1 REGION 2. Eysturoy (north) DATE OF SURVEY: October 2000 General Description of the Area including Tidal Information The region consists of the northern part of Eysturoy, within which are the coastal villages of Fuglafjørður, Oyndarfjørður, Elduvík, Funningur, Funningsfjørður and Gjógv. Fuglafjørður as it is well protected by the surrounding land has the largest harbour with commercial wharves and a large small boat harbour inside a rock armour breakwater. Funningsfjørður also has a similar small fishing and boat harbour. Neither of these can be protected by conventional booms due to the rocks, but should be protected by at least one and preferable more strings of sorbent boom. There is a small pier at Funningur, which is very exposed. At Gjógv, which is approached through a narrow chasm, boats are hauled out of the water on a boatlift. There is also a boat harbour at Oyndarfjørður, which can be protected. The remaining shoreline of the region is rocky and cannot be protected, however there are a number of fish farms within the fjords, which will require protection Fuglafjørd is a fish nursery area and the fjords generally shelter seaduck. The cliffs of the north coast are important for seabirds from February to August. Tides off the north coast are strong, with severe eddies, but within the fjords are generally weak Maps and Charts Required Kort & Matrikelstyrelsen Føroyar Topograpfisk Atlas 1: Admiralty Charts ChartNumbers 117, 3557 Detailed Access to the Rendezvous Point (RVP) Føroyar Topograpfisk Kort 1: ,412,413,511,512 There is no large central place suitable for an RVP, however, Fuglafjørður, Oyndarfjørður, and Funningsfjørður have sufficient space to store and laydown equipment for local operations. Communications Both UK Cellnet and Vodaphone operate well over the majority of the area. However it is nonexistent in some places. Clearly there is also a shortage of public telephones and therefore portable Inmarsat M sets would be essential in a large-scale operation. Contact Numbers Fuglafjørður Harbour Harbourmaster, Kristian Oluf Christiansen / Funningsfjørður Harbour Harbourmaster Gjógv Harbourmaster, Sofus D Johannesen / Coastal Protection Sites in Priority Order 1. Oyndarfjørður Harbour Aquaculture There are many fish farms in the area that will need to be protected. See the joint ITOPF and UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency Report Protection of Fish farms and Mariculture facilities from Oil Spills for recommended protection and cleanup methods. 2 Fish Farms Observed Alilaks (Vestlaks), Fuglafjørður. Laksaling Vík, Oyndarfjørður. Funninsglaks, Funningsfjórður Refer to Environmental Sensitivities summary map Region 2 for known locations of fish farms. Unprotectable Sites The majority of the coastline cannot be protected. The reasons are many, but include: Inaccessibility. Highly sensitive sites could possibly be approached by sea. Rocky shoreline which would cut up the boom. Too wide an area to be protected, requiring an excessive length of boom. Excessive tidal or current strength causing oil to pass below the boom. Shoreline Clean-up Sites 1. Site Hazards/ Safety There is slippery single in parts. Landowners and Contact Numbers Kristian Oluf Christiansen Fuglafjórður Harbour / Shoreline Type The shoreline is shingle and sediment with larger shingle at the upper shore. A stream runs through the beach at the western end. Clean-up method Remove the bulk oil from the shingle. Where there is sediment lightly rake the oil onto bags.
