1 Commodore's Message Spyglass Spring 2012 It seems like yesterday that we hauled out and I moaned it was about six months to sailing season. I am like a little kid before Christmas so six months to me was going to feel like forever. Well I am happy to say its March now so that means weeks not months until launch day. I feel the warm breezes, sunshine and winds already... what a glorious feeling. The CBYC Executive has now set the calendar for events this year and what an exciting year it will be. I must say we learned a lot from last year and we are going to correct a lot of mistakes. Paul Faulkner has put together another great racing schedule but this year with a change that I hope will encourage some of our non racers to come out and have a go. Read his article for the details. One thing I will tell you about next years racing is that the 2010 CBYC championship boat, the infamous Sonic 23 of Jorge and Marianna, has been purchased by Bruce Cottrell and will be raced by Bruce and Ian Perrin. My only comment is that now Jorge and Marianna can hate that boat too. Good luck to all. That is about it for me. We will see you at launch where CBYC will have hot coffee and donuts. I hope its warm that day, Paul Cairoli Commodore In Memory of a Truly Great Sailor Member s feedback about last year included: Scheduling events on long weekends Trying to cram too many events into one day Making the events too long and complicated The Exec has listened so this year when you look at our calendar you will see a wellbalanced schedule designed with fun and companionship and good food in mind. We kicked of the new season with a great and well attended Wine and Cheese Seminar in Sobstad in March. The Sobstad staff has been huge supporters of the CBYC and in turn our membership has supported Sobstad. Sobstad expanded their store to twice its size and are displaying even more of its fine product... we were the first people to see the new layout! In February of this year the CBYC lost one of its finest members and I dare say one of its greatest sailors when Lance Phelps past away. I must confess I did not know Lance well which was my fault and ultimately my loss. You see I do not mingle well and unless I am talking to a crowd I am very shy and reserved so it s my fault I did not get to know him better. Despite that I knew much of Lance Phelps' strength and character.

2 I could tell much about him from the way he sailed. Lance, despite suffering physical setbacks that would have made lesser men become reclusive and give up sailing, raced every chance he could and was always amongst the first to arrive at any CBYC event. He loved our club and supported us fully. Lance became a role model to me one Friday afternoon as we sailed Tricks with a full crew up to Barrie. The wind was howling that day, the seas rough and as we turned west into Kempenfelt Bay the gusty winds were right on our nose. On board Tricks we were miserable, cold and wet. At one point I wished my Mom would come and save me. All the while in front of us was a Tanzer, oversailed, shorthanded with Lance stoically at the wheel. I watched as time and time again he was nearly knocked down often rounded up. It was a horrible day for us all. Safely at the dock at Barrie I felt compelled to go over and say something to Lance... to share in our scary and rotten experiences. That was one helluva sail wasn t it I said to him, to which he turned to me with a huge smile Yes it was great was all he said. I was speechless. But I had a new hero. Like I said you can tell a lot about a man by the way he sails. The 2012 Sailpast will held in honour of Lance. I sincerely ask you on behalf of all the Executive to make a point to join us that day. We owe it to Lance and to the memory of one of our greatest sailors. Paul Cairoli Commodore The Ways and Means Hi from Ways and Means Frankly we are now the Free Rum Toasts and Regatta Sponsorship Committee! It s early in the year, but we are already looking at the likelihood of at least one of our Regattas being sponsored and attended by Appleton Rum. This would be the LSIS weekend. Bacardi may also step up for an event. We are also gleeful that our Commodore has moonlighted as a fundraiser by getting sponsorship for a racing series or two. We will endeavor in 2012 to run the odd breakfast and actively participate in the flea market. If you have ideas on how we can with minimal effort raise money we re open. Volunteers will be needed. Ian Perrin Ways & Means Greetings Race Fans! Your dedicated race committee has gotten together over beverages and hammered out a terrific race program for the summer of We ve tried to respond to the feedback we received from the membership. The more of you we can convince to come out and play with us, the better! As a sailor who didn t start racing until I d been in the club for five years, I understand that it can be a bit intimidating to bring your boat out at first. All I can say now is that I wish I hadn t waited so long! My crew and I have had an incredible time honing our skills against other boats in a fleet that is competitive, but not overly aggressive or unsportsmanlike. The laughs we have are just as important as the winning...almost! The Tuesday night racing will continue to be three series of six races each. The only change for this year will be the splitting of the fleet into white and flying sail divisions. The spinnaker boats will do a windward-leeward course, while the white sail boats do a triangle. With any luck, this will accomplish two things: it should encourage more white sailboats to come out and play, and it should

3 get us all to the finish line at about the same time. The Fox Island racing has been expanded from one race to a series of three. Two races will happen during the day on Saturdays and one by the light of the silvery moon on a Friday night. The Lake Simcoe Interclub Series (LSIS) committee has decided to have both LSIS #3 and #4 hosted by the CBYC. The Saturday race will be a Fox Island course, and the Sunday race will be our traditional double triangle in the bay. When you put all of this together with fun social events designed to maximize our enjoyment of our boats and each other, we re in for quite a summer indeed. Cheers, and see you on the start line! As we quickly approach the new sailing season, you may want start getting physically ready to start enjoying life at it s best this summer so this spring s article is about fitness for sailing. Remember that there is a lot of carrying stuff around and pulling lines on a boat and all this becomes a lot easier on you if you prepare yourself for it. This way you can also be more efficient and prevent many injuries. Develop Your Back. Take particular care of your back. Sailors suffer injuries to their backs more than any other part of the body. Try to include exercises for your lower back and deep abdominal muscles everyday. Have Stable Shoulders. Take particular care of your shoulders. After backs, shoulders are sailors next most injured body part. Sailing often requires sudden, strong movements of the arms over a large range of motion and these can trouble the shoulder joints. Sail Fit by Michael Blackburn is a book available out there with specific training tips for sailing. Blackburn is not only an Olympic Laser sailor but also has a PhD in Sports Physiology.

4 So, get moving and get ready for a fun sailing season that is already around the corner. Marianna Koljubakin Social Committee 1 st Vice Commodore s Message This Spring I have not one but two articles. The first one is about CBYC member and past commodore: Bryan Hass. You see Bryan is one of the most creative and most energetic people I know and he is never short of crazy ideas. Here are Michael s top seven favorite training sessions: 7. Postural and hiking muscles: crunches and reverse sit-ups. 6. Static endurance: wall sit. 5. Muscle strength: weight training; focus heavily on your core (back and abs) and shoulders 4. Endurance: exercise bike and rowing machine. This is an interesting one. He alternates working out on the bike and the rowing machine for an hour with roughly 20 minutes of cycling followed by 6 minutes of "sheeting" which is sitting on a rowing machine with straight legs pulling the rowing handle with each arm alternately. The idea is that this simulates a real race. The cycling sessions are the beats; and the rowing machine workouts are the reaches. (Might be a good one for burning some calories and losing those 40 lbs) 3. Endurance: cycling. 2. Hiking endurance: hiking bench. And guess what is Blackburn s #1 favorite workout. Yeap, you guessed it.. 1. Hiking, sheeting, aerobic, strength (everything): Sailing. Yeah. 45 minutes to 4 hours sailing in winds greater than 10 knots. You may have not seem Bryan around much last year, well the reason is that Bryan is now preparing for a year long sabbatical cruise of the east Coast of North America and all the way to the Bahamas with his wife and kids which is cool by itself but Bryan could not do this the easy way no way Bryan had to turn this into a full blown science project. Last year Bryan purchased a project Whitby 42 which is now sitting in his backyard while he rebuilds the whole boat! This is not an easy task but in true Bryan s way he not only is overhauling the whole boat, he has made an amazing blog full of tips and great stories and articles while at it. 5 You are also all welcome to drop by and give Bryan a hand with one of his many projects. He ll be happy to have you holding a tool or a cold one. The trip was made possible through CBYC member Rick Butler and his sailing school: Sail Offshore. Rick was able to secure a Leopard 45 Catamaran as the mother ship and the Dufour 38 Classic as the race boat. The second article is about the first CBYC Caribbean regatta CBYC Goes to the Heineken Regatta! Rick skipped the cat while your Vice Commodore skipped the Dufour. Yes, in 2012 a brave group of CBYC sailors represented your club colours in the prestigious Heineken regatta in St. Marteen. CBYC members Tim Marsden, Pete Livinston, Andy McClellan, Glen Fines, Marianna Koljubakin and Jorge Gomez joined by CBYC future members David and Stephen Meacher and Gary Tailor raced a Dufour 38 in the CSA7 category. The group was joined by Tim, Pete and Gary s wives Corinne, Kim and Cheryl who did an amazing job supporting the racing crew. The group was blessed with excellent weather and great sailing conditions for the whole week. Winds were steady at 20 to 25 knots with gusts in the 30 to 35 knot range and waves averaged 3 meters, which sound like a lot for our dear Lake Simcoe but make perfect Caribbean racing conditions. Warm sunny days were the norm and made the perfect pairing for the beautiful turquoise warm ocean water.

6 The racing in the Heineken is primarily long distance with races averaging 3 to 5 hours with one race going all around the island of St. Marteen. Most races are point to point to you spend the night in a different bay and beach. St Marteen is a Dutch and French island so the culinary scene is second to none with great restaurants and cheap good beer everywhere. I think we all put on some weight Après race parties are another reason people go to the Heineken regatta. Parties last late into the night with great entertainment which our crew did not miss The group loved the Caribbean sailing and the support crew loved the cheap jewellery, taxfree shopping and beautiful beaches. The group was thrilled to sail along really cool boats like the Volvo Ocean Racing boat Telefonica Black, Swans 100, huge trimarans, etc.

7 Back to our dear Lake Simcoe, this year promises to be a great one. Please come out and play. Like our Racing Vice said, you will only regret you did not do it earlier. Fair Winds! Jorge Gomez 1st Vice-Commodore We placed 6th in our fleet of 12 boats which we were pleased with given a few equipment challenges we had with the race boat. We had the best navigator in the world and everyone did a great job sailing the boat, from trimming the sails to winching and tacking to looking out for traffic. I am confident that the CBYC can put a boat on the podium next year! Next year? Yes. We will do it again. Plans are underway for next year s trip to the Heineken regatta as well as other Caribbean regattas like the Virgin Islands and the Antigua Sailing week. No. As a matter of fact some of our crew had very little sailing experience and they loved it. There is enough work on the boat for everyone and it is a great learning experience.
