1 2018 Kossuth County 4-H & FFA Fair July 30 - August 4, 2018 STATIC ENTRY GUIDE AND FAIR CLASS LIST It is the member s responsibility to properly enter exhibits by deadlines listed in this book, and to make all Fair exhibit entries, both livestock and Static, online with FairEntry. This website is available through the Extension Office Youth & 4-H website. Entries must be made on or before July 15. It is the participant s responsibility to enter this information online. Please use this book as your reference in making entries for the 2018 Kossuth County Fair Static Classes. If you have any questions about what class to enter an exhibit in, please contact the ISU Extension & Outreach- Kossuth County Office. 3 KOSSUTH COUNTY FAIR 4-H OBJECTIVES For 4-H Youth: To encourage 4-H youth to learn and apply practical methods of production, management, and/or marketing of their projects. To assist 4-H youth in their personal development and character growth in honesty, integrity, responsibility, citizenship, and leadership skills. To provide an opportunity for 4-H youth to measure their progress and skills against accepted standards. To provide an opportunity for 4-H youth to participate in a wide variety of program opportunities. To provide an opportunity for 4-H youth to gain personal satisfaction, meet new people, share ideas and learn to work cooperatively with others. 8 **MEMBER CONDUCT POLICY** THE BELOW POLICIES APPLY TO ALL 4-H/FFA MEMBERS WHO ATTEND THE FAIR, THEIR FAMILIES, AND NON-FAMILY WHO MAY HELP THE YOUTH EXHIBITOR. 1. If an illegal act is conducted at a 4-H event, the adult volunteer will call the implicated 4-Her s parents and ask that they be removed from the event ASAP and contact the appropriate legal authorities, as necessary. The adult volunteer must contact the Extension Office about the incident. The 4-H er will be required to provide a written explanation or apology for this incident to the Youth Committee (or sub-committee) within one month of the incident. If the essay or personal interview is not conducted within a month of the incident, the Youth Committee may impose restrictions on participation in future 4-H events. 2. Iowa Exhibitor Youth Code of Ethics (page 7), Code of Conduct for Iowa 4-H Youth and Families (page 8-9) will be enforced. Codes of Ethics and Conduct include non-family who help 4-H exhibitors. 3. Violation of the Code of Ethics shall receive a verbal warning then a written warning before severe action is taken. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FAIR WEEK - when violations will be dealt with on a case by case basis decided by the grievance committee. 4. Grievance committee: File a written explanation of your dispute with $50 at the 4-H Livestock Office. If it is a founded grievance, your $50 will be returned. The grievance committee will meet and address the issue. The committee is made up of members of the fair board, youth committee, 4-H staff, County 4-H Council, FFA staff or officer, and superintendent of the department of the infraction. Names of the committee members will be identified before the fair begins. 5. Members who miss a Livestock ID deadline or have a late Fair Entry must submit a written reason for missing and must appear in front of the Youth Committee to present request for approval. Youth Committee has the right to decide on a case by case basis each scenario, however, habitual offenders will not be allowed to show. 8

9 ***4-H STATIC EXHIBIT DEPARTMENT*** This department is open to youth who are participating in 4-H Youth Development Programs conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. All exhibitors are responsible to read and comply with the Kossuth County Fair 4-H General Exhibit Rules, 4-H General Rules and Regulations, and all 4-H department exhibit class rules and regulations. KOSSUTH COUNTY SPECIFIC EXHIBIT RULES 1. All exhibits must be entered into FairEntry Online by July A 4-H'er may enter a maximum of FIVE entries per project area (must be different exhibits & goals). 3. Judges have a limited amount of time to evaluate exhibits. The information requested needs to be well organized and brief H'ers who have completed 4th grade through 12th grade (or that equivalent) are eligible to exhibit at the Kossuth County Fair. Iowa State Fair selections must be from exhibitors in 5 th -12 th grade. Exception: group exhibits from an entire club may include 4th grade members. Junior Recognition selections will be made for youth in 4th grade. Youth involved in an Extension Clover Kids program during the year may exhibit in the Clover Kids class. 5. All static exhibits will be judged the Monday of fair week. Clubs will be given a specific time block to be judged. Entries will be put in place for display upon completion of judging. Only the 4-H'er is to respond to questions from the judge during conference judging, except in extenuating circumstances. If a member is unable to be present for judging, arrangements need to be made with the club leader and the Extension Office. 6. All exhibits must remain until Sunday, last day of the fair and must be checked out with the club leader or representative before being removed from the 4-H Exhibits Building. Release time is Sunday 8:00 a.m. - Noon. Exhibitors removing exhibits before 8:00 a.m. will lose all premiums and recognitions. The exhibitor will not be able to exhibit in that area next year. 7. If any special equipment such as electricity, computer, and display aids etc. is needed for your exhibit you must bring with you on judging day or visit with the Extension staff. 8. Static exhibits will receive blue, red, or white ribbons. Junior Recognition will receive purple single streamer ribbons, State Fair Alternates will receive lavender triple streamers, State Fair Selections will receive purple triple streamer ribbons and Considered For State will receive certificates. Exhibitors receiving the award of Junior Recognition, State Fair Alternate or State Fair Selection will only receive one ribbon. 9. Fair premiums will be paid for all static entries: $2.50 -purple/lavender: $2.00 blue or green: $1.50 red: $1.00 white. 10. Corporate or business sponsorship or logos on any banner or decorations of any 4-H/FFA Exhibits are not allowed. EXHIBIT PREPARATION 1. FairEntry Cards are to be picked up at the check in desk of the 4-H Exhibits Building upon arrival for judging. 2. Each item in an exhibit must be securely labeled, including the name of the county, class number, and exhibitor s name before arriving for judging. 3. A written explanation, audio recording, or video recording is to be included as part of each exhibit. The exhibitor should respond briefly to the following questions about the exhibit: What did you plan to learn or do? (What was your exhibit goal(s)?) What steps did you take to learn or do this? What were the most important things you learned? ***Check for additional requirements in exhibit classes for food and nutrition, photography, and visual art classes. 4. Any additional story or explanation may be taped separately on the exhibit or written on the back of the exhibitor card. 9

10 GENERAL EXHIBIT RULES 1. Eligible exhibits are an outgrowth of work done as a planned part of the 4-H ers participation in 4-H projects or programs during the current 4-H year. Exhibits can be done by an individual or group and may represent all or part of the learning in the project or program. 2. Exhibitors in 4-H classes are not eligible to exhibit in a similar department of the FFA divisions or vice-versa. See also 4-H Department General Rules and Regulations. 3. Exhibits previously entered in an FFA Ag Science Fair or any other FFA event or competition may not be entered in any 4-H exhibit class. 4. Endangered and threatened plants and animals (includes insects), or songbird feathers and nests may NOT be used in any exhibit. 5. Copyrighted materials and designs may not be used in an exhibit that is presented as original work by the exhibitor. Exhibitors must include permission from the copyright holder/owner when using copyrighted materials. Exhibitors must give proper credit to the original source of all materials/designs used in exhibits. (See also special rules for Visual Arts and general copyright information for 4-H ers.) 6. If the exhibitor chooses a display to illustrate what was learned: Posters may not exceed 24 x 36 in size. Chart boards, graph boards, project presentation boards, model displays, etc., may not exceed 48 x 48 in size. Maximum size is determined by measuring the flat (unfolded) dimensions. Display boxes may not exceed 28 x 22 in height or width and 12 in depth. 7. The 4-H er s goal and applicable exhibit standards will form the basis of the evaluation process. Evaluation criteria will include demonstrated learning, workmanship and techniques, and general appearance and design. Exhibitors will receive written evaluation comments on the exhibits and a blue, red, or white Iowa State Fair exhibitor s ribbon. Refer to exhibit class evaluation rubrics for detailed evaluation criteria in each class. Rubrics are located on each 4-H project page at 8. Exhibits that do not comply with the class description, size guidelines, copyright restrictions, safety and approved methods will be disqualified and not put on public display. 9. All judges decisions are final. 10. Due to security, 4-H ers are discouraged from sending items that have special meaning and historical value as the exhibit or part of an exhibit. IOWA STATE FAIR EXHIBIT RULES 1. State Fair selections are to be properly prepared as indicated by State Fair Exhibit rules and may be left at the 4-H Exhibits building for transfer to the Iowa State Fair. If adjustments need to be made, exhibits must be delivered to the Extension Office by noon on Monday following the fair. Check for details at the Information Desk before check out at the fair. All exhibitors are responsible for packing materials and to read and comply with the fair rules for the exhibit to be eligible for fair participation. Exhibitor with large items, or items that can not be carried by 1-2 people, selected for State Fair will be responsible for transporting their exhibit to and from the Iowa State Fair. Check with the Extension staff on details and requirements. 2. The Iowa State Fair and Iowa State University Extension will use diligence to insure the safety of articles entered for exhibition after their arrival and placement. However, they will not be responsible for damage or loss by accident, fire, theft, etc. 3. The Iowa State Fair Management will in no case assume or pay transportation or delivery charges on articles sent for exhibition. 4. Instead of premium money for exhibits counties will be awarded a pro-rata amount of travel money based on participation and distance from Des Moines. Distance determination will be based on the established zones as determined by the Iowa State Fair. 5. No entry fee is required. The exhibit should be selected at a county event. All entries must be made in the name of the county and certified by an Extension staff member. 6. All exhibits must reach the 4-H Exhibits Building on entry day, Tuesday, August 7. Exceptions: Exhibitors participating in alternative evaluation/ educational learning experiences will enter exhibits as determined for program participation. 7. All exhibits must remain until Sunday, August 19, and checked out with the department superintendents before being removed from the 4-H Exhibits Building. RELEASE TIME 7:00 PM 8:30 PM, Sunday, August 19, or Monday, August 20, 9:00-11:30 AM. All persons picking up (one or more) exhibits must adhere to this schedule and county assigned time. 10

11 DIVISION 108: CHALLENGE CLASSES FOOD & NUTRITION CHALLENGE 1. Any 4-H member is eligible to enter. Member does not have to be enrolled in the 4-H Food and Nutrition project. 2. Goal questions do not need to be completed. 3. Members may enter one entry online in FairEntry by July 15. This entry is an additional entry to the quota of Family & Consumer Science exhibits. 4. All entries in the challenge class will be judged on non-livestock judging day by a specifically identified judge. Ribbon placing will be given. 5. Entry should be transported in a plastic container with lid which is labeled with the member s name and club on the back. 6. The purpose of this contest is to use only the following recipe. Consistency and detail to instructions are important. 7. The top exhibit in each age division will be selected and receive a purple ribbon Recipe- Fresh Tomato Salsa (Pico de Gallo) (Recipe courtesy of simplyrecipes.com) Ingredients: 3 Roma fresh tomatoes (from 1 lb to 1 1/2 lb), stems removed 1/2 red onion 1/2 jalapeño pepper (stems, ribs, seeds removed), less or more to taste Juice of one lime 1/2 cup chopped cilantro Salt and pepper to taste Pinch of dried oregano (crumble in your fingers before adding), more to taste Pinch of ground cumin, more to taste Directions 1. Prep the tomatoes, peppers, and onions: Start by roughly chopping the tomatoes, peppers, and onions. Be very careful while handling the peppers. If you can, avoid touching the cut peppers with your hands. (Disposable gloves or plastic sandwich bags can protect your hands.) Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water after handling and avoid touching your eyes for several hours. 2. Finely dice vegetables: Place all of the ingredients in a food processor. Pulse only a few times, just enough to finely dice the ingredients, not enough to purée. If you don't have a food processor, you can finely dice by hand. 3. Adjust seasonings: Place in a serving bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. If the peppers make the salsa too hot, add some more chopped tomato. If not hot enough, carefully add a few slivers of pepper at a time, or add a little more ground cumin. 4. Let sit for an hour for the flavors to combine. Tortilla chips will be provided at the tasting. Only the Salsa must be made and presented PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE Fair Photography Challenge Theme: Where the Wild Things Are 2. 4-H er does not have to be entered in the 4-H Photography project. 3. The photograph entered in the challenge cannot be entered into another class at the fair H er can have only one entry in the Photography Challenge Class. 5. The photograph must follow the theme. Photos must be the work of the 4-H er during the current project year and may not be edited on the computer. 6. The photograph must be 4x6 and may be color or black and white. 7. No mats, frames, or glass are permitted. 8. Please place in a plastic zip-lock bag for protection. 9. No captions permitted. Entry may be titled on the back. 10. Entry tag should be included in the plastic bag, but the goal section does not need to be completed. 11. Entry will be judged on how it meets criteria, creativity, technical quality, exhibitor s evaluation, and overall appearance. 11

12 DIVISION 107: OTHER OPPORTUNITIES H CLUB BOOTH DECORATION CONTEST Booth Construction: Saturday or Sunday before the Fair Booth Tear Down: Sunday after the Fair Rules: 1. All 4-H clubs, except clubs with 100% livestock projects only, must exhibit a booth at the fair in the 4-H Building. 2. The theme for the booths will be the same as the current year 4-H Conference. Be original and creative this is important for judging Theme is Your Passport to Adventure 3. When constructing a booth: a. NO TAPE OR STAPLES may be used on walls or dividers. b. Nails are not permitted. c. No spray paint is to be used inside the 4-H Building. All spraying should be done before booth set up. No spraying is to be done on pavement or near a building. 4. Clubs will receive: $50 for first place, $30 for second place, $20 for third place H Booths must be removed Sunday after the fair. Booths CANNOT be removed Saturday of the fair. 6. BOOTH JUDGING CRITERIA: a. Theme and Originality b. Clearly shows: Club name, 4-H pledge and/or motto, appropriate 4-H emblems and logos c. Attracts interest d. Appearance - projects are well arranged and labeled HOBBIES, KITS & CRAFTS Rules: 1. This class is for exhibits resulting from the use of kits or pre-formed molds to make or develop a product or item. 2. Kits are defined as any prepackaged item where the materials and the design are predetermined by the manufacturer. 3. Examples of pre-formed molds would be purchased green ware or white ware. 4. Items may be constructed of any medium. Examples include model rockets, collections, cross stitch or needlework, bird houses from a kit, etc. 5. An exhibitor goal card is required. 6. No specific project enrollment is required. 7. Evaluation will be based on craftsmanship and choice of design in relation to the information required in General Exhibit Rule These exhibits will not be considered for State Fair CLOVER KIDS PROGRAM Clover Kids is a special program designed to get youth in Kindergarten through Third grade involved in 4-H. Members that belong to a Clover Kids group will be allowed to bring up to three static fair entries. Open class shows (ex. bucket calf, pet or bottle lamb) are not counted in the total of three. 12

13 **CLOTHING EVENTS** DIVISION 121: 4-H FASHION REVUE Any eligible Kossuth 4-H member (boy or girl) may enter. To be eligible a member must: 1. Entry deadline is July 15 and will be entered through FairEntry Online. 2. This division will be judged on the Monday of Static Judging at the fair. A style show will be held the same day. 3. Model a garment or outfit the entrant has constructed, hand-knitted, machine-knitted, or crocheted during the current 4-H year. a. A garment or outfit consisting of one to three pieces such as party clothes, tailored suits, vest, slacks, skirt, active sportswear and/or coats are acceptable as Fashion Revue entries. b. Blouses, shirts, and sweaters are usually considered as garments. If they are used to complete an outfit, they may be constructed or selected. c. All other accessories and undergarments may be made or selected. 4. Submit the day of the county judging: a. 4-H Clothing Event Report Form (available at the Extension Office) b. Color photo of entrant wearing outfit to be modeled (attached to the form in the space provided). This is optional for Intermediates and Juniors. 5. Outfits or accessories which will be worn in the State Clothing Event program may not be entered as a State Fair exhibit from the county (Seniors only). 6. Four Fashion Revue Senior participants will be eligible to represent each county at the State Fair with no more than two (2) participants from any one category (female, male, or minority). Participants must be in the 4-H Senior designated level (grades 9-12). 7. Junior 4-H ers (grades 4-6) and Intermediate 4-H ers (grades 7 & 8) cannot compete at the State Fair but a Court of Honor selected in each grade division will be chosen at the county level (as long as there are at least four participants in the division). 8. Participation ribbons will be given to each entrant. Premiums will be given. 9. A Court of Honor will be selected for the top individuals in each age division. Winners will be announced after the style show. 10. Exhibitors may also enter the garment in a clothing class above. CLASS AWARDS: (MEDALLIONS) 12101: Junior 4-H Fashion Revue Champion Junior 4-H Fashion Revue 12102: Intermediate 4-H Fashion Revue Champion Intermediate 4-H Fashion Revue 12103: Senior 4-H Fashion Revue Champion Senior 4-H Fashion Revue DIVISION 122: 4-H CLOTHING SELECTION Any eligible Kossuth 4-H member (boy or girl) may enter. To be eligible a member must: 1. Entry deadline is July 15 and will be entered through FairEntry Online. 2. This division will be judged on the Monday of Static Judging at the fair. A style show will be held the same day. 3. Select and/or purchase an outfit that represents the 4-Her s goal or intended use for the selected outfit. 4. Have had individual planned or county experience(s) in choosing shopping alternatives, evaluating fit, quality and construction features price and cost comparison. 5. Model the clothing they have selected and purchased. Outfits may be selected and/or purchased from any source, including consignment shops, used clothing stores, etc. Clothing items which are home-sewn are not eligible unless the completed garment was purchased from a used clothing source. Clothing items which are custom sewn specifically for the participant are not eligible. 6. Submit the day of the county judging: a. 4-H Clothing Event Report Form (available at the Extension Office) b. Color photo of entrant wearing outfit to be modeled, (attached to the form in the space provided). This is optional for Intermediates and Juniors. 7. Outfits or accessories which will be worn in the Clothing Event program may not be entered as a State Fair exhibit from the county. 13

14 8. Three Clothing Selection participants (one female, one male, one minority) will be eligible to represent each county. Participants must be in the 4-H Senior designated level (grades 9-12) H ers may participate only one time in the Iowa State Fair Clothing Selection program. 10. Junior 4-H ers (grades 4-6) and Intermediate 4-H ers (grades 7 & 8) cannot compete at the State Fair, but a Court of Honor selected in each grade division will be chosen at the county level (as long as there are at least four participants in the division). 11. Participation ribbons will be given to each entrant. Premiums will be given. 12. A Court of Honor will be selected for the top individuals in each age division. Winners will be announced after the style show. 13. Exhibitors may also enter the garment in a clothing class above. CLASSES: AWARDS: (MEDALLIONS) 12201: Junior 4-H Clothing Selection Champion Junior Clothing Selection 12201: Intermediate 4-H Clothing Selection Champion Intermediate Clothing Selection 12202: Senior 4-H Clothing Selection Champion Senior Clothing Selection DIVISION 123- THE $15 CHALLENGE Any eligible Kossuth 4-H member (boy or girl) may enter. To be eligible a member must: 1. Entry deadline is July 15 and will be entered through FairEntry Online. 2. This division will be judged on the Monday of Static Judging at the fair. A style show will be held the same day. 3. Purchase an outfit that represents the 4-Her s intended use for the selected outfit. 4. Have had individual or county experience(s) in choosing shopping alternatives, evaluating fit, quality, and construction features, price and cost comparison. 5. Outfits must be purchased at a garage sale, consignment store, or resale shop (i.e. Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other stores of this type. Hand-me-downs or clothing as gifts that were selected by the 4-Her belong in Clothing Selection. 6. Cost of outfit must be $15 or less, not including shoes, accessories, or undergarments. 7. Submit the day of the county judging: a. 4-H Clothing Event Report Form (available at the Extension Office) b. Color photo of entrant wearing outfit to be modeled (attached to the form in the space provided). c. Receipt(s) MUST be turned in with Clothing Event Form. 8. Outfits or accessories which will be worn in the State Clothing Event program may not be entered as a State Fair exhibit from the county (Seniors only). 9. Three $15 Challenge participants (one female, one male, one minority) will be eligible to represent each county for state fair. Participants must be in the 4-H senior designated level (grades 9-12) H ers may participate only one time in the Iowa State Fair $15 Challenge program. 11. Junior 4-H ers (grades 4-6) and Intermediate 4-H ers (grades 7 & 8) cannot compete at the State Fair but a Court of Honor selected in each grade division will be chosen at the county level (as long as there are at least four participants in the division). 12. 15 **COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT** 1. 4-H clubs/groups will not be limited on the number of entries in this division. All entrants must be members in good standing in a 4-H group or program. Any 4-H'er who has attended college or its equivalent is ineligible. Participants are limited to one entry per class. 2. Communication presentations will be given the Monday of Static judging at the Fair. 3. Entry deadline is July Entrants who have completed fifth grade may represent the county at the State Fair with Educational Presentations, Working Exhibits, 4-H Poster Communications or Share the Fun, if selected. Preference may be given to Intermediates and Seniors. Extemporaneous Speaking is open to Senior members only on the county and state level. All entrants are eligible for the Clay County Fair. 5. There is no limit on the number of times a 4-H'er may represent the county in the communications department at the State Fair. 6. A communications entry may represent the county in only one event beyond the county (i.e., Clay County or State Fair) in any given year. Preference may be given to those who have not previously represented the county at a specific level. 7. To represent the county at the State Fair, up to six educational presentations, four Working Exhibits, three Share the Fun acts, two Extemporaneous Speaking contestants and two 4-H Poster Communication exhibits may be selected. For the Clay County Fair district program, one educational presentation, one working exhibit and one Share the Fun act may be selected. All entries representing the county must be blue ribbon winners. 8. All exhibits, activities and programs must represent appropriate safety procedures in the development of the exhibit and during the evaluation process. This includes static exhibits and activities revolving around the communications program. 4-H'ers doing a communication entry that involves food must be concerned for the safety of the food they are using. 4-H'ers should use sanitary and safe procedures and methods at all times. 9. Endangered and threatened plants and animals (includes insect), or songbird feathers & nests should NOT be used in any exhibit. 10. For Educational Presentations and Working Exhibits, the topic selection should be an outgrowth of the presenter s 4-H experience or 4-H project work. 11. Dress Code: 4-H'ers participating in the 4-H communications programs are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing representative of the 4-H Youth Program and/or the topic of the presentation. If clothing contributes to the topic being presented, such as wearing a bee keeper s outfit while doing a presentation or working exhibit on bee raising, the 4-H'ers should be encouraged to wear such clothing. Where distinctive clothing is not involved, clothing that alerts the public that it is a 4-H'er giving a presentation, working exhibit or extemporaneous speech is strongly encouraged. 12. Presentations, working exhibits, poster communications entries will be rated with a blue, red, or white ribbon. Share the Fun entries will receive participation ribbons. DIVISION 111: EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS Purpose: Provide an opportunity for 4-H ers to demonstrate communication skills by presenting knowledge, information, or a process to an audience in order to gain a desired response. 1. Presentations may be given by one or more 4-H'ers and may be about any 4-H related subject which is an outgrowth of his/her 4-H experience. A team made up of mixed ages must be entered in the class of the oldest team member. 2. The topic of the presentation should determine its length, but Intermediate and Senior presentations should not exceed 20 minutes. Juniors should not exceed 15 minutes. 3. Educational presentation participants at the state level are expected to include an introduction, body, summary/conclusion. 4. A 4-H member may participate in only one educational presentation per year at the state level. CLASSES: Educational Presentations (Junior) must have completed 5th or 6th grade in must not exceed 15 minutes Educational Presentations (Intermediate/Senior) must have completed 7th -12th grade in 2018-must not exceed 20 minutes 15

16 DIVISION 112: WORKING EXHIBITS Purpose: Provide an opportunity for 4-H ers to communicate, interact with, and teach an audience in an informal and experiential way. 1. Working exhibits provide an opportunity for youth to communicate and interact with an audience in an informal way. 2. Many stages of the exhibit or product should be ready so that any step can be discussed. No set format should be used. Questions that might be asked as starters are: Have you seen...? Would you like to know how to...? May I show you how...? 3. The best subjects involve action by the youth or involve the audience in some doing, feeling, tasting, smelling, or judging. The youth's subject should be an outgrowth of his/her 4-H experience. It is important that the subject used in the working exhibit be of interest to fair audiences. 4. Working exhibits will be scheduled for minutes. 5. A 4-H member may participate in only one working exhibit per year at the state level. CLASSES Working Exhibit (Junior) must have completed 5th or 6th grade in not to exceed 25 minutes Working Exhibit (Intermediate/Senior) must have completed 7th -12th grade in not to exceed 45 minutes DIVISION 113: SHARE THE FUN PROGRAM Purpose: Provide an opportunity for 4-H ers to share their skills and talents before an audience purely for the sake of enjoyment. 1. Share the Fun is to provide an opportunity for 4-H'ers to improve presentation skills, to share the fun and fellowship of other 4-H members, to encourage and help leaders put fun into the 4-H & Youth Program, to afford an opportunity for Kossuth County to be represented in the State Fair and District Share the Fun Programs, and to get young people involved. 2. There will be no age divisions- members of any 4-H club or 4-H special interest group in Kossuth County are eligible to participate. 3. All participants will be given participation ribbons. Entries will be evaluated on the basis of quality, audience appeal, and appearance. 4. All entries are limited to a maximum of 8 minutes. There is no minimum length. 5. Presentations may be given by one or more individuals (including an entire club) and may be anything appropriate for entertaining the variety of ages that attend the fair, including (but not limited to) skits, songs, stunts, short one-act plays, dances (folk, square, modern, tap), etc. Presentation space will be somewhat limited; if there is a question on this contact the Extension Office prior to entry. 6. It is expected that entrants who have participated previously not repeat the same performance. CLASS Share the Fun 16

17 DIVISION 114: EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING Purpose: Encourage the development of communication skills by providing an opportunity to think, organize thoughts, prepare a speech, and respond to questions when given a limited amount of preparation time. 1. All participants must have completed 9th grade. 2. Each speech shall be the result of the 4-H'ers own effort using approved reference materials, which the contestant may bring into the preparation room. No other assistance will be allowed. Plain 3" x 5" note cards will be provided and may be used during the speech. 3. Each speech shall be not less than four or more than six minutes with five minutes additional time allowed for related questions. 4. Contestants are not permitted to use any props, gadgets, posters or audio visuals of any sort. A podium will not be provided. 5. All speeches will be judged and two entries may be selected for the Iowa State Fair. Program format: 1. Thirty minutes before the program, each participant will draw three of the available topics, selecting one to speak on. 2. The selected topic will not be available to the other participants in the speaker s assigned room. The general nature of the topics will relate to 4-H. The other two topics drawn but not chosen will be returned to the available topics for the other participants. 3. A preparation room is to be used with one participant per speaking site admitted initially and one additional participant per speaking site admitted each 15 minutes as the program progresses. A participant may not leave the preparation room until it is time to speak, nor may a participant receive help from a parent, leader, other adult or any other youth. A program official will assist participants with the time requirements. 4. All reference material will be screened by a program official on the following basis: Participant may bring his/her own books, magazines or newspaper clippings for reference during the thirty minutes of preparation. Reference material must be printed material such as books or magazines (cannot be notes, outlines or speeches prepared by the participant or by another person for use in this program). Some relevant reference material will be available in the preparation room. This material will consist of historical material related to the 4-H program. 5. Each speech shall be the result of the 4-H ers own efforts using approved reference material that a participant may bring to the preparation room. No other assistance may be provided. Plain note cards will be provided for each participant in the preparation room. If notes are used, the note cards provided must be used in delivering the speech. 6. Only notes made during the preparation period may be used. 7. Each speech shall be not less than four but no more than six minutes with five minutes additional time allowed for related questions, which shall be asked by the judge. The participant will be shown time cards in an ascending order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) by the time keeper. Stop will be said at six minutes. 8. The program timekeeper will introduce each participant by name and the county he/she represents. The participant will be expected to introduce his/her speech by title only. 9. Participants are not permitted to use any props, gadgets, posters or audiovisuals of any sort. A podium not will be available. 10. Speeches will be evaluated using the following criteria: Content related to topic. Knowledge of the subject. Organization of material. Power of expression. Voice. Stage presence. General effect. Response to questions. 11. A judge s critique/conference with each participant will be included as a part of the program. CLASS Extemporaneous Speaking 17

18 DIVISION 401: HORTICULTURE 40100: VEGETABLES From one to three different kinds of vegetables displayed in one appropriate size container (box) no larger than 15 x 30 x 6. Check out Preparing Vegetables for the Fair at the website below. Exhibits that do not follow these recommendations will be discounted one ribbon grouping. Each kind or variety will be evaluated separately. Please list each vegetable separately on the fair exhibit entry form : FLOWERS One or three stems as appropriate. Note: Intermediate and Senior exhibitors must know the variety of their specimen or they will be lowered one ribbon placing : MOST UNUSUAL Vegetable or flower. This is a fun class that the exhibit could be odd shaped or unusually large : HOUSE PLANTS Started and potted by a 4-H member during the past year (limited to one container). To be judged on general condition of the plant and appropriateness of container (size, type, kind of material, etc.; decorative qualities of container will not be considering in judging). Attach folder indicating how and when the plant was obtained, care given, what was learned and other project details. 19 IOWA STATE FAIR ELIGIBLE STATIC CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Most exhibit classes have specific guidelines and requirements that will be included in the judging process. Members are highly encouraged go to to find information about judging criteria for exhibits that they create from their 4-H project learning. ANIMALS Animal Science - An exhibit (other than the animal itself) that shows the learning about a large or small animal including beef, dairy cattle, dairy goats, dogs, horse & pony, meat goats, pets, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine. Ownership of any animal is not required Veterinary Science - An exhibit that shows learning about keeping animals healthy. AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES Crop Production - An exhibit that shows learning about the growth, use, and value of field crops Environment and Sustainability - An exhibit that shows the connections between humans and their environment including energy, stewardship, conservation, entomology, fish and wildlife, or forestry. Includes collections Horticulture and Plant Science- An exhibit that shows learning about the growth, use, and value of plants, soils, small fruit production, vegetable and flower gardens, plant nutrition, careers, etc. (Garden crops and herbs are exhibited in classes in the 4-H Horticulture Department under 4-H Livestock.) Home Grounds Improvement An exhibit that shows learning about landscape plans, selection of landscape plants, ornamental garden features, home yard improvement, storage sheds, careers, etc Outdoor Adventures - An exhibit that shows learning about backpacking, biking, camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, or other outdoor activities Safety and Education in Shooting Sports - An exhibit that shows learning about safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment or wildlife management. (The exhibit may not include actual firearms; archery equipment allowed if tips are removed from arrows.) Other Agriculture and Natural Resources - An exhibit that shows learning about agriculture or natural resources and does not fit in any of the classes listed above. CREATIVE ARTS Music - An exhibit that shows learning about musical performance, composition and arrangements, instruments, musical styles or history Photography - An exhibit, either photo(s) or an educational display, that shows learning about photography from choosing a camera to modifying your photo. Still photos only, not video. Photography Special Rules: 1. Photographs may be either black and white or color. They may be processed from negatives, slides, or digital cameras and computer manipulation programs. Photographs must have been taken since your county fair of the previous year. 2. Photographs should be a minimum of 4 x 6. Finished size (including mounting/matting) of single photographs may not exceed 11 x 14. Exception: Panoramic photos must not exceed 24 in length. 3. All photographs must be printed on photographic paper. 4. Mounted photos can be (a) flush-mounted [no board showing] on mounting board, or (b) with mount borders [window mat or flat mount directly on board]. Exhibitors may cut their own mounting boards, use ready-cut window mats or have matting done professionally Hers are responsible for design decisions such as border, color and size. Framed photographs (including floating frames) will not be judged. 6. Non-mounted photos may be exhibited in a clear plastic covering. 7. A series is a group of photographs [3 to 5] that are related or tell a step-by-step story. Photographs must be mounted together in story order or sequence. Finished size of individual photographs in a series should not exceed 6 x 8. 19

20 8. Digitally altered photos should include a copy of the photo before changes. 9. Subject matter of photographs must be in good taste and be appropriate for public display in a 4-H setting. 10.Photographs depicting unsafe practices or illegal activities will not be displayed. 11.Iowa State Fair 4-H photography exhibitors must use the Photo Exhibit Label to provide required information for photo exhibits. 12.Exhibitors entered in 4-H Photography are not eligible to exhibit in the FFA Photography show and vice-versa Digital Photography Exhibit A photo or series of photos submitted electronically, not printed. Photos in this class will be submitted, viewed, evaluated, and displayed electronically. Digital Photography Exhibit Special Rules: 1. Photographs may be either black and white or color. 2. Photographs will not be printed. 3. Entries may be a single photo or a series of photos. A series is a group of photographs (3 to 5) that are related or tell a step-bystep story. Series photo entries must have all photos in the series viewable at the same time. 4. Photos entered should be submitted in the highest resolution possible. A finished file size of 1 MB 3 MB is recommended. 5. Photos should be submitted in an acceptable and commonly used format for ease of viewing. 6. Subject matter of photographs must be in good taste and be appropriate for public display in a 4-H setting. 7. Photographs depicting unsafe practices or illegal activities will not be displayed. 8. Iowa State Fair 4-H photography exhibitors must use the Photo Exhibit Label to provide required information for photo exhibits. The Photo Exhibit Label may be submitted electronically with the photo entry. 9. Photos entered in this class will be evaluated on the same evaluation criteria used for printed photographs. 10. Exhibitors entered in 4-H Photography are not eligible to exhibit in the FFA Photography show and vice-versa Alternative/Creative Photography A single photograph or photographic image that has been created with an alternative photographic process, or a photograph that was creatively edited or modified beyond reality in a creative, imaginative and experimental way to make it more interesting and visually engaging. Could be a composite of multiple overlapped photographs. Alternative/Creative Photography Special Rules: 1. Photograph/Image must be mounted on foam core no smaller than 4 x4 and no larger than 10 x 10 in height and width. No matting and no framing is allowed, put your creativity into the photography! 2. Photograph/Image can be created from film negative, digital negative, or digitally manipulated in computer. 3. Photograph must be on photo paper, canvas, or other flat material. 4. Exhibit must have Photo Exhibit Label on back with required information for photo exhibits. Include information about the processes used. 5. Subject matter must be in good taste and be appropriate for public display in a 4-H setting, photographs depicting unsafe practices or illegal activities will not be displayed Photography Idea/Educational Display - An exhibit that demonstrates learning about photography that does not fit into any previous photography class. This class includes photos printed on canvas, fabric, ceramic, etc. as part of an educational display showing learning about printing techniques, display, merchandising, etc Visual Arts - An exhibit that shows learning through original art, exploration of an art technique, or study of any other visual arts topic. Visual Arts Special Rules: 1. Exhibits made from kits or preformed molds will not be accepted. Exception: Preformed molds (greenware, whiteware) may be used to provide the appropriate surface for a process technique or application of original design. 2. If the exhibit is a finished art object, the source or inspiration of the design, design sketches, or other process for creating the object and design must be included. 3. Original works of art must be a creative expression of a design unique to the artist, or represent a significant modification to an existing design to make a new and original statement by the artist. 4. Exhibition of derivative works created by a 4-H er is prohibited without the written permission of the original copyright holder/owner. Use of copyrighted or trademarked designs, images, logos, or materials in 4 H visual arts exhibits is prohibited unless written permission has been obtained from the copyright or trademark holder/owner.
