Mayor, Steve Allender of Rapid City kicked off the convention by welcoming everyone to Rapid and the facilities, and speaking about how we are the future of politics. He also shared his story of running for mayor and expressed how he was told If you want to win, you will have to bash and expose your opponent. He continued and shared about how he won without using any of those campaign tactics. Which went hand-in-hand with all the campaigns that would take place the following day for new state board positions. Entertainment for the night included an illusionist. Heil, who is on the state board as the Upper Missouri Region Representative, got to help on stage for part of the act. He commented, That was fun! Monday was filled with numerous workshops. This is a great time for us to really meet new people and also share things that our council does with other councils to get new ideas to bring back for the next year, stated Riley. The workshops also help with leadership and getting out of your shells. The new state board was also voted on Monday afternoon and was later announced at the banquet that evening. Which was followed by evening activities, including a dance, karaoke, National Guard inflatables, a Bagg-o Tournament and a study room. Tuesday morning, region meetings were held to elect a new region board. Heil and Huffman stepped down from their positions on the board as Region Rep. and Region President. Following Region meetings, was the Children s Miracle Network Donations. Members who attended the state convention also voted to become part of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. This means that the state council will fall under the SDHSAA umbrella, and they will help fund the state convention. Heil received recognition for serving on the state board along with receiving All-State Student Council recognition. As a whole council, Lemmon once again received the Outstanding Student Council award. It was great to achieve our whole year goal to get Outstanding Student Council. And it was great to achieve my personal goal and be recognized at the state level. The highlight of the trip was going to the Tropical Smoothie Café with my peeps. But the best part was getting to better myself as a leader, stated Heil. Above: Brandon, is pictured with his All State Student Council plaque and State Board Recognition Certificate. The annual Northwest Area Schools Academic Olympics invited students from several different schools to compete in a variety of high school subjects. Senior, Krista Miller added, This year s Academic Olympics went better for me than it did last year. Lemmon had five quiz-bowl teams: freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and overall quiz-bowl. However, none of the teams made it past the first round even though some were close matches. The students placed as followed: Dillon Reede 2 nd in English II, Krista Miller 4 th in English IV, Sage Peterson 5 th in Physics and 4 th in Algebra II, Jimal Storm in Algebra I, Anna Beer 2 nd in Algebra I, Amanda Riley 5 th in Senior Math, Jessica Colville in American History, Jaret Woodward 2 nd in World History, Krista Miller 5 th in American Government, and Wyatt Huffman in American Government. Both high school and 7th grade came together to sing a joint piece showcasing the difference in age range with their voices. They sang Viva La Musica which means Long Live Music in Spanish. After choir performed came the awards and senior night. Finally, the bands began to play the selections Director Minh had chosen for them.
