There has been a lot of excellent club sailing in the last month or so. The next major event is the Dolphin Nationals and Finn Tiger Cup from 18 th to 21st March The forecast projects 10+ knots for the whole weekend and sunshine into the bargain. What a great sailing dream! There are more than 40 boats expected on the water next weekend. With John Geekie as Bridge Officer and his competent team assisting on Bridge, Rescue and on shore, the competitors can look forward to a great event.

Mark Biagio presented a very successful Adult Sail Training Course on 4th and 5 th March last. A word of thanks must also go to all who assisted with this initiative. We are looking forward to seeing the trainees joining the great PSC sailing fleet. I want to encourage our members to support our regular weekend club sailing. The Youth Coaching is going from strength to strength, with more and more youth regularly seen on the water. Our youth racing participants have increased in number and skills to a stage where the Bridge grants them separate starts. Please diarise the PSC Charity Regatta from 29th April 2017 to 1st May 2017, which is also one of the SAS NR Grand Slams. This is a three day regatta promising the best sailing fun for all PSC members and we will also have visiting clubs attending At the 2016 Grand Slam at PSC there were 92 boats on the water! The PSC AGM was held on the 26th February We welcome all the new Committee member who have made themselves available to assist with the various tasks and commitments at the club. Also a word of thanks go to the previous serving members who still continue to assist in sailing the PSC ship forward. The new Exco and various other committees are very enthusiastic and I am sure that we will see some positive results of their appointments very soon. With sailing greetings Regards, Marius Fourie Commodore From the Treasurer For those members who have not yet done so, please pay your subs as soon as possible in order to gain gate access to the club to avoid penalties for late payment.. Ken Reynolds Treasurer

From the Sailing Secretary It's regatta time folks! The dam is full, there is a good wind forecast and plenty of competition too with the Dolphin Nationals (nogal!) and Finn Tiger Cup. WOW! all taking place at our club! You will have great sailing under the expert and watchful eye of John Geekie and his competent team. Ashore you have the club in great shape with great food on offer from Barbara and the wonderful ladies and a well-known venue in which to enjoy relaxing fluid in great company as well, after a fantastic sail! Rescue 1 has now been fitted with an aerial and tested over short distances. The signal is loud and clear!. Water tests will be carried out on the craft this Saturday. Please note that dark blue hull Laser 2, parked next to the main footpath entrance to the club house, has a swarm of bees nesting there. It is in the same row as the power boat shed and can be a problem. Many dead bees have been found in the water too. In this message we are advising the owner, and will also inform Henri, as I am sure that it would be good to save the swarm. I am delighted to be of assistance by continuing as Sailing Secretary. However, I am sorry that I will be missing the competition. Nevertheless, I will be doing duty at this regatta as part of the Mark-Layer Team. See you there! Kind regards, Franci Girdlestone From the Quartermaster We have recently discussed the possibility of a Bring and Braai on the Saturday evening after the sailing during the coming Dolphin Nationals and Finn Tiger Cup, as this has proved popular in the past. It's good to relax and watch the sun set on the water!

The club can provide salads and pap or rolls for a nominal fee of R15.00 per head and charcoal and fires will be available. So bring your own meat, fish or vegetarian fare to braai at the club. We would need to know numbers for catering purposes in advance. For those who are interested, please let us know in good time and anyway before Friday next 17 th March Please contact me by text message or , indicating how many people in your party will be attending. Many thanks. We look forward to seeing you all soon! Kind Regards Barbara Girdlestone GMarkBG@gmail.com From the Administrator Please collected and sign for your rmembership cards which are waiting for you in the Committee Room! Pieter takes pride in cutting and laminating these cards for you, so don t let him down! At the end of this newletter is information on an apartment at the coast which I acquired late last year. Exco has given me permission to advertise this to our members and to offer a discounted price, except over the December/January holiday period, that is. I will be there over Easter. Regards, Wendy From the Development Officer Youth Coaching continues to take place approximately every two weeks on a Saturday or a Sunday, usually beginning at 12 noon. The last scheduled novice Adult Sail Training Course, for which a fee was payable, took place on 4h and 5 th March 2017 and was a great success. The next course will take place when there is sufficient demand. Please let us know if you are interested in attending or whether you can lend a boat to add to the club fleet. For more information on the youth and adult courses please contact Jeanne Stanley jeannestanley@hotmail.fr) the Sail Training Co-ordinator and me, on markus.popken@gmail.com., Regards. Markus Popken, Development Officer

FROM THE YOUTH COACHING CO-ORDINATOR Youth Coaching March time will be a busy month! Claire Walker (Emma's twin sister), who is currently coaching the SA Optimist Team, will be coming to PSC to coach the Northern Region Optimist Sailors on the 25th and 26th of March (These sessions are aimed at experienced sailors. Registration closes on 15th March 2017). We are hoping to outnumber the Finn sailors on the water! The children are very excited about having both Emma and Claire to train them. Further training dates will be planned for April and May this year and will be communicated to our members shortly. If you wish to have more information on youth coaching, please contact Jeanne at jeannestanley@hotmail.fr You may wish to be added to the PSC Youth WhatsApp Group). Jeanne Stanley Youth Coaching Co-ordinator Dabchick 60 th National Championships 10 th -17 th December 2016 Report on the event by Warwick Ham PSC was very well represented at the 2016 Youth Nationals, which included the 60 th Anniversary Dabchick Nationals. All of the four PSC Dabchick sailors were at the event, Jonathan Ham, Christiaan Holm and two new Dabchick sailors, Gideon Van Zyl and Stewart Bremner. Five of the PSC Optimists attended: Jude Stanley, Simon Holm, Melissa Petzer, Alec Stanley and Christopher Petzer, making nine PSC sailors in all. These are the best attendance figures from PSC in the last five or six years that we have been involved in, a remind us of the days of the Klaas s, the Quarmby s and the Fraser s. For our PSC sailors more used to light winds, travelling down to Theewaters can be a nerve-wracking experience, as the wind is known to howl at TSC and the water develops into a short steep chop which is difficult to handle for the Oppie but more especially the Dabbie sailors. Downwind nosedives cannot be avoided and many produced excellent photo opportunities. The picture below is part of a sequence which should be nominated for sport action shot of the year in the local Sailing magazine!

This was the 60 th Dabchick Nationals and Thursday included an impressive line-up of all the boats at the event and a sail past of all the Dabchicks with the older ex-dabbie sailors sailing on the boats again. The day ended with a Gala Dabchick 60 th Dinner where Gerhard Koper gave a talk on the origins of this fantastic boat and several ex-dabchick sailors shared their stories. Not only was the event well attended by PSC Dabchick sailors; they also dominated the results! Day 1 3 races: Sonya Stock - ZVYC, Jonathan Ham - PSC, Greg Hoyle - IYC, 14 th Christiaan Holm, 38 th Stewart Bremner, 39 th Gideon van Zyl. Day 2 3 races: Jonathan Ham - PSC, Sonya Stock -ZVYC, Warwick Strutt - TSC, 15 th Christiaan Holm, 37 th Stewart Bremner, 38 th Gideon van Zyl. Day 3 2 races: Jonathan Ham - PSC, Michael Hoyle - IYC, Warwick Strutt - TSC, 14 th Christiaan Holm, 35 th Gideon van Zyl, 38 th Stewart Bremner. Day 4 3 races: Jonathan Ham - PSC, Michael Hoyle - IYC, Sonya Stock - ZVYC, 10 th Christiaan Holm, 36 th Gideon van Zyl, 40 th Stewart Bremner. Day 5 1 race: Jonathan Ham - PSC, Michael Hoyle - IYC, Sonya Stock - ZVYC, 8 th Christiaan Holm, 36 th Gideon van Zyl, 40 th Stewart Bremner

Congratulations to all who took part, especially to Gideon van Zyl, who helped to sand and spray his boat in the last week before the event and then went on to sail very well in his second Dabchick Nationals and to Stewart Bremner who sailed well in his first Dabchick Nationals. A special mention must go to Christiaan Holm for his dramatic improvement in the last two days, which saw him winning the last race and finishing an impressive 8 th place overall, but especially to Jonathan Ham, the 2016 Dabchick National Champion who sailed very well on the lighter days and really showed the Western Cape sailors how to sail on the heavy wind days.

From the Finn Class Captain The Finn Tiger Cup The Tiger Cup regatta will be held in conjunction with the Dolphin Nationals on the 18 th to 21 st of March, at the Pretoria Sailing Club; that s this weekend! The documentation has been sent out, but please note the following: 1. The entry fee is R250. You do not need to pay before the event, but you will benefit from the discount if you have pre-entered. Just click on this link and follow the instructions: 2. The Dolphin National Championship is a four-day event, while the Finn Tiger Cup is usually a two-day event. We had the option of sailing on all four days, or only on the weekend (two days).thanks for all the responses regarding The Finn Tiger Cup. The vast majority of sailors are in favour of a four day event, and I have informed the organisers accordingly. Several people have asked for more detail regarding the online entry system for the Finn Tiger Cup. 1. Click on this link to open Windsail Click on Events near the top of the page. 3. The Tiger Cup is included as part of the Dolphin Nationals 4. Click on the button entitled Click here to enter this regatta online. 5. A pop-up entry form will appear. You need to fill in all the details. (You will notice that several Finns and Dolphins have entered already.) 6. Click the Enter Online button. (If there are any errors on the entry form, you will be prompted to correct them.) 7. That s it! Payment can be made at the venue. (You may also enter at the venue.) Sailing Shorts: Jeremy will be ordering a batch of hiking shorts from New Generation. They are reasonably priced, and many of us have been using them for years. If you are interested in a new pair, please contact Jeremy and let him know your waist size and so on.

18 th and 19 th of February Sunday 19 th February 2017 was Club Championships. Seven races were scheduled over the two days of the weekend. Cyclone Dineo was still in the vicinity, providing a gusty knot northeasterly on the Saturday morning, which moderated to about knots later in the afternoon. On Sunday the breeze had shifted back to the prevailing north-west. 15 Finns were counted on the slipway on the Saturday (13 of which went racing), and nine on the Sunday. Eric Quarmby made a cameo appearance on the Saturday and easily won the afternoon s racing with two firsts and a second. Eric is a kite-boarder and enjoys the robust stuff. On this occasion he also picked the shifts very well. Paul Thompson had a couple of excellent races, showing good speed and good judgement. Unfortunately these two were not able to sail on Sunday 19 th February last. Rob Scott seems to have found his form again and was in contention all weekend. Jeremy was also right up there, in spite of a capsize on the Saturday. Eric and Tim (on a different day, but in similar conditions)

The racing on Sunday 19 th February 2017 was quite unusual for several reasons. The bridge captain decided not to use club courses and all four races were short Olympics. As a result the action was fast and furious and on one occasion a few Finn sailors lost count of the number of laps completed and headed for the wrong mark! Then, while they thought they were still on the last lap, the next race was started. Unsurprisingly, confusion reigned for a while! Back on shore, I am glad to report, everyone saw the funny side of it Farewell to John Wright and his donation of Sprog spare parts John Wright bade us a sad farewell on Sunday 19 th February We wish him all the best for his new life in the Cape. He has kindly donated some Sprog spares to his friends, so let me know if you are interested in any of the items in the photograph below: Some recommendations for Bridge Captains Here are a few tips originally part of a presentation for bridge crews; they re also useful for sailors: 1. Bridge captains should bear in mind that their first priority is to make their intentions clear to the competitors and any decisions they make should be fair and understandable. 2. The Start Mark must always be laid to Port of the Bridge Boat. 3. If the displayed course is changed at any time before the start, the L Flag will be hoisted with a long sound signal at least two minutes before the next Warning Signal to notify the competitors of the change. 4. The Finishing Line of a shortened course shall be between the Bridge Boat and any rounding mark of the course. The mark selected by the bridge captain does not have to be

a windward mark. Once the course is shortened, the finishing mark is no longer regarded as a rounding mark. 5. The Shorten Course signal (the S Flag and two sounds) shall be made after the leading boat has rounded the last mark before the selected Finishing Line. 6. On shortening course, the bridge captain will normally attempt to position the Bridge Boat so that finishing boats leave the finishing mark on the same side as they would have left it while sailing the course. However, in cases where this is not possible or desirable, boats will always cross the line from the direction of the last mark regardless of whether that mark was left to port or to starboard during the race. 7. If a full, un-shortened course is sailed, a separate finishing mark (usually a yellow buoy) may be laid in the vicinity of the Bridge Boat. However this is not compulsory and it is normal practice at PSC to use the last windward rounding mark as the finishing mark (as described above for shortened courses).
