Dear 4-H Community, 4-H Policy and Information Update April 2016 What does member in good standing mean for you as a 4-H member? What about project completion? These and other terms are common in 4-H but there are different requirements across clubs and counties. To help make the 4-H experience fair for every member regardless of which club or county they participate in, the 4-H Policy Advisory Committee which includes 4-H members, adult volunteers, and 4-H YDP staff underwent the task of not only defining these terms but also documenting the Steps to Success in 4-H. This document outlines: What member in good standing means, What is required for project completion, How members earn a year stripe and pin, Club participation standards, Requirements to exhibit at fair, Participation in 4-H events, And, ways to earn recognition in 4-H. As a statewide program delivered locally, we set out to standardize some key aspects of the program while allowing some flexibility at the local level. For example, six hours of project instruction is required but project leaders may require more based on the project and goals. Please review this document for more information so you know the steps to your success in 4-H. The new Steps to Success in 4-H and associated policy changes are effective July 1. We hope you find the Steps to Success in 4-H helps make your 4-H experience the best it can be. Shannon Horrillo Associate Director of 4-H Program and Policy

2 The Chris Carroll Award Mark Kasperson, Canyon Coyote 4-H Club, Reporter At their February meeting, the Canyon Coyotes 4-H club awarded their third annual Chris Carroll Memorial Award honoring a former 4-H member who passed away. Chris Carroll was a member of the Canyon Coyotes 4-H club until Even though Chris is now gone, his legacy continues on. He was shy, but that didn t stop him from helping others or becoming the president of the club. He loved the livestock projects, especially steer. He also loved helping other 4-Hers with their animals. The award is given to the person with the most characteristics that Chris had. Chris s parents, Dan and Kathy, came and awarded Kyle Carson, this year s recipient. The members gave reasons why they voted for Kyle. Some of the comments were, Kyle was a great role model for me. Whenever I needed help with something he would readily help me. Kyle has been faithful to help with 4-H livestock for fair. Kyle is in his 7 year in 4-H. He is currently attending San Diego State University with a major in Biology. After earning his degree, he plans on attending medical school and hopes to become a trauma surgeon. When asked how the 4-H has helped him, Kyle said, I think that 4-H has greatly helped in that it taught me many important life skills, such as, how to be a good leader, how to be responsible, diligent, a benefactor to my community, and ultimately an all-around better individual. Kyle definitely deserves this award. San Gabriel Valley 4-H Fair Rick Herbert, Palos Verdes Peninsula 4-H Club The SGV 4-H Fair will be held on Saturday, April 23 at the Chino Fairgrounds.
