1 Here at the Tokyo Marathon Foundation, we are committed to promote sport of running in order to contribute to the society, promote international exchange and assist in creating a healthier Tokyo. The Tokyo Marathon Foundation was established on June 30, 2010 with the intention of stabilizing the management and developing it into a world-class event that would bring together a large numbers of runners from Japan and all over the world. Our primary aim is to contribute to advancing public health and enriching city life by popularizing and promoting sport of running. Every year over 30,000 runners and more than 10,000 volunteers join together with innumerable fans cheering on the roadside or by watching the broadcast to participate in the Tokyo Marathon, The Day We Unite. In addition to the Tokyo Marathon, we also organize a range of other activities, such as, managing our official running club ONE TOKYO, official volunteer club VOLUNTAINER, runner support facility JOGPORT ARIAKE and contributing to the society through our project Sports Legacy Program. The Tokyo Marathon being the only race in Asia to be included along the world-renowned races of the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM), strive to feature elite marathon and wheelchair marathon. In 2017, the course was redesigned to finish on a flat stretch in front of the Tokyo Station on Gyoko-dori Avenue, making it easier to set a new record. And as a result, both the men and female divisions have set a new Japanese all-comers record and in following year of 2018, new Japanese national record were set in men s division. The Tokyo Marathon 2019, planned to be held on March 3, will increase the runner capacity by 2,000 people, in which 1,000 will be Charity Runners, creating a greater opportunity to contribute to the society more than ever before. Furthermore, we believe that it is our duty to share our knowledge for event management, security structure, and volunteer management to enhance 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, and thus exchanged written agreement in April, 2017 and commit to support the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. As the host of one of the world s foremost marathons, the Tokyo Marathon Foundation will continue to drive forward the running movement while aiming to promote a lifestyle and society revolving around running. We sincerely hope to continue receiving your cooperation and support. Tokyo Marathon Foundation President / CEO Shizuo ITO

5 Concept The Day We Unite. Countless stories are woven together, and true inspiration springs forth. Joy of Running While it s inspiring to see the world-leading athletes up close, recreational runners running alongside elite runners can also run the marathon in their own unique way according to their individual goals. It s the day when 38,000 people all get to play the lead role. Pride of Supporting Uniting with fellow supporters that you meet for the first time to support runners with a smile. They may be complete strangers, but you can t help but reach out to runners who are trying their best. It is the day when the joy of helping other people changes into a sense of pride. Delight of Cheering You only came along to cheer on your family, but you eventually find yourself cheering on complete strangers as well. It s inspiring to see someone trying their best. It s the day when emotions run high, as you cheer on runners until you lose your voice.

6 Vision Our Vision for the Future of the Tokyo Marathon Tokyo Marathon Race Director Tadaaki HAYANO Key Elements in Creating The Best Race in The World In Tokyo Marathon 2007, elite and recreational runners combined totaling to 30,000runners ran through the metropolitan Tokyo, marking a new chapter in the history of Japanese marathon. And since, we have successfully organized twelve races. In those times, the Tokyo Marathon has strived to become a world-leading event by implementing range of activities, such as inviting world-class runners and introducing charity programs. As a result, some people have taken up running motivated by the event, and new marathons have even launched in various part of Japan following Tokyo s footstep. Through this, the Tokyo Marathon is recognized from various corner of Japan and in fall of 2012, the Tokyo Marathon became the first race in Asia to be included in the World Marathons Majors (currently the Abbott World Marathon Majors ), proving that it has grown into truly a world-class event. Aiming to raise the level of elite racing, in 2017 we undertook a major course alteration for the first time, creating a course with a flat stretch that made it easier to set a new record. As a result, men and women division both set a new all-comers record within Japan and in the following year of 2018, a new Japanese record was set in the men s division for the first time in 16 years. In accordance with our achievement, we will continue to increase the level of the elite race while increasing the charity runner capacity each year to proactively participate to social contribution. The Tokyo Marathon is committed to continue growing to become the World s Greatest Race in the future based on the three points outlined below. Please continue to guide and support us as we move onward with our next stage. The most exciting race in the world Progression of Elite Race Developing a world-leading race with a goal of setting new record and ultimately breaking the world record. Recreational runners create their own stories Each runner plays the starring role in their own Tokyo Marathon stories. The friendliest and safest race in the world Hospitality Welcoming runners, families and related parties from all over the world. The safest race in the world Ample security and first-aid facilities will ensure an event safe for anyone to participate. The most enjoyable race in the world An enjoyable race for runners Ensuring that runners from all over the country have fun throughout, not just on the race day of the Tokyo Marathon. An enjoyable race for spectators Creating a stage that allows everyone to share in the excitement, either by cheering on runners from the sidelines or by watching on television. Creating the Greatest Wheelchair Race in the World Wheelchair Race Director Masazumi SOEJIMA As the wheelchair-race director, I hope to spread the excitement of wheelchair racing by inviting the worlds top-level athletes and creating an excitingly intense race. Furthermore, I hope that Tokyo Marathon will be an inspirational event that will help create greater opportunities and support children starting wheelchair racing and to those who aims to participate in Paralympics. Wheelchair Marathon as an International Event Since the Tokyo Marathon 2016, the wheelchair marathon race (T53 & T54) has been officially sanctioned by the International Paralympic Committee. Additionally, since the Tokyo Marathon 2017, the wheelchair race has been an official event of the Abbott World Marathon Majors (Abbott WMM) Wheelchair Marathon Race Series, for which the point system applies.

8 TOKYO MARATHON 2019 Key Visual Design Concept At first glance, the image looks like a colorful depiction of the start of the marathon. However, on a closer look, one can see that it is actually a collage of ordinary clothes. The Tokyo Marathon is a festival that happens only once a year. However, it is supported by many lives of ordinary people with different occupation and lifestyles. Each and every person involved in the Tokyo Marathon is passionate to run, not only on the day of marathon-but every day. This image depicts how passion and enthusiasm unites as one to form the Tokyo Marathon. The marathon s slogan for 2019 is Ready? which expresses the feeling of Something exciting is bound to happen! to runners, volunteers, staff, and spectators that have been involved with the Tokyo Marathon in the past, as well as people who have yet to take an interest in the event. The slogan, which reflects the spirit of the marathon, intuitively conveys the feeling of excitement in the air before the start of the race. The Tokyo Marathon Logo The logo was renewed in 10th annual Tokyo Marathon in These colored lines woven together represents all the participating runners, volunteers, spectators and their individual stories to express the event theme, The Day We Unite. About the first Tokyo Marathon logo ( ) Since 2007, the official emblem of the Tokyo Marathon has featured the kanji character (dai : big) as its central motif. With powerful brush strokes depicting a runner in motion, this dynamic image created the sense of a runner s breath reaching outward from the heart of Tokyo to the world.
