Offers of help are slowly coming in but I still need the following. At least 2 more people to help with marshalling. 2 Newsletter February Noon Stone 26th February 2011 Often held in atrocious conditions on the Pennine moors above Todmorden, the category AM Noon Stone fell race had the potential to be a tricky first counter in this year s Holmfirth Harriers Fell Championship. As it was, the weather relented for the most part, so navigation wasn t too much of an issue and the competitors just had to contend with plenty of mud and peat clawing at their shoes for much of the 9 mile course. Last year s race was an English championship event, attracting over 400 entries some of them must have enjoyed the occasion, because there were still nearly 250 runners this time around, including 11 Harriers eager to put down a marker and grab some points. First back for Holmfirth, finishing 30 th overall and 1st lady was Ladies Captain Helen Berry, in a time of Helen was comfortably ahead of her nearest rival, Helen Skelton from Mercia, who was some four minutes down in Next back for Holmfirth (and complaining his legs weren t long enough for the peat bogs) was Chris Beadle, finishing 95 th overall in , just pipping Phil Hobbs, who came back in , finishing 109 th. Holmfirth runners packed the middle order, with Jason Kaushal, Ian Arnold, Dave Knight & Richard Wade all finishing under the 1 hour 50 mark. There was then a bit of a gap to ever-green Rob Halstead who finished in and two of our fellrunning V60 stalwarts, Bill Hunter ( ) and Jim Sommerville ( ). Our final runner was Rebecca Halstead, who is slowly but steadily coming back from injury and completed the course in As most of us hadn t done the race before, the general consensus was that it had been a tough but good choice. This was no doubt helped by the fact that the race HQ is located in the Top Brink Inn at Lumbutts, in the shadow of Stoodley Pike monument and where post-race food consisted of very generous and reasonably priced chip butties! 3 Newsletter February FELL Ilkley Moor Junior Fell Races 27th February 2011 For those brave souls who had contested the National XC championships at Alton Towers the previous weekend, one look at the starting field for this year s Ilkley Moor races must have brought back bad memories of mud, mud & more mud! Heavy rain over the previous weeks, combined with heavy machinery being used for moorland restoration, had rendered the hillside a boggy mess. Undeterred and with a few half-term absentees, Holmfirth were still able to field 19 juniors throughout all the age groups and we once again had a number of top 3 finishers. The course has something for everyone stream crossings, muddy banks, heather, bracken, tussocks and a steep downhill finish with a little sting in the tail! For the U8 s, Lewis Hodgson had a good run, finishing 7 th overall from 37 starters and was once again joined by Freya & Ben Durrans who enjoyed racing a new course and managed to keep their shoes on, unlike a few others! The U10 s, U12 s, U14 s & U16 s set off together a great sight as 124 runners tried to find the best line through the mud. Once across the stream and up the first muddy bank, there were plenty of Holmfirth vests to be seen. Lewis Byram led the field virtually from start to finish and won comfortably, breaking the U14 record by 13 seconds in a time of Close behind, putting in another great performance finishing 4 th overall (and 4 th U14) came Eddie Hinchliffe in Remarkably, in a combined age-group race, Lucy & Erica Byram finished 7 th equal 1 st GU12 s and smashed that record by 27 seconds in a time of 7.55 must be something in the Marsden water! Left GU12s this year for young Fiona Hodgson running well. A little further back, Lewis Bartholomew finished 13th overall, 4 th U12 in 8.13 and was followed shortly after by Finn Kerry, who ran strongly to finish in nd overall & 2 nd U10. Sophie Spencer was our sole representative in the GU14 s, but still ran well to finish in 8.53, 29 th overall & 4 th GU14. Callum Durrans (Left)continues to show what a good athlete he is becoming by finishing 32 nd overall, 4 th U10, in a time of 8.56 and this in walking boots, because his trainers had no grip! In the U16 & U18 2 mile challenge, Robert Hinchliffe ran very well, finishing 7 th overall & 4 th U16 in a time of All in all, another super effort from all the juniors in testing conditions underfoot and it was great to see so many smiling faces at the end, particularly when the spot prizes of additional goody bags or Cadbury s Creme Eggs were awarded by club and Holmfirth was called out second! The next race on the junior calendar is Pendle on Saturday 2 nd April, which this year is both an English and Lancashire Junior Championship event. There will be plenty of competition and last year, the prizes were Easter eggs, so it ll be well worth a visit again!

4 Newsletter February CROSS COUNTRY ECCA National Cross Country Championships Alton Towers, Staffordshire Saturday 19 February 2011 Dedicated Holmfirth Harriers athletes and supporters travel down to Alton Towers in Staffordshire for the English National Cross Country Championships. Whilst the snow had arrived in Huddersfield overnight, the midlands had experienced heavy rain which meant the course and surrounding area soon became a quagmire after the early races. Athletes commented that they had never run in such muddy conditions, which proved tiring over the undulating course. Over halfway into the race timetable the race organisers took the decision to alter the course for the U15 girls, U13 boys and Senior Women and Men, due to injuries that were sustained in earlier races. There was a delay in the start of all these races but by the time the men's race got off the marks they were back on track. The planned course for the senior ladies was reduced from two large laps of 4km each to 3 small laps, a distance of approximately 6km, omitting the lower part of the course which had included a very steep hill; welcome news for some athletes but not for others. The senior ladies fielded four runners which was enough to complete a team position. With some of the regular team counters absent due to half-term holidays, Cara Penfold stepped up to the mark to complete the team. Katie Walshaw relished the muddy conditions and gradually moved through the field throughout the race to finish in an excellent 33rd place (26:31), an improvement of about 20 places on her position last year. Ladies' Captain, Helen Berry, found the mud tough going towards the end of the race, but did well to finish in 62nd place (27:35). Claire Leaver may not have appeared to enjoy the conditions, though finished in 157 th place in a time of 30:15. Cara Penfold ran well and was enthusiastic as ever, running a time of 32:26 in 279 th position. The team finished 18 th out of 54 complete teams. 487 runners completed the course, which was won after a close run-race by Winchester& District s Louise Damen in 23:49, ahead of Hatti Dean of Yorkshire club Hallamshire. The Bronze medal went to Olympian and Commonwealth marathon runner, Liz Yelling, who won on this course 3 years ago. The conditions for the senior men s race were even more atrocious, with thick mud on most parts of the course. Following incidents earlier in the programme the planned course for the men was reduced from three large laps of 4km each to 1 small lap and two large laps, a distance of approximately 10km. There was a disappointing turnout for the Holmfirth men, who were unable to field a team of six athletes. Richard Smith, ever present during the cross country season, decided to withdraw from the race when he heard news of injuries caused by the conditions and didn t want to risk injury after sustaining similar injuries in the past. Mark Buckingham led the Holmfirth challenge in his first outing of the cross country season. It was clear the conditions were not to his liking and after a steady start he was in the top fifty on the first big lap, but finished 85 th in a time of Nathan Martin had a good run for 367 th place in 45.22, followed by Gavin Pilkington 728 th (51.00) and Brandon Holroyd 843 rd (53.15). Over 1,300 men finished the race with Steve Vernon of Stockport, runner-up in the Northern Championships, winning in a time of

5 Newsletter February CROSS COUNTRY National Mud Slide Championships 2011 continued.. Report by Daisy Mae When we woke up it was white, snow had fallen! It was about two inches thick. This unexpected turn of weather surprised us all, even scared a few. The roads were white and most of us hoped it wouldn t be snowy on the course. However, the course at Alton Towers was not snowy it was cold, muddy and wet. Not normal mud either, this mud had an orange tinge to it. Strange?! U15 boys, with a rush to get to their event on time set off into the mud to enjoy the 4.5k course with lots of hills and a mountain to go up. Aaron Arthur (left) was first back for Holmfirth running strongly to come in 242 nd place in a time of 21m 07s with Eddie Hinchliffe in 265 th (21.30) and brother Robert 315 th. As the U13 girls waited for the start of their race in their shorts and vests (!) they talked about the course. Since there were only three (a Smith and two Byrams) they could not have a team prize, did the others know something we didn t?...anyway, back to the talk: Lucy Byram explained to me that there was a very very very big hill. Then the air horn sounded, three minutes to go, our conversation continued with Lucy saying she wanted to come in the top 200, then Take your marks and the gun went. Lucy certainly did just that being first back for Holmfirth in a time of 16m 02s in 96 th position, sister Erica following in 166 th (16.40) and Daisy Mae 266 th (17.55) (top right). Next up were the U17 men and Max Kaye (right) ran exceptionally to take 20 th place in just 24m 55s despite saying afterwards that it was the worst conditions and toughest course he d ever run. Max was backed up by Thomas Travis-Pollard in 104 th (27.03), Max Lawton and Jake Richardson in 199 th and 250 th respectively. They were the only juniors to field a team, finishing in a brilliant 15 th position. By now the mud had taken a turn for the worse, disrupting the program. U15 girls were dismissed from their starting pens to allow officials time to investigate the spiralling number of broken bones. Some 20 plus minutes later Sophie Spencer (left) got her chance to shine, the sole Holmfirth representative in this event, coming in 186 th place in a time of 18m 18s. Finally it was the turn of the U13 boys. Unfortunately their race was unexpectedly cut short leaving Lewis Byram 41 st and Aaron Kettlewell 98 th very disappointed. Team mate Lewis Bartholomew ran extremely well for 163 rd place. All competitors are to be congratulated on completing the course and brought back enough mud for the entire club. Daisy Mae
