1 Holmfirth Harriers Triathlon Super Harriers! In July we hosted our very first junior triathlon in Holmfirth. We had maximum participation and the event was a huge success (much to my relief). This was down to a team effort on the day from many mums, dads, grandparents and friends for helping out. The children were all wonderful, mostly sorting themselves out as (we were a little busy) and behaved spectacularly well as we have come to expect, well done all! 2 NEWS Todmorden Triathlon 4 th July Not put off by the early start, the first race off at 8am, Holmfirth Juniors were once more out in force enjoying the excellent facilities of the Todmorden Park and Leisure Centre. In total 25 Harriers completed the race a fantastic turnout. In the first race of the day the Tristar 3 (13 & 14 year olds) Holmfirth provided the winner of both the boys and girls events. Harmonie Waterman was comfortably first once again in the girls and Lewis Byram in the boys. Harmonie was joined in the girl s event by Amira Mellor racing strongly in 3rd. The Tristar 2 race, second of the day was a real treat for Holmfirth supporters with 8 boys finishing in the top 10! Seth Waterman was just pipped to first place by a fast finishing Josh Schofield of White Rose Triathletes. Ben Dickinson repeated his excellent performance of 3 weeks ago at Harrogate and took the final podium position. The girl s race was hard fought Zoe Kitching of Leeds just getting the better of Holmfirth s Erica Byram in 2nd. With over 50 athletes competing, the Tristar 1 (9 & 10 year olds) event was a tough race, in the girls 2 Holmfirth Harriers came out on top, Sunnivah Waterman with a fantastic race finishing first followed home by Libby Shepherd in her first triathlon in second place. The Boys race was also extremely competitive, Tiras Waterman with a podium place in 3rd, just one second off 2nd place. Holmfirth were also represented in both the oldest and youngest age groups. Emily Harris had a good race finishing first in the Youth Girls event and in the youngest age group Thomas Ford, was eighth in the Tristart boys race. Holmfirth Senior Triathletes in Action in Ripon Three Senior Holmfirth Athletes were also in action at the weekend competing in the Ripon Triathlon. This event, the largest triathlon in Yorkshire takes place annually based at Ripon Race course and incorporates the National Police Triathlon Championship. Holmfirth s John Levick, competing for West Yorkshire Police finished in 24th position overall out of a field of 700 in a time of , 5th in the Over 40 age group and 4th in the police championship, a fantastic race for him. Kath Farquhar also raced well, coming home 3rd female and winning the Over 40 female age category in a time of Andrew Kerry still recovering from the Half Ironman distance race he had completed the weekend before finished strongly in a time of
3 NEWS Holmfirth Tri 11 th July Nearly 100 local junior triathletes descended on Holmfirth to take part in the inaugural Holmfirth Junior Triathlon. The event, made possible by generous sponsorship from David Brown Engineering and great support from Holmfirth Swimming pool and Kirklees Active Leisure, was organised by Holmfirth Harriers Triathlon section. Thirty seven young members of Holmfirth Harriers competed a fantastic turn out for the club and extremely exciting for all the supporters. In addition to these there were many other local children enjoying the event. In the Tri start age group (7 & 8 year olds) Millie Yates of Holmfirth finished 3rd, with Isabelle Dendle in 6th position in the boys race Thomas Ford was 5th and Samuel Beddingfield, our newest member was 6th. Libby Shepherd (Pic Right) in only her 2nd triathlon was clear winner of the Tri star 1 girls race (9 &10 year olds), she was followed home by Amy Kettlewell also racing in her 2nd triathlon in 2nd place, Sunnivah Waterman just missed out on the trophies in 4th. Tiras Waterman returned to winning ways and finished in 1st position in the Tri star 1 boys race. Above Tristar 1 Finn Kerry In the Tristar 2 race Byram twins Lucy and Erica (pict right with Olivia Sykes) were just pipped to the post by Emma Clapton of Scarborough. The twins had their usual battle with Erica coming out on top this time finishing in 2nd position and Lucy in third spot. The boys race at Tristar 2 was a real battle. Holmfirth s Seth Waterman being edged out by Josh Schofield of White Rose Tri and finishing 2nd, followed home by Ben Dickinson in 3rd being chased down by Andrew Farquhar in 4th. Harmonie Waterman added to her unbroken series of victories so far in the Yorkshire and Humbersid e Triathlon Series in the Tristar 3 girls race, with 1st place on Sunday, following her hom e wa s fellow Holmfirth athlete Amira Mellor in 2nd. In the boys race Lewis Byram also added to his clean sweep so far of series victories winning the Tristar 3 boys race with the largest winning margin of the day.
4 NEWS Hetton Lyons Tri 17th July Just a few juniors went to Hetton Lyons Country Park in Sunderland to take part in an event outside of our region (north east). This was a rare opportunity to swim in an open water event with full distances in each age group. Reports back from the children were that the water was full of weeds and quite scary, but they all managed to put on great performances. Tristar 2's Lucy & Erica Byram were in the water first, in a rather large field including the boys of 33 competitors. The girls cycled and ran very well and with a sprint finish Lucy took 3rd place girl and Erica after a difficult swim took 5th. Tri Handbook The triathlon handbook is still available to download from the tri section of the new web site. Or you can pick up your copy from the tri notice board at the club. Tristar 3's were next with Lewis Byram, Lucy Farquhar and Sophie Williams. Lucy had a fantastic swim and was 1st girl out of the water. She held on to the lead with an excellent bike leg and with the final run with competitors closing managed to hold on by a comfortable margin and claimed 1st place. Lewis had a good race overall and managed to finish 3rd boy, 1st was a boy at the top of the age group and 2nd was the boy who won the TS2 IRC's last year, so excellent effort to come from behind after the swim and bike to an excellent run and fastest of the day. He is now determined to work on his swimming more! Sophie put in a huge performance after a difficult swim, had a really good bike and run to finish to much applause, an excellent achievement and finished 5th.
