4 RACE REVIEW RECORDS FALL AS MOSINET, ROZA WIN 2018 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON Ethiopia s Mosinet Geremew won the 2018 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon with a course record of 2h:04m:00s in one of the most thrilling finishes in marathon history. The then 27 year-old, who entered the race just days before, sprinted across the finish line followed by four more runners within eight seconds. Debutant Leul Gebresilase took second just two seconds later (2:04:02), while defending champion Tamirat Tola finished third in 2:04:06. Such was the quality of the race, Tola beat his own 2017 winning course record time by five seconds yet still only scraped on to the podium. In all, seven runners clocked sub 2: a unique result in world marathon history with six of them no slower than 2:04:15. Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and under the aegis of the Dubai Sports Council, the 19th edition of the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon once again had athletics writers scurrying through the record books as the elites produced a catalogue of world-class performances. In almost perfect weather conditions, the leading group ran a very consistent pace. After a half marathon split time of 61:36, the world record of the time (2:02:57) was still in reach at 30k, which was passed in 1:27:35. However, after the last pacemaker dropped out, the pace fell and the athletes focused on winning the US$200,000 first prize. Five runners were still in contention when 6 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON

5 the group entered the home straight but in the end it was the runner who entered the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon last who came in first. The women s race also produced recordbreaking results as Roza Dereje clocked a women s course record of 2:19:17 and with it became the seventh fastest woman in marathon history. The Ethiopian broke away from a leading group of four in the final mile of the race and for the first time in marathon history four women clocked sub-2:20 in one race. Ethiopia s Feyse Tadese took second with 2:19:30, followed by Yebrgual Melese (2:19:36) and defending champion Worknesh Degefa in 2:19:53. Again, such was the standard of the competition, defending champion Degefa smashed her personal best by more than two minutes yet still missed out on the top three. While Ethiopia dominated the Marathon, in the wheelchair races it was a Swiss double with Silver Bullet Marcel Hug winning the men s title (1h:25m:14s) and compatriot Sandra Graf taking the women s gold in 1:45:13. I was happy to run at the pacemaker s pace for the opening half, said Geremew after receiving his trophy from HE Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Rumaithy, President of the General Authority For Sports, and Julian Wynter, Standard Chartered Bank UAE CEO. It was a good race with strong competition over a good course. When did I think I could win? I only thought about winning when I had one kilometre to go. A record field of more than 30,000 runners entered the event, which included races at 10km and 4km. The winner in the men s 10km Road Race was Samir Jouaher of Morocco (29m:31s) ahead of Ethiopians Birnanu Birhanu and Beyene Amsalu, while South Africa s Gerda Steyn (34:35s) took first place with Myriam Lamure of France and Colombia s Jinna Gar in second and third places respectively. In addition to Standard Chartered as title sponsor, the 2018 Dubai Marathon was supported by the Dubai Sports Council, adidas, Dubai Eye 103.8FM, Masafi Natural Water, Dubai Holding, Dubai Police and the RTA. 8 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI DUBAI MARATHON

All results will be posted on the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon website on race day. The address is DRINKS AND DRINKS STATIONS Dehydration is the biggest problem that marathon runners have to overcome. In a hard race on a hot and humid day, up to four litres of fluid can be lost through sweating and exhalation. It is important for runners to keep well hydrated. It should also be noted that overhydration can also be an issue. It is just as important for runners not to overhydrate reducing sodium levels. Isotonic drinks supplied by Gatorade will be available at six stations. Drinks will be provided at the 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 35km stations. Water supplied by Aquafina will be available at every 2.5km starting from 5km with the last drinks available at 40km and the finish. Around 100, ml plastic bottles of water have been supplied to meet the needs of the Marathon. In addition to water, many of the elite runners prefer to drink their own special drinks during the race. These special bottles are collected on Thursday night, kept in secure and cool conditions and placed on the route at the drink stations before the race. 17

14 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Guye Adola ran a sensational marathon debut in Berlin in 2017, clocking an unofficial world debut record of 2:03:46. Taking second place, he came closer to beating Kenya s superstar Eliud Kipchoge than anyone else since Adola was even leading the Olympic Champion until around the 40km mark before Kipchoge finally managed to overhaul him and win by just 14 seconds. Adola had shown his potential before with a number of strong half marathon races. In 2014 he established a 59:06 course record at the New Delhi Half Marathon a record which still stands today and is also Adola s personal best. In the same year, he won a bronze medal at the World Half Marathon Championships. While Adola was the Marathon Newcomer of the Year in 2017, he suffered injury and health problems in After finishing below par in 17th position in London, he had to withdraw from the Frankfurt Marathon in October 2018 and will be hoping to bounce back in Dubai. 15 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Lemi Berhanu isn t the only athlete in this year s field whose best performances have come in Dubai. The winner in 2015 with 2:05:28, he finished runner-up the following year in what remains his personal best of 2:04:33. He can also run fast elsewhere and, like an increasing number of elite runners, has prospered at the marathon distance in China, winning the Hengshui title with 2:08:51 last year and in Xiamen in 2:08:27. The 25-year-old has achieved much in his career so far including two championship appearances in the marathon, firstly at the 2015 World Championships and then the Rio Olympics the following year. Unfortunately, neither race produced a distinguished result and he dropped out, as did many, in the extreme conditions of the Boston Marathon last April. Berhanu is clearly a man who reserves his best for Dubai. Daunting though the marathon can be, even for elite runners, no-one could accuse Kelkile Gezahegn of avoiding the distance once he embarked on a distance running career. He made a big impact in his debut season of 2016 on the Chinese road circuit, winning all four marathons entered with a best of 2:08:56 from Hefei in November of that year. Rotterdam and Frankfurt have been his happiest hunting grounds: the 22-year-old won in Frankfurt last October after finishing second the previous year. His personal best remains the 2:05:56 for third in Rotterdam last April after sixth place the year before. Kelkile Gezahegn also has six wins from as many marathon races in China. This was a sensational course record and the fastest time ever run on South American soil. The 26-year-old Saina is making a habit of strong performances at debut distances: Saina ran 62:03 for 13th in the Berkane Half Marathon in Morocco on April 1, also last year. He set another personal best at 10km on his own Kenyan roads with 30:07 in Kabernet in the Rift Valley on November 11. Dubai will offer the chance for Saina to show if he can maintain this improvement on a top flight stage. Seboka Dibaba has produced consistent results in the marathon for the past six years without being able to surpass his best performance of 2:06:17 in the 2012 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon where the Ethiopian finished ninth. However, he has placed high in the standings on a regular basis with a runner-up spot in Mumbai in 2016 and twice finishing third in Seoul (2013) and Paris (2015). Most Significant Results In 2018 he recovered from finishing down the field in Marrakech to take second in 2:14:35 in Beijing in September. Born and raised in Eritrea he had to run up to 20km daily to get to school, which was at an altitude of 2,400m. After competing for Eritrea in the 2004 World Junior Cross- Country Championships in Brussels in 2004, Abraham took the courageous step to leave the team and travelled to Switzerland to start a new life. Although it took him ten years before being granted Swiss citizenship, he was eligible to compete at the European Championships in Zurich 2014, where he finished ninth and helped Switzerland taking a bronze medal in the marathon team competition. Two years later in 2016 Abraham was the best European runner in the Olympic Marathon with a seventh place and won gold at the European Half Marathon Championships. It was also in 2016 when he clocked his personal best of 2:06:40 in Seoul. Much of his marathon racing has been in Asia, with wins in Chunchon in South Korea in 2016 and a solid performance in Shanghai in 2017 when he placed seventh in 2:10:54. His most recent marathon was back in Chunchon for second place in 2:11:27 in October 2018 after taking second in Ottawa in May and breaking 2:10. 17 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Yenew Alamirew moved up to the marathon distance a year ago when he ran his debut in Dubai and was among the leaders at a 2:03 pace until close to the 30km mark. Although the Ethiopian could not quite match the pace in the final section he still finished in a very credible debut time of 2:08:56 taking eighth place. Alamirew remained focused on the marathon in 2018, running only one more race - in the Amsterdam Marathon he clocked 2:10:35 and after a period of recovery he started preparing for the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. On the flat course his goal will be to improve his personal best. Alamirew was a 5,000m specialist on the track in previous years, posting a superb personal best of 12:48.77 at this distance. When he is able to transform this sort of speed to the marathon distance, he will undoubtedly achieve worldclass results. Morihashi is the epitome of the Japanese distance runner who concentrates on road racing and the marathon above all. Time and again newcomers to the distance have achieved outstanding results and victories in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. Getaneh Molla is among the next group of Ethiopian debutants who could have an immediate impact in the marathon. So far the 25 year-old has focused on the 5,000m. Molla won the Ethiopian Championships at this distance four times in a row and last summer he improved his personal best to 12:59.58 in Brussels. However, he has shown his talent at longer distances with a couple of strong half marathon performances. He was fifth in the World Half Marathon Championships in 2018 and won the Riyadh Half Marathon, where he collected more than US$250,000 in prizemoney. Molla should be ready to produce a good performance when he runs his first marathon on the very fast Dubai course. While her personal best in the half marathon at the start of 2017 was 70:33, she improved this time over the year by more than four minutes to 66:19. The 2011 World bronze medallist in the marathon brings a wealth of experience to her second appearance in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon - Cherop made her Dubai debut in 2012 finishing a creditable seventh in 2:22:39. That was a year after the 34-year-old Kenyan took the bronze medal in the marathon at the World Championships in Daegu in South Korea. Cherop is used to the pressures of top marathons, having set her personal best of 2:22:28 for second place in Berlin in 2012 and finished third and sixth on the tough Boston course in 2011 and 2014 respectively. She has consistently run in the mid-2:20s in her career and also shown speed over shorter distances. While her best for the half marathon is 67:08 for runner-up at the 2011 New Delhi event, she showed she still retains speed in her legs with 68:22 for fourth place in Paris last March. Although she had previously competed in the marathon, her personal best of 2:34:36 was nothing of international significance. That changed in 2018 as Debele improved to 2:29:45 in Mumbai, a race notorious for its difficult weather conditions, before she Two strong performances in the marathon in 2018 point to Mekasha rising further up the marathon charts on her Dubai debut. After winning the Padua title in 2:29:18 in April, she improved on that personal best with victory at Hengshui in China on September 29. Her time of 2:25:57 marked a massive improvement compared to 2017, when finishing fourth in Porto in Portugal with 2:46:08. Although the Ethiopian won the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in 2014, sliced another couple of minutes off her PB in Hamburg, where she took second in 2:25:28. On the flat Dubai course Debele is a candidate for another major improvement. The Ethiopian grew up around 100km north of Addis Ababa and at the age of twelve her talent became obvious when she won all the races at her school from 100m to 5km. She has now achieved this and Dubai should provide the ideal stage to take her rise to another level. As with an increasing number of the elite East African runners these days, Tsega has raced with success in China including victory in the 2017 Hanzhou Marathon. Until last year Tigist Assefa was a committed track runner, competing for Ethiopia at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in the 800m. The only road running experience of note on her career records is in Dubai, where she finished runner-up in the Dubai women s 10k on November 16th last year, clocking 34:35. She had broken two minutes for 800m, which put her in the top flight of women two-lap runners, setting her best of 1:59.24 in Lausanne in July, In the same year Tigist finished fourth in the 800m at the African Championships in Marrakech. If she makes the grade in the marathon on her second appearance in Dubai this month, she will not be the first track international runner to make a successful conversion to the distance.
