3 April Racing at Lake Townsend by Alan Taylor, photos by Michael V. Crouch What an awesome weekend for sailing! Clear skies, temperatures in the 70s and the winds were steady from the Southwest at mph, with occasional gusts to 20 mph. By steady I mean that the shifts were 15 degrees either side of 235! But that pattern held both days. Saturday was the first day of racing for the Lake Townsend Yacht Club Summer Series. Someone will have to explain how the names of the weekends came about, but this one was named Miss Piggy. Seventeen boats came out to the starting line, including three from CSC. The courses were WD with an offset weather mark and gate marks to leeward. The Start/Finish line was set downwind of the gate marks. This made for fantastic spectating from the Signal boat. There were 10 Flying Scots on the line. The racing was tight with only 9 points separating the top 7 boats. At the end of the day it was Ray Merrill (sailing as a guest from CSC) on in first with 31 points, followed closely by John Hemphill with 29, Uwe Heine with 25 and Tom Bews with 25 points. Seven boats sailed in the open fleet with the Heffernans exhibiting their usual fast speed around the course. John F. from CSC also did well in his Laser, taking first in the second and third races. There was some excitement in the third race when Starling misjudged his port tack crossing of Wendell. OOPS! The crash was heard around the lake. The damage to Wendell s new boat was significant. I hope he is successful in getting it repaired soon. I have to say however that I am proud to be affiliated with LTYC. In an impressive display of sportsmanship, Wendell and Alex crewed for Starling on Sunday in the Inter-Club Regatta. Sunday Regatta coverage continued on page 5. 3

5 April Interclub Regatta Sunday dawned overcast, but the winds were still out of the west at mph with gusts throughout the day as high as 21 mph. This was the Inter-Club regatta with CSC. A total of 17 boats registered for the event. On the RC barge we were treated to the beauty of Flying Scots and Thistles planning across the finish line with spinnakers flying. CSC brought out their best and took the challenge handily. Just wait till next year the Chicken will travel East! Thanks to all who served on Race Committee Steve Chabot from CSC, David Duff, Michael Crouch, Phil Leonard, David Leonard, Bob Bass, Adam Zahand, Eric Rasmussen, David Young, Lacy Joyce, Donna Jarzyna, George Shen, Chris Herman, Gabriel Herman And a special THANKS to Wanda and her crew for the usual exceptional food and social management. Crouch R mcrouch@guilford.edu What s a Scratch Sheet? A few years back, big regattas started posting scratch sheets on the internet to drum up interest and promote participation. As there is typically no cost to signing up, Scratch Sheets give a good indication of who is thinking about going to an event. It helps the organizers plan and prepare for the event. Last year, LTYC set up a Scratch Sheet in Google documents for its events. It was a good move. If you expect to be at some of our upcoming events, take a few moments to step through the different Scratch Sheets and let us know to expect you. Don worry about last minute change of plans, Scratch Sheets are only an indication of your intentions. If you need crew, want to crew, would like to help with the social, or have some other creative idea, just list it in the Scratch Sheet. The Scratch sheet is available from the home page or the LTYC Website. 10
