4 Contents Keymap horeline sensitivity Map isimiut horeline sensitivity summary Area ensitivity value anking Moderate High High High Extreme Extreme Moderate High High High Extreme Physical Environment and Logistics Countermeasures In ice concentrations down to six tenths, in situ burning of oil in conjunction with tracking oiled ice is recommended. In open water conditions in offshore and nearshore areas, containment for recovery or burning is recommended. Dispersant application to protect waterfowl should be considered in the offshore and nearshore waters. Although no current information is available for the many inlets and fjords on this map, the tidal range (3 to 4 m), the geometry of the inlets, and the high reported tidal velocities in a few fjords, suggest that exclusion booming (applicable in currents up to 0.4 m/s to 0.75 knots) of these features would not likely be successful, and is thus not recommended. If local knowledge suggests areas where tidal velocities are less than a knot, exclusion booming could be attempted across fjords or inlets that are up to a kilometre or less in width. Alternatively, diversion booming could be attempted to protect sensitive areas, but even this will not likely succeed in currents exceeding 1.5 m/s (3 knots), due to the excessive lengths of boom and the number of intermediate anchors required to maintain the required angle of the boom to the current. The requirement to constantly change boom angle with changing tidal stream direction would further complicate diversion booming operations. ffshore countermeasures represent the only practical method of protecting most shoreline. Deploying 1000 m of boom at various locations around isimiut could protect the harbour there, providing current speeds are low enough. Exclusion booming with 200 m of boom across the entrance to the small, unnamed inlet just north of isimiut could also protect it in low currents. The deployment of 1000 m of boom could protect the selected area on the south shore of Amerloq (57) in low currents. The use of 200 m of boom at each end of the channel at Ikerasaarsuk could prevent oiling of the area around the settlement. imilarly, 1000 m of boom deployed across the northeastern end of the adjacent selected area (52) could protect at least a portion of its shoreline. Deploying 500 m of boom at various locations around Itilleq could protect the harbour there, providing current speeds are low enough. horelines shown on this map are entirely exposed rock which may not require active cleaning efforts unless heavily contaminated with heavy oils. 5 Contents Keymap Physical Environment and Logistics MAP isimiut Access The nearshore waters in this area are largely uncharted and caution should be exercised. In general, the waters offshore, nearshore, and within the fjords are deep, however, uncharted dangers may exist due to shoaling and islets. In particular, off the seaward end of arfannguaqland there are numerous islands, islets, and rocks. There is shoaling and foul ground in the approaches to isimiut, and uncharted rocks are known to exist in the vicinity. The south side of the inner end of ordløbet contains a large area of foul ground. The prevailing current is ½ knot, setting to the W in waters along the coast. Ice from Baffin Bay affects the coast south to 66, which it reaches in February. First-year ice forms in fjords and sheltered waters, however, tidal stream and stormy weather often break up the ice or prevent its formation except at the inner ends of fjords. Anchorage can be made in the inlet on the south side of Itilleq on a shoal that has a depth of 20 to 50 m. There is a mooring berth at the Itilleq settlement used by vessels up to 50 m length, 4.0 m draft. Anchorage is 1-1/4 miles EE of the settlement with depths of 20 to 25 m. Mean high spring tides are 3.8 m, neap 2.6 m. The harbour is normally ice-free, but the approaches can be blocked with ice in January and February. Between Itilleq and isimiut (Holsteinsborg, 23 miles north) there are four large fjords that appear to be deep but have not been surveyed in detail. n the north side of the entrance to Ikertoq, anchorage can be made in ipisat Havn, close off the southeast side of ipisat in depths of 12 m with fair holding. n the south side of Ikertoq, anchorage can be made in 10 to 12 m in the channel off the abandoned settlement of Ikerasaarsuk. n the east side of Uummannaarsussuaq, the small abandoned settlement of Uummannaarsuk has an anchorage for small vessels (depths 3 to 20 m) and a jetty with depths of 0.5 to 2.0 m alongside. Within Amerloq, the abandoned settlement of Assaqutaq has an anchorage 1 mile east in the easterly of the two inlets on the mainland coast, in depths of 10 m. Water is available from streams close east of the inlet. isimiut is one of the largest towns of west Greenland. Tidal streams are reported as 2 to 3 knots to the W on the flood and 1-1/2 to 2 knots to the E on the ebb. Locally-formed ice is present from January tot he end of April. Anchorage in the outer harbour is in depths of 37 to 55 m, and there are several wharves with depths to 7.0 m alongside. Facilities include cargo-handling, a boatyard, water, supplies and a hospital making this a good candidate for staging response operations in the area. horelines through this area are almost exclusively rock, with islands and islets fronting the coast, making shore access with marine craft difficult. An all-season, asphalt surface airport (799 x 30 m) is available at isimiut. afe havens There are no safe havens on this map. The nearest is on Map 6701 to the north.
