1 December 2016 Head start on the holidays! November proved to be another glorious month at CYC, kicking off with the Annual Meeting and gathering momentum with a whacky pirate cruise-in from our very own Cruisers. We lost daylight saving time but gained another great dock party with our annual stone crab feast, plus the Gulls and Bow Chasers were back in full force after their summer breaks. Sailing sessions for kids and adults wound up, giving Father Bob a chance to enjoy some time on his own sailboat; the Toys for Tots dinner was hit, as well, and as members were enjoying Thanksgiving dinner at CYC, plans were already under way for December s huge agenda. Stay Tuned! See page 6 & 7 for more Annual Meeting photos See pages 8 & 9 for more Bow Chasers photos See page 4 & 5 for more Sailing Activities photos See pages 10 & 11 for more Cruisers photos

2 2 Commodore s Corner 2016! It honestly seems like yesterday I attended Change of Watch 2015 and was installed as your Commodore. It has been a fast year, actually a fast several years from Fleet Captain, Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore to Commodore. I am honored and blessed to have served as your Commodore the best year the club has had in many, many years, both financially and in membership growth. What a ride I have had and it would not be possible without the support of all our members. I have a few people I would like to Commodore Johnny Cardosi thank personally for their support. First and foremost, my lovely, talented wife, Phyllis. She has supported me through all my years of endless meetings and club functions, never being on time for dinner. She also made all the beautiful flower arrangements on the club dining room tables. I could not have done this without her! Thank you, honey!! I got on the Commodore path by being on the Nominating Committee years ago and encouraging our now Immediate Past Commodore Rowland Milam to accept the position of Rear Commodore. He later said I promised to follow his path if he accepted. Not sure that is how it happened, but the rest is now history. He has been a huge supporter and helped me navigate all the pot holes. Thank you my friend! Many, many thanks to all of my friends and members that supported me over the years in my many club endeavors. You know who you are, so I won t call you out. Especially those that had my back when I came asking for donations for special projects. Everyone should be as lucky as me with good friends. Lastly, but not at all least, thanks to the club management and staff for working day in and day out to keep our club running smoothly. What a good group we have, so, please thank them often. If this sounds like I am leaving the club, I AM NOT. I am simply moving to another chapter in my club life where, to quote my friend PC Hoyt Nichols, they remove your large, color picture from the entry hall to a less glamorous, black and white, smaller picture in the corner, where you hear whispers of he used to be our Commodore back in the day. He says your closest friends now want to sit with the up and coming, younger Commodores. Really? Not my friends, you just wait and see! Here is to the future Commodores, may you have wisdom and the strength to continue to make our club grow and prosper! I am confident you will. See you over in the corner as you occasionally come to bid me hello! 3 December Compass 3 Waterside By Curtis Wold Fleet Captain The October Waterside meeting had continued discussion and efforts on club boat maintenance, dock maintenance (including the replacement and preservation of dock boards and pilings, the need to fix pedestal lighting and recover the concrete pad by the dingy rack), long term (3-5 year) dock replacement, and a review of slip and shore power fees. Since the meeting we are also looking at identifying weak pilings or the need for additional pilings. The next Waterside meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 28 at 6pm. I encourage CYC boat owners to decorate your boats for the holidays, whether you join one or more of the many boat parades in the area each or just want to make the CYC marina look festive. For you Pinterest fans, you can find LOTS of Boat Parade Ideas. Here are a few pointers from an article from the Boat US Magazine in December 2013 titled Designing A Holiday Lights Display for Your Boat, by Tracy Leonard. The entire article can be found at Pete Chambliss, Chief Elf (yes, really) of the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade in Annapolis, Md., says displays can be as simple as a strand of lights along the toe rail or as elaborate as Santa and the Abominable Snowman cage fighting on the bow. Consider outdoor-rated LED lights, which last a long time, use little energy, and produce less heat, thus avoiding fire hazards. Many yard decorations can do double duty on a boat, too, because their size makes them easy to see and they re already graded for outdoor use. AC-powered lights (LEDs are good) can be plugged into an inverter running off a boat battery or a marine gen-set. AA battery-operated lights and 12-volt lights plugged into a 12-volt outlet are other options. String lights above the deck level, inside boat lifelines, in case docking or assistance is needed. Keep connections between strands close to the deck for easy access but high enough that seawater from waves or wake can t reach them. Keep connections away from metal rigging and metal support structures. Don t decorate in a way that interferes with safe boat operation. Doublecheck the weather forecast before leaving the dock so that you can ensure that your boat and your decorations will weather the elements well. Chief Elf Chambliss says that convincing first-time skippers to brave a cold December night on their boat can be a challenge, but once they start, they can t stop. When you hear the roar of the crowd, it s so heartwarming that Fleet Captain Wold s Riva shows how lovely a sailboat looks when dressed for the holidays. you forget the challenges and start talking about what to do next year. In many towns, it s the boaters gift to the thousands of people who come out to watch the parade. Many people have told me that the Lights Parade is the start of their holiday season. Nautical Trivia of the Month: A dilution of rum with water is called what? In 1740 Admiral Vernon, with a view toward reducing drunkenness in his Royal Navy fleet, directed that the ration of one pint of neat rum a day for men and half a pint for boys should be diluted with a quart of water. This was issued in two halves, to the tune of Nancy Dawson, at daily scuttlebutts at noon and 6 pm. I ll owe a drink, not necessarily rum and water, to the fifth person who texts or s me the correct answer. The answer to last month s nautical trivia question was a bit too obscure I got a few guesses but no correct answers for By guess and by God as to a form of navigation akin to dead reckoning, under which a ship s master or navigator (typically older fishing skippers or early submarine captains) relied more on his experience or powers of estimation to bring his vessel safely to her destination. I got off cheap again last month; hopefully I ll owe someone a beverage in December! As usual, I can be reached at cwold@tampabay.rr.com or on my cell phone by text or voice at

4 4 December Compass Sailing Activities By Fr. Bob Wagenseil Fleet Chaplain/Sailing Activities Director The month of November featured some of the best sailing conditions we have had in many months, and this went a long way towards enabling our sailors, young and not-so-young alike, to enjoy their time on the water, and to learn a few new things along the way! Our Tuesday/Thursday After School kids made great progress with their upwind and docking skills. Our Intrepid Adults not only learned how to sail off the west float in tight quarters but they perfected their ability to sail backwards and complete controlled jibes, as well. Our 420 team focused on all aspects of racing including spinnaker work, and our Opti team continued to focus on upwind performance, boat speed and tactics. As in past years, we will be on holiday break during the month of December. We have only one event during that time and it is all about making the holidays a bit brighter for families in need. Our Second Annual Ted Irwin Memorial Sailathon will once again give our kids the opportunity to pay it forward by raising money for the Beach Community Food Pantry at Calvary Episcopal Church Indian Rocks Beach. The Pantry serves hundreds of families each month and our kids are looking forward to making a positive difference for that work this year. (Last year they raised over $5,000!) The Sailathon will take place Saturday, Dec. 3 between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church (1615-1st Street, Indian Rocks Beach, directly behind Guppy s Restaurant). CYC members are invited to stop by and cheer on the young sailors. December is also important for us because early in the month families will be receiving their 2017 program applications covering all classes from January through Summer Camp. Our programs fill up very quickly and it will once again be first come, first served. Finally, for Christians and Jews and many others throughout the world, December is important because it is the Season of Light which continues to be filled with the promise of justice and peace on earth and good will towards all people. May that light fill your homes with the love of family and friends, and your hearts with hope and joy throughout the coming new year. Fr Bob Wagenseil (727) frbob.wagenseil@gmail.com

The Second Annual Ted Irwin Memorial Youth Sailathon to feed the Hungry Time: Sailing from 9:30-1:30 Location: Calvary Episcopal Church st St., Indian Rocks Beach. It s a Marathon Sail! Youth sailors, ages 8-16 will sail small boats NON-STOP for 4 hours. Each participant will have secured sponsors whose financial support will raise much needed funds for the Beach Community Food Pantry. Last year, 35 young people participated and raised more than $5,000 and they are hoping to do even better in 2016! The event is organized and run by the Indian Rocks Family Sailing Association with support from Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and CYC. The Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach serves as principal sponsor and sailing facilities are made possible through Calvary Episcopal Church Indian Rocks Beach. The Ted Irwin Memorial Youth Sailathon is held in honor of the late Ted Irwin whose family were parishioners at Calvary Episcopal Church. Ted Irwin was a legendary yachtsman who as a sailor and yacht builder gained worldwide recognition. Mr. Irwin was the founder and president of Irwin Yachts which for many years was among the major employers in Pinellas County and one of the premier boat builders of the 20th Century. 6 6 burgee exchange Ted and Joan Palango, visiting from Seal Beach (Calif.) Yacht Club, near Los Angeles, exchanged burgees in November with CYC dockmaster Linda Carter. December Compass Positive reports buoy CYC Annual Meeting From start to finish, from the Commodore s summary to the Compass editors report (more like a roast), the 2016 annual meeting presented CYC with the most positive view in many years. The results came from the hard work of every committee, particularly membership and entertainment, and from the judicious oversight of the Club s financials and operations. A special treat was the announcement that PC Hoyt Nichols had managed to get a net $199,000 payment from BP as compensation for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in Yaaaayyyyy!!! By Collin Heimensen, Rear Commodore November was an incredible month at CYC we had live music every Friday night with our famous Prime Rib, plus Bingo, Trivia and more during the week! We kicked off the month with the Commodore s Cruise-In Patio Party. Trivia Night was on the 10 th and the house was absolutely packed! The Club s Annual Meeting was on the 12 th and the band Shades kept the dance floor jumping all night long!! Stone Crab Sunday was HUGE and the Stone Crabs were too! We had a DJ rocking the patio all afternoon. The Bubbly Stuff was flowing at the Champagne Tasting on the 19 th. December will be another great month starting with the Change of Watch on Saturday the 3 rd. We will host the Holiday Boat Parade and Dinner Buffet on Saturday the 10 th. There will be live music every Friday night in the dining room and the CYC Holiday Social will be on December 22 nd.
