7 n c a a h i s t o r y NCAA QUARTERFINAL APPEARance Follows AMERICA EAST THREE-PEAT Led by Honda Award finalist and first-team All-American Pam Spuehler, the Terriers won their third straight America East title for the first time ever and took a 17-5 record in the NCAA tournament. BU recorded its program-record 18th victory with a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime win over two-time defending Big Ten champion Iowa in the NCAA First Round before bowing out the following day in a 2-1 loss to Connecticut. Spuehler and the rest of the seniors became the winningest class in BU history, compiling 61 victories over their four years. Sophomore Suus Dekker (second team) and senior Sarah Hudak (third team) also earned All-America honors TERRIERS REPEAT AS AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONS The Terriers won back-to-back America East titles for the first time in six years, posting a 4-1 victory over Maine in a rematch of the previous year s conference title game. Making its ninth NCAA appearance, BU dropped a 3-0 decision to Connecticut in the first round, as the Huskies posted all three of their goals in the first half. The Terriers boasted a balanced offense en route to a 14-7 overall mark, as a program-record 14 different players scored at least one goal on the year. Junior Sarah Shute led the way with 14 tallies, which was the highest single-season total by a Terrier in seven years TERRIERS EMERGE AS AMERICA EAST CHAMPS; NEARLY UPSET MICHIGAN A five-year span without a trip to the NCAA tournament ended triumphantly when the Terriers captured the America East title with a 3-1 victory over Maine followed by a 5-3 home win over Central Michigan in an NCAA Play-In Game. The Terriers owned a balanced attack, with eight players tallying 10 points or more on the year, including Holly Wiles, who set the program s freshman scoring record when she scored her 12th goal of the season to give BU an early 1-0 lead in its first-round NCAA contest against Big Ten champion Michigan. The Terriers went on to hold leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before allowing the Wolverines to score the final three goals in a 4-3 overtime heartbreaker Two Appearances in a Row; Terriers Meet Massachusetts Again Jane Rogers and Rachel Stillings each tallied two goals and one assist as the Terriers erupted for five goals in the second half in a 6-1 victory over Rider in an NCAA Play-In game. Making their first back-to-back tourney appearance and seventh overall, the Terriers faced a common postseason foe in Massachusetts. Freshman Christina Strauss gave BU a 1-0 lead late in the first half, but UMass got two second-half goals to seal the 2-1 victory and advance to the second round. The Terriers opened against UMass, which they had defeated, 2-1, in overtime earlier in the season. Tina McDavitt scored on a penalty corner late in the first half to make the score 1-1. After a scoreless second half, the Tamra Geryk scored the game winner for the Minutewomen 1:39 into the extra period High-Scoring Trio Leads BU to NCAA Tournament Paced by the most prolific offense in program history, BU made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in three years. The Terriers had equaled a school record for wins with a 17-5 mark entering its first-round match against Ivy League champion Princeton. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes in, but BU s Michele Barnard, Leonie Kortenhorst, and Vera Schoenfeld each found the net within a span of 2:39 to give the Terriers a 3-1 edge with 16:36 left in the first half. Princeton rallied to tie the game at the 10:44 mark, and after Barnard scored her second goal of the match, the Tigers netted the equalizer with 4:15 remaining in the half. By contrast to the eight-goal explosion of the opening 35 minutes, the second half saw just one goal. Unfortunately, it was scored by Princeton Terriers Return to NCAA TOURNAMENT The Terriers earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after capturing their second North Atlantic Conference Tournament title in three years. BU traveled to Amherst for a first-round match vs. Massachusetts. Earlier in the regular season, the Terriers had defeated the Minutewomen in a bizarre game. The two teams traded goals, before heavy rains forced a stoppage with 26 minutes left to go in the second half. It took 12 days to resume the action, and a Chris LaPointe goal gave the Terriers a 2-1 upset win. The post-season rematch witnessed Massachusetts take a 1-0 lead at the break, and eventually win, 2-0. Robin Smith 94 - As a sophomore, Smith scored one goal in the Terriers 3-0 NCAA victory over Harvard on Nov. 14, Late-season Run Lifts Terriers to Postseason Play Despite a season-opening four-game losing streak, Boston University won 14 of its last 18 contests and captured its first North Atlantic Conference Tournament title. In the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 14, BU cruised to a 3-0 win over Harvard, advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in six years. Senior Meredith Jennings netted the game-winner just 15 minutes into the match. Sophomore Robin Smith and senior Lisa Barone added one goal each, while senior keeper Lori Heywood extended her string of shutout minutes to 588. In the quarterfinals, the Terriers traveled to Penn State to face the second-ranked Lady Lions. The game was scoreless through the first 28 minutes before Penn State scored to end Heywood s shutout string at 616 minutes. PSU added a pair of second-half goals to win, Terriers Receive NCAA Tournament At-large Bid After earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament, Boston University hosted Massachusetts on November 11. Scoreless for 100 minutes of play, the Minutewomen advanced to play top-seeded Old Dominion after prevailing in penalty-stroke competition, 4-3. The Terriers held a slight edge in regulation, outshooting UMass by a margin, but Massachusetts controlled the overtime. Sophomore keeper Lori Heywood made nine saves in the extended session to keep the Terriers in the game. Senior Tamarah Klein and junior Patrice Schena each converted their penalty strokes for the Terriers, but Massachusetts clinched the win, when its first four shooters scored. Michele Barnard 97 - The Terriers all-time leader in points scored in NCAA play. Barnard is third on BU s career scoring list and first in career assists Terriers Make Inaugural Trip to NCAA Tournament Through its first two seasons of play in Division I, BU amassed just a mark. The 1985 Terriers, riding a nine-game winning streak, stormed into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program s history. Receiving a first-round home match against Massachusetts, the Terriers got a first-half goal from senior Terry Geldart and some brilliant play from junior keeper Mary Linehan to claim a 1-0 victory. The following afternoon, BU faced New Hampshire, which had received a first-round bye and had defeated the Terriers, 1-0, earlier in the season. After a scoreless regulation, Alison Caito found the net at 1:04 of overtime to give the Terriers the 1-0 upset win. Advancing to the NCAA Final Four in Norfolk, Va., the Terriers drew Connecticut, and jumped to a 1-0 lead when Geldart converted a penalty corner just 3:20 into the match. However, the Huskies responded five minutes later, snapping Linehan s school-record shutout string at 759 minutes. A Connecticut second-half goal sealed the victory. Jessica Alcorta 00 - Alcorta appeared on two of the Terriers NCAA teams - as a freshman in 1996 and as a senior in 1999.
