End users can purchase tool kits, shirts and competition boards directly from the.idealnationals.com NEW website. For larger regional events, kits will be shipped from IDEAL Electrical to the executing rep who in turn will sell directly to the end user via IDEALnationals.com. Scoring A Scorekeeper will rank the best Professional and best Student scores on a white board. Individual scores, as with team scores, will only be recorded if the competitor has the best score. There are no ties. The competitors must beat the previous top time. Using the competitor s as an identifier, the ASM/Rep will submit the top individual and team scores to after each competition, Each team of three will participate back to back to back at the same station. The first person will start the clock and the third person will stop the clock. The second team member begins the competition after the first team member tests continuity and completely clears the conduit run of wire and devices. The third team member begins the competition after the second team member tests continuity and clears the conduit run. When the third person is done, the time on the timer is the team s score. There are no ties. The competitors must beat the previous top time. Competitors two and three may not touch any part of the competition board or products until the competitor before them clears the conduit run of wire and devices. Competition Space Layout Contest locations and available space will dictate the set-up and flow of the competition. In general, each location should have space for four (4) 4 x 2 tables. In addition to the 4 tables, there should be an extra table/counter for check-in/registration and product demonstrations. Check-In/Registration Table Every event will have a unique code that you will be sent via 24 hours prior to the event. We will track competitors at your event by their attendance using this code. NEW this year: ONLY ONE (1) NEW CHECK-IN CODE PER DAY PER LOCATION WILL BE SENT. Station Setup All stations should be set up the same way. However, competitors may set their station before starting the timer. (Example: Position switch and connectors, move wire caddy, etc.) Competitors may not pick up any tools before starting the timer; their hands should be empty. Switches should be reused for next competition. Used wire should be donated or disposed. 5
6 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Competition Instructions Competitor starts timer and begins the competition Contestants will be judged on time, quality of work and safety. 1. Contestants may set up their workspace however they want. 2. Have contestants make sure the switch is in the on position and the IDEAL TightSight Clamp Meter is turned on. 3. Once the contestant is ready, they will hit the red button on the time clock, and the challenge will begin. 4. FIRST, push the IDEAL S -Class Fish Tape from Box C up and through Box B to Box A. 5. Contestant will need two pieces of wire approximately 50 each. They may cut the wire using either the IDEAL T -Stripper or Linesman Pliers. 6. NEXT, pull the wire back through the boxes. 7. Terminate a single pole switch at Box A and for this challenge, there is no backstabbing allowed. 8. In Box B, cut both wires. Then, strip both ends of each, using the T -Stripper Wire Stripper. 9. Once both pieces are stripped, use the Linesman Pliers to pre-twist the wires together. 10. Use the IDEAL Twister Pro Wire Connector to terminate. 11. In Box C, terminate the wires on a Duplex Receptacle and identify the neutral using white phase tape. 12. FINALLY, perform a continuity test across the terminals of the Duplex Receptacle by using the IDEAL TightSight Clamp Meter. Students and Apprentices, once the beep is heard, contestants hit the red button on the time clock and the challenge is done. Professionals have one more step. 13. Contestants use the PrepPRO Coax Cable Stripper to strip the RG-6 cable. 14. Then, install the F connector using the OmniSeal PRO XL Compression Tool. 15. Finally, they perform a continuity test on the cable by using the VDV Multimedia Cable Tester. 16. Once Pass is visible on the screen, contestants hit the red button on the time clock and their challenge is done. Competitor STOPS Timer. 6
7 Post-Competition Within 24 hours of each competition, the ASM/Rep will submit the top individual and team scores to: NEW If paper registrations are used, the ASM/Rep will need to enter data into...an approved Excel spreadsheet and send via to idealnationals.com. Any signature forms will need to be mailed back to IDEAL, Attn: Nationals. Your registrations WILL NOT count if no spreadsheet is provided. Competition Rules and Hints Competitors may set their station before starting the timer. (Example: Position switch and connectors, move wire caddy, etc.) Competitors may not pick up any tools before starting the timer. Competitors start and stop their own timers. Competitors will need enough wire to get through the conduit run with two pieces. They are allowed to cut the wire before or after pulling it through conduit. No backstabbing Competitors will strip all wire using the IDEAL Wire Stripper. Competitors cannot use Lineman s Pliers to strip wire. Two clamps per board are required (figure 1). When pulling wire from the caddy, competitors may re-start if wire becomes tangled on caddy. Holding the back of competition board against the table may be necessary during competition (figure 2). During official events when times will be submitted, the wire must be 14 AWG solid black. However, if an event is unofficial (eg. apprentices practicing at trade schools), the color of the wire does not matter. Photos from your qualifying event should be sent to IDEALnationals.com for upload on The National Championship website. Pre-twisting is required 7
