New TBYC Commodore - Eric Hansen Eric was elected Thunder Bay Yacht Club Commodore for a 2 year term at the November 28th, 2013 Anuual General Meeting.

Eric joined the TBYC Board in 2010 in the role of Fleet Captain Sail. He is the owner/skipper of the IMX 38 racing sloop Mongoose.

Commodore s Log The TBYC Annual General Meeting of November 28 th culminated in the anticipated reshuffling of the TBYC Board.

In particular, I would like to thank both Todd Siciliano, who moves from Commodore to Past Commodore, and Chris Bailey, who is exiting the Past Commodore role, for their tireless attention to issues

Box 29136, THUNDER BAY, Ontario, P7B 6P9 CANADA Meet the New TBYC Commodore Profile Eric began keelboat cruising-sailing with his parents in the 1970s while they lived in Newfoundland and he has been cruising and racing ever since. Key to his appreciation of marina facilities was three years in the 1980s spent working at Northern Harbour, a commercial marina on Lake of the Woods near Kenora, ON. While there, he acted as Manager of Services and Docks as well as Manager of the sixteen-sailboat charter fleet. New TBYC Commodore - Eric Hansen Eric was elected Thunder Bay Yacht Club Commodore for a 2 year term at the November 28th, 2013 Anuual General Meeting. Eric has been involved in the TBYC sail racing program since 1994 and became a full TBYC member in His parents, his wife s parents, his sister and two brothers are all TBYC members. Eric joined the TBYC Board in 2010 in the role of Fleet Captain Sail. He is the owner/skipper of the IMX 38 racing sloop Mongoose. His interest in TBYC is generally in regard to facilities and program development, which includes facilities for storage, social/club activities and cruising and member programs. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those departing the Board for their substantial contributions over recent years. In particular, I would like to thank both Todd Siciliano, who moves from Commodore to Past Commodore, and Chris Bailey, who is exiting the Past Commodore role, for their tireless attention to issues surrounding the Prince Arthur Landing Marina re-development. Since the City began this substantial project, there have been many changes within the downtown waterfront and it has taken much effort to ensure TBYC interests have been properly attended. We believe the majority of this work is concluded and moving forward. We hope to re-focus the energies of the Board toward the ongoing initiatives of Mission Island storage-space allocation planning, Mission Island member facilities development, Prince Arthur Landing Marina member facilities development, the fostering of cruising destinations and Sail Racing Program development, to name a few. I also welcome new board members and look forward to working with the new energy and perspectives they will bring to our meetings. A full listing of the Board, along with contact information is presented below. With respect to the future of the Club, a particular interest of mine is development of member facilities and programs at both Mission Island and Prince Arthur Landing Marina. Considering the strength and diversity of our membership, I believe there is substantial opportunity to develop equally strong and diverse facilities and programs for TBYC members. Some momentum has developed in these areas over recent months and we will be reporting to the membership as plans develop and opportunities are discovered. I d also like to mention that on the social front our new Social Director, Sirkka Creagh, has good ideas for energizing the TBYC community and she will be seeking member input to help set the 2014 social calendar. 1

2 TBYC has something to offer everyone regardless if you enjoy power boating, cruising sailing, racing sailing, crewing, etc. The common themes are the water-borne activities made possible by our proximity to the mighty Lake Superior, and I look forward to working together with you to make the most of what we have available right here on our doorstep. There is also a link on the website that will take members to the location of the main proposal document. TBYC members are encouraged to fill-out and submit the survey. 3 Snowbird Party On Dec. 7, 2013, the second annual "Snowbird Party" was held at the Mission Clubhouse, to say goodbye to our members that are going south for the Winter. Since there was no formal Christmas Party this year, all members were welcome to attend the Snowbird Party as announced at the AGM. The party featured a pot-luck supper, beverages and socializing...a good time was had by all. The Clubhouse was beautifully decorated for the season. Many thanks to the guys for doing such a good job. Racing Thunder Bay Yacht Club sailors Jeff Roney and Jim Cameron competed at the 2013 Canadian Finn Sailing Championship, October 25th-27th, 2013 hosted by the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Toronto. Jeff Roney, who is a member of the Canadian National Olympic Sailing Team, placed 2nd while Jim Cameron placed 6th. This regatta is part of the selection process used by Sail Canada to determine who gets on the National Sailing Team. The second part of the selection process will be the ISAF Olympic Class Regatta Miami, Florida this coming January 25th - February 1st, Getting selected and maintaining National Team status is part of the process where ultimately one Canadian sailor will be selected to represent Canada at the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janerio. Who knows maybe we ll see a Thunder Bay sailor winning a Gold Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. th Jim Cameron, CAN 11, finishing race 3 in 4 place and Mike Milner, Director or Sailing for RCYC, previously a top 5 sailor in the world, struggling with the conditions. 3

4 Membership New Members The Executive, on behalf of the Club, would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members approved at the November Executive meeting: Celine & Darren Fisk: Full Membership Wayne Knapp & Paula Charette: Full Membership Neil Parsons & Elizabeth Petrone: Reinstated, Full Membership In Memoriam REGINALD EDWIN ESSA It is with the saddest of hearts that the family of Reginald Essa, age 82 announces his passing away on Monday, December 2, 2013 at home. Reg was born in Kirkland Lake, soon moving with his family to Timmins where he spent his childhood and early adult life. Joining the O.P.P. in 1952, he spent many years being posted in various small northern communities such as Geraldton, Heron Bay and Nipigon where he made many friends. The majority of his career was spent in Thunder Bay where he retired. Reg made many outstanding contributions to the force. In his early career, he decided his diving expertise was something he wanted to explore and contribute to helping families find their loved ones. The later years of his career were spent as public relations and as a school community officer where he was able to teach children and community groups about the OPP and safety for all. Reg was married to Joyce (Hicketts), his beloved wife of 49 years and was a father, friend and mentor to his daughter Deborah (Don passed) and sons Jonathan and David (Moira). Mourning this great loss along with his wife and children are sisters Yvonne Chinn (Sudbury), Doreen Wade (Arizona), Marilyn Wood (Keith) Toronto, brother Ed (Timmins), sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jim Whatley and brother and sister-in-law Ed and Cindy Hicketts (Kamloops) and their lovely families, dear cousins Rosine and Velma Assad, Robert Skaf and all of their families and special grand-friend Gabriella Willan. Family, home, sailing the "REJOYCE" and a good game of cards with friends and family were his devotions. In his younger years Reg enjoyed coaching baseball, curling, skiing, and fishing. In later years he volunteered at Missions to Seaman. Special boating trips to Europe (captained by him) were also highlights of his life with dear friends Judi, Casey Elinor and Brooks. Flotsam and Jetsam Boat Show Season It s upon us again; time to pull out the wish list and see what the boating world has to offer for 2014, especially if your list contains a new boat. The Toronto International Boat Show is a popular show for Club members and it s scheduled for January 11 to 19, Details can be found at: The web page includes links to a 2014 New Product Showcase of boats, motors, equipment, electronics and boating gear. There is also a link to a boat finder to help you locate the boat of your dreams as well as a link to a schedule of more than 140 seminars on everything from basic boating, offshore racing, cruising for couples, to boating adventure in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or the Pacific Northwest. There is also a detailed bio of seminar leaders to give you insight into the depth of expertise you will enncounter at the different seminars. This year, with direct flights from Thunder Bay to Chicago, several other boat shows are now accessible to Club members. There s the Progressive Chicago Boat, Sports & RV Show, scheduled for January 16 th -20 th, 2014 at McCormick Place; you may want to visit ( the Milwoukee Boat Show ( January 17 th -19 th and 22 nd -26 th, 2014 at State Fair Park; and the Detroit Boat Show ( scheduled for February 15 th -23 rd, 2014 at Cobo Center. Other boat shows often frequented by TBYC members are the Vancouver Internatioinal Boat Show, January 22 nd -26 th, 2014 at BC Place and Granville Island (see ); and the Progressive Miami International Boat Show, for the snowbirds among us, to be held Feb. 13 th -17 th, 2014 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Sea Isle Marina and Miamarina at Bayside ( Closer to home is the Minneapolis Boat Show where you can find your dream boat and everything that goes with it at the Minneapolis Convention Center, January 30-February 2, 2014 ( show boasts the upper Midwest s best selection of new boats and hundreds of booths showcasing the very latest in engines, electronics, fishing gear and accessories. Of course, if you can t make a boat show this winter, you can always go the electronic route for a virtual boat show at, among other 4

On the local scene, there are 2 shows of interest, the Central Canada Outdoor Show scheduled for Lowerys Sports Dome February 21 st -23 rd, 2014 ( and the Thunder Bay Marine Dealers Boat Show located at The Coliseum at the CLE from February 25 th to February 28 th. Flag Etiquette Club Member, and frequent Bulletin contributor, Jim Massey passes alongsome ideas on proper marine flag etiquette: Country Flag: The country flag is the principal flag on board and is worn at the most senior position which is as close to the stern of the vessel as possible. Courtesy Flags: As a matter of courtesy, it is appropriate to fly the flag of a foreign nation on your boat when you enter and operate on its waters. There are only a limited number of positions from which flags may be displayed. Therefore, when a flag of another nation is flown, it usually must displace one of the flags displayed in home waters. However, it is hoisted only after the appropriate authorities have granted clearance. Until clearance is obtained, a boat must fly the yellow'q' flag. Often cruising sailors fly both the courtesy flag and the quarantine flag (Q flag below) on entering a foreign port. House Flags or Private Signal: House flags are flown at the port spreaders and serve to indicate membership of associations such as a yacht club, or they are small, custom-designed and custom-made flags that carry symbols standing for the owner, so they can basically be anything. The signal may be flown day or night, but is not displayed when another sailor is in command. (The rule is: the private signal and burgee follow the sailor, not the boat.)
