1 REGION 1. Viðoy DATE OF SURVEY: October 2000 General Description of the Area including Tidal Information This region consists of the northern parts of Borðoy, Kalsoy, Kunoy, Svínoy as well as Fugloy. Borðoy is reached by ferry from Leirvík to Klaksvík and thence there is a ferry to Kalsoy, bridges to Kunoy and Viðoy and ferry from Hvannasund to Svínoy and Fugloy. In addition to the larger and more sheltered fishing and ferry harbour at Norðdepil, there are small piers at Svínoy and Høglettur on Svínoy, Oskalettur on Viðoy, Kirkja and Háttarvík on Fugloy. Høglettur, Kirkja and Háttarvík are served by a small passenger ferry from Norðdepil and are very weather dependant. Hvannasund and Vidvík are fish nursery areas. Hvannasund and Haraldssund have salmon farms. There is a Norway Lobster fishery from September to April in these areas and there are large seabirds and seaduck colonies at various times of the year throughout the region. Tidal streams can reach 6-8 knots, (exceptionally 12 knots in narrow channels), between the islands with unpredictable eddies and overfalls. It is reported that speeds of up to 11 knots are reached in Leirvíksfjørður. Heavy overfalls can be experienced in Kalsoyarfjørður. Tidal streams are generally weak inside the fjords and harbours and within Hvannasund and Haraldssund the streams are likely to be weak due to the causeways which close them off. Maps and Charts Required Kort & Matrikelstyrelsen Føroyar Topograpfisk Atlas 1: Admiralty Charts 117, 3557 Detailed Access to the Rendezvous Point (RVP) Føroyar Topograpfisk Kort 1: ,513,612,613,712,713 The best RVP for this region would be Klaksvík, which has ample storage and provides access either by ferry or road to the other islands. Communications Both UK Cellnet and Vodaphone operate well over the majority of the area. However it is nonexistent in some places. Clearly there is also a shortage of public telephones and therefore portable Inmarsat M sets would be essential in a large-scale operation. Contact Numbers Klaksvík Harbour Harbourmaster, Jógvan Klakkstein / Norðdepil Hvannasund Harbourmaster, Just Poulsen Coastal Protection Sites in Priority Order 1. Norðdepil Aquaculture There are many fish farms in the area that will need to be protected. See the joint ITOPF and UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency Report Protection of Fish farms and Mariculture facilities from Oil Spills for recommended protection and cleanup methods. Region 1: Viðoy R1:1 Introduction
2 Fish Farms Observed Færoe salmon, Hvannasund, Haraldsund East Salmon, Hvannasund Refer to Environmental Sensitivities summary map Region 1 for known locations of fish farms. Unprotectable Sites The majority of the coastline cannot be protected. The reasons are many, but include: Inaccessibility. Highly sensitive sites could possibly be approached by sea. Rocky shoreline which would cut up the boom. Too wide an area to be protected, requiring an excessive length of boom. Excessive tidal or current strength causing oil to pass below the boom. Shoreline Clean-up Sites There are no cleanup sites in this region Region 1: Viðoy R1:2 Introduction

NORÐDEPIL Grid Reference Access Route From Klaksvík take Road 70 to grid reference Detailed Site Access Western access: At grid reference turn onto the minor road into Norðdepil. At grid reference turn right onto into the fish factory and quayside. The boomsite is from the quayside. Eastern access: Turn south and follow to the old concrete pier in Hvannasund opposite the fish factory quay. The access to this pier is passed a private house down a narrow gravel track. Site Hazards/ Safety The quayside on the western shore is unfenced. Landowners and Contact Numbers Just Poulsen Communications Cellphone Reception : Very good FR-01: Very good Bank Characteristics including Load-Bearing Capability The western shore is concrete quayside. The eastern shoreline is a small concrete pier. Environmental Conditions Water Depth Max: Unknown Min: Unknown Tidal Strength Max: Weak Min: Weak Channel Width 130 m Laydown Area There is ample laydown area at western end of the boom at the fish factory. 5 GEM Network; Færoe Islands Coastal Protection Plans Booming Objectives and Configuration A chevron boom could be deployed from the fish factory quayside to the small concrete pier on the eastern shore to close of the head of the fjord and protect the boats and the harbour within. Sorbent boom should be deployed to back up the boom at the running mooring to collect any oil that has seeped. Fig. 1a.1 R1a - SITE 1. NORÐDEPIL R1:5 Grid Ref:
