1 July 2018 Aloha...CYC goes Hawaiian Our well-attended Polynesian Party had everything Hawaiian from fire and hula dancers to mai tais and roasted pig what a luau! The cruisers returned from a very successful 18-days cruising around the West Coast nine boats strong. Looked like a grand time! June also saw the graduation of the first of three classes of young sailors taking part in the Summer Sailing Camps. 2 2 July Compass Commodore s Corner June was another fantastic month at the Clearwater Yacht Club! We had many great events and it was great to see so many of you participating in so many ways. On Saturday the 9 th the Entertainment Committee converted the Dry Dock and the Tiki Patio into a Polynesian Paradise, hosting a great Commodore Collin Heimensen party with Hula and Fire Dancers and a beautifully executed buffet by your Club s expert kitchen staff. The Weekend of the 16 th featured many of our members rocking it out on stage for Karaoke! We also celebrated the April, May and June Birthday and Anniversaries that night. The Youth Sailing Program is in full swing and the first Graduation was on Friday the 28 th. If you get a chance to attend one of the ceremonies, it is a great example of how your Club is supporting the future of sailing. See you at the Club! CYC Board Highlights The Board of Directors took the following actions at the June 21, 2018 meeting: l Received the plans to paint upstairs and the ladies room in the Dry Dock; replace the dance floor and the foyer wood; and redesign the Ship s Store. l Noted that the roof restoration was successfully finished and completed under budget. l Approved all applications for membership. The next CYC Board Meeting will be Thursday, July 19 th. Visitors to CYC from Hurricane Gulch Yacht Club in San Pedro, Calif., exchanged burgees with Commodore Collin Heimensen recently. Once again CYC members participated and enjoyed so many club activities. Summer months are usually slow since many members vacation and head back to their homes to get away from the Florida sunshine and heat. So if you re one of us who stays, don t hesitate to use our pool that is always cool and refreshing. Ice cold beverages and great food are also available during the summer at the Tiki Bar. Without question CYC is the best place to spend your days and nights. So grab the kids, friends and relatives, and see you at the club! If you enjoy: l Sailing l Imbibing l Dining l Telling sea stories l Cruising in company with other sailboats We re gathering in the Grille on the 4 th Wednesday of each month 6:30 p.m. for drinks and blather, 7 p.m. for dinner. Next Sailors Table will be Wed., July 25.

3 July Compass 3 Waterside By Todd Crosby Fleet Captain The required maintenance around the docks continues to be minimal and the proline is getting a new seat cover this week! Did you know: BoatUS rents EPIRBS (emergency position indicating radio beacons) for the boat and PLBs (personal locator beacons) for the crew. Your crew relies on you to have the essential safety equipment when you go boating, and there is no better way of assuring your safe return to port than having one of these life saving devices on your vessel any time you make a near-shore or ocean passage. Advantages to renting these devices: l No large investment in equipment that has a limited life-span l BoatUS handles the NOAA registration so the unit is ready to go when you get it l BoatUS covers the equipment maintenance l No expensive battery replacement every 5 years l Easy online ordering with no security deposit required What does it cost? The McMurdo Cat II 406 MHz GPS-Enabled EPIRB (aka GPIRB) rents for $65.00 Weekly, plus shipping and the ACR ResQLink 406 MHz Personal Locator Beacon rents for $45.00 Weekly, plus shipping. For more information, enter this web address into your web browser: about. No I didn t get paid for this commercial! This is a service I recently learned about and I thought it was something worth sharing. There are no waterside meetings scheduled now. If there are any topics or concerns that need to be discussed with the group, please let me know and I will schedule a meeting. As always, if you see any needed repairs, maintenance or safety issues around our docks, please be sure to let Tom, Linda or myself know. See you around the club!! 5 July Compass 5 Sailing Activities 2018 Summer Sailing Camp began on June 18. Our new program director, Ned Covel, and his team of Intrepid Adult Volunteers, have been working long and hard to make summer camp 2018 the best ever. It has been a time of transition and the Indian Rocks Family Sailing Association is very pleased that the relationship with CYC has been enhanced in order to make the program an even greater success this year. As always, Junior Sailing programs have been an integral part of the life and tradition of Clearwater Yacht Club. Nothing makes our young sailors happier than to enjoy their time on the water and to celebrate that time during their graduation ceremonies. Please remember that the future of yachting starts with the education, learning, and fun which these kids enjoy during summer sailing camp, and that your presence and encouragement are an integral part of that experience. Please consider stopping by and saying hello to them whenever you are at the Club during the week, and if at all possible, attending graduation. Wishing you fair winds, safe boating, and much success as you continue to lead CYC forward this year. 6 6 July Compass By Rod and Barbara White, Cruising Chairs The Cruisers have just returned from their annual Long Cruise down our West Coast for 18 days with nine boats joining at various marinas on the trip. I asked some of our Cruisers to write about their experiences on this trip to share in our monthly column. Due to space limitations in the Compass, I am including Phyllis and Dick Nordman s article but will the one written by Richie & Phil Shaw to all the Cruisers. THE LONG CRUISE By Phyllis Nordman What a terrific cruise this was! The weather cooperated for cruising as well. Each marina awaited our arrival and eased all of us into our slips like clockwork. Every marina had great amenities. It also had great wait service on the beach and in the pool. Pink Shell Marina was hosted by Cliff and Donna Wyatt and they brought all kinds of fun. They did a wonderful job organizing our days and nights. Games, including corn hole, horse shoes, Sequence and Left-Right-Center brought out a few champs and great sportsmanship. Every restaurant for our entire trip was spot on. We had a great variety, such as Doc Ford s, Nervous Nellie s and Charley s Boathouse. The last night we had a terrific BBQ right at the marina and everyone pitched in from appetizers to dessert. We wrapped the night up with a few games of Left-Right-Center and lots of laughs. Enter South Seas Plantation: All of us had a chance to soak up the sun and play on the beach. We also had food and beverage service at our fingertips. We enjoyed shopping and three wonderful restaurants, the Mucky Duck, Captiva Yacht Club and of course the famous Bubble Room. We found that we have quite a few comedians at our club and we laughed till our faces hurt! Thanks go to our hosts Gary and Sondra Newcomb and Phil and Ritchie Shaw for being awesome hosts Cruises July Longboat Key Club Moorings August Tampa Yacht Club September Commodores Cruise Longboat Key with party at Bird Key

7 Next stop was Boca Grande, where we had more cruisers join us. We rented golf carts and poked around the little town. We ate at a nice place called PJ s Seafood, which accommodated all 18 of us with great food and service. All of us gathered on Rod and Barbara White s boat for munchies and to watch the Belmont Stakes horse race. We all picked horses names out of a pot and Johnny and Phyllis Cardosi picked the same horse and of course won the entire pot. Hmmmm! Our entire group ended up later at the beautiful Gasparilla Inn for a nightcap and talked about how easy the week had been and how everyone was having the best time ever. July Compass 7

8 8 Gulls Tracks By Lynne Shackelford, Gulls President July Compass Many of you know that for more than 40 years the Gulls have a history of gifting to the club. We are proud to have presented the club with more than $50,000 in gifts during that time. Some of the gifts have been very visible while others have contributed to the betterment of the club. You ve probably heard about the piano, but did you know we have donated TWO pianos? And most of us have heard that the chandelier and public address system were gifts from the Gulls. In 2010 we had the pleasure of purchasing dinnerware for the dining room. Well, this year we are pleased to announce that the Gulls have purchased the new menu covers for the dining room and grill. Now you can order your meal from a menu in the new Gulls cover and then enjoy your dinner on a plate purchased by the Gulls. June also saw the Gulls learn about Floral Arraigning from our own club member Phyllis Cardosi at the Ladies Luncheon. Although our numbers were fewer than normal since people are gone, those in attendance had a great time. Speaking of summer travel, we are cancelling the July Luncheon. As much as we would love to play Pool Bingo, it seems that just too many of us are traveling and not in town to enjoy a luncheon. Stay tuned!! Ladies Luncheon s will return in the fall. Watch future Compass articles for details. Chaplain s Log By Fr. Bob Wagenseil, Fleet Chaplain Many years ago, my family spent the 4th of July at anchor near our home port to watch the fireworks display taking place on shore. It was a clear night and we had a perfect vantage point to take full advantage of this patriotic reminder of the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, giving proof through the night that our flag was still there... when suddenly a freelancing example of that proof was launched from a vessel upwind of us, several fragments of which landed on our bimini. This will be the last Gulls Track for a while. We wish everyone a fun and safe summer. See you in the fall. Quick reaction from my dad produced a fire extinguisher and disaster was averted. This was once again a good learning experience for us kids, reminding us not only of the importance of always having proper numbers of working fire extinguishers onboard in readily accessible locations and knowing how to use them, but also of the importance of the legal requirements for flares and their legal and proper use. Lesson number one well learned: flares are emergency and distress signaling devices and are never to be deployed for any other use including recreational entertainment. As we celebrate our month of Independence, we will do well to review our own knowledge of Safety and Distress Signals. By way of a helpful review, the information excerpted in the box (right), is available in its entirety online through the BOAT US Foundation website, Have a happy and 4th of July, fair winds and safe boating! 9 July Compass 9 By Greg Garner, Rear Commodore ALOHA the Hawaiian word for love, affection, peace, compassion and mercy. Both a greeting and a parting. All great descriptions of our Club, it s great members and the fantastic time we had Saturday, June 9th at our Polynesian Paradise Party! Great music and food and a special performance by an island dancing group, including a grand finale fire dance (volcano not included!). Once again the house was packed and John s island cooking was well received. This is where I put in a plug reminding everyone to please, please call and let us know you are coming, even if there are no table reservations! We don t ever want to run out of food. I also want to say a special thanks to Olivia Prince and Christy Crist who were working hard at 10 am that morning to get all those great decorations set up so that everyone was able to arrive at 6-ish to a fantastic island experience. Not wanting the Dry Dock to have all the party fun, the following Saturday was Birthday/Anniversary night with Karaoke! Another packed house upstairs with our new D.J. and the CYC singers rocking the house till the wee hours! Come join us next time and see who among your friends has hidden talents. Don t forget also that we have entertainment at the Tiki Bar/poolside on Sundays from 2-6 pm. Bring the family and relax at your Club with your friends after Sunday brunch. July brings Independence Day, this year on a Wednesday (boo). Of course we ll have the water slide and ringmaster Visual Distress Signals The visual distress signal requirement for recreational boaters states that all boats on coastal waters must be equipped with visual distress signals. There are a handful of exceptions so you should always check your state regulations to be certain you comply. Regardless of exemptions, all boaters should be able to signal for help. Boaters must have current dated U.S. Coast Guardapproved day and night signals for all boats operating on coastal and open bodies of water. Federal requirements are as follows: For boats under 16 in length: Distress signals are required only when operating between sunset and sunrise. If operating at night, one electric distress light or three combination day/night red flares are required. For boats 16 in length or greater: One orange distress flag and one electric distress light, or three hand-held or floating orange smoke signals and one electric distress light, or three combination day/night red flares; hand-held, meteor or parachute type. Tom to keep the kids (young and old) occupied and the much-anticipated great BBQ. July is also Dinghy Poker Run Month. Dust off those dinghies and pump them up, make sure the engines run and get the best water gun you can find! Mark your calendar for July 14th and watch for details coming. Every year this gets better so don t miss out, you ll be the only one not talking about the fun you had! Remember, your entertainment committee meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm. Please come and be part of making this the great club it is! It s your Club Don t be a stranger! See you around the Club! THE BOOK CLUB meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Board Room. All members and their guests are welcome to join our stimulating and fun discussions. If you enjoy reading; this is the place to be! Many of us stay for dinner and if you do plan to do so, please make reservations with Virginia at All books are predetermined by the members prior to discussion. 11 July Compass 11 By Phil Beauchamp, Vice Commodore This committee could have spent all summer relaxing in our chilled pool, but instead we ve been working hard to get ready for our upper-level maintenance shutdown in late August. After installation and the time to cure and complete, our new roof is finished just in time for the rainy season to begin. We had to repair and replace a large 36-foot drainage pipe on the lower level. While this was being repaired, we added additional clean-outs for ease of access in the future. We acquired two new coolers for the Tiki Bar. From flooring to paint, fixtures and finishing touches, we are ready to transform our beautiful Club. You might already have noticed new additions, including the beautiful menu covers donated by the Gulls. As an added bonus during the remodel, we will have the Tiki open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11 am until 7 pm. Gage and friends will be happy to serve you a limited menu poolside. So please come and visit us at the Tiki while the upstairs goes thru its renovation. We have contacted Carlouel Yacht Club, which will be open to our members during our dining room shut down. I will add the schedule for Carlouel s dining hours next month. See you at the Club!
