1 Established 1993 July / August 2013 Newsletter Vol. 29 Issue 4 President s Message This summer s weather has been something out of the movie Groundhog Day humid, wet, humid, wet, humid, wet, but it still beats February! The summer activities are rolling along. The Youth Series has been very well attended with around 400 youngsters at each race. Our monthly Wednesday night runs have also been a huge success with each race drawing more runners than the last. Our runs have not been short on runners but we keep coming up short on volunteers for these events. I don t want to beat a dead horse but this has been a recurring problem. And sadly, burn-out is a real thing and quite a few members who provide a good deal of the work are close to spontaneous combustion. We re not asking for a lifetime commitment, but hey, two hours some Saturday or a couple on Wednesday once a month should not send someone s social calendar into a death spiral. Runner s World Half Marathon, 5K, 10K is offering LVRR members discounted entry fees; check out their flyer in this newsletter. They are having team competition in this year s race, find some buddies and proudly show off your LVRR race singlet. We again do our Couples Race in September, find a partner. Total ages of both parties determine the age groups. Each runner does a 5K which starts and finishes right at the club house. A special shout-out to those who volunteered to keep our clubhouse looking good by cutting the grass: May Jack McCambidge June Astrid Rademacher July Tyler Rindock Aug Mike Seislove Sept Still empty 1 Our next major club race is the infamous South Mountain 10 Miler, 5K. Keep an eye out for entry information coming to an near you. As always, Good Running, Neal LVRR Board of Directors Neal Novak, President Mike Richardson, Vice President Brian Schaffer, Treasurer Nancy Hofmann, Secretary Leslie Billowitch Loretta Dodson Jill Forsythe Chris Garges Carly Patterson Brian Patterson Laurie Reinhart Bob Shively Lloyd Trego

4 Emmaus Scholarship Winner At the July 10th LVRR Summer Series 5K, the 2013 Nicole Reinhart Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Emmaus High School graduate, Lindsey Bray. This scholarship is funded through profits from the Emmaus 4 Miler. This year s 36th annual race was held on Sunday, April 14th and was sold out for the 4th year in a row. Lindsey was a standout cross country and track athlete for the Green Hornets. She was a varsity letter winner for four years in cross country and was the Captain of the EHS girl s team her senior year. She participated in the PIAA State Cross Country Championships three of her four years and was a member of two PIAA state championship teams (2010 & 2011). Individually, she placed 6th at the District XI Cross Country championships in her senior year, which qualified her to run in the 2012 PIAA State Championship meet. Her best time ever in the 5K was a Lindsey also ran for the EHS girls track team. Her main events were the 800 meter run and the mile. She ran best times of 2:24 in the 800 and 5:25 in the mile. Lindsay would have run in the District XI Track Championships had it not been for her additional commitment to the EHS Marine Physical Fitness team, which is also a spring activity. She was a member of the fitness team for four years. Each year that she competed, the team won the Girls National Marine Fitness Championship. In her senior year, Lindsey was the 2nd overall female in the competition. The event is held each May in San Diego, CA. For those who may not have known, Nicole Reinhart was also a member of the EHS Marine Physical Fitness team, and was the only 3-time individual National Champion in the history of the competition. Next year, Lindsey will be attending Liberty University, in Lynchburg, VA, as an undecided major. She does plan on running for the varsity cross country and track teams while attending Liberty U. LVRR Scholarship Winners The club s 2013 college scholarship awards were given out at the club s July 10 th Summer Series race. Four scholarships were awarded of $4000 each to two female and two male graduating high school runners from Lehigh and Northampton counties for a total of $16,000 in awards. 4 The scholarship fund was established to assist local high school student graduates with college expenses and is funded by LVRR races. The fund is a way for the club to give back to the community, foster interest in the sport and demonstrate the club s commitment to youth running. By supporting young people who have demonstrated academic and athletic excellence, community involvement, and a strong interest in running, we are encouraging healthy, productive and disciplined lifestyles in these young adults who will be leaders of the future. The criteria the applicant must meet is as follows: a minimum 2.5 grade point average (provided by their school guidance counselor), a listing of their running and volunteer achievements, a 250 word essay on how running has influenced their life and what the sport has meant personally to them, and two letters of recommendation must be submitted, one from their high school cross country and/or track coach and the other from someone not related to them, such as a teacher, counselor, etc. Of course they must be members of their high school cross country and/or track team and compete as an individual in running events. Applications are sent to all high schools in Lehigh and Northampton counties. She started with a small group of local runners and walkers as mentors and had 150 beginners show up! There are now several programs throughout the Lehigh Valley helping women get fit and healthier lives. Part of the Lehigh Valley Road Runners, First Strides is a 12-week training program for women who want to train for a 5k (3.1 mile) run or walk. It is a proven program to help women safely start a fitness program. Why is it important that there is a First Strides program? According to the BLS 2012 American Time Use Survey, women are less likely than men to participate in sports, exercise, or recreation on any given day. Additionally, women tend to spend less time overall on exercise or sports than men do. ( gov/tus/) What makes First Strides so effective? There is a great deal of research that highlights that working out with a partner or in groups is generally more successful than trying to go alone. A group program, especially a structured one, can provide support and a
8 sense of a common goal. It is also important to find a group that is similar in age, gender, exercise experience, and desire to exercise. This helps you stay connected to your group and your goals, as well as helps build confidence. The First Strides workout program is a gradual, progressive, self-paced, time-based workout program that accommodates a wide range of abilities. It is only for women, of all ages and abilities. You are eventually grouped into small, more personal groups with similar abilities. Whether you are interested in starting an exercise program, want to improve your pace or endurance, or want to meet a great bunch of women to work out with, First Strides is for you. First Strides starts up again in July. To find a program near you, please visit the First Strides website ( firststrides.com/). The Ironman World Championship by Kenrick Smith I step down - my feet hit the cool sand as the warm Hawaiian waters reach the tips of my toes. I look across the water at the thousands of spectators lining the seawalls in anticipation for the start of the race. I hear the wind wrestling with the palm leaves and see the waves crashing in front of me and all I can think is that this will all be over in miles. That s it. All I have to do is swim, bike, and run for miles. I enter the water heading away from the shores of Kona, Hawaii to the start line of the 2012 Ironman World Championships to await the cannon s BOOM signaling the start of the race. As I look around at all the pink and blue swim caps that surround me I wonder - do I have what it takes to take on this race, have I put all the miles in to be able to compete with the best of the best? I tell myself - Yes!! Then, the peaceful moment sets in. I love this part of the race where all the background noise is shut out and all I hear are my inner most thoughts as I prep for the GO!! I qualified for Ironman World Championships at Ironman Lake Placid, finishing 5 th in my age group and 21 st overall. Ironman Lake Placid was my first full Ironman and was also my first marathon. I have been racing triathlons now for two years and was fortunate enough to be able to compete on triathlon s biggest stage this past October. I was extremely humbled to be able to race with the best athletes from around the world. To be considered one of them 8 was truly an honor. I took in as much as I possibly could without feeling overwhelmed and getting lost within the spectacle of what is Kona. I was able to share this journey of a lifetime with 16 members of my family, who cheered me on all day as I competed against the rough surf, the brutal winds, the scorching heat, my body, and my mind. Every time I would see a smiling face of my family it would give me that little boost to keep pushing through the pain. I learned a lot about myself throughout the race. At certain points it became very tough but I kept moving forward. I kept putting one foot in front of the other and realized there was nowhere else I would rather be. This was a true test for me and an experience of a lifetime. The day was a success - I finished the race with a time of 9:55:52 only ten seconds off of my Ironman Lake Placid time. I took many mental notes at Kona so that, if I am fortunate enough to go back, I will have knowledge and experience on my side. Even though there are tough moments in a triathlon, I feel at home on a tri course, like it is where I belong, my purpose, my home. My ultimate dream is to one day race triathlon professionally. Athletics and healthy living is something that I, and I know members of LVRR, have a strong passion
9 for. We are incredible beings and are capable of great things if we can just let loose and take chances. Whether you choose this lifestyle to stay in shape, for social camaraderie, or the competition, whatever it is, make the most of it and enjoy it. I challenge you to set your goals high in whatever you are passionate about and go after them with a tenacity and drive that will allow you to achieve them. If we want something bad enough, we can get it. If you hit a roadblock don t be deterred. Look at the situation from a different angle and then proceed. A roadblock is not a failure but just a sign that you need to divert your path and choose another way but persevere and you will get there. I am still climbing to get to my ultimate goal and encourage all of you out there to find your Kona and go Capture It! See you on the course! New Twist on an Old Favorite by Chris Garges Who doesn t love applesauce? I remember helping my grandmother make it when I was a kid, now we make it with our kids. Now it s even packaged in to-go containers and comes in handy on road trips, hikes and picnics. I must admit, I had considered taking a few of them from the kid s stash to quench that pre/post workout hunger I get sometimes. Then I came to find out that PowerBar beat me to the punch! They sent me some samples of a new product they just launched called Performance Energy Blends. I received two different flavors (turns out they currently only make two flavors)-- Banana Blueberry and Apple Strawberrry Mango. They re packaged in what look like oversize gel containers with closable lids. Funny thing is, when I opened the box my kids started reaching for some, thinking I had gotten them for them! I caved in and we all had to sample them, I think the Banana Blueberry was the winner of the taste test and it s the flavor I seem to reach for first. I think the best way to describe them is a cross between applesauce and a fruit smoothie. So what s in them and what are they for? It s basically real fruit and PowerBar s 2:1 blend of glucose/fructose which they call C2 Max. They are gluten free and contain no artificial flavors or colors, no caffeine and no added electrolytes. Each pouch is 80 calories with 21 grams of carbohydrates. I typically 9 run first thing in the morning so I ve found them useful to get something in my stomach to fuel my run. They can be consumed during the run, but I won t replace my normal gel with the blends because of the lack of electrolytes. For longer training runs or races, you could use them to supplement the gels and break up the gel taste which could build up. I also like them slightly chilled as that gives them more of a smoothie taste and texture. I volunteered at the PowerBar booth at the Boston Marathon expo handing the Energy Blends out and they were so popular that we could not keep them in stock! They are hitting the retail market now and are also available at com.
