4 RACE REVIEW TOLA, DEGEFA LEAD ETHIOPIAN CLEAN SWEEP IN DUBAI Ethiopia s Tamirat Tola and Worknesh Degefa led an Ethiopian clean-sweep at the 2017 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon today (Friday) as Kenenisa Bekele s world record bid fell apart in the opening few strides. Tola took advantage after pre-race favourite Bekele fell to the ground at the start gun after being tripped in an incident described by the Race Referee as unintentional contact. It was a crushing blow for Bekele after setting his sights on Dennis Kimetto s World Record. After falling at the start, the three-time Olympic gold medallist found himself back down the field and never really recovered as the leaders accelerated away at world record breaking pace leaving Bekele to drop out at around 23k clutching his left calf. I came to Dubai to do something special however it was not to be, said a disappointed Bekele. I fell down at the start and got hurt. I tried to run, but it didn t work. I just hope to come back to Dubai one day and show what I can do here. The early fast pace with the pack of a half dozen as much as 45 seconds up on world record pace at halfway told in the latter stages as Tola eased home in a new course record time of 2:04:11, more than two minutes ahead of compatriots Mule Wasihun (2:06:46) and Sissay Lemma (2:08:04). The pace was very fast at the start, said Tola after receiving his trophy from HH Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai International Marine Club and Julian Wynter, Standard Chartered Bank CEO UAE. The 15k time (43.26) was much too fast but when we saw 6 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON

5 that Kenenisa was well behind, I became more confident. I m happy to win but I think I could have run under In the women s race, Marathon debutante Worknesh Degefa won the $200,000 prize at the first attempt crossing the line in 2:22:36 the fourth fastest time in the event s history with Shure Demise in second (2:22:57) and Yebrgual Melese taking third (2:23:13). A superlative half-marathoner, Degefa put the extra training distance to good use by running away from all but Demise, one of the pre-race favourites. Demise managed to claw back some of the deficit in the penultimate kilometre, but when she saw Degefa still running strongly, she was forced to settle for second. Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and held under the aegis of the Dubai Sports Council, the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon saw around 30,000 runners compete in the Marathon, the 10km Road Race and the 4km Fun Run. In the wheelchair category, there was a battle royal between Spain s Rafa Botello and Patrick Monahan of Ireland with both men fighting it out all the way to the finish line. In the end it was the Spaniard who emerged triumphant on his Dubai debut storming home in 1:31:19, just three seconds ahead of Monahan who was also racing on the Dubai roads for the first time. Third place went to defending champion JohnBoy Smith of Great Britain (1:36:25). The 10km Road Race saw Samir Jouaher of Morocco successfully defend his crown (28:34) with Ethiopia s Wuletaw Adane in second (28:57) and Morocco s Ahmed Tamri third (29:27). The women s 10km Road Race saw victory go to the UAE s Alia Mohammed in 33:07 ahead of Ethiopian Berhan Aregawi (33:32) and third placed Amanda Bohlin of Sweden (36:53). As well as Standard Chartered as title sponsor, the Dubai Marathon 2017 was supported by the Dubai Sports Council, adidas, Dubai Eye 103.8FM, Sport 360, Masafi, Dubai Holding, Dubai Police and the RTA. 8 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI DUBAI MARATHON

The address is DRINKS AND DRINKS STATIONS Dehydration is the biggest problem that marathon runners have to overcome. In a hard race on a hot and humid day, up to four litres of fluid can be lost through sweating and exhalation. It is important for runners to keep well hydrated. It should also be noted that overhydration can also be an issue. It is just as important for runners not to overhydrate reducing sodium levels. Isotonic drinks supplied by Isostar will be available at six stations. Drinks will be provided at the 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 35km stations. Water supplied by Masafi will be available at every 2.5km starting from 5km with the last drinks available at 40km and the finish. Around 100, ml and 500ml plastic bottles of water have been supplied to meet the needs of the Marathon. In addition to water, many of the elite runners prefer to drink their own special drinks during the race. These special bottles are collected on Thursday night, kept in secure and cool conditions and placed on the route at the drink stations before the race. 17

The Ethiopian had entered the race as the eighth fastest runner on the start list and was not considered to be among the major favourites. However he celebrated his biggest career win so far, when he beat a high-class field including superstar Kenenisa Bekele. Tola also broke the five yearold course record by twelve seconds, clocking 2:04:11. He then confirmed his great shape when he took the silver medal in the marathon at the World Championships in London in August. In between the two marathons he ran his first sub one hour half marathon, winning in Prague with 59:37. In addition to Tokyo, he has also won in Florence in 2012 and consistently placed highly in marathons. His fourth place in Shanghai in 2015 is the only occasion he has finished outside 2:10 for the distance. 15 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Sisay Lemma returns to the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon for the fourth year in a row and enjoys a fine record in the city. Placing fifth on his Dubai debut in 2015 he then clocked his PB of 2:05:16 a year later when he took fourth place. Last year Lemma improved to third and if he can continue with this pattern he will be runner-up this time and win in He definitely has the potential to win a major marathon having triumphed in Vienna and Frankfurt. Before moving to Addis Ababa Lemma lived in Chacki which is in the Oromia region from where a large number of world-class runners come among them Kenenisa Bekele. I heard about them when I was at school and of course I knew about Haile Gebrselassie. However I had no ambitions myself at that time to become a runner, said Lemma, who grew up on his parents farm at altitude. Sisay Jisa returned to his best when he competed in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon just 12 months ago finishing fourth in 2:08:09 with the second fastest marathon time of his career. He ran a great debut back in 2012, finishing third in Paris with 2:06:27, a time which remains his personal best. Following that performance he failed to achieve another sub 2:10 time until Dubai 2017 and returning to this renowned fast course he will be eager to build on his near-podium performance of last year Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 3rd 2:08: Chicago Marathon 4th 2:11: Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 4th 2:05: Berlin Marathon 4th 2:06: Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 5th 2:07: Vienna City Marathon 1st 2:07: Frankfurt Marathon 1st 2:06:26 BIB: LEMMA Sisay Lemma Date of Birth: 12 December, 1990 Marathon: 2:05:16 (2016) Half Marathon: 62:06 (2015) BIB: JISA Sisay Jisa Date of Birth: 29 November, 1982 Marathon: 2:06:27 (2012) Half Marathon: 64:33 (2011) 2017 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 4th 2:08: Rome Marathon 2nd 2:11: Guangzhou, CHN 1st 2:11: Paris Marathon 3rd 2:06:27 This will be Birhanu s fourth appearance in Dubai with his best performance so far coming in 2014 when he finished a highly-creditable third place in what remains his lifetime best of 2:05:49, while he also produced a solid time of 2:08:56 for eighth place the following year. His marathon schedule shows he likes to keep busy with frequent competition bringing him three marathon wins: Daegu in South Korea and, seven weeks later, Ottawa, both in 2015 and the Beijing title in His powers of recovery after running a high-class marathon are notable since his victories are not the only times Birhanu has produced top form in quick succession: the 30-year-old Ethiopian finished runner-up in Rome 2013 and then Prague with just under two months in between. In 2013 he ran five marathons in all and just one less in Dubai s perennially fast course should offer an ideal opportunity for the Kenyan to regain the form he showed in finishing sixth in Frankfurt in 2014 with a time of 2:07:29. Korir s performances since then have been solid rather than spectacular but he showed he could regain form when finishing second in Seoul in 2:09:01 in 2016 after running well outside 2:10 in Marrakech and Geneva earlier that year Beijing Marathon 2nd 2:11: Daegu Marathon 1st 2:07: Ottawa Marathon 1st 2:08: Beijing Marathon 1st 2:10: Rome Marathon 2nd 2:08: Prague Marathon 2nd 2:09: Amsterdam Marathon 2nd 2:06:06 BIB: BIRHANU Girmay Birhanu Date of Birth: 27 January, 1987 Marathon: 2:05:49 (2014) Half Marathon: 61:08 (2014) BIB: KORIR Ronald Korir Date of Birth: 1991 Country: Kenya Marathon: 2:07:26 (2014) Half Marathon: 62:54 (2013) 2017 Madrid Marathon 3rd 2:13: Seoul Marathon 2nd 2:09: Frankfurt Marathon 6th 2:07: Paderborn Half Marathon, GER 3rd 62:54 28 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON

16 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Twice a winner of the Cape Town Marathon in consecutive years, beginning with what remains his personal best of 2:08:41 in 2016, Ethiopia s Asefa Mengstu achieved highly creditable results in 2017 at both the marathon and half the distance. He sharpened his shorter distance speed in preparation for Dubai with his fastest ever half marathon of 59:54 to finish fourth in New Delhi in November Earlier in the year he showed solid form with a seventh place finish in the London Marathon in April and has shown he has made fine progress since his 2:19:40 for 11th place in Valencia in The Ethiopian may be short on marathon experience but emerged with credit from his one race at the distance to date, finishing second in Seoul with 2:09:26 in November South Korea is where he also ran a personal best for the half marathon, six weeks prior to his marathon debut, taking second place at Incheon in 62:58. The Ethiopian maintains a busy marathon schedule racing three times at the distance last year as well as in He has won the Beijing title on the last two occasions and improved his personal best to 2:09:00 with third place in Prague in May 2017, helping Ethiopia make a clean sweep of the podium. This will be his third appearance in Dubai, having first run here six years ago and improved his marathon best by almost two-and-a-half minutes in the meantime. Joseph Kiptum switched to road running in 2009 after a brief career on the track. On his marathon debut in Daegu, South Korea he ran a fine 2:10:07 for fifth place. He then produced his best performance when he won the Hannover Marathon in Germany in 2012 with a personal best of 2:09:56 that remains his fastest marathon so far and he will surely come to Dubai aiming to regain that level of performance. While he has not run a marathon in the past few years he has shown very promising form winning all four of his international road races in the past two years. Kiptum is a very consistent half marathon runner and has clocked sub-62 minutes on ten occasions. Winning four of his half marathons so far, he made an impressive debut with victory by one second in Berlin in March On his fourth attempt at the distance he improved to what remains his personal best to win the first of his two New Delhi titles in 59:20. Also impressive was his win at Ras Al Khaimah in February 2016, beating the 2015 New York Marathon champion Stanley Biwott in a sprint finish in 60:40. Returning to New Delhi in November 2017, he retained the title in fine style. For 2018 he is in the start list and could pose a serious threat to his rivals. A 5,000m specialist on the track, Alamirew has a superb personal best of 12:48.77 at this distance. If he can transform his potential to the marathon he could run a great debut, although he has not run more than 10 miles in competition so far. However, he will take some encouragement from the fact that debutants have caused upsets time and again, especially in Dubai. From 2012 to 2014 the winner of this race was a debutant with all three men running world-class times of sub 2:05. Leul arrives in Dubai bearing a famous Ethiopian name although the spelling is not quite the same with Leul being no relation to the great Haile Gebrselassie who himself won the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon title on three occasions. Leul ran the eighth fastest half marathon in the world in 2017, which could herald the start of a fine marathon career. Finishing runner-up in 59:18 in Valencia in October last year marked him out as a runner capable of springing a surprise on his marathon debut. He improved his half marathon time by well over a minute from his performance in Yangzhou in China two years previously. 19 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE WOMEN BIOGRAPHIES ELITE RUNNERS ELITE WOMEN BIOGRAPHIES Aselefech Mergia is a three-time winner and the current course record holder of the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. No other woman has more wins in Dubai than Mergia and she remains unbeaten in this prestigious IAAF Gold Label Road Race. In 2012 she won Dubai for the second time in a row, taking a highly competitive race by just three seconds with a course record of 2:19:31. This time also remains her personal best and her only sub 2:20 result so far. She came very close to breaking the barrier again at her third Dubai triumph three years ago when In a thrilling sprint finish she edged out Kenya s Gladys Cherono by one second in a winning time of 2:20:02. It was a perfect marathon comeback for Mergia who had given birth to her daughter Sena in July 2013 and had not run the distance for two and a half years. After Dubai 2015 Mergia achieved top results in major marathons although she did not manage another win. It s been seven years since her first Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon so it s a warm welcome back for Feyse Tadese on her return. When she entered in 2011 she did so with a personal best of just below 2:37 and was more or less unknown in international road running. By the end of the race, she had improved that by more than six minutes and comes to the start line in Dubai as a different calibre of athlete. The best phase of her career so far began in early 2012, when she 2017 Prague Marathon 5th 2:26: Berlin Marathon 2nd 2:20: London Marathon 4th 2:21: Paris Marathon 1st 2:21: Shanghai Marathon 1st 2:23: Seoul Marathon 1st 2:23: WCH Half Marathon/Kavarna, BUL 2nd 68:56 won the Seoul Marathon. She then triumphed in her next two marathons, in Shanghai and Paris, where she improved to 2:21:06. However her winning streak came to an end at the World Championships in 2013 when in hot weather conditions she failed to finish in Moscow. Tadese bounced back in 2014 with a fourth place in London and a PB of 2:20:27 in Berlin, where she took second. Two years later she broke through the 2:20 barrier when she clocked her PB in Dubai, taking third place. Dibaba won the Chicago Marathon in 2014 and took the Xiamen Marathon for the second year in a row in It was there where she tied her personal best, breaking 2:20 for a second time. Worknesh Degefa sprang a surprise in last year s race, winning on her marathon debut in 2:22:36 against strong opposition in the shape of Ethiopian compatriots Shure Demise as runner-up and Yebrgual Melese. The signs were highly promising going into the 2017 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon following a run of strong results at the half marathon distance. Her best for that distance is 66:14, set in finishing second in Prague in 2016 and the 27-year-old has broken 68 minutes on three occasions, including victories in Lisbon (2014) and Prague (2015). She has maintained a busy schedule over the shorter road distances in 2017, winning in 69:19 in Olomouc in the Czech Republic in June after a third place in Istanbul in April. Beginning her 2017 marathon year with Dubai and ending it with Shanghai, she finished third in Vienna in April. She had already caused a surprise in Shanghai in 2016, when taking almost five minutes off her personal best to beat the Kenyan Margaret Agai by just two seconds. Sutume Asefa made a strong impression on her marathon debut when she ran 2:24:00 for fourth place in Dubai in The Ethiopian has been among a number of elite runners who have chosen the race for their first experience of the marathon. She has continued to finish prominently since her debut and nine weeks after Dubai she finished second in Rotterdam with 2:28:04. Her racing record suggests she likes to return to familiar ground and this will be her third appearance in Dubai. A very experienced marathon runner Yinli He comes to Dubai, hoping to make the most of the very fast course and to get back to her best. Yinli He was sixth in the highly contested Asian Games in 2014 and then clocked her PB at the Chongqing Marathon in China in the following year with 2:27:35.
