ABSA NMMU EP Cross Country Championships 2011 Ischke Senekal (18) has proven to be a top athlete in South Africa by winning the gold medal in discus with a distance of 9,9m. This was not only her personal best, but it bettered the EP U/19 and the EP U/23 discus records. She also achieved a th place in shot put at the same event. In addition, Ischke has bettered the SA Schools record in discus by taking the gold medal at the SA High School Championships with a magnificent throw of 7.91m and taking a silver medal in the shot put with 12,56m. At the SA Junior Championships (in very wet weather) she also won gold in the shot put and silver in the discus. Ischke also participated at the Southern Region Senior Track and Field Championships where she won a silver medal in discus (5,68m) and came th in shotput (13,09m). Ischke intends furthering her studies and athletics career at NMMU next year, where she hopes to fulfil her dream to become a world student champion and Olympian. 2 ROAD RUNNING NEWS We re already nearly seven months down in 2011, and only five more to go. But one thing I ve noticed is that the attendance of our road running athletes at all races if increasing and that the athletes are really training hard, as I can see people running better times and some PB s. Well done and keep it up, especially now that the winter is on us. I would like to congratulate the athletes who took part in the Two Oceans and completed the ultra marathon as well as the half marathon and to those who did the Comrades, congratulations on finishing the Ultimate Human Race. Please take note that for an athlete to be entered into a race sponsored by the club, the following process needs to be followed. Not adhering to the following can lead to not being entered into the race. Athletes not running a race that the club has paid for, will not be entered for future races until he/she paid the money back to the club. To be entered into a race that the club sponsors an athlete needs to inform the chairperson by sms. The closing date for you to sms the chairperson will be a week before the date of the race. An sms with your name, surname, ID and license number need to be forwarded to Andre Barnard on No club transport will be available for athletes until further notice. Modern Pentathlon Star (shooting, fencing, horseracing, swimming & running) Jon-Paul Raper was selected for the French Open Modern Pentathlon Championships held on 25 and 26 June 2011 in Paris, France. Jon Paul will also do some additional training in Europe (Italy and England) prior to his participation in the Africa Modern Pentathlon Championships and Olympic qualification competition in the Africa Championships from 17 to 25 July 2011in Cairo, Egypt. Fastest relay team in SA 2011 South African Senior Track and Field Champs The EP men s x 100m relay team is the fastest relay team in the country as proven at the SA Senior Athletics championships in Durban on 10 April The team consists of all ABSA NMMU athletics club members. Eastern Province is still the home of elite sprinters coached by Magda Botha and Chris Doubell (ABSA NMMU) and achieved the gold medal with an excellent time of 0.5s. 6 ASA team for the CAA AFRICAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS in Bostwana The ABSA NMMU Athletics club had three national representatives in this prestigious team. Ischke Senekal a gold medal in discus at 9.90m a personal best and bettered the EP U/19 & E.P. U/23 discus record. Jeanne van Dyk a silver medal for pole vault at 3.35m Magdalene Louw came 5th in hammer throw at 8.02m These athletes and students have proven themselves this year by winning medals at the EP and the SA Junior Championships. 7 Name ABSA of NMMU dept/unit/centre ATHLETICS to go CLUB here Highest honours for ABSA NMMU coaches Four of the ABSA NMMU athletics club coaches have received the highest honours by being selected to represent South African teams internationally in Magda Botha (coach) and Bradley Agnew (manager for males) were selected for the national junior side as coach for ASA Team for the CAA AFRICAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS in Botswana during May ABSA NMMU Athletics club is very proud of these three coaches, as well as Kobus Van Zyl who was selected as Team Coach for the Disabled Team that participated at the IPC World Championships for Disabled in Christchurch, New Zealand during January Kobus van Zyl Coach ABSA NMMU Athletic Club Achievements by some of his athletes coached during the 2011 season as follows: Michael Louwrens (Disabled Athlete) ABSA NMMU Participated at IPC World Championships Christchurch January Won bronze medal in shot put with a PB of 13,71m. Kobus van Zyl Kobus Boshoff Coach ABSA NMMU Athletic Club Kobus Boshoff has been coaching athletics for 1 years, specializing in long sprints, hurdles and middle distances. He attended a Level 2 IAAF (International Athletics Association) coaches course in 2009, in which he achieved the top class position. He has subsequently presented coaches courses and is currently coaching some athletes of ABSA NMMU and Nico Malan High School in Humansdorp. He has been the EP Senior team coach for the past four years and was the NMMU Individual Coach of the Year in Boshoff is also the Vice-Chairperson of the EP Coaches Committee and the secretary of the EP Track & Field Selection Committee. Kobus Boshoff He was recently appointed as team coach to the SA Youth Team which competed against ten other African countries in the Southern Region Youth (u17) Track & Field Championships in Namibia, May During these Championships, Team SA bagged a total of 50 medals of which 23 were gold, making them one of the most successful national teams ever to represent South Africa. Bradley Agnew Coach ABSA NMMU Athletic Club Former SA national athlete Chairman of EP track and field - Been in this position of 18 months 2011 EPA track and field Team manager to SA seniors Team Manager for SA Junior team to African Juniors held in Botswana Involved with torship programme for coaches ASA level II Coach. Bradley Agnew Participated professionally on the athletics circuit around the world where he participated in the World Champs. Represented SA for more than 6 years after coming through the ranks as SA Junior Champ and World Students Silver medallist. 8 Facelift for stadium track The re-surfacing of the NMMU athletics track has been approved and the process will start in September this year. Please take note that no events will be allowed on the inside of the stadium from the 15 th of September 2011 to the end of this year. Organisers of events that were provisionally booked during this period should take note and make alternative arrangements.

Scholars could enter through their schools without payment but the entry forms should be handed in or sent to the EP Office before the closing date of 05 August : Senior No late entries will be accepted. Senior registered athletes in our club may also enter for free if the club entry form is handed in at the EP Office or Athletics office before the closing date. 10 GENERAL INFORMATION: Race day is Saturday 13 August 2011 The race will take place at the Xerox NMMU Athletics Stadium Organised in accordance with the rules and regulations of ASA and EPA. Athletes must run in Official club colours with licence numbers on the back and the race number on front of vest. Athletes who are not licence members of a club affiliated to ASA must purchase a temporary licence number of R25 to be worn on back of vest. The race committee reserves the right to accepted or reject any entry. The results will comprise of time and position only. Appeals in 1 hour after announcing results of race accompany by a R200 appeal fee Entry Fee R10 per senior athlete and R25 for temp licence nr. Local Entries may be handed in at Brian Bands, The Footballer, Action Sports and EPA Office. The Closing date of all entries is Wednesday 10 August No entry will be accepted without payment or full entry details. Registration and late entries will be from 07:00 at the start on race day. Sticker and race Numbers will be available on the morning from 07:00 at the NMMU stadium Entry fees are non-refundable.
