners, Arrow Construction, share these values, and together, we have achieved a remarkable first for the New Zealand artificial grass industry.

MIDLAND HOCKEY Issue 3 9 The school had reserved a large area for a sports field, the last available site for this installation TigerTurf was responsible for designing, planning and managing the construction of a pitch to include as many student sports activities as possible. By selecting TigerTurf Evo Pro, the school took a further step towards a sustainable facility. This is one of our most durable turf products, which will outlast other surfaces and provide superb performance for any years. The velvet green Evo Pro surface forms a full-size football and hockey pitch Four further courts are set into the surface marked for basketball, netball and volleyball. Around the perimeter a brick-red, two-lane running track, which includes a 100m sprint track, encourages students to burn up excess energy. A long jump pit and run-up is installed alongside the pitch. TigerTurf s Evo Pro is our top range dressed hockey turf, certified for FIH National and ITF - Fast. The finishing touches Around the outside of the pitch, TigerTurf Summer Envy was laid to form a lush warm green lawn for frequently used areas, providing dry, comfortable seating for supporters. TigerTurf Classic was used for the footpaths used by spectators at the facility. Find out more about Ecocept The decision to use our multi-functional base construction component, TenCate Ecocept, turned this project into a sports facility to inspire every other school planning a synthetic grass sports field. Ecocept has many remarkable properties. It provides superior drainage, structural stability and shock absorption qualities. The structural design of Ecocept drains water from the surface both vertically and horizontally and depth of excavation can be reduced. It also meets the criteria for shock absorption set by FIH, FIFA and IRB. The quantity of Ecocept used in the base construction for the Elim sports facility recycled over 65 tonnes of waste product, which has been converted into the material used in the manufacture of Ecocept. Recycled waste forms 80% to 90% of the Ecocept product.
