We are looking forward to see you in Penghu. There is a little story that I have participated three IRONMAN races in 22 days in the middle of this year. I thought I could not make it at the beginning. Finally, I realized that the moment of the registration is the toughest after I finished all the races. Once you registered, you must trust yourself that you can finish! Be more confident. We are all waiting for your arrival at 2018 IRONMAN Taiwan and wish you enjoy the trip in Penghu. Have a pleasant journey! See you in Penghu, Renny Ling CEO, Taiwan Triathlon Co. Ltd.

4 MESSAGE FROM RACE REFEREE We are using the IRONMAN s Global Competition Rules 2018, and this is a NON Drafting Event. There are a number of exciting changes to this year s event as well as some key changes that you need to make sure you are aware of. In particular, IRONMAN Asia have worked closely with Taiwan Triathlon Co. Ltd. to ensure there is close alignment and consistency in IRONMAN s Global Competition Rules Some of the key rules are: The draft zone will remain at 12 meters long, measured from leading edge of front wheel of front cyclist to front wheel of trailing cyclist. An athlete must immediately move to the side upon entering the draft zone of another athlete when passing (i.e. no slipstreaming) and must continuously progress through the draft zone. A maximum of 25 seconds will be allowed for each pass. Race Penalty Cards being used are Yellow (a Sixty (60) Second Time Penalty), Blue (Time Penalty - Five (5) Minute Penalty) and Red (Disqualification). Any accumulation of three blue cards will result in a disqualification (Red Card). Athletes who receive a Yellow/Blue card must serve the penalty at the penalty tent at Transition Area 2 after finishing the Bike Course. Athlete who receive the Yellow/Blue card and does not serve the penalty will result in a Disqualification. The cut-off temperatures where athletes will be allowed to wear wetsuits are up to and including 21.9C / 71.5F for Pro Athletes and 24.5C / 76.1F for Age Group Athletes. To minimise the possibility of infringing the rules on race day and avoiding a visit to the Penalty Box, please observe the following: Ride on the right side of the bike lane Keep 12 meters between yourself and the cyclist in front of you front wheel to front wheel Pass on the left of the cyclist in front (never on the right) Complete your pass within 25-seconds If passed, drop back immediately 12 meters and ensure you have dropped back the full 12 meters before re-passing Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers and officials with courtesy and consideration as failure to do so is Unsportsmanlike Conduct. infringements. A Technical Official s ruling is final in the case of Drafting, Blocking, and Illegal Pass infringements (Judgment Calls) and these are not subject to either protest or appeal. Following are the most common rule infringements: Blocking Riding on the left side of an athlete without passing or riding on the left hand side of the bike lane when clear of other athletes Drafting Following a leading cyclist closer than 12 meters and failing to pass in 25 seconds OR after being passed, failing to drop back 12 meters before re-passing Illegal Pass Passing on the right Littering - Discarding items, e.g. tyres, bidons, gel wrappers etc., on any part of the course except within sight of an Aid Station Helmet Always have your chin strap securely fastened when moving with your bike A Technical Official will advise you of any time Penalty by calling your number, advising you of the nature of the infringement and showing you a BLUE Card. It will then be your responsibility to serve the 5 minute time Penalty at the next Penalty Box. NOTE that any 3 infringements across the course during the event will result in a Disqualification. Other infringements including: offensive and unsportsmanlike behaviour, public personal toilet, outside assistance and the use of electronic equipment are also against the rules and any ONE of these infringements may result in a Disqualification. I sincerely hope you have a great race, enjoy the experience, and achieve your IRONMAN goals. 18 SWIM COURSE 3.8KM Cut off time 2 Hour 20 minutes after individual start time. View maps on the official website>> COURSE DESCRIPTION Athletes will enjoy an inviting 3.8km swim in the beautiful waters of Penghu surrounded by the island. The swim is a two lap, out and back, course. First, athletes will swim out, keeping the buoy line on their left side at all times during the swim portion, and U turn at the 950m point and the swim back towards the shore. Once at the shore, athletes will exit the water up the stairs, make a U turn on the sidewalk, and return to the water to begin the second lap. Upon entering the water, the athletes will repeat the same course as the first lap, and once the second lap is completed athletes will again exit the water up the stairs and follow the course into transition. WARM UP SWIM Professional Athletes Professional Athletes will be able to warm up directly in front of their start area. The warm up area will be accessible after 5:30am once the Race Director has confirmed it is safe to do so. All Professional athletes will need to exit the water by 5:45am or once advised by the Race Director. Age Groupers Age Group Athletes will be able to warm up at the outside of swim start area of the beach. No swimming is allowed directly in front of the Start Zones due to high water safety traffic for safety reasons. Age Groupers will be able to warm up from approx. 5:30am once the Race Director has determined it is safe to do so. They will need to exit the water by 5:45am and be ready in their Start Zones. Please follow the direction of water safety at all times during warm up.

19 IRONMAN SWIM START Professional Athletes Beach Start via wave start Professional Athletes will be set off in separate male and female wave starts from the beach. This start is located in front of the Age Group Start Zones. Age Groupers Beach Start via ROLLING START" This year s event will incorporate a Rolling Swim Start, allowing age group athletes to self-seed themselves into Start Zones prior to the race start. Each Start Zone will align to a different expected swim time with all Start Zones located on the beach. There will be three different Start Zones to choose from depending on an athlete s expected swim time. These zones include; Zone 1. Under 1 hour 10 minutes (70 minutes) Zone 2. 1 hour 11 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes Zone 3. 1 hour 41minutes to 2 hour 20 minutes To access the Start Zones, athletes will need to follow the directional signage and instructions of event staff. Access to the start zones will be via the main entrance and beach pathway of Guanyingting Beach only. Failure to follow this direction may result in disqualification. At 6:02am the Age Group Rolling Start will begin. This will involve athletes being released in groups of approximately eight at a time at intervals across the start line and timing mat. As an individual crosses the start line and timing mat, their individual time will start. The rolling start will continue from Zone 1 to Zone 3 until all athletes have crossed the timing mat and began the race. SWIM SUPPORT There will be a large number of water safety personnel and craft on the water pre and during the swim. The water safety team is there to support you should you require. They will be resourced with an array of Rescue Boards, Surf Ski s, Paddle Boards, Jet Ski s and IRB s. At any time should you require the assistance of water safety please raise one arm into the air and they will come to your aid. Water Safety will be wearing the traditional yellow and red surf lifesaving uniforms for easy identification. Should at any point an athlete decide to abandon the swim, they will be taken to one swim extraction point. From here they will be required to confirm their athlete number and be checked over by medical. It is then the athlete s responsibility to walk back to Transition and hand in their timing chip to the Drop Out Clerk located at the Information Tent. Age Group athletes must walk across the timing mat under the swim start line to activate their timing chip. The Age Group Rolling Start will begin at 6:02am with athletes being released in small groups at regular intervals until all athletes have crossed the start line and entered the water. Please remember that your own individual race time will NOT start until you cross the timing mat. Please note, the use of pull buoys as floats will NOT be permitted during the swim. 21 SWIMSMART Top 10 Checklist An open-water swim in a triathlon is substantially different from swimming in a pool. To alleviate stress, it s important that you arrive on race day healthy, fit and prepared. Here's a top-10 checklist to help get you ready. 1. Prepare for Race Conditions Race day should not be your first open water swim. Make sure some of your training replicates real race conditions, including water temperature, proximity to other swimmers and wearing a wetsuit if needed. 2. Race in Shorter Events Being properly trained is the best way to reduce anxiety. If possible, race in shorter events and clinics to prepare yourself for open water conditions. For extra guidance, talk to a coach or your local triathlon club. 3. Learn About Course Details It s important to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically prior to race day. Thoroughly review the race website and pre-race communication to familiarise yourself with the course. Keep in mind, every body of water is different, so you ll need to educate yourself on water current and surf conditions. Study the event timetable to plan for proper arrival and preparation. 4. Ensure Heart Health As an athlete in training, you should take the proper steps to assess your health with your physician. If you have any concerns about your heart health, we recommend you consult with your GP prior undertaking the event. 5. Pay Attention to Warning Signs If you experience chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, light- headedness or blacking out while training, consult your doctor. 6. Don t Use New Gear on Race Day Focus on controlling as much as you can on race day. You should never race in equipment you haven t trained in this is not the time to test new gear. Make sure your wetsuit fits properly and that your goggles, swim cap and other accessories work properly. Prepare for the unexpected with backups of all your gear. 7. Warm Up on Race Day Arrive early enough on race day for a proper warm-up prior to the start. No morning warm up swim on race day. Spend between 5 and 10 minutes getting loose. Be sure to do some cardio activity, such as a light jog, to increase circulation and prep your muscles. 8. Checkout the Course Get comfortable with the course by checking out water conditions, the swim entry and exit layouts along with the turning buoy locations. Identify basic navigation points so that you know what you are swimming towards. 9. Start Easy Relax and Breathe Don t race at maximum effort from the start. Relax and focus on proper breathing technique as you settle into a sustainable pace. 10. Be Alert and Ask For Help In a race setting always stop at the first sign of a medical problem. If you or a fellow athlete needs help, just raise your hand to alert a lifeguard or safety boat. Race rules allow for competitors to stop or rest at any time during the swim. Feel free to hold on to a static object like a raft, buoy, or dock. You may also rest by holding on to a kayak, boat or even a paddle-board. As long as you don t use it to move forward, you won t face disqualification.

22 BIKE COURSE 180KM Cut off time 10 hours 30 minutes after individual start time. View maps on the official website>> COURSE DESCRIPTION Our 180km bike course will take athletes on a scenic ride to each corner of the island of Penghu. Athletes will pass through the town area of Penghu before heading out on a course with rolling hills that passes through many small island villages, past white sand beaches, temples, and across the Penghu Great Bridge. After heading out from transition athletes will immediately make their way through the town and then out to the highway, which will have two aid stations before leading them to the loop section of the course. There will be three aid stations and a special needs station set up inside the loop section to be passed two times each. The last stretch of the course leading back to transition is a 20km highway that returns athletes to the same road they headed out on. Police officers, event crew, and course marshals will also be on hand to ensure safe passage. Distance markers will be in place every 10km along the course TRAFFIC The roads are not fully closed, there will be vehicular traffic sharing the roads at times. Please exercise vigilance and tolerance if traffic is encountered, particularly at all roundabouts and intersections and always ride on the right side of the road. Normal road rules apply. Police, traffic controllers, course marshals and event crew will be on course to assist. BIKE COURSE RULES FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT THE WEBSITE

23 RUN COURSE 42.2KM Cut off time 17 hours after start time after individual start time. View maps on the official website>> COURSE DESCRIPTION Once athletes exit the transition they will run into the heart of Penghu and then follow the course around the harbour. Athletes will then make a U turn to head back toward to the town area. Athletes will run the lap course four times and will pass the eventual finish line twice on each loop. At all times the athletes will be running on a paved surface with four aid station locations on each lap. Athletes must receive three lap bands during the run before heading to the finish. NIGHT VISIBILITY To cooperate with the Penghu Road Management Act, athletes are required to wear a supplied glow stick. Athletes will receive glow stick at every Aid Station. It is compulsory for all athletes to wear these from 5:30pm onwards for safety reasons. Any athlete who does not abide may risk disqualification. ROAD & PATHWAY TRAFFIC There will be vehicular traffic adjacent to the course comprising event personnel and local residents requiring access, so please exercise vigilance and tolerance at all times, especially if traffic is encountered. High levels of awareness should be applied at all roundabouts and intersections. Normal road rules apply at all times. Police, traffic controllers and event crew will be on course to patrol and direct traffic. Additional awareness should be applied along the pathways.
