3 Dear Friends: The Gill Red Angus pledge to our commercial customers - YOU BUY OUR BULLS. WE WILL BID ON YOUR CALVES. We traveled the country this fall and bid on over 5,000 head of feeder calves from September to January. The quality of the Gill Red Angus-sired calves came shining through as they either topped the market or came in a close second. We would like to welcome all of you to our annual production sale. A lot has changed at Gill Red Angus since our last sale. We have changed our calving date from March to May 15th. This will be our last spring sale. We have scheduled our next sale for Dec. 7, 2005, at which time we will be selling only 18-monthold bulls. These 18-month-old bulls will be wintered on a ration to gain two pounds per day until grass time. They will stay on grass until sale time this fall and will be cake broke. They should be in the right condition to be turned out and wintered with your older bulls. Last spring we calved out about half of the registered cows and all of the commercial cows in May and June. This year all of our cows are due to start calving May 15th. We shortened our breeding season to only 45 days. This fall and winter we traveled a lot of miles bidding on our customers' calves and yearlings. We bid on calves from Faith, S.D., to Motly, Minn., and points in between. The calves that we purchased were sent to the Samson Feedlot near Platte Center, Neb. At this time Scott Mueller, owner/manager of Samson is planning to be here sale day. This should give you a chance to visit with him about your feeder cattle. For those of you that aren t familiar with our program, it works like this. If you are a customer of ours, and you let us know when you will be selling your feeder cattle, we will be ringside to bid on them to make sure they bring what they are worth on that day. The price we can pay depends on the futures market. The two-year-old bulls being offered were the youngest calves born in the spring of These bulls have not been offered for sale before. Last winter these bulls were fed to gain two pounds a day until May when they were turned out on grass. They were brought in October 6 and fed until sale time. These bulls are grown out well, but are not hog fat. The yearling bulls have grown well this winter. We fed the same ration as last year, and the bulls are heavier, due to the fact that they weaned off heavier and a very mild winter. The Gills Several years ago we began looking for opportunities to achieve a competitive advantage in the beef industry. To gain that advantage we needed to be a part of a coordinated system that provides a consistent, low-cost, uniform product to the market place. This concept has evolved into working with Gill Red Angus, which produces genetics that provide high-growth bulls that meet premium carcass specifications. These characteristics allow us to pass on a higher value to producers while still reducing our costs of production. Gill Red Angus has been a leader in working with us to identify producers who are buying these bulls. When the producer markets their calves, the Gills have been representing us by bidding on the cattle that will fit our objectives. Once purchased or retained, we can turn our attention to developing the communication and information sharing programs that will reward us from conception to consumption. Developing these programs allows us to reduce costs of production throughout the chain and position us to add value to our end product. This value-added product may be as simple as a complete source-verification data base to attacking specific beef markets with a predictable product. Even though the value-added market is the ultimate objective, reality says we have to be successful on the production side first. Calves gaining over 3.3 pounds per day, converting at 5.6 to 6.1 pounds of feed to pound of gain and reaching a 900-pound carcass weight is a power offense to the challenges that are faced in the beef industry. Many calves produced from Gill Red Angus genetics have been reaching these targets. We are excited to be a part of this growing coordinated system. They made the comment that he was the best-looking bull they had ever seen. His daddy was sold to Lloyd Red Angus in North Dakota and is now being used very hard up there and at our ranch on heifers. Run Cloud was used hard for several years on heifers here, and now his daughters are our best cows on the place. They have everything a guy could ask for. Extra long, very thick, with all kinds of muscle in their rear, down their legs and across there back. These two are very athletic. Both of them are also quite stylish, and 4569 should probably be on a halter and head toward Iowa this summer for the National show. They are that good. Their dam is one of the best cows we have ever had. We flushed her a few times before we sold her in our cow sale a few years back. She is where these guys get all their length, muscle and extra depth that they have. We have sold several sons and daughters into purebred herds, and a grandson was used hard here. Their sire, DKK Power Surge 708, was a many-time show champion. He is the one that gave these guys all of their style. His daddy is the great Rambo 502, who sure left his mark in the industry. He is the ultimate female maker. All of his daughters are good. One of his daughters just sold as a 13-year-old cow for $7,000 at the Santa Sale last December. There's hardly any semen left on the bull, but the last I heard sell, brought $500 a straw. So why not take advantage of this great opportunity and get it all in one or two of these super bulls. He has absolutely everything needed to be a big-time bull in the breed. Anyone wanting anything at all needs to check him out. Let's start with his pedigree. He is a son of GMRA Wide Spread 972, the super bull in the Big Red Genetics lineup. That guy does a lot of things right. He has an awesome look with a lot of body, length, and a tremendous amount of growth. Widespread will give you all that, and then some. He has an all-star pedigree with Red Spread, King Rob, BJR Mattie, Excelator, Hobo 1961 and BJR Rambler Every one of them are known for their outstanding maternal traits. Now let's looks at the bottom half of Big Spread's pedigree. There you will find Run Cloud, Presidio and the Roxie cow line. This is the same cow line that you will find on the next two lots. I just cannot say enough about the Run Cloud daughters. Over the past few years they have shined through to the top of our herd. They are outstanding cows with excellent udders, will give you a lot of performance, style and extra length, and will milk like crazy. His TM EPD went up by 10 this year and several last year. He's now sitting on a 46 TM. That is almost unheard of. He is one of the only proven bulls out there with that high of a TM. Our high-selling bull in 2003 was out of a Run Cloud daughter, last year's high-selling bull was out of a Run Cloud daughter, our high-selling bred heifer at the Santa Sale was out of a Run Cloud daughter, the overall high-selling heifer calf at the Santa Sale was out of a Run Cloud daughter. In 2002 we sold our top-selling bull calf ever to Select Sires, and he was out of a Run Cloud daughter. Do you see the pattern? Big Spread will be right up there on that list. Now to top it off his maternal great-grandam had the highest MPPA ever at Gill Red Angus when we sold her. His dam has an average Lot 16 weaning weight ratio of 107 on five calves. This guy struts around knowing that he looks good. Now check out his individual EPDs and weights. His weaning weight is 787 lbs. to ratio 112. His yearling weight is1520 lbs. to ratio 114 ratio. He gained 4.63 lbs. per day, and all of that with only an 87- pound birth weight! That is the highest yearling weight we have ever had. His EPDs are just as impressive, with an 0 to 86 spread from birth to yearling and a TM of 41. He is very long, and has a wide base to him, with a lot of muscle running down into his legs. He has plenty of middle and everything else is just about perfect. Big Spread needs to go to a good home to be a breed impacting sire. Selling 100% possession and one-half semen interest. Gill Red Angus retains one-quarter semen interest, and the other one-quarter gets divided into 10 units at $1,500 each. Each of the 10 units will consist of 50 straws of semen and part ownership in the bull so you will never have to purchase certificates. The new buyer will receive one-half of the syndicate money. (With this program, a $7,500 bull potentially could be free to the new buyer.) No other semen will be released until Or the buyer can double the purchase price and own 100% of the bull. She went to Cedar Top Ranch of Nebraska, and is now in their flush program. They sold 10 embryos to Bill Sexton of Minnesota. We sold a daughter to Forster Red Angus in North Dakota for $5,000, and another daughter to Huffman Red Angus of North Carolina for $3,500. One son sold to Leroy Dubray of South Dakota for $5,000. These two guys fit right in the thick of things and will be on the top end of that list after the gavel hits. They are stylish, long and thick. The sire, LMG Gills Horizon 5379, was our high-selling bull in 2000 to Rock Creek Red Angus and Double Diamond for $6,500. They made the comment that he was the best-looking Red Angus bull they had ever seen. Lots 17 and 18 are just like their daddy long, thick and stylish. You cross these two top cattle lines, and you get a tremendous set of bulls like what we have here. Come and take them home. These guys have an all-star pedigree. Their sire, BJR King of Kings 942, was the high-selling bull at the Midland Bull Test a few years back. He has every popular performance and maternal bull as his ancestors. These two are totally different in style came in the lot a little lighter, but that is only because his recip dam didn t do her job. Don t hold that against him, because as soon as he hit the feedlot he did exactly what he was suppose to do gain right at 4 pounds per day. Now his brother is a power house. He is extremely thickquartered with a wide topline and so much length and middle. Check out his yearling weight. He has the third heaviest yearling weight that we have ever had here. If embryo calves would get ratios, he would be somewhere around a 113 or so. The dam of these two sold in the North Dakota Red Select in 2000 for $4,750 to Lloyd Red Angus, where she went into his ET program. There is a lot of bull here. The dam to both of them was a huge-bodied cow with a great udder. She sold to JD Red Angus in the Gills Girls II sale a few years back, along with some embryos, to Star G Ranch. This is the kind of cow that puts the power into the Red Angus breed. The sires of these two bulls are both well known in the breed. Mr. Beef is in the Genex lineup and was the National Champion. Since then his sons have topped sales all over the country. The other sire, Monu 4X, was used pretty hard here and had two bulls that topped our sales two different years. So we put some in recips this summer and sold the remaining. We sold a high-selling son of hers a few years back, and have two daughters in the herd. And now this brute! He is one of the youngest in the sale, and he is as big as the rest is long, smooth and thick. We sure like him, and I know you will too.
