Well, I found that an intriguing notion, so I began to look into it last October when David and Molly Jackson introduced a new line of shoes called minimus and announced that they would be available in February of This was a concept quite different from the approach to footwear that I had taken for the past 30 years or so, so I started reading and practicing at this barefoot and minimalist thing in hopes of being ready to go with the minimus when it was released. This has been a continuation of what George Sheehan, running guru of my early years as a runner, called our individual experiment of one. When I began running in 1974, I wore relatively light shoes with little support built into the shoe. Any injury I sustained, was blamed on lack of support. In my first year as a runner, I went into rigid orthotics. These brought on a whole new range of injuries, and I gradually reverted back to somewhat less support. Every new shoe that came on the market offered some correction to my problem feet. Some seemed to work, others didn t. In about , I ran a couple of ultras for which I was ill prepared, but I was only 40ish then and my body handled the workload for a while. In that year, I ran 54 miles on one occasion and about 40 miles several weeks later, both in racing flats with no support built in. The result, plantar fasciitis, BIG TIME! After a two year period of no running, I found an insole that seemed to be the right support for me, and I used them in every shoe that I wore thereafter. I mean, running shoes, work shoes, casual shoes, never without those insoles. I laced my shoes very tight at all times, encasing them in total-control. It seemed right, but I still developed overuse injuries along the way. Along the way, my running changed. My Above: Dr. Adam Bright near the finish of a Summer Beach Run. Left: Guy barefoot walks Buster. body changed with age. My stride changed. So, here came the promotion of barefoot and minimalist running, at a time when I felt it was worth a try. After all, I had tried almost everything else. I first read Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, which was a fascinating and motivating book that I just couldn t put down. Next came Barefoot Running by Michael Sandler. This author really tells it like it is. Everything he described about the beginning experience of preparing to run barefoot turned out to be accurate and applied to my own experience. His own experience as a severely injured athlete making a comeback from being told by doctors that he would never run again was inspiring and filled with factual information. His primary message was to take it slow and be patient about making any transition from running shod to running barefoot. Any sign of tenderness or soreness is a reason to back off and wait for healing before pressing on to build again. The no pain, no gain philosophy really is counter-productive in the pursuit of barefoot running. Michael Sandler maintains an active web site, com, which provides valuable insights into Continued on page 10 MANASOTA TRACK CLUB APRIL

President s Perspective March 2011 I have seen the extreme! A few weeks ago I had the privilege to see our ultra runners in action at the MTC Ultra race at Oscar Scherer Park. Race director, Dave Siegwald puts this race on each year, and his experience is evident. It was perfect running weather for the crazy 50K runners and very inspiring for me. Among the runners were past president, Sharon Guy (25K) and current board members Amanda Georgiades (50K), Guy Ealey (25K) and Jen Robertson (25K). I was able to run part of a lap with Jen and am definitely doing this race next year, the 25K Fun Run that is. Another race that occurred in March was the Sarasota Half Marathon. Our brand new MTC Tent made its debut appearance, and boy did it look good. Jan Carpenter also put together a beautiful Benefit Board that we displayed under our tent. (Check out the picture on this page.) It was a great way for our members to find a gathering place after the race and during the awards. I heard only positive comments from every runner who stopped by. So many mentioned this race to be their half marathon PR. Congratulations to all who ran! Happy Springfest everyone! Can you believe that this year s Springfest race tripled in registrations? With over 600 runners, this race was a huge success both for the Police Athletic League and for Felicia Cox and her team of race coordinators. Another aspect that amazed me was that with over 600 runners, there were no lines for the Porta Johns. That is a feat in itself. Sherriff, Tom Knight started us off to a perfect morning of running. The course offered plenty of room to run with your friends and utilized the Legacy Trail for those who ran the 12K. If you missed this race, be sure to register next year. Until then check out the MTC web site for races scheduled this month. The Mote Marine Turtle Run and Life in the Son will be two you do not want to miss. Calling all running Moms and Dads! If you are like me and have school-age children, it s pretty much a task in itself to find time to get a long run in. It was much easier when I could plop them into a jogging stroller and go. So, I have come up with a brilliant idea to make our children happy and allow us running parents able to stick to a training program for long runs. We can meet at a playground in town where a Child Watcher (reference-checked teen) will monitor the children on the playground while we run. Parents can pay $5 per school-aged child and plan to carry a cell phone in case they are needed. The Child Watcher will provide a drink and snack for each child and will be available up to two hours. To get started, I would like to meet at Island Park by Marina Jacks on Wednesday, April 20th to see if my idea is as brilliant as I think it is. We can make changes or plan the next run from there. With all of the running we do, isn t it time for a day to relax? Well, keep open May 1st for the Manasota Track Club Annual Picnic at Glebe Park. This is bound to be the best yet. There will be food, beer, non-alcoholic drinks, corn hole, softball, a bounce house for the kids, and relaxing chairs, whatever it takes to show our members a fun day at the park. I hope to see you there! In the meantime, run, have fun and enjoy life! Patti Brustad MANASOTA TRACK CLUB APRIL

Minutes of the Manasota Track Club on the site visits of the 3 venues. The committee graded each venue on 13 specific criteria some of those criteria included: Price, Ambiance, and Food. They are keeping the date to not conflict with Ringling Bridge Run and Naples Half. They wanted to change the venue just for a change. The format of the banquet will remain the same. However, there will be one main change - the elimination of 2 drink tickets per person and the addition of wine being served with dinner instead. Josephine asked the board s opinion about Plated or Buffet at Banquets. The consensus was buffet. Each member would get an personalized Invitation (like a wedding invitation) To buy invitations would come from the extra money that the committee is saving from other places in the budget. There was a discussion of pro and cons of having our annual banquet at a country club. The 2011 Banquet Committee decreased the cost of the banquet from the proposed and approved budget from April 2011 by 10%. 10 Barefoot Running Going Bare: Continued from cover every aspect of the barefoot running movement. Another author, Jason Robillard, in The Barefoot Running Book, offers the same cautions. If you really want an in-depth look at minimalist and barefoot running and how it is impacting the running shoe industry, go to and read the article Is Less More. There is a lot of information there, and it is telling me that this is not just a fad that will quietly go away in a year or so. Shoe retailers may be gingerly testing the environment, but it certainly appears that the running public is seeking real answers to what is really best for the sport and the individual. To actually get started, I began going barefoot while walking our dog Buster, one mile, two times daily, on asphalt. I was a total tenderfoot. I hadn t even gone barefoot as a kid! After a couple of weeks, my feet began to feel a bit tougher. Smooth asphalt was okay but then came the onslaught of acorns that has continued all through the winter months. My feet will never get tough enough to handle acorns! I actually felt okay about running barefoot on Siesta Beach. I could handle six miles on sand, but skirted around areas of shells. Somewhere along the way, I developed a tender kernel under the first metatarsal head on my right foot. That required time to rest the tender area, so back into shoes, even on the beach. After a couple of weeks, the tenderness went away and so did the kernel, so back to barefoot dog walking. After six months of adjusting on my part, I can say that my body has adapted well enough to do without the special insoles and I no longer feel the need to lace my shoes tightly. I can run comfortably in what would be considered a minimalist shoe. As predicted by the authors on barefoot running, I have shifted from heel/toe running to a mid-foot strike. I have tried to use a fore-foot landing, but that will need a lot more work. I have also determined that probably the only place you will see me running barefoot will be on the beach or maybe on the trails at Oscar Scherer State Park. My 70 year old feet are not likely to How bare do you dare? Nike Free Vibram Five Fingers New Balance Minimus Trail become tough enough to take barefoot running to harder, coarser surfaces. I have met other MTC runners who have adapted better than I have to barefoot running. Mary Lou Ward has been running barefoot on Siesta Beach for several years. I saw Jonas Stankus at Bill s Beer Run 2010, lined up next to me, barefoot, at the start. He managed the five miles on what I considered a very coarse asphalt surface. He told me he had been training barefoot for only four months! So, what characteristics will I be looking for in a minimalist shoe? It should be lightweight, with a wide toe-box to allow the toes to spread naturally. The sole material under the heel should be only slightly thicker than under the forefoot, and the entire shoe structure should be flexible. The inner surface of the shoe should be such that the shoe can be worn without socks, without concern about seams rubbing or binding against the foot. As with any type of running shoes or apparel, cushioning, support and fit are very personal and individual factors, subject to individual feel or taste. The main thing I have learned from the most recent phase of my experiment of one is that the body does adapt, but must be allowed time and patience to allow the adaptation to occur gradually. Rush the process, even a little, and injury is likely to follow. I have grown to be a better listener to what my body parts are telling me. I m not finished with the adaptation process, and I am looking forward to warmer weather and summer beach runs to test my barefoot development further. I have developed a deep respect for those who are far ahead of me in their personal adaptation to barefoot running. We re all different, and some may not be able to make the change, nor even want to give it a try. I m glad I tried, and I m happy that Buster and I can both walk barefoot each day, even though I get some questioning looks from neighbors, especially when I hop and swear each time I encounter acorns and twigs on the road or sidewalk. 16 At the races Out of town races Gasparilla Distance Classic Weekend, Tampa The 34th running of the event was February It is staged from the Tampa Convention Center and the races are primarily run on Bayshore Blvd. on the west side of Tampa Bay. This year s events: Saturday, a 15K and 5K. Sunday, a half marathon and 8K. Shamrock 10k, Brandon With clear skies and about 50 degrees, it was a perfect day to race. The 10K, which I ran, had 160 finishers and the 5K had 221. Among the familiar faces in attendance were Chuck and Esther Van Duzee, Russ and Maggie Miller, Jennifer Glassburn, Connie Shingledecker, Rich Golden, Silky Sullivan, and Frank Davis. By Dan Gould By Dan Gould Hooters to Hooters Half, Ft. Myers In it s first three years, the Hooters-to-Hooters Half Marathon has brought smiles to the folks at the Moffitt Cancer Center on the receiving end of the $50,000 in profit from the event. The Bradenton and Sarasota running clubs were fairly represented. Tom and Becky Bedford, Chuck and Esther Van Duzee, Melanie Perrone, Bill Ouchark, Larry Larsen, Leslie Thompson, Terry and Michele Deshaies, and Charlie and I were among the usual suspects. 17 3 rd Annual Sammy s Run Put Sammy s Run on your calendar. It takes place May 28th on Memorial Day Weekend. Three groups, Oak Park School, Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation and Manasota Track Club collaborate for the planning and execution of one of the best races in town. It is sanctioned in the MTC series and certified for any and all competitive athletes. The 5K race starts at Oak Park School with fast runners allocated to the front. The race routes into the beautiful Bent Tree neighborhood, The Woodlands, where a turnaround leads you towards a strong finish back at the school. This is followed by a one mile fun run, then by the kid s dashes with strong participation of our students with special needs. The goal of the race is to raise funds for Oak Park School and the Phelan- McDermid Syndrome Foundation but more importantly to raise awareness of those with special needs and the important impact they make in our lives. With the support of so many, including teachers, school staff, Phelan-McDermid foundation families, MTC friends, neighbors, business and personal sponsors, local schools, registered runners and all the volunteers and attendees, Sammy s Run will be a truly great event. Looking for great fun, fitness and the opportunity for a positive experience within your community? Sammy s Run has the answer! One thing we would like to promote this year is the introduction of running to a friend or family member; who never thought that he/she could be a race participant. Sammy s Run is ideal for someone s first race. The elite runners are out early and can run a strong race but other runners can do their thing at their own pace in their own style. The follow-up crowd is less intimidating, lots of fun and can perhaps spark a new interest. A majority of the readers of this newsletter already are runners and realize the benefits. How about getting someone started on a training program? Encourage them, train them and run with them. The challenge is twofold. First, we want to have participants involved in Sammy s Run so we can offer a community activity that allows and promotes all of us with differences to be recognized for all of our individual characteristics. We all possess individual competencies: The child that makes us smile because of their dancing eyes; the child with persistence to work towards an end and the adult who is able to create a masterpiece. We also possess individual disabilities: The teenager needing a wheelchair to get to school; the runner who blew out her ACL or the 80 year old with arthritis that can t run as fast as he did. By recognizing our differences maybe we can also appreciate our similarities. We all want to have love, attention and involvement in meaningful activities. Sammy s Run wants those of us out in the community with all of our differences to come together and show the community who we are, not letting disability identify who we are. Secondly, evidence shows that American adults are less physically active than persons from other developing countries. We should be adding daily physical activity for our overall health. Be a mentor in promoting your sport while helping someone develop some healthy habits. Be a role model for healthy living. Participation at any level is encouraged. If you are not able or interested in running, walking or being pushed in a wheelchair/stroller, there is always the sideline cheering, volunteering or sponsoring. Just come and enjoy the morning. Sammy s Run, is one community event you will not want to miss! MANASOTA TRACK CLUB APRIL

Rate the races By Terry Deshaies I rate the races based on 4 criteria: organization, the course, awards and post race party. Anyone who would like to comment about a race can me directly at deshaitr@hotmail. com. Scrub Jay 5k and 10k The organization was good as far as the parking and packet pick-up went, but just one question, where was the water? They had plenty during the 5k, but they ran out during the 10k!! Making a tough trail run seem that much longer. Also there was no water at the finish and it was quite a hike to get back to the awards area to get any. This was a problem last year as well. The 5k course was same as last year, rough!! My calves were screaming!! It started on the road for about the first half-mile, then it was onto the trails and it was difficult to get good footing. You really had to watch where you planted each step. Then you headed out onto the legacy trail for the last.6 miles. My Garmin measured 3.1 miles for the 5k. The 10k course was a mix of the old and new. It started out like Scrub Jays of old and then headed out onto the new course for the second half. My Garmin measured 6.19 for the 10k. Between dodging the pine cones and spinning in the sand this made for one challenging course. I did like the idea of having the 5k and 10k start at different times. Many people, myself included, were able to do both races. Some did the 5k as a warm up for the 10k and some did the 10k after the 5k, because we are crazy The awards were nice trophies for the overall winners of the 10k. They also had ribbons (with event name on them) for the 1st thru 6th in each age group, plus the first 3 got gift certificates. The post race party was very good. They had hot dogs, chips, sliced oranges and assorted beverages. They did have a bunch of raffles and if you hung around long enough you won something I give the Scrub Jay a 9.0 out of 10 due to the lack of water on the course and at the finish line. Hooters to Hooters Half Marathon This race takes place in Fort Myers and very closely resembles the Sarasota Half Marathon in almost every possible way except for the price and post race party. I signed up a week before the race and it was $40. Not to mention, that this is a cause I still feel very strongly about The organization was very good and you could park right in the shopping center where Hooters is located. Packet pick up was very convenient and the chips where built right into the bib just like the Ringling Bridge run. The only problem, once again, was with the jiffy john s!!! They weren t so jiffy, as there was not near enough of them. This race is getting bigger and bigger and the lines were huge right before the start of the race!! The course felt just like running in Sarasota except for going by the Edison Museum. The course wound through the streets along the water front, then about half way through the race you ran over the Edison Bridge, which is very similar to the Ringling Bridge. You turned around just a little past the bridge then back over it to the finish line. According to my Garmin, the course was marked a little long at 13.3 miles. The awards were huge mugs for the overall and different age group winners. The finishing medal was the symbol of the Hooters Owl running, but it wasn t as nice as last year s finishing medal and was attached to a Hooters orange ribbon. The post race party was awesome!! They had all the wings you could eat and beer you could drink. They had the usual staples as well bagels, huge apples, grapes and uncut bananas. They also had a good amount of raffles as well. I give the Hooters to Hooters Half Marathon a 9.95 out of 10. Still one of the most fun races I ve ever done. The only problems were the lack of bathrooms and the course being just a little long. Other than that, just a spectacular race and as one guy put it, This is the greatest day of my life!!! Boca Grande 5k I still like the small races. This race set in Boca Grange gives you old Florida hometown feeling. The organization was good as you could park anywhere you wanted and it was just a short jog to the start. The course was a run around the streets of Boca 18 MANASOTA TRACK CLUB APRIL 2011

Rate the races Grande, duh. Nothing fancy, pretty flat with one small bridge to go over at about the half-mile point. The course was marked right on 3.1 The awards were nice plaques for the overall winners and gift cards for Walmart. 1st thru 3rd got very nice acrylic awards. The post race party was pretty good. They had honey buns, sliced oranges, muffins, power bars and chocolate chip cookies. I give the Boca Grande 5k a 9.5 out of 10. This old school Florida race is a great alternative to Gasparilla and has a better post race party Sarasota Half Marathon First off why didn t anyone tell me that if you didn t pay the extra $10 for parking that you were going to have to park in the next county!! I thought VIP parking would be a couple of the front rows near the start, not the whole parking lot!!! That was just plain ridiculous. I was lucky enough to get there early and got to park close to the main parking lot. I sat there and watched as car after car was not allowed in the main (nearly empty) lot and had to go find alternative parking. Maybe the $10 for parking should have been included in the already overpriced race!! The course was a nice run starting from the Van Wezel parking lot out over the Ringling Bridge, continuing out to St. Armands and back to US41 and kind of a long stretch up 41 to the Ringling Museum, then we hit the back streets, which had some pretty nice scenery, then back to 41 to the finish at Van Wezel. The course was marked right on 13.1 miles and they had plenty of refreshments out on the course, even a few random strawberries right at about mile 12. The awards for the overall winners were some glass windshield looking thing, actually it looked pretty cool. The individual age group awards were nice gold, silver and bronze medals. The finisher s medals were also really nice, but there was no event name on the ribbon. The post race party was just awful!!! When the best part is a sign that reads You re winning by Charlie Sheen you know you ve hit a stinker of a party!! Okay so you ve got one of the biggest races in town and the most expensive a c r a f t b e e r b a r BEER MILE Saturday, May 21st 10:30 am check in 11:00 am race starts Prizes awarded in 6 different categories mrbeeryssrq.com 2645 mall drive sarasota fl L o c a t e d i n g u l f g a t e Chug a beer, Run a 1/4 mile Chug a beer, Run a 1/4 mile Chug a beer, Run a 1/4 mile Chug a beer, Run a 1/4 mile MANASOTA TRACK CLUB APRIL

Rate the races and you can t offer up some good eats!!! A fruit cup, muffins, bagels and bananas that just don t cut it, but at least they didn t cut the bananas in half. Not to mention, but I will 2000 people looking for results and they had no results posted anywhere!!! What s with that? Also they should have had people directing you to the food. The line was about 100 feet long and nobody told us there were two lines- no waiting!!! I give Sarasota Half Marathon a generous 8.0 out of 10. My advice to runners, do the PAL Half in Palmer Ranch or the Hooters Half in Ft. Myers!!! They don t charge you to park the car and they just don t have a post race party they have a celebration!! The quick 1,2,3 on upcoming races: Sharks Tooth 10k: Didn t do this one last year, but I am doing it this year so we shall see. Life in the Sun 5k/10k: Didn t do this one last year either, man what was I doing? I am running it this year though and I ve heard good things about last year s race. This is on the same day as the Mental Awareness run. Siesta Beach Mental Health Awareness 5k: Pretty good race last year, how can you go wrong, it s running on the beach. Same day as Life in the Son, people really need to talk to each other we have plenty of weekends with nothing going on!! Desoto 5k: This is a must do for this area, this is the only race where thousands of people line the course and cheer you on, it makes you feel like you re running the Boston Marathon!! And who can forget the sprinklers going on to start last years the race :) See you at the races!! 20 MANASOTA TRACK CLUB APRIL 2011

Coach tips Structure Your Running - Do You Have a Plan? By Hugh Thomas Running is a great activity/sport because it gives us a whole range of options and opportunities to do what we want. I separate activity and sport because some of us just run for fitness, stress relief or weight control and rarely enter races, while others love the competitive and social atmosphere that races generate. We can run alone, in groups, on roads, along trails, across hills and valleys and in all kinds of weather. We all have our reasons for running, why we started and why we continue. Regardless of our differing motives and ability, I believe we can all benefit by having a little structure and variety in our running lives. There are those, including myself, who prefer to follow a training plan, geared perhaps to a specific event in the future. All the runs are mapped out in a structured progressive way in order to achieve the desired goal. Many generic plans are available through the internet for all distances or specific customized plans can be prepared by a qualified coach. So when you head out for a run, do you have a purpose in mind or is it just the same old route at the same old pace? You may like to run the same old route at the same old pace, and that s fine, but consider adding a little variety to your running life. You can even make some simple changes that don t involve increasing your weekly mileage. Let s look at a runner who runs 4 miles a day, 5 days a week, for a total of 20 miles with all miles being run at the same pace. Their schedule is as follows: Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri Sat Sun Total Rest 4m 4m 4m Rest 4m 4m 20m We can reorganize and spice up this schedule simply by: alternating days that are easier and days that are harder, reallocating miles to create longer and shorter runs, and include one day with segments of slightly faster running. There are other ways of changing up a schedule e.g. hills, track, tempo and fartlek runs, but I have kept things simple for the purposes of this illustration. After the changes are made, their new and improved schedule looks like this: Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri Sat Sun Total Rest 3m 5m 3m Rest 3m 6m 20m The total mileage remains at 20 miles per week. However, the miles have been redistributed to create a long run of 6 miles on Sunday, easy 3 mile runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and a 5 mile run on Wednesday, which includes some periods of brisk running performed as follows. After a steady warm up, say, 10 to 15 minutes of easy running, increase your pace for 1 minute keeping excellent form. Just make sure you run slightly faster than you usually do, but do not sprint. When the minute is up, relax and recover for 3-5 minutes with very easy running before starting the next 1 minute pace increase. Begin with 4 or 5 repetitions or as many as you feel comfortable with but don t overdo the pace or the number of repetitions so that it leaves you tired. This pace change workout is designed to perk up your running not drag you down. Once the repetitions are done, continue the remainder of your run at an easy pace. Now each time you head out the door you will have a purpose to your run, be it easy, hard, perky or long. Enjoy the change and the challenge. Variety is the spice of running life. 23 At the races Online only content Online only content Online only content MTC 50K ULTRA & 25K FUN RUN Oscar Scherer State Park, March 5, 2011 The runners came from Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Idaho, as well as various parts of Florida, to run in a beautiful park on a beautiful day. But it was MTC s very own Adam Bright who took home the top prize in the 19th annual MTC 50K that was held on Saturday March 5th on the trails at Oscar Scherer State Park. Alexa Groom, age 16, was our youngest runner and the youngest runner to ever run our 50k and Carol Westerman, our hometown Wonder Woman, topped off the age scale. Alexa s dad Carlton was our third place runner last year and he ran part of the run with Alexa this year. Carol had been awarded bib #1 before the race and once again finished this race in style. The runner who traveled the greatest distance to come here was Jeff Ealey, son of our very own Guy Ealey. Jeff trained all winter in the cold of Idaho. He was the first to admit that it was slightly warmer here. We always seem to have at least one runner of national renown in the race. This year it was Anna Piskorska, who came down from Pennsylvania and took the overall female trophy back home with her. Anna is a member of the American 24-hour race team. Last year she competed for America in the world championship 24-hour race in France and was the top American woman running 133 miles that day. The runners ran a 7.75 lap that encompassed parts of each of the park s trails. The 25K runners completed two laps and the 50Kers did four. They had plenty of support from our great volunteers who manned the aid stations and scoring table throughout the day. This year, for the first time, we awarded trophies to overall male and female runners in the 25K fun run. Cameron Wheeler, 17, won the 25K event, again this year, as he did last year. Cameron came down from St Pete with his mom Kathleen, who ran the 50K run. Our overall female winner in the 25K was Jennifer Steding from New Smyrna Beach. The Masters awards went to Erik Jones, a first time 50Ker, who traveled down from Bradenton and by Jennifer Glassburn, who completed her 13th MTC 50K. Jennifer s smile lit up the scoring area each time she passed through. Our Geezer awards (top male and female over 65) were won by Carol Westerman and Harry Hoffman. Harry had to cancel his appearance here last year because he had a knee replacement. You wouldn t have known it this year as he turned in a fine 7:17:34. Both Harry and Carol are members of the 50 State Club, having run a marathon in each state. There were a lot of new faces this year and we hope they come back next year. Christy Snellgroves told Walter White (as she was passing through his station) that if she had known the race was as much fun as it was, she d have been here years ago. The race would not have been possible without our wonderful corps of loyal volunteers. I personally love learning more and more about nutrition and exploring new food ideas to add to my diet. That s exactly what the Night of Nutrition at Whole Foods was all about. If you are like me, you read a lot, talk a lot, and learn about the newest trends for fellow athletes. I am going to get back into eating Kale, I knew about it, used it a bunch, but then it fell off my radar, so last night put it back...patti promised to make Kale chips for everyone at the next board meeting.
