You had expressed interest in teaching sailing this year with LTYC. As you hopefully have already seen, there is a signup for instructors on the LTYC website, and we are still looking for a number of instructors for the regularly scheduled classes as well as the junior classes. Here is the link: docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0aprbem1phs2l dedxwxi1mvljtep0c2s0ve9usjfdeue&hl=en_us#gid=1 I also have a number of individuals who have ed me recently about individual lessons, and would like to know if you would be interested in teaching 1 on 1 or 1 on 2 individual lessons. Please me directly and I will send you the information. Thanks for all your support that makes our sailing education program successful. As a reminder: instructor training day is Saturday, April 21st, more information to follow. - Russ Dorrell All members are encouraged to update their CPR and First Aid training. 3 The View from SCAT 1 Photos by Kim Young, 3/10/2012 On this beautiful March Saturday there were 13 boats participating in the last Frostbite Series race of the season. There were 8 Flying Scotts, three Lasers, one Catalina 22 and one of the city s Capris. Attendance was high, sunshine was plentiful, winds were typically variable, and Wanda s breakfast casserole before and chili afterwards were worth the ride out to the lake. 3
4 The View from Magoodness by Christopher Maginnis, 3/10/2012 On the first race, we were coming down the line toward the committee boat on port tack, and the entire field was on starboard tack coming at us. As the horn sounded, we began to tack across the line which would have put us on a starboard tack. However, had we continued, Starling would likely have ended up under our boat; or as an ornament on the starboard bow. So, Magoodness fell back to port tack, and gave the entire field the scare of their lives! Not to mention, the crew of Magoodness sat in sheer terror as they piloted the big 22 footer through the mêlée. The Catalina 22 displaces 3100 pounds, not including 600 pounds of crew. We looked like an Orca in the middle of a pod of seals. Incidentally, this was the first race series that Magoodness actually finished a race. 4
5 LTYC invites you... LET s go sailing! 6 I crewed with Starling, coming round a pin with the spinnaker pole in hand I heard boats scraping, I dropped the pole, not because of the hit but for about a half a second I was wondering if I was going to end up in the water but it was a very light collision no damage done. I wished I could have seen Starling s face expression when he heard that sound, but for that split second I was about to go into survival mode especially after hearing bout Starling, and Tad s turtleing drill few weeks back... lol... Steve Raper and his crew probably could give you a little more detail about it. We all had a blast that day, very memorable race it was, 1104 made 2nd all three races even though we had lousy starts! The wind was all over the place - Lacy Joyce Photos by Mark Hayes 6

Crouch R mcrouch@guilford.edu What s a Scratch Sheet? A few years back, big regattas started posting scratch sheets on the internet to drum up interest and promote participation. As there is typically no cost to signing up, Scratch Sheets give a good indication of who is thinking about going to an event. It helps the organizers plan and prepare for the event. Last year, LTYC set up a Scratch Sheet in Google documents for its events. It was a good move. If you expect to be at some of our upcoming events, take a few moments to step through the different Scratch Sheets and let us know to expect you. Don worry about last minute change of plans, Scratch Sheets are only an indication of your intentions. If you need crew, want to crew, would like to help with the social, or have some other creative idea, just list it in the Scratch Sheet. The Scratch sheet is available from the home page or the LTYC Website. 10
