4 4 Home of the Racers Marshall Gage Track Without question, Murray State s track facilities are some of the finest in the nation, and the most outstanding in the region. The centerpiece of the track and field facilities is the nine-lane-state-of-the-art running surface. Originally built in 1973 as part of the Roy Stewart Stadium construction project, the track was initially surfaced with a Rekortan running surface used in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Recently the surface was replaced again giving the Racers a brand new track to practice and compete on. MSU alum Marshall Gage was the primary donor and fundraiser for the first resurfacing project and continues to be a great supporter of the program. So much in fact, the track was named in his honor in Gage ran for the Racers from as a sprinter and hurdler. Gage was the only runner in the 1959 Ohio Valley Conference championships to win three events, placing first in the 100-yard dash, 120-yard high hurdles and 220-yard low hurdles. He was inducted to the MSU Hall of Fame in 1965 and was also a 1995 Golden Horseshoe Award recipient. In addition to the nine-lane track, the MSU track and field facilities include spacious, modern locker rooms for men and women, and a wellequipped weight room and training room. Located inside the stadium are: two long jump pits, a high jump area, a pole vault pit and a shot put area. Discus, javelin and hammer throw facilities are situated just outside the stadium. Roy Stewart Stadium Considered to be one of the finest facilities in the nation, picturesque Roy Stewart Stadium has provided MSU with a spacious, welltended and modern facility since it opened in The seven-floor structure provides optimum seating for 16,800 fans. It serves as the centerpiece to Murray State s centralized athletic facility along with the Regional Special Events Center for MSU basketball and the baseball team s Reagan Field. The stadium, not only has a new track, but also in the summer of 2007 a new field turf surface was installed. The first level of the stadium houses spacious offices and meeting rooms for football and track and field. It also includes the Tom Doc Simmons Training Room and one of the finest weight rooms in America, along with expansive dressing rooms for football, track, and baseball. The Stadium, which is named for one of MSU s greatest coaches and administrators, is still one of the finest athletics faciltities in the region and a continued testament to the MSU spirit of those who had the vision to build it. Additionally, Chavis coached Sariyu Shittu who ranked 3rd and 4th on the women s list in the 200 and 400; and Craig Brown, who ranked 4th in the 60 and indoor 200-meter dashes. 28 28 Weaver Center Backing up its commitment to ensure that Racer student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the athletic fields, Murray State athletics established a state-of-the-art academic center. Named in honor of longtime supporters Jan and Dick Weaver, who provided funding for the building of the center, the Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at Roy Stewart Stadium June 30, 1997, and immediately began to pay dividends in the MSU athletics program. Today, the Weaver Center is a spacious facility equipped with individual and group study areas, but the centerpiece of the Weaver Center is its computer lab. In the past two years the lab has been outfitted with all new desktop computers. Student-athletes can use the computers to access the internet for research and to complete class projects and papers. MSU student-athletes also use the Weaver Center for study hall, which meets throughout the day. During study hall, student-athletes have access to tutors, study groups and computers. The center continues to play a key role in the academic success of MSU student-athletes. For the academic year 152 studentathletes had a 3.5 or higher grade point average and 37 had perfect 4.0 GPA s. The center is open 12 hours a day, six days a week during the school year, with an abbreviated schedule during the summer and holidays. Murray State University

29 Director of Athletics 29 Allen Ward Allen Ward joined the Murray State athletics department as its director on March 30, Since his arrival, there has been a prevailing theme that symbolizes his administration: steady and significant progress. It s an honor to serve as Director of Athletics at Murray State. said Ward. I m very pleased with the direction of the program and confident it s positioned for long-term success. The most recent illustration of Ward s stamp on the program was Murray State s capturing of the OVC Commissioners Cup, a symbol of overall athletic excellence in OVC sponsored championships. The OVC Commissioners Cup signifies excellence throughout the entire program, said Ward. It s a good barometer in measuring the overall success of any athletic department and it s exactly what I envisioned when I came to Murray State. It s the first time since 1991 that MSU won the all-sports trophy, now known as the OVC Commissioners Cup. Ten of Murray s fifteen sports finished third place or higher, with three sports winning league championships. Ward also emphasizes the importance of achievement in the classroom as well. Our motto is Four Years Two Goals. We want every student-athlete to leave Murray State with a degree in one hand and a championship ring on the other, states Ward unrelentingly. I fully expect our student-athletes to take advantage of their opportunity to receive a quality education while competing at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics. of the general student body. Ward makes no secret where he intends to take the program. I expect to be a leader in the OVC in everything we do. I expect to win championships and advance to compete on the national stage. I intend to continue to move the program forward, states Ward. And Murray moving forward is exactly what has been happening. Over $3.5 million in athletic facility enhancements have been made touching every sport and unit. The department successfully completed its 10- year NCAA Recertification process. The overall APR scores for the department now surpass 960, and the cumulative GPA for studentathletes for the spring, 2009 semester was Under Ward s leadership, the Racer Club was established as the annual fund raising arm of the department and continues to thrive, the sport of softball was introduced to the varsity lineup, additional staff was added in areas vital to student-athlete achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed and enacted, the Racer Television Network was unveiled, and the athletic program became an official NCAA CHAMPS / Life Skills member. Ward has also had to successfully manage unprecedented turnover with head coaching positions and senior level staff, most notably with its high profile positions. New coaches have been hired for men s basketball, women s basketball, football, women s soccer, softball, rifle, and strength and conditioning. I like our coaches and staff; it s a really good group, and they work extremely hard, noted Ward. They know what it takes to win championships, but also teach the importance of achieving academically as well. It s very clear Ward has a passion and devotion for student-athletes and college athletics. Their success, and providing the tools necessary to perform at the highest level, is my top priority, says Ward. We re a proud program with a rich tradition that s fortunate to have extraordinary university leadership. We will continue to win championships while, at the same time, prepare our athletes to excel long after they have played their last game for Murray State. Ward, 42, came to Murray State from the University of North Texas, where he served in numerous capacities over 14 years for the Division I BCS program, including the last six years as Senior Associate Athletics Director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, Ward is a 1989 graduate of William Jewell College and earned his master s degree from Wichita State University. Ward and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan, 11, and Nicole, 8. Each of the past four years, the graduation rates for student-athletes have surpassed that The Ward family: Allen, Nathan, Nicole and Sharon Track & Field

34 34 Ohio Valley Conference Entering its 62nd year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. For only the second time in a decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league s 11th member in The move expanded the OVC s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in The school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh fulltime Commissioner in league history on July 28. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid- American Conferences. The OVC s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb , 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black midsouthern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African- Americans. The playing field is not the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic Achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conference-sponsored sport. Since the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-America program began, the Ohio Valley Conference has had 179 student-athletes honored with the award, including 25 over the last three years ( to the present). Through the early years of the league, administrators wrestled with fan behavior due to the close proximity of the Conference members and the intense rivalries which developed. Just as it did decades ago, the OVC took the leadership role on what has become a national issue. In 1995, the OVC implemented a first-of-its-kind Sportsmanship Statement, a policy which promotes principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for one s opponent. The statement has become a model for others to follow across the nation, and has answered the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men s and women s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. 36 Cross Country in Review The 2009 Women s Cross Country team made big strides during the seven-meet season and with only three seniors in the mix, the Racers gained valuable experience that will play a major role in the squad s success in MSU was led by senior Taylor Crawford, who recorded MSU s top finish in four of the races this season. Joining the speedy senior was Katelyn Jones who was the top Racers finisher in the other three meets. Strong performances were often given by junior Asenath Na Aman and sophmores Kayla Crusham and Karissa Magnuson throughout the year. MSU opened the season at the Belmont Opener where they finished seventh in the nine team meet. Jones was the top MSU finisher that morning as she turned in a 15th place finish on the 4k course. Just behind Jones was Crawford who finished 30th with a time of 15:26. Na Aman finished third for the Racers and 36th overall. Magnuson and Kristen Reffett crossed the finish line 47th and 54th, respectively. Despite a disappointing finish at the Belmont Opener, MSU now had something to grow on. The Racers followed up their disappointing seventh place finish at the Belmont Opener by finishing third out of 18 schools competing at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt University. Crawford crossed the line in 18:46 to finish fifth overall, while Jones finished 11th with a time of 19:13. Na Aman and Magnuson finished just behind Jones in 19th and 23rd place, respectivley. Crusham rounded out the scoring for the Racers as she finished 48th. In the Racers next meet, the squad tallied their second consecutive third place finish with this one coming at the Saluki Invitational. Jones and Crawford turned in top-10 finishes as they finished fifth and 10th, respectively. The Racers squad continued to improve as they finished 2nd at the Tennessee Tech Invite in the seven team meet. Crawford, Jones and Na Aman each finished in the top-five to help lead MSU to their best finish of the season so far. MSU clinched their first team title of the season at the Evansville Invitational in their final meet before the OVC Championships. Once again, Crawford, Jones and Na Aman led the way as they turned in top-10 finishes. The Racers had one date marked on their calanders this year, that date was Oct. 31 for the OVC Championships. MSU ran on a wet and muddy course and fell just short of the team title as they finished second. Crawford was the top Racers preformer as she finished second and earned All-OVC First Team honors. Jones finished fifth and earned All-OVC First Team honors as well. Crusham finished 14th in the 5k race and was named to the All- OVC Second Team.
