1 2018 DOE LAB MILE RACE REPORT 2018 DOE Lab Mile Race Report SCOTT TRUMMER OF LLNL TAKES AN EARLY LEAD TO WIN 2018 DOE MILE IN 4:33 by Joy MacPherson, SNL-CA 2018 DOE Mile fields 931 laboratory workers LLNL has Fastest Miler & Sandia wins Fastest Labs Five labs across the DOE complex and a total of 931 walkers and runners participated in the 2018 DOE Labs virtual mile race on May 1. Each lab measured a mile course on their campus, held a race, and merged results to determine overall placing. A cross country running scoring system was used to determine team placing. Lawrence Livermore National Laboraties was a big winner, claiming the top men s and women s individual titles, while Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore California won the Fastest Lab. Lawrence Livermore joined the Sandia labs race in Livermore, where Scott Trummer of LLNL, sprinted to an early lead and ran on to win the overall DOE Labs title, in a time of 4:33. Trummer was followed by five Sandia runners, who finished within a second of earch other, in 5:02 to 5:03. This tight-pack finish, gave SNL-CA the best team score, winning the Fastest DOE Lab title, with 25 points. J-Lab finished fourth among labs; third for women runners; and fourth for women s walking. We plan to make this an annual event for our employees. Amber Kramer was Y12 s highest finisher, clocking a 7:30 and finishing 8 th overall for women. Gilbert Chan and Scott Vowell walked to a first and third place finish, respectively; while Debbie Vowell finished fourth overall in the women s walk.

Both men finished in 5:02, tying for second place, overall. However, while Brett ran in Albuquerque, Kyle ran in Livermore. Sandia labs proved fleet of feet in the 2018 Mile competition, as SNL-CA and SNL-NM finished first and second, respectively. SNL-NM s top five runners finished in the top 16, giving them a 51-point team total; twice that of SNL-CA s winning total of 25 points. SNL-NM opted to record only the top finishers in the mile, and applauded the strong crowd of walkers that turned out for the event. We have a very strong walking community, said Callie Lovato, Preventive Health Team Lead for SNL-NM, and they showed up in force for the DOE Mile.
