1 Established 1993 May/June 2014 Newsletter Vol. 30 Issue 3 President s Message The last two months have been over the top busy for dozens of club members. Emmaus 4 Miler went off extremely, check out the article by Mike Richardson. The St. Luke s Half & 5K swiftly followed with another great year due solely to a wonderful race committee that began its work in August Yes, it takes eight months of planning to bring off a race of that size and the committee did a masterful job. No sooner was the last finisher in for the Half than the gun went off for the 1 st Summer Series. Nearly two hundred runners towed the start line, a harbinger of Summer Series to come, again a free event sponsored by your club. Keep in mind the mantra for the covered dish at the Summer Series, A bag of chips or a box of cookies does not constitute a covered dish but a case of beer does. The last newsletter called for people to join a Party Committee to begin planning for our twentieth year as residents of the place we call home. I don t think two weeks went past until a committee was formed, plans were set, a date was agreed upon and registration was open on Raceit. Space is limited and it is on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you have any inkling of attending, please register. A flyer is in this newsletter. The club is charging a small fee to insure that a real commitment is made when reserving a spot. The club s Youth Series is off and running and ever in need of volunteers. Come out and help at a wonderful event. A woman stopped me at the Half and said her daughter started running the series at 3 years old and is now a high school X-County runner. Not the only one, I am sure. It is election year and a ballot is enclosed. According to club by-laws, an independent committee consisting of Scott 1 Fowler, Elaine McCambridge and Gary Ward reviews all applicants requests to be on the board.this year we had more than we ever had for an election since the inception of the club. As always, Good Running, Neal Photos from the Emmaus 4-Miler.

3 Bandits at St Luke s Dear Mr. Novak, First of all, thank you for putting on another fun race! I ran in the St. Luke s Half-Marathon and 5K race the past four years. The only problem I have is these BANDIT RUNNERS. I use my hard-earned money to enter a race and along come these FREE LOADERS. One lady ran in our group, all of whom paid except for her. She ran the race without a bib number, finished and had the nerve to take a medal. She ate the food afterwards, even stuffed her pockets with extra food. (This is why there isn t enough food for all the Half-Marathon runners!!!) When we went to leave, she even went down to the tent and got a FREE SHIRT. If all the runners ran in races without paying, NO organization would benefit. This is the second year in a row that I know LVRR Board of Directors Neal Novak, President Mike Richardson, Vice President Brian Schaffer, Treasurer Nancy Hofmann, Secretary Leslie Billowitch Loretta Dodson Jill Forsythe Chris Garges Carly Patterson Brian Patterson Laurie Reinhart Bob Shively Lloyd Trego 3
4 personally of someone doing this. CAN T THIS BE STOPPED??? NOT A FREE LOADER, A PAID RUNNER I received this letter shortly after the St. Luke s Half and I have the same problem that the gentleman who wrote the letter does. When people Bandit a race, it is a theft of service, but even greater than that, they put themselves and the organization putting on the race in great jeopardy. They have not signed a waiver; should something happen, who is responsible...the municipality, the running club? I know this for certain, anyone who has ever volunteered at a race or been a part of a race committee or directed a race would never even think of being a Bandit, simply knowing how much work goes into each and every event Emmaus 4-Miler The 37th annual Emmaus 4 Miler was held on April 6th. The race starts and finishes at Emmaus High School and helps to fund the Ed Thompson Memorial Scholarship and the Nicole Reinhart Memorial Scholarship. Both awards are for $2000, and are given yearly to the top male and female cross country and track athletes graduating from Emmaus H.S. This year s overall winners were Matt Gillette, a Parkland H.S.graduate, and Kami Reinhard of Emmaus. Matt s time was a 20:18 and Kami finished in 24:26. Each overall winner took home a custom-made 15oz. coffee mug and $100. Each of the 26 age-group winners was also awarded a mug plus a gift certificate to a local establishment. April s race had a total of 319 finishers in the four-mile race and 42 participants in the one-mile fun run. Over 45 local company sponsors provided great post-race refreshments, cash donations and numerous gift certificates. Some of the gift certificates were awarded as random prizes preceding the actual award ceremony. This year s race was a sell-out for the fourth consecutive year. Next year s race will open registration around Christmas 2014 and the race date is tentatively set for Sunday,April 12, Check our LVRR website for more information. Be Better! Treasurer s Report was presented and accepted. Super Bowl race was successful. Income is arriving from the Half Marathon. OLD BUSINESS 1. LVRR does not cover insurance for the Hanover Township First Strides program. Possibly Hanover Township could do that for the program. 2. Brenda Frezeman will publish a newsletter for LVRR. It will be mailed to members. 3. The membership meeting will be held Thursday March 19 th at the Brass Rail with David Willey speaking. The Board will meet prior to the 6:30 general meeting. (NOTE: Subsequent investigation determined that paying for members to eat at the Brass Rail or the BrewWorks would be an extravagance for the club. A motion was made and passed via Board to hold the general meeting at the clubhouse in September with the club providing pizza and beverages.). 4. The By-laws still need to be updated. Board will contact Mike Prokup for advice on wording. 5. LVRR brochure is also in need of updating. Brian Patterson is working on that. 6. Oil has been purchased to fill the tanks. 7. New keys will be distributed at the next meeting. NEW BUSINESS 1. Membership currently stands at 296 households representing 12
