3 Getting It Done - It Takes A Village... So what does it take to make these performance tested classes happen? Short of an army on a mission, it takes a lot of people, a lot of time and more dedication than you can imagine. Many of us had no idea what was in store when these ideas started bouncing around! A year long commitment from a host ranch willing to sacrifice pen and pasture space, bulls for the heifers and facilities to work animals, not to mention the time, anxiety and the perpetual state of the unknown...will it rain, will we have grass, will the heifers breed. It s enough to drive a normally sane person a little crazy. And while you re at it, don t forget to record all the data, field all the calls from consignors asking about the data, line up crews to help work the animals as needed, watch the groups like they are your own flesh and blood and agonize over every fight, every hook and, sadly, every injury or even death. So why do it? There is nothing like that thrill of seeing the bull in the group come in the chute and he s just starting to realize his potential and you know he s something special. Or that heifer that you ve admired all year and you cross your fingers that she s bred and you let out a sigh when the vet confirms it. Watching these animals grow and thrive throughout the year is nothing short of amazing. Selecting a bull calf for the Young Guns class is an educated guess. Picking a yearling heifer that you hope will go on to improve someone s breeding herd is pretty dicey, too. But it all pays off when you see the numbers, crunch the data and the phones start ringing off the hook with buyers wanting information and catalogs. Sorting through the groups and selecting the best of the best. That s how it boils down. The numbers tell the story for every animal. But just to keep it interesting, we add another wrinkle and let some fresh eyes view the animals in their everyday clothes and tell us what they think. This year, the live judging was handled by Perry Handyside and Chad Heim. They were tasked with placing every animal in both groups of bulls and heifers...first to last, top to bottom. It caused some anxiety. It took all day. It was difficult. They had to split hairs to sort the animals...it was that close. That is one of the most uniform set of heifers I ve ever seen, commented Perry later that night after they were done. You could take any one or all of them home and you won t regret it. The bulls were so close that we had to pick them apart to find something we didn t like, noted Chad. Trying to place them, especially the middle of the group, was nearly impossible. We went over and over and over them trying to find any little thing that you could discount them on and it was tough. That s what it s about. That s why we do it and why we only bring the top ones to the Black Hills Buffalo Classic. The Young Guns bulls in this catalog are the cream of the crop, the top end of over 70 plus animals in the class. The heifers are range tested and ready to work, just like Mother Nature designed them to do. We are proud to bring you these performance tested animals from some of the region s top consignors. We ve done the work so you can reap the rewards!
4 Girlz Gone Wild Two Year Old Bred Heifer Challenge After spending two years on the plains of western South Dakota, the Girlz Gone Wild heifers moved north this past year, up near the Young Guns bulls in the Slim Buttes area of northwestern South Dakota. Good, hard grass country with plenty of wide open spaces to travel and be a buffalo. Just right for young heifers to grow and meet the bull of their dreams! The Girlz Gone Wild spent nearly a year at Ben and Michelle Fox s ranch east of the Slim Buttes. With mild weather conditions all spring and summer, these heifers spent their time grazing, growing and mingling with some dandy bulls. No frills, no fat, no fluff. That s what this heifer program produces. Young, bred females that can go right to work when you take them home. The group of yearling heifers arrived at in early February. They were weighed and then transported to our ranch on February 17. They were put into a 20 acre lot and fed two pounds of 20% cake per head, per day while they acclimated and waited for the pastures to green up. The heifers were turned out in early May in the Far Pasture, which is around 600 acres. They were in this pasture for one month and then rotated to the 450 acre Middle pasture. With good moisture and excellent grazing conditions, we again rotated the group back to the Far Pasture where they stayed from September until the first of December. Around the first of December, we brought the heifers back to the Middle Pasture and started caking them with a 30% protein cake at the rate of 3 pounds per head every other day. They had free choice Wick s Livestock Mineral and Crystalyx tubs available at all times. In December when we were experiencing brutal below zero temps and wind chills, the heifers were fed some hay, but not regularly nor excessively. The heifers were bred by three bulls that ran with the group from early May until the were rounded up and transported back to the first week of January to be worked for the auction. Since their return to the Slim Buttes Ranch, the heifers have had free choice mineral and hay and have been turned out into a small pasture until they are ready to be transported to the auction in early February. 12 Young Guns Yearling Breeding Bull Challenge It s a long, lonely road back to, just south of Buffalo, South Dakota. Lying at the foot of the Slim Buttes in the Custer National Forest, it s the perfect environment to grow bulls...buffalo bulls. Long known for their ability to produce some of the best breeding bulls in the country, Sandy and Jacki Limpert, along with their son, Brodie and his wife Samantha, have opened their ranch to host the Young Guns Yearling Breeding Bull Challenge. With 73 head of bull calves coming into the ranch last spring, it was no easy task to maintain this group as they spent the year growing and thriving in prime buffalo country. This select group of breeding bull prospects is the top cut of that group of performance tested bulls. It represents opportunity for anyone who wants to improve their herd. The Young Guns bull calves were received at mid-winter of The calves were put on free choice pellets and grass hay while acclimating to the ranch and the other calves. In mid-april, the pellets were removed from the pen of calves to condition them for pasture. With good spring rains and mild weather, the bulls were turned out to grass on May 8. The grass was very lush and we rotated the bulls through five different pastures. We fed them two pounds of cake twice a week to help with mineral consumption and also to keep them coming to the pickup. On August 22 we brought the bulls in to start their feed test. At that time, the bulls were weighed and given Ivermax injectable, Pulmagaurd PHM and 7 way. The bulls were put on free choice pellets and grass hay. After 143 days on feed, the bulls were processed to pick the final cut for the sale. The bulls are being weaned off of feed in preparation for the upcoming breeding season. We are very proud of this set of bulls and think they would make a nice addition to anyone s herd. See you at the sale! Sandy Limpert YG Page 12
