About the Dakota Territory Buffalo Assn. The DTBA was established in 1996 and is based in Rapid City, SD. The DTBA has 180 members representing 14 states, including South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Texas, Indiana, South Carolina, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas and California. South Dakota is the largest buffalo producing state in the US, with more buffalo than the next two biggest states combined. North Dakota, Montana, and Nebraska are the next largest producing states. Buffalo prices are at record setting levels with demand out pacing supply The DTBA is a member of the National Bison Association, based in Denver, Colorado. The association also shares membership with our sister association, the North Dakota Buffalo Association and is a lifetime member of the Montana Bison Association. The DTBA hosted the 2007 International Bison Conference in Rapid City, SD and to date that was one of the most successful IBC events anywhere. The DTBA was the first group to develop a carcass contest based on real market conditions. Additionally, the group was the first, and is still the only, group that conducts a carcass contest for heifers. Member Bruce Anderson, owner of Western Buffalo Company in Rapid City, South Dakota, is currently serving as President of the National Bison Association. Custer State Park has a herd of approximately 1300 buffalo and is an active member of the association and partners with the group on many projects. DTBA also works with the InterTribal Buffalo Council, other state and regional buffalo groups, the National Bison Association, the Canadian Bison Association and partners on projects with other like-minded organizations. The DTBA Black Hills Buffalo Classic Show and Sale, featuring the group s Young Guns Yearling Breeding Bull Challenge and the Girlz Gone Wild Two Year Old Bred Heifer Challenge, is currently one of the most successful live buffalo auctions in the country. In 2015, the sale had the highest selling bull and the highest average in the country on yearling breeding bulls and the second highest average in the country on two year old bred heifers and tied for the highest selling two year old bred heifer in the country. The Girlz Gone Wild program is the only one of its kind in the country. The DTBA Winter Conference is always the last weekend of the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo, which will be celebrating its 58th year in With an estimated attendance of 331,000, this is the second largest event in the state of South Dakota, with only the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally boasting more attendees.
2017 CONSIGNORS 777 Ranch Mimi Hillenbrand, Owner; Moritz Espy, Manager PO Box 8303, Rapid City, SD (605) Our vision and goal for the 777 Ranch bison herd is to preserve and maintain the integrity of bison as a species. We let this vision guide us in our selection of our herd by letting nature take its course, as much as possible, and letting bison be bison. Our herd is run as a single herd to maximize and promote strong family groups. Our management is based on the Holistic Management Principles setup by Allen Savory. We use a planned grazing strategy which allows us to know where, when, and what the animals graze from conception to when we sell our animals. We are strictly a grass-fed operation. We do not feed our herd supplemental feed in the winter. We could achieve better gains on our yearlings if we ran them ahead of the herd on the freshest grass, but we believe that the lessons learned in the family unit are more important and that that the gains made while competing against mature animals are valuable life lessons. Blue Valley Ranch Josh Richert, Herd Manager PO Box 1224, Kremmling, CO (970) Blue Valley Ranch is located near Kremmling in Middle Park, Colorado. Our herd, established in 1996, grazes a 10,000 acre pasture from May through October at an elevation of 7,600 to 9,000 feet. Our health program consists of 7 way and injectable wormer in the fall. Cammack Buffalo Ranch John, Melanie, Lane & Mike Cammack Old Stoneville Road, Stoneville, SD (605) The Cammack Buffalo Ranch is operating in the 5th generation and is located in Stoneville South Dakota. John manages the ranch with his Uncle Lane. His Dad, Mike, lives in Alaska acting as the not-so-silent partner. John and Melanie s 4 kids work alongside as they learn how to take over in the future. We bought our first 30 buffalo in 1999 and have slowly built our herd to 350 cows. Doing so by buying the top genetics that we can find that fit our program. One of the great cow herds that we purchased was the Colorado Bison Company s complete herd dispersal. We have purchased bulls from around the country searching out top performance animals to continue to build a strong and functional herd. We love to improve our herd as we go through a strict culling program while allowing the buffalo to do their thing on the rolling western South Dakota prairie. We have our own performance tests we do on the ranch to help with the culling process. We also run 300 head of beef cows so we remember how great the buffalo are. Please see are web site for more information or John at bowhunter4life@goldenwest.net. Cold Creek Buffalo Company Boyd & Allison Meyer PO Box 82, Windsor, CO (970) The origins of animals at Cold Creek Buffalo, founded in 2002, came from reputable herds from around North America. Tatonka Ranch, Wolverine Bison, Le Grande Ranch, Slim Buttes and Red Canyon are where the seed stock animals came from that have built Cold Creek into a premier breeding stock producer. Cold Creek Buffalo DNA tests their breeding herd to identify superior genetics from both their cows and herd bulls. These genetics are then evaluated through their performance tested program to ensure the best traits are carried forward. Boyd is an avid supporter of the DTBA performance tested classes which allows producers to gauge their breeding programs against other top ranches in the United States and promote the importance of offering top quality breeding stock to producers. Custer State Park Chad Kremer, Herd Manager US Hwy. 16A, Custer, SD (605) Custer State Park has been producing quality buffalo since We have the longest running annual buffalo production in the world since Our buffalo are given standard vaccinations as calves, after that they are naturally raised without any vaccinations unless needed. Foundation of the Custer State Park herd is from the Scotty Phillip/Fred Dupree herd with genetic additions including the Wind Cave National Park herd. Custer State Park has been and continues to be, the foundation source for numerous private herds over the last 50 years! Animals are naturally range raised, supplemental mineral. Our Young Gun entries earned 3rd place in 2009 and Crazy Arrow Ranch Glen & Becky Carr Spirit Valley Trail, Conifer, CO (303) We have a small ranch in the foothills southwest of Denver, Colorado. Our animals are on the family ranch in Prairie City, SD, where my brother, Larry, and his wife, Renee, take care of them at the Rafter K Bar. We are always looking at improving the genetics in our buffalo herd and enjoy the DTBA competition programs Young Guns & Girlz Gone Wild which allows us to continue to see results. We have been in the livestock business for several years which includes Buffalo, Black Angus & Highland cattle, sheep, pigs, and horses and one mule. We are proud to be part of the DTBA community to continue to improve our herd. Holcomb Buffalo Ranch Zane Holcomb Holcomb Place, Buffalo, SD (605) Located in northwest South Dakota, Holcomb Buffalo Ranch has been raising buffalo for a quarter of a century on the family-owned ranch. The herd at Holcomb Buffalo Ranch thrives on fresh water, good hard grass and mineral supplements. They are fed hay and a little cake in the winter as needed. The cow herd is amassed from many different producers, with a blend of solid genetics being the goal. All the breeding bulls are from Slim Buttes Buffalo Ranch. In 2016, we were awarded second place in the Cutting Edge Carcass Bull contest.
2017 CONSIGNORS Heartland Bison Ranch LeeAllen & Rebecca Leier/Kevin & Anne Leier 4525 Highway 3 S, Rugby, ND (701) Heartland Bison Ranch, established in 1996, is a cow calf operation run by LeeAllen and Kevin near Rugby, ND. Both LeeAllen and Kevin strive to produce animals with consistent strong weaning weights and all around solid gaining ability in both grass and grain scenarios. Heartland Bison uses a select set of cut weights and target numbers to help determine which animals are eaters and which are breeders because the difference is important in order to maintain a high quality herd. Our bull battery consists of bulls from Slim Buttes, Cammack Buffalo, Jumpoff Buffalo, Heartland Bison, Sheyenne River Bison and Silver Creek Bison. These sires have given us a mix of genetics that continue to serve our focus as we move into the future. LeeAllen and Kevin are strong supporters of the performance classes as they once again have stepped up to host the Girlz in making it their 3rd straight year in a row. The ability to have some of the top ranches in the nation bring their animals to a neutral location and be raised under the same conditions is an unbelievable opportunity to gauge the quality and adaptability of these animals. It is this opportunity that is a major driver in Heartland Bison Ranch helping to continue to bring these animals to town. Horse Creek Bison/McFarland Ranch Steve, Roxann, Ashley & Paden McFarland Ellingson Road, Hettinger, ND (605) Horse Creek Bison is a fourth generation bison and cattle ranch. Frank McFarland started the herd with four heifers and one bull calf back in Today, we run close to 100 head in conjunction with Rafter K Bar, Larry and Renee Carr. Our animals are on a complete health program. We have used Byrd bulls and purchased bred heifers at the Black Hills Buffalo Classic. We have raised most of our own females and a few of our own bulls. Currently, we are using a herd bull from Cold Creek Buffalo Company. Bison are fed free choice mineral and pasture grazed, supplemented with grass hay when needed. We received the Black Hills Buffalo Classic Grand Champion award in 1999 and the Grand Champion Bull and Grand Champion Heifer wards in Over the years, we have placed with three golds, two silvers and six bronze for our show animals in various classes. Contact us for private treaty sales and private hunts. Jumpoff Buffalo Ranch Scott & Susan Peterson, Owners Cody Kloeckl, Mgr. PO Box 213, Belle Fourche, SD (605) Jumpoff Buffalo Ranch is located Harding County, SD, the heart of buffalo country. The ranch name derives from the expansive mud buttes and landmark mini-badlands known as The Jumpoff. Our first animals, 150 heifer calves, were purchased in Our herd originated from the Slim Buttes Buffalo Ranch herd. We purchased our first heifer calves from Slim Buttes in Our current bull battery consists of bulls that have come from performance tested and genetically proven production animals. Approximately 80% of our bulls have been purchased through the DTBA Young Guns Yearling Bull Challenge program. Jumpoff Buffalo Ranch has been the recipient of many awards and our animals have placed everywhere they have been shown, including the Western Bison Association Wild West Stampede Show and Sale, the National Bison Association Gold Trophy Show and Sale and the Dakota Territory Buffalo Association Black Hills Buffalo Classic Show and Sale. Additionally, we were a $10,000 DTBA Reality Based Carcass Class winner with our bull entry and named the Black Hills Buffalo Classic Producer of the Year in Purchasers of our animals continue to show genetic success within their programs. We have continually purchased the top bulls in the Black Hills Buffalo Classic Young Guns Yearling Breeding Bull Challenge since its inception. This has helped to build a solid genetic base in our herd with results showing in our calf weaning weights and in our feeder animal gains. Jumpoff Buffalo Ranch competes in the DTBA challenge classes because it s a proven program with tangible results. The challenge programs have improved numerous ranches by infusing their herds with animals that have great genetic potential. KenMar Buffalo Ranch Ryan Homelvig & Peter Cook th Ave NE, New Rockford, ND (701) Established in 1973 by Doc Ken Thorlson. Peter Cook came on board in 1996 and Ryan Homelvig in Today the ranch runs 1300 head of bison. We semen test and sell about 35 yearling bulls each year and sell about 60 bred heifers a year. Animals are grain fed a 12% protein bison ration ration and oats. We have received numerous awards at Black Hills Buffalo Classic and the Gold Trophy Show in Denver and Legends of the Fall in Minnesota. Our genetics include M-Line, Teddy Roosevelt, Snyder Land & Development and Diamond Tail. Medicine Pole Bison Jeff & Kim Oakland th Ave., Rhame, ND (701) Medicine Pole Bison, established in 1998, focuses on raising good quality animals that have the ability to finish efficiently for the slaughter market. The performance class gives our ranch the ability to see how some of our top animals perform against other top producers in the nation. The foundation of the herd came from Sheyenne River Bison, Cold Creek Buffalo, Skull Creek and Slim Buttes Buffalo Ranch. These animals have given our ranch a great foundation to work from in continuing to build our ranch herd.
2017 CONSIGNORS Northstar Bison The Graese & Hewitt Families th Ave., Rice Lake, WI (715) NorthStar Bison was birthed in 1994 but began long before that. Co-Founder, Lee Graese, has had a fascination with the majestic bison since his early boyhood, reading countless books documenting a time when herds stretched from horizon to horizon, providing life and sustenance wherever they went. Lee s early spark of passion for bison and their role in our nation s history evolved into a hobby when Lee bought a 2 yr plains bull and a heifer calf from Blue Mounds State Park in SW Minnesota in 94. The vision was cast and the has Lord blessed it. 22 years later, North- Star Bison is 3 generations deep, fully integrated, grass finishing approximately 1000 head annually on our own land and working with numerous other bison ranchers to help fill market demands. Owning our own processing facility allows us to see first hand thousands of 100% grass-fed bison carcasses by which to benchmark our expectations, make better management decisions and to track those tangible results. High yielding, easy fleshing, low maintenance bison is what we manage for. We try to emulate nature. Our cow herd is asked to perform on the following criteria: Minimum wts: 1 yr hfr - 725#; 2 yr bred hfr - 950#; 3+yr bred cow #. Conception: Must give positive pregnancy blood test annually. Weaning Index: Must wean a calf weighing 35% or higher of her body weight. Summer Diet Plan: Graze from April to Dec, free choice loose mineral, fresh water. Winter Diet Plan: Partial Graze and supplemental 1 st crop hay Dec to April, free choice loose mineral, snow and occasional water. Health Plan: wormer as needed based on fecal samples, Leptospira vaccine for bred cows. Bull Genetics: Silver Creek Bison (Big Ben & Crusher), Wolverine Bison (#929), Wilson River Bison (Colonel Cypress), Heim Buffalo Ranch (Cornhusker), Irish Creek Bison (Sir Bothwell), Custer State Park (late 1990s). Rafter K Bar Larry & Renee Carr US Highway 20, Prairie City, SD (605) The family-owned ranch was purchased by my father, Keith L. Carr, from the Carlsons in the mid-70s. The ranch was home to pigs, sheep, horses and later, Angus and Highlander cattle. We eventually made the switch to buffalo on the ranch and have never looked back! All the animals on our ranch are raised on grass in the summer and quality prairie hay in the winter, with good mineral supplementation and annual vaccinations. Our herd has genetics from some of the top producers in the industry, including bulls from Cold Creek Buffalo Company, Red Canyon Ranch and Horse Creek Bison. We have purchased top quality, award-winning females from the Black Hills Buffalo Classic for many years. Our ranch has been the recipient of several conservation and tree belt awards. We believe in being good stewards for the land and our animals. Sheyenne River Bison David & Diana Lautt 576 E. Brewster, Harvey, ND (701) Sheyenne River Bison was founded in We won producer of the year in 2002 and came close in 2000 and Performance is key to our herd and we are building up our current herd into a performance based group. Our current herd is made up entirely of Young Guns Bulls and Girlz Gone Wild females. We sold our orignial herd to Heartland Bison Ranch three years ago and are now rebuilding our herd with performance tested genetics. Slim Buttes Buffalo Ranch Sandy & Jacki Limpert and Brodie & Samantha Limpert Limpert Road, Buffalo, SD (605) SBBR has been raising buffalo for 25 years with a heavy commitment to genetic improvement. We currently run over 1000 mother cows in a holistic grazing manner. With over 30 pastures and extensive water development, the herd is moved every 7 to 10 days to fresh grass and water. In just a few years of practicing holistic grazing, SBBR has witnessed improved herd health, less fly problems, increased grass production and plant diversity. SBBR strongly believes in the principles of holistic grazing management from what we have seen with the improvement of the bottom line and soil and plant health. We have been a strong supporter and believer in the DTBA since the beginning. We are excited about the future of the Girlz Gone Wild and the Young Guns Performance tested classes, as they will add tremendous genetic potential to anyone s herd. SBBR is very proud to have received the DTBA Producer of the Year several times along with numerous awards over the years. A highlight was winning both the Young Gun and the Girlz Gone Wild classes two years ago. SBBR believes we are in unprecedented times because all sectors of the buffalo industry are profitable. Strategy Bison Dave & Liz Schroth PO Box 1634, Cheyenne, WY (605) Strategy Bison has been working in the bison business for 12 years. Of those 12 years, the past four have included membership in the DTBA. Strategy Bison works to identify excellent performance traits in their animals to continue to produce strong, efficient and well balanced animals that perform at a high level. Last year, Strategy Bison won the Girlz Gone Wild Performance Tested Heifer class which is testament to their established program. Tatanka Hills Kevin & Joan Stormo US Highway 81, Lake Norden, SD (605) Tatanka Hills foundation herd of seven females came from Custer State Park in 1988, followed by two M-Line yearling bulls from Doc Ken Throlson. The herd has grown to over 103 head through the years. Many of our breeding bulls have been purchased through the GTSS and DTBA sales. We have won Producer of the Year, as well as many other awards over the years, at both GTSS and DTBA s Black Hills Buffalo Classic. Tatanka Hills most recently won the Silver trophy for our yearling bull in 2016 at the GTSS and first place in the 2016 DTBA Young Guns Yearling Breeding Bull Challenge. We continue to strive to produce top quality animals.

Girlz Gone Wild Two Year Old Bred Heifer Challenge LeeAllen and Rebecca Leier, along with their eight children, started Heartland Bison Ranch in 1996 on a quarter of land south of Rugby ND. Their first ten bison calves hit the ground in the spring of The summer of 1998, Lee and Rebecca made the move to purchase 700+ acres in southern Pierce County and growth continued with the herd reaching over 100 stock cows. With a large continuous piece of land, it was time to put down roots and with a whole family effort, the Leiers established a new homestead and ranch headquarters for Heartland Bison Ranch. The original cows brought to the ranch were out of three different bloodlines. M-line, Custer, and Durham. These animals were the original seed stock for the herd. Today, we have used those animals and an excellent selection of bulls to raise stock cows that have the traits and genetics we continue to strive for. Today, Lee and Rebecca, along with their son Kevin and his wife Anne, continue to expand the ranch for the next generation. Hosting the Girlz Gone Wild competition for the DTBA was an honor for our operation and we feel blessed to have had so much support with the undertaking from members of the DTBA across the nation. The class of Girlz Gone Wild Heifers started arriving at Heartland Bison Ranch right after the DTBA conference and the final animals in the class arrived by the last week of February. During their acclimation period, the group was given free choice hay, access to trace mineral and salt blocks, and given three pounds of 16% protein range cake per head every two days. By the first week of March the group had acclimated well and the heifers were in good shape as we started to wean them off their range cake as they moved from their smaller three acre holding pen to a larger fifteen acre spot. On April 9, we ran the heifers through the working facilities to gather their out to grass weights and retagged each animal with their DTBA ear tags. They were also given a shot of Ivermectin at this time. We were once again blessed with an abundance of moisture this past growing season and the heifers benefited from excellent range conditions. While out on pasture, the Girlz had access to a 12% protein tub lick and were caked just enough each week to keep them coming to the pickup for herd health monitoring. By the middle of May, we turned in the bulls to get acquainted with the Girlz. The bull power was a combination of KenMar bulls and Heartland Bison bulls. Once again, we would really like to thank Ryan for leasing some great bulls to us to make sure we had the coverage needed. These guys did an outstanding job as we hit a 94% pregnancy rate on this group of 49 heifers. We also pulled the bulls by the second week of September to make sure these heifers have a closed calving window. With great weather throughout the fall, we were able to keep the group out on pasture until the first blizzard hit our ranch the first week of December. At that point, the heifers were brought into their fifteen acre holding pasture were they grazed off the pasture and then received free choice hay and a tub lick. Over the course of four weeks, the heifers were hit with three more strong blizzards that brought our snow total to just shy of 58 inches by Jan. 1. Mother nature put these heifers through her own test and they did just as nature intended... they thrived! On Jan. 6, the heifers were ran through to be worked for the sale. Our vet and ultrasound tech did a great job of getting their work done quickly and the heifers handling the work well. This class once again has brought outstanding bred females to the auction block and buyers will now have a chance to take these animals home to either start or expand their herds with exceptional female stock. We would like to thank the consignors and the DTBA for once again putting their faith in our ranch to raise these performance tested heifers. Kevin and Lee Leier GGW Page 9

Young Guns Yearling Breeding Bull Challenge If you follow Highway 20 in northwest South Dakota, ironically located between Buffalo and Bison, you ll drive through Prairie City. Don t blink or you ll miss it! On the west edge, you ll see some old rail cars on a hill out behind the buildings, more rail cars nestled along the shelterbelt. If you didn t know better, you d think a railroad buff lived there! You might be right. The Young Guns program moved to a new host ranch this past year, Rafter K Bar. Larry and Renee Carr have been overseeing the bulls and taking the opportunity to work on improvements for the bulls and, in the long run, their own operation. The year has had lots of experiences and Larry will be the first to admit, some challenges. But to his credit and through the sheer amount of time he has spent with them, this group of bulls has the best dispositions we have seen in this program. There is a lot of potential in the bull pen... Larry wanted to thank everyone for their assistance this year, including: Renee Carr, Marilyn Carr, Jud Seaman, Clyde Gorsuch, Sandy Limpert, Brodie Limpert, Aaron Moenkedick, Steve, Roxann & Paden McFarland, Zane Holcomb, Karen Conley, Todd Goetz, Kevin Leier, Moritz Espy, Boyd Meyer, John and Taber Cammack, Bob Penn, his good neighbors Rich and Richard, judges Perry Handyside and Chad Heim, Scranton Equity, Sandra Holcomb, DVM, Ultrasound Technician Kama Bruns, DTBA for the challenge and all the consignors for bringing great bulls for the contest! The Young Guns bull calves were received at Rafter K Bar mid-winter of The calves were put on free choice pellets and grass hay while acclimating to the ranch and the other calves. In mid-april, the pellets were removed from the pen of calves to condition them for pasture. With dry conditions looming, the bulls were turned out to grass on May 13. The grass was average and the bulls were rotated through four different pastures from spring to late fall. The were fed a bag or two of cake as needed to help with mineral consumption and also to keep them coming to the pickup. On September 10, the bulls were brought in to start their feed test. At that time, the bulls were weighed and given Ivermax injectable, Pulmagaurd PHM and 7 way. The bulls were put on free choice Scranton Equity Buffalo Grow pellets and free choice quality prairie hay. After 119 days on feed, the bulls were processed to pick the final cut for the sale. The bulls are being weaned off of feed in preparation for the upcoming breeding season. I hope you enjoy these bulls as much as I have. They are quiet and gentle with outstanding dispositions. They will just continue to grow and get better and better. ~Larry Carr YG Page 21
