The much-awaited GST will be implemented effective 1st July 2017 and it is expected to be a big boost for the logistics industry. I am not of the opinion that this GST is in its best Avatar yet. This revolutionary process is meant to ease the current taxing structure by removing all tax components in various forms and bring it under one code. However, with commodity based slabs and price based slabs within a particular commodity is somewhat like the old wine in a new bottle. To me a bad GST is better than no GST and hopefully in the coming years we could further simplify the GST structure. Just two days prior to the GST implementation one of our lady Chief ministers demanded to withhold the GST implementation for 6 months. Either she was sleeping or she never thought this could actually happen in India. This sort of negative approach by these unqualified politicians is our agony. GST no doubt will be a welcome move not only for the domestic logistics but also for the international shipments. There were many instances in the past where we couldn t meet the dead lines for air and ocean shipment due to the long queue of trucks and agonizing delays at the border. Now,since there are no state borders for tax and the documentation at the border is a simple process, the trucks could keep moving and avoid substantial delays that will not only save costs but also meet the dead lines! 5 All About Salvaging & Cleaning Up Shipwrecks Shipwrecked vessels represent a serious environmental threat and a great financial burden on the responsible party, with taxpayers sometimes left to foot large clean-up bills. So, who bears the responsibility, and what measures are in place to ensure shipwrecks are removed safely and effectively? shipwrecks The moment a ship reaches the end of its useful life, either following an accident at sea or when its owner decides repairs and maintenance costs are not financially viable anymore, the vessel becomes a wreck. Marine salvage and wreck removal are part of a regulated, multi-million dollar business. Statistics from the International Salvage Union (ISU), the global trade association tasked with representing and safeguarding the interests of salvors, show that in 2015, ISU members made $717m in gross revenue, with wreck removal alone worth $397m. Ship graveyards Paramount in marine salvage and wreck removal operations is the concern for the environment. Almost all marine casualties, regardless of their cargo, represent a potential threat to the environment, If a ship sinks mid-atlantic, there may still very well be an impact to the immediate environment but no immediate danger of pollution further afield, then unfortunately generally they sink and they stay there, says Richard Janssen, managing director at SMIT Salvage. Today, the abandonment of a ship happens more often in coastal areas, and wrecks will be removed in the case of land reclamation or a port development project. The first step of salvage is removing any pollutant materials on the ship. This usually means taking the bunkers off, as well as the batteries and the grease and the paint anything that can be of immediate threat to the environment needs to be taken off the ship. Subject to the location of the wreck and type of bunkers, you normally need a surface vessel, a spread to heat the oil to make it pump-able again. After removing the pollutants from the ship then to remove any pollutant materials" Up to 45m-50m in depth, Anything deeper requires mixed gas or saturation diving or sending in remote operated vehicles (ROVs). In the case of container vessels, it might be that you have to remove containers carrying dangerous goods, such as acetone, batteries, poison, or chemicals, Janssen explains. Who bears the cost? The cost of a wreck clean-up is primarily the ship owner s responsibility; and nine out of ten times his or her liability underwriter, also known as a P&I Club, will step in and take care of it. This can sometimes be circumvented under the Limitation Convention, in which case the P&I Club sets up a Wreck Fund for the authorities and leaves the removal up to them. Similarly, if the removal is requested as part of the expansion of ports, the port authority or developer pays for it. However, there are a number of countries, for instance New Zealand, where the owner remains liable himself. The advancement of technology makes it easier, or at least possible, to gain access to certain wrecks and work on them, Janssen says. A lot of technologies flow over from the offshore industry, but it's more than just the equipment, it's the ingenuity of being familiar with shipwrecks and associated engineering and that makes it more interesting to apply it. Looking at the developments in shipping in general, whether it is about the size of vessels, their propulsion systems or ship-to-shore management, it brings a lot of interesting challenges which is exactly why people are active in the salvage industry, he says. 6 Last Night I read a book on Leadership in 50 seconds! After my company's performance, I was waiting for my car at the reception of the Taj Mahal Hotel Colaba. I have no idea why I turned around facing the hotel lobby and happened to observe a very gentle walk by a man in his late 70's escorted by 2 management personnel. In a flash, I removed my phone and asked Neeraj please take a pic of me with him. (Something I have NEVER done). I asked the personnel escorting him "May I have a picture with him?", and in a very Taj eloquent tone he replied, "Sorry Sir its a little late". I respected that. In that instance I observed that these Black Jacket Men are not his personal bodyguards or anything but Taj Hotel General Managers who have not been asked to do this by him, but they are just there. It was 11pm and I could sense, He is a bit tired. He spoke to the concierge staff in a very soft tone and handed over his parking ticket, I kept wondering where his car or driver is? He gently walks to the next car that arrives an old white Honda civic, gets into the drivers' seat and like all common drivers in the world, struggles to get his wallet out from his butt pocket, does that, removes a tip and hands it over to the valet driver (says thank you - assuming that as he said something to which the driver smiled). He drives off and everything at the Taj is the same as 50 seconds back! My car comes in next and I was beaming that I saw a leader whose quotes, case studies, books and actions have inspired me for more than a decade. I asked my valet driver, "is he always like that"?. "He is amazing Sir. His car was waiting in line like others and the cops behind insisted to push it forward but he will always refuse. He doesn't like it if we don't check his car like everyone's is being checked." True leadership is not about doing extraordinary things but doing common things in an extraordinary manner. He was the owner of the hotel, the former chairman of the Tata Group and India's foremost philanthropist - Ratan Tata (79)" Syed Shakeeb Bangalore Branch
As a group of frogs were travelling through the woods, two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs crowded around the pit and saw how deep it was, they told the two frogs that there was no hope left for them. However, the two frogs decided to ignore what the others were saying and they proceeded to try and jump out of the pit. Despite their efforts, the group of frogs at the top of the pit were still saying that they should just give up that they would never make it out. Eventually, one of the frogs took heed to what the others were saying and he gave up, falling down to his death. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, Did you not hear us? The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time. Moral of the story: People s words can have a big effect on other s lives. Think about what you say before it comes out of your mouth. It might just be the difference between life and death. Uplifting Spirits Simi Sainudeen Corporate
Sea bridges are engineering marvels stretching across blue waters. India has five sea bridges and one under construction. The Bandra Worli Sea Link, officially called Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, is a cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete-steel viaducts on either side that links Bandra in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai with Worli in South Mumbai. The bridge is a part of the proposed Western Freeway that will link the Western Suburbs to Nariman Point in Mumbai's main business district. the sea-link reduces travel time between Bandra and Worli during peak hours from minutes to minutes Bandra Worli Sea Link Sea Bridges Across India Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. Opened on 24 February 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India until the opening of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in The rail bridge is, for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double-leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. Pamban Bridge The Pamban Road Bridge connects the National Highway (NH 49) with the Rameswaram island. It stands on the palk strait and between the shores of Mandapam (Place on the Indian Main land) and Pamban (One of the fishermen town in Rameswaram island). And it stands parallel to the Pamban Rail Bridge. Pamban Road Bridge ALEX PHILIP cochin
The Airoli Bridge is a bridge in the Mumbai metropolitan area of India. It was constructed to establish a direct road link between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Airoli Bridge Sea Bridges Across India The Vashi Bridge, also known as Thane Creek Bridge, is a bridge, built across the Thane Creek that connects the city of Mumbai to the Indian mainland at Navi Mumbai. The bridge links the suburb of Mankhurd in Mumbai with Vashi in Navi Mumbai, the satellite city of Mumbai. It is one of four entry points into Mumbai (other three being the Airoli Bridge, Mulund check naka and Dahisar check naka), and handles traffic directed towards the region to the south and east of Mumbai. Vashi Bridge The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as the Sewri-Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link, is a proposed 21.8 km, freeway grade road bridge connecting the Indian city of Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, its satellite city. When completed, it would be the longest sea bridge in India.[1] The bridge will begin in Sewri, South Mumbai and cross Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island and will terminate at Chirle village, near Nhava Sheva. The road will be linked to the Mumbai Pune Expressway in the east, and to the proposed Western Freeway in the west. The sea link will contain a 6 lane highway, which will be 27 meters in width, in addition to edge strip and crash barrier. The project is estimated to cost 17,843 crore (US$2.8 billion). The MMRDA plans to award contracts for the project by June 2017, and construction is expected to begin by October Mumbai Trans Harbour Link
Rolls-Royce says the new vessels will be distinguishable no matter what the vessel type. Ship designers at Rolls-Royce have unveiled what the company describes as a radical overhaul of its vessel design philosophy aiming to optimize vessel construction and operations without sacrificing space on board. In the process, the new unified designs will also ensure that a Rolls-Royce-designed vessel, whether it s an offshore support vessel or expedition cruise ship, will be instantly recognizable world-wide. The new design incorporates four key features in each design, Rolls-Royce explains. These are a knuckle line that slopes down towards the bow and links the new designs with older UT and NVC designs. A vertical side area and vertical upper stem which simplify the design and decouples the hull form from the superstructure. The vessels will also have a topside sheer line with a small convex curvature. These features will be present in all the designs in some form but can be modified depending on the ship type. Rolls-Royce noted that certain ship types may require more design modifications than others, and Rolls-Royce naval architects will have the freedom to adjust and apply certain designs to suit each particular vessel as long as they incorporate the four must use elements. Martijn de Jongh, Rolls-Royce Chief Designer Marine, said: Less is often more in ship design and while the new elements have been devised to ensure every Rolls-Royce ship is built for optimum performance and functionality, they will be distinguished by their clear angles, clean shapes and faces. We have evaluated the profile of the vessels to omit any unnecessary aspects, like excessive large windage areas, for instance. They will be easier to build as well. A major feature of the approach is the decoupling of the hull design from the superstructure and other design elements, giving designers and naval architects significantly more flexibility, according to Rolls-Royce. This minimizes complex double curvature plating, common to many vessels, which is difficult and time-consuming to fabricate. The use of flat plate or single curvature plating will be increased, simplifying construction and reducing build time. Depending on the vessel type and operational and construction requirements, the forward topside will be based on five distinct hull forms, which will allow the designs to be applied across a range of vessels from offshore vessels involved in subsea work in harsh environments to expedition cruise ships. All will have a canopied superstructure featuring a curved front with the bottom edge of the bridge wings and windows leaning down towards the bow to create a continuous line flowing into the bow, said Rolls-Royce. So far a number of vessels designed in accordance with the new guidelines have been ordered and are now under construction. In fact a UT 540 windfarm vessel due for delivery from Spain s Gondon shipyard in October is typical of how the new family of UT vessels will look, Rolls-Royce says. Maritime news
