2 CLUB NEWS AND EVENTS Bruce Furman General Manager, CCM I hope everyone is enjoying the start of the beautiful Fall weather! It has been a great boating and social season at the Club; and as always, we want to thank you for your support this season and in years past. I want to send out a special thank you to all the people who made this year s Peninsula Cup Regatta and Oyster Roast a huge success. We couldn t do it without the efforts of the following members, who volunteered their time to make Lake Normans Premier Regatta the BEST: David Goodman, Jim Hill, Bill Sorvillo, John Killeen, John Kosicki, Steve Hosler, the volunteers of the Race Committee and all the on-shore volunteers. Thank you to Jenna, Blair, Ian and Adam who put on a fantastic Junior Regatta. Lastly, thank you to my team, who works tirelessly on this event and every event all year long. Commodore s Comments Vice Commodore, Bill Sorvillo With cool mornings and beautiful mid-day Carolina blue skies, October offers up so many social and boating activities to enjoy at the Peninsula Yacht Club; in fact, it has to be one of my favorite months of the year. Whether you are a social or yacht member (power or sail), there is something for everyone during the month of October. The club will be celebrating Oktoberfest, serving up some great German beers paired with traditional Oktoberfest eats on Thursday, October 5th. It's also a busy month for our sailors with the Fall Sailing Fellowship Series continuing through the month of October, along with the annual Pumpkin and Leukemia Cup Regatta on Saturday, October 14th. Be sure to check out the Sailing Corner in this edition of 'The Watch' for details and show your support for our PYC sailors this month! One of the club s favorite annual events has become the Father/Daughter Dance that will be held on Saturday, October 6th. Reserve a table with your little girl for dinner and then join others in the Commodore s Room for dancing and desserts - a sure way to build long lasting memories that our daughters will cherish for years to come. We round out the month with our annual Adult Costume Party and Haunted Harbor festivities including kids games, costume contests and trick-or-treating! With the holidays fast approaching, our Club continues to deliver opportunities for fun, family, and fellowship - be sure to take advantage of everything Our Club has to offer! 2 PeninsulaYacht.com

4 MARINA & BOATING Harry Smith Marina and Aquatics Manager Getting ready for Fall Fall, as you know, is the best time for boating! Cooler days, calmer water and less people. This really makes this time of year prime boating time. Fall is also a great time to assess things, especially after a busy boating season. Suggested items to assess Shore power cord- inspect and replace if needed. Call the marina for an inspection! Dock line- replace any frayed or weathered dock line. Make sure line is properly sized for your boat size. Covers- properly sized and secure, snaps, tie downs, etc. Call marina for recommended canvas companies. Boat condition- scheduled a full detail or a boat wash to maintain your investment Routine Maintenance- oil changes, impellers, spark plugs, etc. Marina Manager Reminder About mid-september we experienced some pretty strong winds, thanks to major hurricane Irma! The storm, thankfully, stayed further west of the NC area so we were spared the higher winds and rain. The original path called for mph gust and up to 5 of rain. Therefore, we made you all aware of the incoming weather, via , so you all could take the necessary precautions. I was very pleased to see during our dock walks that you all heeded our warnings! My thanks to you all! North Carolina weather can be very unpredictable. Always be ready for the best and prepared for the worst! Winterization Workshop Saturday, October 7 10:00 am - 12:00 pm When do I winterize or should I? What are the risks involved in the geographical location we live in? These are just some of the questions that boaters might have. Enjoy this workshop of open discussion and knowledge. Please make your reservation by contacting Harry Smith at ext 28 or by ing hsmith@peninsulayacht.com. Gate Code Change October 1 All gates will have the code of PeninsulaYacht.com
5 The Sailing Scene Jim Hill, Sail Fleet Captain The 2017 Peninsula Cup Regatta is in the record books. I hope everyone who participated in the Regatta or enjoyed the Oyster Roast at PYC had a wonderful time. I want to take this opportunity to formally thank all of the volunteers who made the Regatta a success. We had 10 volunteers on the Race Committee, some of whom were key in planning activities as well, and 8 on the Concierge Desk. Special recognition goes to our Regatta Chairman, Steve Hosler, for his excellent organization, communication and persistence in accomplishing all of the tasks required for a major regatta. I also want to recognize our Seasonal Sponsors, MarineMax and Foreign Cars-Charlotte and our Partner, Lake Realty. Without the support of all of these folks we would never have been able to have a successful Regatta. BOATING AND SAILING There is more sailing this fall on the PYC calendar and we encourage experienced and new participants. The Leukemia Cup Regatta and Pumpkin Cup Junior Regatta are on October 14th. Registration is open for Spinnaker, non-spinnaker and Cruising Classes at: The PYC Fellowship Series Fall Races have already begun with the first race on September 10th. Additional afternoon races are scheduled October 8th and 22nd and November 5th and 12th. I hope to see additional boats out for these casual races in the hopefully more consistent fall breezes. There is also another combined Sail and Power raft-up scheduled for October 7th. The August raft-up was a great time out on the lake; with 15 boats participating and many wanting to linger and enjoy time beyond the planned raft break-up. Try not to miss the next one.
