O U T L O O K Since winning the school s first NCAA Cross Country titles in 1996, Stanford University has dominated the collegiate cross country scene at every level establishing itself as the premier men s and women s cross country program in the United States. In 2003, Stanford solidified its reign of supremacy in collegiate cross country with two dominating performances at the NCAA Championships. For the second time in eight years, Stanford University reached the pinnacle in collegiate cross country by winning the men s and women s NCAA Division I titles in 2003 in Waterloo, Iowa. Stanford, who swept the men s and women s national titles in 1996, became the only university in the history of the NCAA to win dual championship titles in the same year on two separate occasions adding to the impressive list of accomplishments of Stanford Cross Country. The Stanford men have finished first in four of the last eight NCAA Chris Emme Championships, including national titles in 1996, 1997, 2002 and In that same eight year span, Stanford has finished second (1998, 2001) and fourth (1999, 2000) twice. At the Pac-10 and NCAA Regional levels the results are even more amazing. Stanford has won eight consecutive NCAA West Regional titles and seven of the last eight Pac-10 Conference championship titles. The Cardinal men have garnered numerous individual accolades since 1996 as well, including 35 All-America honors, four Pac-10 Athlete of the Year winners ( ) and four Pac-10 individual champions ( ). In the last eight years, the Stanford women have captured NCAA titles in 1996 and 2003, finished runner-up twice (1997 and 2002) and placed third three times ( ). At the Pac-10 Championships, the Cardinal women have won eight consecutive team titles. Stanford has dominated the competition at the NCAA West Regional Championships as well, winning seven of the last eight titles. Since 1996, Cardinal women have earned 22 All-America awards, three Pac-10 Athlete of the Year honors (1999, 2002, 2003) and four Pac-10 individual champions (1999, ). In 2004, the Stanford contingent will attempt to add to the many team and individual awards achieved by the great Cardinal runners of the past and continue its powerful presence in collegiate cross country. Men s Outlook Cross Country Supremacy Any university would be hard-pressed to duplicate the record setting performance by Stanford at the 2003 NCAA Championships and to replace one of the greatest cross country teams in NCAA history. At last year s championship meet, Stanford placed six runners in the top-13 for a winning team score of 24 points. The 150 point margin of victory over second place Wisconsin was the largest in NCAA history. Six of the seven runners from last year s Stanford championship team have graduated, but a large group of young, talented student-athletes are prepared to fill the void and continue the supremacy established by prior Cardinal teams. Ryan Hall enters his senior year at Stanford as the top returning cross country runner in the nation after finishing runner-up individually at the NCAA Championship meet in Hall, the 2003 Pac-10 Cross Country Athlete of the Year, is a two-time cross country All-American and will be a major contender for a top finish at the NCAA Championships in In addition to senior leadership, Hall will provide the Cardinal with veteran NCAA Championship meet experience after helping lead Stanford to the past two cross country national titles. Ryan Hall is undoubtedly one of the top collegiate cross country runners in the United States and he will be a major factor in the success of our team in 2004, said Men s Cross Country Coach Andrew Gerard. After his outstanding season last year, he has proven that he belongs at or near the front of the pack in every race. Chris Emme returns from a junior cross country season in which he finished in the top seven at the Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional Championships. On the track, Emme was the 2004 Pac-10 runner-up in the 10,000 meters and competed in the 3000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The senior from The Woodlands, TX will be a significant contributor for Stanford cross country in The Cardinal will rely heavily on a junior class loaded with talent, but light on NCAA experience. Neil Davis was the 2002 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year and finished in the top-10 at the 2002 and 2003 NCAA West Regional Championships. As a freshman in 2003, Davis competed in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Peter Meindl was an All-Pac-10 selection in cross country as a freshman in 2002 and competed for Stanford at the 2002 NCAA Championship meet helping the Cardinal win the national title. Meindl redshirted the 2003 cross country season. David Vidal returns from the 2004 track and field season in which he developed into one of the top 3000 meter steeplechase runners in the Pac-10 Conference. Vidal finished in the top five two times during the 2003 cross country season. Robert Smitson returns from a redshirt season in 2003, but was a member of the Stanford title winning teams at the 2002 Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional Championships. Former Pac meter champion Justin Romaniuk and Russ Martin will provide depth to the strong junior class. Like the Stanford junior class, the Cardinal sophomores are prepared to display their exceptional talent at the NCAA championship level. Jacob Gomez had a solid cross country season in 2003 competing for the winning Cardinal team at the Pac-10 Championships. Gomez continued his success during the track and field season by qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 5000 meters. Brett Gotcher developed The Stanford men have finished first in four of the last eight NCAA Championships, including national titles in 1996, 1997, 2002 and Neil Davis 5

O U T L O O K Brett Gotcher All seven members of the women s title winning 2003 NCAA Championship team return, including five All-Americans and two runners that finished in the top six individually at the NCAA meet. into one of the top 10,000 meter runners in the country during the 2004 track and field season and helped Stanford win the Pac-10 cross country title in Jonathan Pierce is poised for a breakthrough cross country season after setting a freshman school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase last year. Pierce was the Bronco Cross Country Invitational individual champion in Steven Dewitt, Rolf Steier and Sean Drake competed as freshman last year and will contribute significantly for the Cardinal in After not competing during their first year on The Farm, redshirt freshmen Neftalem Araia, Forrest Tahdooahnippah, Joaquin Chapa, Lauren Jespersen and Russell Brown will make an immediate impact in their first year of competition in Araia enjoyed a great indoor track and field season qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 5000 meters with a time of 13: Tahdooahnippah gained international experience by competing for the United States at the World Junior Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium where he was the No. 2 runner for the U.S. Team. Chapa was one of the top middle distance runners in the Pac-10 Conference during the 2004 track and field season and will look to carry that success into the cross country season. Brown competed in the 1500 meters for the United States at the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Grosseto, Italy. Jespersen was a two-time Footlocker National Championship finalist in high school. This year s Stanford team is markedly different from the 2003 NCAA title winning team, says Gerard. We don t have the senior experience like last year, but we do have incredible junior and sophomore talent that has prepared patiently to step into the spotlight and compete at the highest level. Once again, Stanford has cornered the market on the nation s top high school distance runners. This highly touted group of freshmen will keep the Stanford program at the top of the collegiate ranks for many years. The list includes Hakon DeVries (Hopewell Junction, NY), Jacob Evans (Watsonville, CA), Garrett Heath (Winona, MN), Hari Mix (Charlottesville, VA), Kevin Pellegrino (Klamath Falls, OR) and Greg Williams (West Chester, PA). DeVries was a 2002 Footlocker National Championship finalist and a two-time New York state champion in the two mile. Evans was a California state meet finalist in cross country and track and field. Heath was a two-time Footlocker National Championship finalist and a two-time Minnesota state cross country champion. Mix was the 2003 Virginia Cross Country Runner of the Year. Pellegrino was one of the top middle distance runners in Oregon during the past two years. Williams was a Pennsylvania all-state performer in cross country and track and field. Although young, the Stanford men s cross country team is primed for big performances in The Cardinal harriers are prepared to take over the reigns of the Stanford machine and continue the Stanford supremacy at the Pac-10 Conference and NCAA Championship meets. Women s Outlook The Stanford women s cross country team will have a familiar look in The 2004 women s roster is nearly the same as last year s squad that won the NCAA cross country title for the second time in eight years. In 2004, the Stanford pool of talent is one of the strongest in school history as all seven members of the title winning 2003 NCAA Championship team return, including five All-Americans and two runners that finished in the top six individually at the NCAA meet. With an abundance of All-Americans and a highly touted freshman class, a successful defense of the NCAA cross country title is possible for the Stanford Cardinal in One of the most talented senior duos in the NCAA will lead the Cardinal in Along with exceptional talent, big meet experience and senior leadership, Alicia Craig and Sara Bei bring with them a total of 12 All-America awards. Since her arrival at Stanford in 2001, eight time All- American Alicia Craig has distinguished herself as the premier collegiate long distance runner in the United States. Craig has been named a cross country All-American every year at Stanford and has finished sixth and third individually at the last two NCAA Cross Country Championship meets. Craig returns for her senior year after a great junior cross country campaign in which she was the NCAA West Regional individual champion and named the NCAA West Regional Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. The success for Craig continued during the 2004 track and field season as she was the NCAA and Pac-10 champion in the 10,000 meters for the second consecutive season. During the 2004 track and field season, Craig became the collegiate record holder setting the all-time NCAA record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32: Craig concluded her 2004 track and field season by placing fifth in the 10,000 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials, the highest finish among all collegiate runners in the race. Alicia Craig is clearly one of the most outstanding student-athletes in the NCAA, said Women s Cross Country Coach Dena Evans. She has consistently performed at an elite level since coming to Stanford and she is a huge reason for the success of Stanford Cross Country at the Conference and national championship meets. Sara Bei returns for her senior year after a breakthrough cross country and track and field season last year. During the 2003 cross country season, Bei was named the Pac-10 Athlete of the Year, was the Pac-10 individual champion for the second consecutive year, and finished Katy Trotter third individually at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America 6

O U T L O O K honors and lead Stanford to the national title. During the 2004 track and field season, Bei finished runner-up in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placed second in the 3000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships, was the Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional champion in the 5000 meters, and was named a three time All- American. Sara has distinguished herself as one of the top middle distance runners in the NCAA, says Evans. She is an ideal leader for our team and will play a huge role in the Stanford team performances at championship meets. The presence of Alicia and Sara in our lineup makes Stanford a contender for top team honors in any race, continued Evans. Seniors Anita Siraki and Jeane Goff will provide valuable veteran experience after competing at the Arianna Lambie 2002 and 2003 NCAA Championship meets, helping the Cardinal win the national title in the latter. Siraki is one of the top 10,000 meter runners in the Pac-10, while Goff is considered one of the best 3000 meter steeplechase runners in the nation. The return of junior Kristin Cohoon after a redshirt season in 2003 will be an added bonus for the Cardinal. After contributing significantly as freshmen last season during Stanford s NCAA title run, the Stanford sophomore class will be a very important factor for the Cardinal throughout its championship quests in Arianna Lambie was named the 2003 Pac- 10 Cross Country Newcomer of the Year after placing third individually at the Pac-10 Championships. Lambie was Stanford s fourth runner and 24th overall at the 2003 NCAA Championships earning All-America honors for her efforts. During the 2004 track and field season, Lambie was the No. 1 ranked freshman in the NCAA in the 1500 meters with a freshman school record time of 4:13.14, the seventh fastest time in Pac-10 history. Katy Trotter was a cross country All-American in 2003 after placing 21st at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish by a freshman at the meet. Trotter finished sixth at the Pac-10 Championships, tenth at the NCAA West Regional Championships, and was a first team All Pac-10 selection. Trotter was the No. 1 ranked freshman in the NCAA in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a school record time of 10:07.55, the third fastest time in Pac-10 history. Amanda Trotter was Stanford s fifth runner at the 2003 NCAA Championships enabling the Cardinal to capture the national title. Trotter was a second team All Pac-10 cross country selection as a freshman and was one the top 3000 meter steeplechase and 5000 meter runners in the Pac-10 during the 2004 track and field season. Teresa McWalters returns from a shortened freshman year in which she finished in the top five in two races before injuries ended her cross country season. When she is in top form, McWalters has the potential to be one of the best young cross country runners in the nation. Celia Smalls, Julie Allen, Leah Sawyer, Casey Nevitt, Carolyn Penner and Jia Hou will provide additional depth from the sophomore class. Smalls was a member of the winning Stanford teams at the 2003 Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships. Allen was a Pac-10 Championship qualifier in the 5000 meters during the 2004 track and field season. Our sophomore student-athletes performed exceptionally last year as freshmen, says Evans. After the success they enjoyed last season, I think they realize they belong among the elite collegiate runners in A strong freshman class featuring many of the top high school runners in the United States will bolster the Cardinal lineup in The new additions to Stanford include Lindsay Allen (Pleasant Hill, CA), Shannon Bergstedt (Minnetonka, MN), Lauren Centrowitz (Arnold, MD), Lindsay Flacks (Calabasas, CA), Katie Harrington (Carmel, IN) and Katie O Neil (Boise, ID). Allen was a two-time top five finisher at the California state cross country championship meet and set the national high school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the 2004 U.S. Junior National Championships. Bergstedt was the 2003 Minnesota state cross country champion and won seven state titles in the 1600 and 3200 meters in track. Centrowitz was a two-time Maryland state cross country individual champion and was one of the top high school middle distance runners in the United States. Flacks was a 2003 Footlocker National Championship finalist and was the California state champion in the 3200 meters as a senior. Harrington placed fourth at the 2003 Footlocker National Championships and was the Indiana state cross country champion as a junior. O Neil led her high school team to two cross country state titles and one track state championship. With the entire NCAA Championship team intact from last year and the addition of one of the top freshmen recruiting classes in the country, the Stanford women s cross country team will once again be a major contender for Pac-10 and NCAA titles, continuing its impressive championship title streak. Amanda Trotter Stanford has won 14 of the last 15 men s and women s Pac-10 Championship titles. 7

On October 1, 1891, the 465 new students who were on hand for opening day ceremonies at Leland Stanford Junior University greeted Leland and Jane Stanford enthusiastically, with a chant they had made up and rehearsed only that morning. Wah-hoo! Wah-hoo! L-S-J-U! Stanford! Its wild and spirited tone symbolized the excitement of this bold adventure. As a pioneer faculty member recalled, Hope was in every heart, and the presiding spirit of freedom prompted us to dare greatly. For the Stanford s on that day, the university was the realization of a dream and a fitting tribute to the memory of their only son, who had died of typhoid fever weeks before his sixteenth birthday. Far from the nation s center of culture and unencumbered by tradition or ivy, the new university drew S T A N F O R D U N I V E R S I T Y Millions of volumes are housed in many libraries throughout the campus. students from all over the country: many from California; some who followed professors hired from other colleges and universities; and some simply seeking adventure in the West. Though there were many difficulties during the first months housing was inadequate, microscopes and books were late in arriving from the East the first year foretold greatness. As Jane Stanford wrote in the summer of 1892, Even our fondest hopes have been realized. Stanford University The University at a Glance 28

S T A N F O R D U N I V E R S I T Y Ideas of Practical Education Governor and Mrs. Stanford had come from families of modest means and had built their way up through a life of hard work. So it was natural that their first thoughts were to establish an institution where young men and women could grapple successfully with the practicalities of life. As their thoughts matured, these ideas of practical education enlarged to the concept of producing cultured and useful citizens who were well-prepared for professional success. More than one hundred years later, the university still enjoys the original 8,180 acres (almost 13 square miles) of grassy fields, eucalyptus groves, and rolling hills that were the Stanfords generous legacy, as well as the Quadrangle of long corridors with their stately pillars at the center of campus. It is still true, as the philosopher William James said, during his stint as a visiting professor, that the climate is so friendly... that every morning wakes one fresh for new amounts of work. Current Perspectives In other ways, the university has changed tremendously on its way to recognition as one of the world s great universities. At the hub of a vital and diverse Bay Area, Stanford is an hour s drive south of San Francisco and just a few miles north of the Silicon Valley, an area dotted with computer and high technology firms largely spawned by the university s faculty and graduates. On campus, students and faculty enjoy new libraries, modern laboratories, sports facilities, and comfortable residences. Contemporary sculpture, as well as pieces from the Stanford Museum s extensive collection of sculpture by Auguste Rodin, is placed throughout the campus, providing unexpected pleasures at many turns. At the Stanford Medical Center, world-renowned for its research, teaching, and patient care, scientists and physicians are searching for answers to fundamental questions about health and disease. Ninety miles down the coast, at Stanford s Hopkins Marine Station on the Monterey Bay, scientists are working to better understand the mechanisms of evolution, human development, and ecological systems. The university is organized into seven schools: Earth Sciences, Education, Engineering, the Graduate School of Business, Humanities and Sciences, Law and Medicine. In addition, there are more than 30 interdisciplinary centers, programs, and research laboratories including the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace; the Institute for International Studies; the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center; and the Stanford Center for the Study of Families, Children and Youth where faculty from a wide range of fields bring different perspectives to bear on issues and problems. Stanford s Overseas Studies Program offers students in all fields remarkable opportunities for study abroad, with campuses in Paris, Kyoto, Santiago, Berlin, Oxford, Florence, and Moscow. Stanford People By any measure, Stanford s faculty which numbers approximately 1,700 is one of the most distinguished in the nation. It includes 17 Nobel laureates, 4 Pulitzer Prize winners, 21 National Medal of Science winners, 124 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 219 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 83 members of the National Academy of Engineering, and 24 members of the National Academy of Education. Yet beyond their array of honors, what truly distinguishes Stanford faculty is their commitment to sharing knowledge with their students. The great majority of professors teach undergraduates both in introductory lecture classes and in small advanced seminars. Currently 13,900 students, of which 6,500 are undergraduates, live and study on campus. About 40 percent come from California, but all 50 states and approximately 100 countries are represented as well. Among undergraduates, 44 percent are African American, Asian American, Hispanic or Native American. Like the faculty, the Stanford student body is distinguished. Approximately 10 students apply to Stanford for every place in the freshman class. Seventy-six Stanford students have been named Rhodes Scholars and 52 have been named Marshall Scholars. Nearly 90 percent of graduating seniors plan to attend graduate or professional schools. Stanford students also shine in a tremendous array of activities outside the classroom from student government to music, theater, and journalism. Through the Haas Center for Public Service, students participate in dozens of community service activities, such as tutoring programs for children in nearby East Palo Alto, the Hunger Project, and the Arbor Free Clinic. In the athletic arena, Stanford students have enjoyed tremendous success as well. Stanford fields teams in 34 Division I varsity sports equally divided between men s and women s teams. Of Stanford s 98 national team titles, 48 have been captured since 1990, by far the most in the nation. Thirty-eight of Stanford s athletes and coaches participated in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, 49 competed in Atlanta at the 1996 Games and 34 represented Stanford at the 2000 Games in Sydney by far the most of any university in the nation. Intramural and club sports are also popular; over 1,000 students take part in the club sports program, while participation in the intramural program has reached 9,000, with many students active in more than one sport. Looking Ahead In her address to the Board of Trustees, in 1904, Jane Stanford said,... Let us not be afraid to outgrow old thoughts and ways, and dare to think on new lines as to the future of the work under our care. Her thoughts echo in the words of former Stanford President Gerhard Casper, who has said, The true university must reinvent itself every day... At Stanford, these are days of such reconsideration and fresh support for our fundamental tasks teaching, learning, and research. Stanford University still enjoys the original 8,100 acres of grassy fields, eucalyptus groves, and rolling hills that were the Stanfords generous legacy. 29

S T A N F O R D A T H L E T I C S No other athletic department in the country can boast of the kind of success that Stanford has accomplished. 30 Stanford Athletics Home of Champions 11-time NCAA champion Tara Kirk was named the Honda Broderick Award winner as the nation s top collegiate women s athlete in Home of Champions. Those are the bywords for the Stanford University Athletic Department. And for good reason. No athletic department in the country can boast of the kind of success that Stanford has accomplished since the 1980s. NCAA team champions. NCAA individual champions. Olympic medalists. Stanford University athletes have been all over the world capturing championships. The statistics speak for themselves: Stanford University has won 71 NCAA team championships since 1980, the most in the nation; Cardinal athletes have won 48 NCAA championships since 1990 again the most in the nation. Stanford has brought home 26 NCAA championship trophies the past seven years, including an unprecedented six NCAA team titles in In , Stanford athletes took home 29 individual NCAA titles an NCAA record. Cardinal athletes won 21 individual championships during the season, the second most in history. Even more impressive is Stanford s string of 10 consecutive United States Sports Academy Directors Cup titles ( ). The award honors the nation s top overall athletic program and with nine straight #1 finishes, it s no wonder Stanford is considered the dominant athletic program in the nation. Stanford captured its 10th straight Directors Cup in with points, winning the honor by 111 points over second place Michigan. The Cardinal won a total of three NCAA team crowns with championships in men s and women s cross country and women s tennis and had top-five finishes in men s water polo, women s basketball, men s swimming, women s swimming, men s gymnastics, women s gymnastics, Tiger Woods is one of the PGA s most successful golfers. Sophomore Alicia Craig repeated as 10,000 meter champion at the 2004 NCAA Track & Field Championships synchronized swimming, softball, men s tennis and women s water polo. A total of 13 Stanford teams finished among the nation s Top Five and 21 among the Top 10. The Cardinal also picked up eight individual NCAA titles and 11 team conference championships. Stanford has now won at least one NCAA team championship for 27 straight years. Cardinal teams have also won four or more NCAA team titles in a single year nine times, an NCAA best. All totaled, Stanford has won 98 collegiate team titles (88 NCAA championships) and 386 NCAA individual titles. Cardinal women have won an NCAA-best 31 team championships while men s teams have captured 57 NCAA team titles, third best in the nation. Overall, Stanford s 88 NCAA team championships rank second in the nation. In the last 11 years (since ), Stanford has claimed 38 national team championships and 35 NCAA team titles the best in the country. During the campaign, Stanford teams captured two NCAA team championships, 14 conference titles and had 24 teams finish among the nation s top-10 as it won its ninth straight Directors Cup by a wide margin over Texas. Stanford was equally impressive in , winning four NCAA team championships and the Directors Cup once again. The Cardinal took home national titles in women s volleyball, men s water polo, women s water polo and women s tennis, placed 11 teams in the top-five and 21 in the top-10. In , Stanford s football team won the Pacific-10 Conference championship and played in the Rose Bowl for the first time in 28 years while the men s basketball team earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, tied for the conference title, finished 27-4 overall and held the nation s No. 1 ranking during the season. The Cardinal baseball team followed by sharing the Pac- 10 crown and advancing to the College World Series, marking the first time in history that a school won Pac-10 championships in football, men s basketball and baseball in the same year. Stanford has also enjoyed unequaled success in Olympic competition. At the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece, Stanford University was represented by a total of 42 athletes and coaches. At the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, Stanford University was represented by a total of 34 athletes and coaches. The Cardinal contingent won a total of 10 medals four gold, three silver and three bronze. At the 1996 Games in Atlanta, Stanford again placed 49 coaches and athletes on Olympic Teams, including three head United States Olympic coaches (Tara VanDerveer, women s basketball; Richard Quick, women s swimming; Skip Kenney, men s swimming). Stanford athletes accounted for 16 gold medals, one silver and one bronze in Atlanta. At the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Cardinal athletes earned 19 medals 10 gold, four silver and five bronze. If Stanford were a country, it would ve placed 13th in the world with its 19 medals and ninth with 10 golds. Thirtyeight Stanford-affiliated athletes and coaches participated in Barcelona while 41 members of the Cardinal family took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. National titles have become quite commonplace in the Stanford Athletic Department. In , Cardinal teams set an NCAA record by winning six NCAA team championships in a single academic year: men s and women s cross country, men s and women s volleyball and men s

S T A N F O R D A T H L E T I C S and women s tennis. Nine other teams finished in the Top Four nationally, including second place finishes in women s swimming, men s swimming, men s water polo and women s synchronized swimming. Stanford also posted third place finishes in women s basketball, baseball and fencing, as well as fourth place finishes in women s golf and women s water polo. The school year also saw the Cardinal football team advance to the Sun Bowl, the 18th bowl game in school history, the women s basketball team return to the Final Four, the baseball team qualify for the College World Series and the men s basketball team advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since it won the 1942 NCAA title. The following year ( ) Stanford won six national team titles in men s cross country, women s volleyball, men s swimming, women s swimming and men s tennis along with a U.S. Collegiate title in synchronized swimming. Also, 14 teams finished among the nation s Top Five, 19 in the Top 10 and 22 in the Top 20. Other teams finishing among the Top Five nationally included men s basketball, which made its first Final Four appearance in 56 years, women s tennis, men s water polo, women s water polo and fencing. During the campaign, Stanford won one NCAA team title in women s tennis and one U.S. Collegiate Championship in synchronized swimming while seven teams placed second in the nation. During the season, Stanford won two NCAA team championships (men s tennis, men s track and field) and placed second nationally in six other sports. The campaign saw the Cardinal win one NCAA championship (women s tennis) and have 15 other teams place among the nation s top five. Stanford has won 160 conference or regional titles since 1991, again the best in the country. Cardinal teams won a record 18 conference or regional championships in by far the best performance of any school in the nation. Not only has the Cardinal won an NCAA record six NCAA team championships in a single season ( ), but it has also won five NCAA titles in a single year on three occasions: , and Cardinal teams have won four championships in a single academic year on five occasions: , 86-87, 92-93, and Stanford has simply dominated in several sports. Under head coach Dick Gould, the Cardinal men s tennis team has won 17 NCAA titles while the women s team has hauled in 14 national titles, including 10 under former head coach Frank Brennan and three in the last four years under current coach Lele Forood. The men s swimming program has won eight NCAA team championships, seven under current head coach Skip Kenney while the men s water polo team has captured 11 national titles. The Cardinal women s swimming team has won nine national titles, seven under current head coach Richard Quick. Quick has been the head coach for the United States Olympic Swimming teams in 1988 (Seoul), 1996 (Atlanta) and 2000 (Sydney.) Tara VanDerveer, the 1996 United States Olympic Head Women s Basketball Coach, has led the Cardinal to two NCAA championships and five appearances in the Final Four. Baseball coach Mark Marquess, who was the head coach of the gold medal winning 1988 United States Olympic baseball team, led the Cardinal to back-to-back College World Series titles in 1987 and 88. Former men s gymnastics coach Sadao Hamada led the Cardinal to three NCAA championships, current men s volleyball coach Don Shaw guided the Stanford women s volleyball program to four NCAA titles in the 1990s and current head women s volleyball coach John Dunning guided the Cardinal to an NCAA title in his first season in Former men s golf coach Wally Goodwin led his team to the NCAA title in 1994, the first men s golf title at Stanford since Former Director of Track Vin Lananna joined the championship parade in 1996 by leading Stanford became the only school in NCAA history to win both men s and women s cross country titles in the same year twice. both his men s and women s cross country teams to national titles. He came back in 1997 to lead his men s cross country team to another NCAA title and in 2000, his men s track and field team won the first national championship in track at Stanford since Lananna also led the men s cross country program to the 2003 NCAA Championship. Olympic gold medalists are numerous on The Farm. Former Cardinal standout Bob Mathias won back-to-back Olympic decathlon gold medals in 1948 and 52 while swimmers Pablo Morales, Jenny Thompson, Summer Sanders, Janet Evans and Misty Hyman have become household names in the swimming world. Morales, who helped Stanford win three straight NCAA team championships ( ), won three medals at the 84 Games in Los Angeles (one gold, two silver) and two more gold medals at the 92 Games in Barcelona. Evans won three golds in the 88 Games in Seoul and one gold and one silver in Barcelona, while Sanders won four medals in Barcelona; two gold, one silver and one bronze. Thompson is the most decorated athlete in Olympic history with eight gold medals, a silver and a bronze. Hyman added her name to the list of Stanford swimming greats by winning the 2000 Olympic Gold Medal in the 200 meter butterfly to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the Sydney Olympiad. Some of the great student-athletes in Stanford history include Tiger Woods and Tom Watson (golf), John McEnroe, Roscoe Tanner and Tim Mayotte (men s tennis), Kim Oden and Kristin Klein (women s volleyball), Kristin Folkl (basketball/volleyball), Jack McDowell and Mike Mussina (baseball), Julie Foudy (women s soccer), Hank Luisetti, Brevin Knight and Mark Madsen (men s basketball), Jennifer Azzi and Kate Starbird (women s basketball), Jim Plunkett, John Elway and Troy Walters (football), Debi Thomas (figure skating), Eric Heiden (speed skating) and the great Ernie Nevers (football), to name a few. It s no wonder Stanford University is often referred to as the NCAA s Champion of Champions. Since 1916 for men, and 1977 for women, Stanford has enjoyed success on the national and international levels. Cardinal runners have competed for numerous United States Junior and Senior National teams, and have been prominent competitors at the Olympics and the World Championships. On the collegiate level, Stanford has been the most dominant men s and women s cross country team over the last 12 years. The Cardinal men s and women s cross country teams have finished in the top five at the NCAA Championships every year since 1996, including four men s national titles (1996, 1997, 2002, 2003) and two women s national titles (1996, 2003). Since 1996, Stanford has won 14 of 15 men s and women s NCAA West Regional Cross Country titles. The Cardinal women have won 10 of the last 11 Pac-10 Cross Country Championships while the men have stood atop the awards podium at seven of the last eight conference championships. Over the years, Stanford has produced some of the nation s finest men s distance runners, including All-Americans Harry McCalla ( 65), Greg Brock ( 70), Brook Thomas ( 70), Don Kardong ( 71), Marc Olesen ( 86), Gary Stolz ( 93), Jason Lunn ( 98), Greg Jimmerson ( 98), Nathan Nutter ( 99), Brad and Brent Hauser ( 00), Jason Balkman ( 00), Michael Stember ( 01), Gabe Jennings ( 02), Jonathon Riley ( 02), Louis Luchini ( 04), Grant Robison ( 04), Ian Dobson ( 05) and Donald Sage ( 05). The Cardinal women s program first gained national prominence during the early 1980 s when future Olympians, and NCAA champions. Regina Jacobs, Alison Wiley, PattiSue Plumer, and Ceci (Hopp) St. Geme helped achieve national prominence for Stanford by producing NCAA runner-up finishes from and a third place finish in In the 1990 s, another large group of Cardinal athletes returned Stanford to the national spotlight. The long list of NCAA champions and All-Americans included Monal Chokshi ( 97), Sarna Renfro ( 98), Mary Cobb ( 99), Sally Glynn ( 01), Julia Stamps ( 02), Lauren Fleshman ( 03), and Malindi Elmore ( 03). Five members of the Stanford family competed at the 2004 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium. Freshmen Amanda and Katy Trotter and Forrest Tahdooahnippah competed for the U.S. Junior National team, while Stanford graduate Lauren Fleshman participated in the women s 4000 meter short course for Team USA. Also, Malindi Elmore competed for Canada. In 2003, Brett Gotcher was a member of the United States team that participated in the World Junior Cross Country Championships in Lusanne, Switzerland. Three Stanford athletes earned spots on Team USA for the World Cross Country Championships in Sara Bei finished third in the Junior Women s division at the 2002 U.S. Winter Cross Country Nationals in Vancouver, Washington, while Jonathon Riley finished eighth in the men s short course race. Stanford alumnus Greg Jimmerson secured his second consecutive spot as a member of the men s long course team by finishing sixth. Stanford s powerful cross country presence was in full force at the 2001 U.S. Winter Cross Country Nationals as current and former Cardinal runners earned spots on the U.S. Cross Country National Teams Olympian and Stanford alumnus Brad Hauser finished second in the Senior Men s 4000 meter race to earn his second consecutive berth on the U.S. team. Hauser was the top American finisher in the short course race at the World Cross Country Championships in Ostend, Belgium. Greg Jimmerson, a 1998 Stanford graduate, qualified for the U.S. National team after placing fourth in the Senior Men s 12,000 meter race and earned a bronze medal in Belgium as part of the third place American team. Ian Dobson finished third in the junior men s race to grab a spot on his first U.S. National team. Stanford athletes also have earned powerful credentials in track and field. Numerous middle distance and distance runners from Stanford competed at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, including Sara Bei (5000 meters), Alicia Craig (10,000 meters), Ian Dobson (3000 meter steeplechase), Seth Hejny, (5000 meters), Louis Luchini (5000 meters), Grant Robison (1500 meters) and Donald Sage (1500 meters). At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, Grant Robison ( 04) and Jonathon Riley ( 02) competed for the United States in the 1500 and 5000 meters, respectively. Malindi Elmore ( 03) competed for Canada in the 1500 meters. Stanford s Cobb Track and Angell Field proved to be a beautiful setting for the 2003 and 2002 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the USA Junior National Championships. Several members of the 2003 team competed in the middle distance and distance events, including top performances by Grant Robison (third at 1500 meters), Lauren Fleshman (fourth in the 5000 meters), Louis Luchini (fifth in the 5000 meters), Alicia Craig (fifth in the 5000 meters), Ian Dobson (sixth in the 10,000 meters) and Adam Tenforde (tenth in the 10,000 meters). In all, 21 current and former Stanford athletes competed at the 2003 U.S. Outdoor Championships including Sally Hauser, Ashley Wysong, Seth Hejny, Jonathon Riley (fourth in the 5000 meters) and Michael Stember (fourth in the 1500 meters). In the men s 1500 meter finals, Stanford athletes finished first, second and fourth. At the junior level, Brett Gotcher won the 10,000 meter title and Peter Meindl finished third in the 5000 meters. Gotcher went on to capture the gold medal at the Junior Pan American Championships in Barbados. During the summer of 2001, several Cardinal athletes competed at the U.S. Track and Field Championships, the World University Games, the Junior Pan Am Games, and the U.S. Junior National Championships. Ian Dobson and Chris Emme captured U.S. Junior National titles in the 5000 and 10,000 meters, respectively, to qualify for the Junior Pan American Championships in Santa Fe, Argentina. Stanford s Olympic tradition was perhaps best exemplified at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials when Cardinal runners Gabe Jennings, Brad Hauser and Michael Stember gained berths on the Olympic Team that competed in Sydney, Australia. Jennings captured first place honors in the 1500 meters at the 2000 Olympic Trials in Sacramento with a time of 3: For Jennings, being a member of the U.S. Olympic team and going to the Sydney Olympics was a dream come true. I remember dreaming as a young kid, thinking of where I d be in four years, said Jennings. All young kids do that. Here I am now, I can t explain it. It s one thing to dream it, quite another to make your dreams come true. Hauser, a 2000 Stanford graduate, competed in both the 10,000 and 5000 meters, earning his first Olympic berth with a second place finish and school record time of 13:27.31 in the 5000 meters. Hauser, a five-time NCAA champion and 12-time All-American, also ran the 10,000 meters at the 1999 World Championships. Stember, a 2001 Stanford graduate, placed third in the 1500 meters to gain a berth on the U.S. Olympic team. He established a new school record of 3:35.11 while representing the United States at the IAAF Golden League Meet in Monte Carlo, Monaco, in August of More than 20 Stanford track and field studentathletes competed at the 2000 Olympic Trials, Stanford Academic Excellence Stanford University has a world-renowned reputation for academic excellence and the cross country and track & field programs uphold that tradition. Started 11 years ago, the United States Cross Country Coaches Association began selecting individuals and teams for the honor of being named Academic All-American. Based upon the criteria that the entire roster must maintain an average of at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, both the men s and women s cross country teams at Stanford have been named Academic All-Americans each of the last 11 years. Numerous Stanford athletes have achieved All-America academic status in their careers. Stanford Golf Course The beautiful Stanford University Golf Course is home to the Cardinal men s and women s cross country teams. A shady site covered with more than 300 oak trees, the course is both picturesque and challenging. Just as rich as the scenery is the tradition of top flight cross country competition. Home of the NCAA District- 8 Championships for six seasons and the Pac-10 Championships from 1972 to 1997, the course has challenged some of the finest distance runners in the world. Stanford Invitational The Stanford Cross Country Invitational will be held for the 31st time in 2004 and will feature some of the nation s best men s and women s cross country teams. More than 3000 athletes representing more than 60 colleges and 175 high schools will compete at the Stanford Golf Course on September

N C A A C H A M P I O N S Continued from Inside Front Cover The strategy to winning was simple. Stay close and finish strong. Halfway through the race, six Stanford runners were within one second of the lead. With 2000 meters remaining, Cardinal runners were within three seconds of the leader. At that point, Hall broke away from the main pack in a two person dual with Dathan Ritzenhein of Colorado. The team performed tremendously, said Cardinal head coach Andrew Gerard. They performed like they have all year. I can t say enough about how well they handled the pressure and expectations. From a historical perspective, I m not sure where this team stands. I don t know how you can compare across generations, but I do know that the team did a great job in comparison to the rest of the field today. Gerard was named the 2003 NCAA Men s Cross Country Coach of the Year after the Stanford victory. To be honest, I prefer that it be Manager of the Year. I ve really just managed these athletes. It was really assembled and developed by Vin Lananna (former Stanford Director of Cross Country/Track & Field) and Michael Reilly (former Stanford assistant coach). I have to give them credit where credit is due. I am probably the luckiest man in the NCAA. I came into a great situation. The team executed well. To win Coach of the Year is a great honor. I m very appreciative of the award, but today s outcome is not solely my effort. The Stanford men have now won four of the last eight NCAA Cross Country titles (1996, 1997, 2002, 2003) and this year s team will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the best in NCAA history after its dominating performance at the NCAA Championships. The Stanford women entered the NCAA Championships as the No. 2 ranked team in the country behind two-time defending NCAA champion BYU. Led by a third place finish from junior Sara Bei (19:49.1) and a sixth place performance by junior Alicia Craig (19:55.00), the Cardinal dethroned BYU with a final team score of 120 points. BYU finished second with 128 points and Providence was third with 222 points. A trio of talented freshmen completed the team scoring for the Cardinal as Katy Trotter placed 21st (20:29.4), Arianna Lambie placed 24th (20:31.6) and Amanda Trotter finished 92nd (21:12.4). Katy Trotter was the highest placing freshman in the entire meet. Juniors Jeane Goff (21:17.3) and Anita Siraki (21:25.6) were the sixth and seventh finishers for the Cardinal, respectively. Sara Bei, Katy Trotter and Arianna Lambie earned their first cross country All- America awards while Alicia Craig was named All- American for the third consecutive year. It was awesome to see the team fulfill all the hard work they put in, said head women s coach Dena Evans. Sara and Alicia led the team in an aggressive fashion like they have been doing all year, and we got it done. We had gutsy performances throughout our lineup. Commenting on Stanford s championship performance in the extreme conditions, Evans continued, We were anticipating that it would be cold, so certainly it was no surprise We also have quite a few people on our team that are used to running in cold weather. Named the 2003 NCAA Women s Cross Country Coach of the Year, Evans stated, The team did a really good job in treating this like any other race. The men s team was a great source of inspiration for us. They are always confident and run as a team. I think the women s team saw the men s performance and believed it was possible to win if they properly executed the team plan. Winning the Coach of the Year award is just a reflection of our team s performance today. The NCAA title was the second for the Cardinal women, who also won top honors in The Stanford women have finished third or better at every NCAA Championship competition since 1996, with the exception of 2001, when the Cardinal finished fifth. Additional championships may be in line for the Cardinal in the near future as every member from the 2003 national championship team returns in Ryan Hall After winning men s and women s NCAA Cross Country tittles in 1996 and 2003, Stanford becomes the only school in NCAA history to sweep the men s and women s cross country national titles in the same year two different times.
