2 Olympic 2012 Past HH Member Involved with the London Olympics David Sugden s Story What s your connection to HHAC? I was a member of the club during my school days (circa ), making up the selfproclaimed dream team including Buckingham, Pierson, Dewhirst among others. What is your role in London 2012? My law firm, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, is one of the London 2012 sponsors and as part of a secondment programme provides lawyers, including me, to help head up the organising committee (LOCOG) legal team. Describe London 2012 in three words. Greatest Games Ever. What are you working on at the moment? Several very, very last minute contracts for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. What has been the highlight of your time so far? Spending months negotiations and re-negotiations of the contracts required to produce 12,000 Olympic and Paralympic Torches. Then being asked to join the Torch Relay convoy for three days (as it passed through Yorkshire!) and witnessing the quite phenomenal scenes of public support for the inspirational Torchbearers and the Games. What have you learnt in your time there? Contracts are often misunderstood by those who enter into them. Seb Coe is also a lot shorter than he looks on TV. What s the most unusual thing you've been asked to do? Negotiate a deal for 200,000 condoms for the Athletes' Village. Which Olympic event would you like to compete in and why? Any middle-distance track event, emulating the British (and HHAC) greats. What are you looking forward to most about London 2012? Seeing years of hard work come to fruition as the UK, following up the Jubilee celebrations, shows the World how to put on the biggest event on earth. Describe a perfect day off in London. 08:32am KingsX train to Yorkshire (direct no stops). Tell us something we didn t know about the Olympics. For the first time ever, all 193 UN member states have signed up to the traditional truce called for the London 2012 Games. Did you get any tickets in the ballot? 4 tickets to the beach volleyball quarter-finals, suddenly I have friends. What non-olympic sport would you like to see added? Tug of war (formerly an Olympic sport, 1900 to 1920). Seb Coe or Steve Redgrave? Boris Johnson in every context. June

6 Team Spirit Paarlauf Finals The final of the 2012 Paarlaufs was a very keenly contested affair with eleven pairs taking to the start line. With a large number of the club having finishing training early to support the runners the final was a very exciting and noisy affair. The race started with all teams jockeying for position with the lead changing hands numerous times in the first few minutes with the pairs of Edward Saxton & Sunnivah Waterman and Adrian Smith & Janie Fitton being very much to the front. As the race settled down however it was the pairings of Lewis Byram & Amy Tyler and Ben Dickinson & Alex Harrower who moved ahead. The lead changed hands for several before Lewis & Amy started to forge ahead with the only hope for others was that Amy would tire. She however kept going running as strong in the last minute as the first to ensure victory for her and Lewis. Ben & Alex held onto 2nd place from the fast closing Katie Walshaw & Ben Ramsden, they were despondent at the end when they thought that Max Kaye & Kate Skidmore had overtaken them in the final second as they hadn't realised they were a lap down despite Max making up almost a lap in the last minute. This has been the most successful Paarlaufs ever and all 132 athletes who started out should be proud of the effort they put in during this 10 minute gruelling relay and the 11 final pairs should be congratulated for producing an excellent final. A big thanks to all the marshals and counters, the course organiser Roger and to the person who produced the 66 pairings! June
7 FELL Great Lakes Fell Race, English Championship counter Saturday 16th June The great and the good of the English Fell Running fraternity gathered in the Western Lake District on Saturday in dreadful conditions to contest the third race in the 2012 Championship series. Many entrants chose, perhaps wisely, to stay at home as the rain had been falling for days and was set to continue for Saturday along with low lying cloud. A few hardy Holmfirth Harriers who needed to collect crucial points for the English Championship and the Harriers Fell Championship, made the journey to the Langdale valley. The Great Lakes race is categorised as a long race (greater than 12 miles) and whilst only 13 miles it has more climbing (6988 feet) than any other long race in the calendar. Starting in Great Langdale the route is packed with variety and includes much ground new to fell racing. After a fast ascent of The Band to Bowfell, the route makes a high-level summit-hopping circuit of Upper Eskdale, including the two highest peaks in the Lakes; Scafell Pike and Scafell. The somewhat lonely homeward leg returns from Slight Side to Pike of Blisco. Just over 300 runners set off in the rain and mist, but the conditions were such that almost 10% of the field chose to drop out. The rocky terrain proved very slippery and some ascents seemed more like waterfalls than paths. The swollen river crossings proved somewhat exciting and it was definitely a case of team work to get across them safely. Holmfirth s Veteran Andy Hauser, who is challenging the English Vet 55 category this year, was struggling over the wet, slippery rocks in the early part of the race and was one of many who retired at Esk. Meanwhile Tom Brunt was having an excellent run, up with the leaders and in the top 10, until the descents from both Great End and Slight Side proved tricky in the mist and cost him about 15 places. Despite this frustrating set-back, he finished 24 th amongst a very strong field, in a time of 3:14:52. The story was much the same for other athletes including Helen Berry, currently lying second in the English Championship series. Helen was in third place and running well until the run back towards Pike of Blisco which was shrouded in mist, catching many athletes out. Eventually back on track, Helen finished a credible 4 th place (77 th overall) in 3:53:17, retaining second place in the series. Dave Knight was the only other Holmfirth representative in the race, collecting valuable points towards his club Championship competition. Dave finished 204 th in a time of 5:27:22. The race was won by local athlete Ben Abdelnoor of Ambleside AC in 2:48:45. The ladies race was won by reigning English Champion, Lauren Jeska of Todmorden, in a new record time of 3:28:28. Despite cut off times being imposed by the race organiser at certain check points in the first half of the race, the second part was clearly tricky for all, with the last athlete crossing the line in 7:57:16. June
8 FELL Another busy month has come and gone, with plenty of racing for seniors and juniors alike and once again, we have had some great success. First up on 3rd June was the Wadsworth Jubilee race above Hebden Bridge, a new race hosted by Todmorden Harriers as part of the village s jubilee celebrations. Sadly, the June weather was most unseasonal and numbers were down for both juniors and seniors, which meant lots of burgers all round! 6 seniors and 4 juniors braved the wind and rain, with Callum Durrans and George Hobbs 1st and 2nd U10, Harry Hobbs 2nd U12 and Genevieve Durrans 1st GU14, whilst for the seniors, Alistair Rees was 2nd overall, Jim Durrans was 4th overall and with Phil Hobbs 14th overall, Holmfirth were 2nd team behind Calder Valley. Dave Knight, Rob Halstead and Rebecca Halstead made up the Holmfirth contingent, picking up some valuable championship points. After a weekend off for some, it was then the next round in the senior English Championships the aptly named Great Lakes race from Langdale on Saturday 16th June, taking in Bowfell, Scafell Pike and Scafell amongst others on its 13 mile, 7000 feet loop! The weather in the build-up to the race had been atrocious and nothing changed on the day of the race itself. Those who braved the trip had to contend with poor visibility, driving rain and swollen rivers and many of the 470 who had pre-entered decided to stay closer to home! Just 3 hardy Harriers completed the challenge Tom Brunt had been well placed at the early checkpoints, but a couple of uncharacteristic navigation errors saw him drop to 24th overall. Helen Berry is mounting another serious challenge in the Ladies Championship and despite nearly floating down river to Eskdale at one point, finished an excellent 77th overall and 4th lady. Andy Hauser decided to retire from the race after the Esk Pike checkpoint, so it was left to Dave Knight to complete the Holmfirth contingent in the hardest race he s ever done (his words), 204th from 273 finishers (301 started). Saturday 23rd saw the juniors in action at the Clougha Pike races near Lancaster again, an English Junior Championship meeting. 17 juniors were in action, the pick of the results being Callum Durrans, 1st U10, Seth Waterman 3rd U14, Lucy Byram 1st GU14 and Lewis Byram 2nd U16. These great results moved us up to 2nd overall in the Junior Championships. Katie Walshaw also had a run out in the senior race as warm-up for her forthcoming International races and destroyed the ladies field, breaking the course record into the bargain! As a result of her excellent 3rd place at the UK European Championship Trial race at Sedbergh on 2nd June, Katie Walshaw has been selected to run for GB at the forthcoming European Championships at Denizli in Turkey on 7th July. A fantastic achievement and good luck to her!! Finally, other results: UK European Championship Trial (02/06/12) Katie Walshaw, 3rd lady; Ilkley Trail Race (04/06/12) Tim Cock, 124th overall and 2nd V70, Daisy Mae Smith, 3rd GU14 and Eddie Hinchliffe, 3rd U18; Otley Chevin (06/06/12) Andy Hauser, 12th overall and 1st V55 and Lucy Needham, 23rd overall and 2nd lady; Abbey Anniversary (07/06/12) Lucy Needham, 11th overall and 1st lady; Duddon (09/06/12) Tom Brunt, 3rd overall; Knowl Hill (10/06/12) Jacqui Khoueiry, 57th overall and 3rd lady and 1st lady overall in Rochdale Harriers 3 Day Event; Tebay (13/06/12) Bill Stewart, 5th overall; Buckden Pike (16/06/12) Lucy Needham, 27th overall and 1st lady; Great Lakes (16/06/12) Helen Berry, 77th overall and 4th lady; Edale (17/06/12) Alistair Rees, 9th overall and 2nd V40; Clougha Pike (23/06/12) Katie Walshaw, 19th overall and 1st lady; Kinder Trog (24/06/12) Tom Brunt, 3rd overall; Cragg Vale (27/06/12) George Hobbs, 2nd U10 and Harry Hobbs, 3rd U12; Eldwick Gala (30/06/12) Lucy Needham, 29th overall and 3rd lady. Phil reported Drizzling rain gave way to glorious sun as the runners followed an undulating course which involved crossing the Humber Bridge into Barton for a further loop under the bridge and back up a long slow hill onto the bridge again. The last two miles were a glorious gradual rise to the middle of the bridge, there is nearly a mile span between the towers, and then a fast dash down to the bridge north bank car park and the finish. A great run. Personally I ran well and comfortably achieved my aim of sub 2hour finish. My pace was around the 8.45 minute a mile mark. Phil achieved his target and completed the half marathon in 1:55:16; Christopher Williamson s time was 1:50:40. Results: June

This year the event was held in Queen Ethelberga School grounds Bike checks taking place on the helicopter landing pad! Well done! BRITISH LONG DISTANCE SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS 24 th June Andrew & Shea Kerry competed in the British Long Distance Swimming Championships (representing Holmfirth Harriers) at Wykeham Lakes in Scarborough. What was different about this event is that ALL swimmers must comply with a NO wetsuit policy. Suffice to say IT WAS COLD. Andrew had a bit of cold feet (in more senses than one) before his 2 mile event and considered competing in the 1km novice event instead (citing a sore shoulder) He managed to finish the 2miles even if he was unable to lift his right arm out of the water, to finish in 1 st place (okay he was the only MV40 taking part) Shea was the braver of the two as he has considerably less body fat and joined the other juniors who were also taking part. Two of the young boys gave up in the 1km and had to be rescued, but Shea managed to tough it out coming in 3 rd place. BOTH even though were cold found it a strangely addictive pursuit and are looking forward to next years event! June
