1 Commodore s Corner Ahoy all! TELLTALES Whitby Yacht Club Monthly Newsletter Fleet Captain Bart and I were looking over the Club the other day from dock 8. We were both commenting on the vista of boats before us and the fact that this, is what it was all about. Boats, water, great friends, with more friends yet to meet. You can tell that the season is ramping up, as the forest of masts start to appear. The tinkling of rigging can be heard in the wind with the rustling of sails as they are hauled up the forestays and masts. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 Check Out the 2014 Launch Video May 2014 On Launch Day this year, two GOPRO cameras were used to capture the days activities: one mounted facing the Center crane and the other facing the West crane. The GOPRO took a 5MB still photo every 2 seconds. The resultant image file (9,000+ images) were stitched together to create the video file. Enjoy! 2 COMMODORES CORNER CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Our cars (now on autopilot I'm sure) continue to beat a path to Martin's for that missed shackle or block and our hands are showing signs of abuse with bruised knuckles, and perhaps a bit of rope burn. And let's not talk about my back! Ah summer! Have you ever noticed that sailors are truly a great bunch? If you have a question, someone will have an answer (right or wrong). If you need something, someone will likely offer it. If you have something you don't need, someone will be glad to take it. WYC is no different. It is a great community of people helping people who are growing and learning together. What a great group! I have found, that there is often a tendency to take what we have for granted. We can't fall into that trap. Look around. Everything you see, everything you touch, everything you can do, is the result of someone's hard efforts.the efforts of fellow members to make WYC better than it was yesterday. I hope you share the pride that Bart and I felt in looking over the Club from Dock 8. This is a pretty cool place to be! I look forward with you, to a great season. Please overwhelm our guests with kindness and friendship. Let's have a safe season filled with great adventure, great experiences, great times and the meeting of new and great friends. Let's go sailing! See you on the water! Commodore, John Berry 2014 Sailpast June 7 th The 2014 Sailpast Festivities includes: Blessing of the Fleet, Sailpast, and Commodores Ball. Full details for our 2014 Sailpast and Blessing of the Fleet are still to be ironed out, but here is what we can tell you: Saturday Daytime: Sailpast proceedings and reception 11:00am Blessing of the Fleet (Front lawn of the clubhouse). 12:00pm Reception. Light refreshments and munchies available to all. 2:00pm Sailpast Ceremony on the water, commencing around the 9 th mark. And then enjoy a nice afternoon sailing! Saturday Evening: 6:00pm Reception/cocktails (Join us in the Compass Rose Lounge). 7:00pm - Commodores Ball - Dinner and Dance (Our band for the evening will be the returning The Usual Suspects. An incredibly talented local band). Tickets will go on sale soon and will be priced as last years at $45. Book early; last year we sold out. 5 The Good, The Bad and The Ugly! Sharing Our Boating Stories with Friends at the Club Exit.. Stage Down! Whenever my wife and I sail down to the Thousand Islands we always make a point of taking in a theatre production at the Gananoque Play House. The Play House sits on the river and has a handful of slips that are available to people attending the shows. We had tickets for the evening show but no reservation for a dock so when we arrived mid-afternoon we wanted to check in quickly and secure a reservation for the night. With my good wife standing on the bow (her purse already over her shoulder) I approached the dock. Just as she put one foot on the dock the bow started to pull away as the stern of the boat drew closer to the dock. And I have to let you know that this was purely accidental; no man in his right mind would do this on purpose. There may even be an issue with me telling this story! As the distance grew between the bow and the dock there was only one way to go, and that was down. Just too top things off, this all happened during the intermission of the Saturday matinee. An audience of about 250 people was enjoying cocktails on two levels of decking that surrounds the front of the playhouse. The 250 observers let out a simultaneous groan that was consistent with the sound of the home team missing an open net in the seventh game of the Stanley cup playoffs. As they all knew how embarrassing this would be, they left us alone while my wife dragged herself out of the water and scurried into the cabin of the boat. She didn t surface for a while. After, we took a deep breath and decided to slow down. Kind of a funny story now, but if there is something to be learned always take your time when docking. It could be very embarrassing or even worse someone could get hurt (including the helmsman). Oh... and leave the purse on board until the boat is tied up! 6 Marine Facilities Update Another Successful Launch Launch is over and it went very well and in record time! I would like to take credit for that but it was the dedication of the launch crews that made it look so easy. Well done! I know that the members appreciated the efforts of everyone involved to make this happen. It was like watching a finely tuned machine in operation. The winter was long and took its toll on the winter projects and some of them didn't get completed like the dock ramps and hand railings that I had planned but there is always next year. All the docks are in place and the anchors have been set and may need some minor adjustments over the season. The hydro has been hooked up to the docks and seems to be in good working order. The water has been hooked up and I know there are some issues there and some members have taken it upon themselves to correct the problems and I appreciate that as the work crews are finished for the season. We have a supply of hardware in the grounds shed to help with the repairs to the water lines and if you need assistance Vic Rudik or myself will try and steer you in the right direction. 11 Toronto Harbour Safety Day On Saturday May 10 th 2014 I was asked to assist with Safety Day at Toronto Harbour. The Safety Day initiative started over 18 years ago and it was set up to train the summer help that worked on the tour boats in Toronto Harbour. I have volunteered my time for the last 10 years to help make this worthwhile project happen. The training is required by Transport Canada and is known as Marine Emergency Duties and covers First Aid, Fire Fighting, Man Over Board, Abandon Ship Procedures, Deploying Life Rafts, Passenger Safety and Security. The young people taking on these jobs are eager and willing to learn all aspects of the Ship's business and it has always been a pleasure to teach at this event. I know that these young people will give 110% to make your cruise a happy and pleasurable event. 13 Leaving WYC For Now On an early morning a few weeks ago Caroline and I sat on DragonHeart overlooking a near empty WYC parking lot. Our Gilbert 30+ felt very much alone, still in its cradle, while most other WYC boats had been launched so expeditiously two days before. We were feeling a bit sad too, knowing that the truck was about to arrive to take the boat away from Whitby to a temporary home at Georgian Shores Marina in Owen Sound. With my Marine Engineering studies continuing throughout the summer and fall at Georgian College`s Owen Sound campus, bringing the boat up there was the only way Caro and I were going to be able to enjoy sailing. So we`ve reluctantly pulled our keel out of Lake Ontario and are dipping it into Georgian Bay this Saturday. Well, I guess a summer of sailing in Georgian Bay is really not such a hardship... Thanks everyone for making our four years at WYC so enjoyable. We`ve made solid friendships and really enjoy the atmosphere and facilities, so it is our intention to return. It may take awhile though as I`ll be adding to my seatime during the summer of 2015 and will not have time for recreational sailing. We therefore look forward to returning to the WYC fold in the summer of We will try to continue to be involved as SAMs and look forward to seeing the ongoing improvements to the club, made possible by a dedicated and talented group of volunteer members.
