1 62 PACEMAKER FLUSH DECK MOTORYACHT OPERATIONS MANUAL Welcome Aboard! Every successful voyage begins and ends with proper planning. Familiarize yourself with the various systems outlined in this manual. This boat has many features designed for your comfort, convenience and safety. Proper use and thoughtful care will ensure that your trip will be both safe and relaxing. PACIFIC GEM is a 1975 Pacemaker, wide-body, flush-deck motor yacht. She is an unusually comfortable motor yacht. Her hull is 62 in length, while her overall length is 70. The yacht s interior was completely re-done in 2000 and is very modern and comfortable throughout. She has five staterooms and a very large aft salon, where there is a wet bar and a great home entertainment center. The entertainment center contains a quality stereo system for playing radio, tapes, CD s and DVD s and VHS tapes. There is a new flat screen TV to accommodate tapes & DVD. The salon has an over-large, custom-built, L shaped couch, which contains a queensize pullout hide-a-bed for overflow sleeping. There is a thoughtful, large, power window, black in color, to visually and audibly screen the aft salon from the pilothouse. This comes in handy for occupants of both rooms. There is also a thick lexan door to totally close off the salon from the pilothouse and the rest of the boat. A pair of large sliding doors closes the main salon from the aft deck area. The aft deck is the location for a large barbecue grill. The swim step is accessed through a gate in the transom end of the aft deck enclosure via a ladder on the transom. There is a large command bridge accessible via a stair/ladder from the pilothouse, the forward portion being enclosed for the comfort of the yacht s captain and guests who seek shelter from wind and weather. The large aft portion of the bridge deck is where the rigid inflatable dinghy is cradled. A rail dodger for privacy and sunbathing out of the wind encloses the bridge deck. 1

2 The aft, master stateroom has a king-size bed and an ensuite head and shower. There are lots of drawers and two hanging closets in this stateroom, for storage. Two queen-size staterooms are located forward of the aft stateroom on the starboard side of the vessel. Each of these staterooms has a hanging closet and lots of drawer storage. A large head with stall shower services both of these staterooms, which is located across the hallway on the port side. Up the stairs from the aft staterooms and down the stairs from the mid-ship pilothouse and aft salon, is where the galley and dining area are located. The galley has all of the conveniences of any modern kitchen in most homes. The dining area is an L shaped settee with comfortable stools to round out the dinette seating. Forward of the galley area is a fourth queen-size stateroom with a second single bed on the opposite side of the room. Again, lots of storage. Forward of this stateroom is the fifth stateroom which contains a pair of ample over and under bunks, an ensuite head and shower (which can also service the 4 th stateroom, although most guests will use the middle head due to privacy issues) and a large washer and dryer. This is also where the engine room access door is located. The living areas of the boat have large windows for maximum viewing opportunities while underway or at the dock. Each stateroom has its own TV with VCR and remote controls. PACIFIC GEM also has a water maker available There is a large tool chest, with a reasonable complement of tools, located forward in the engine room near the water maker. PACIFIC GEM is cooled and heated via seven reverse-cycle heat pumps, which enable you to zone-control both heating and cooling of the yacht s interior. PACIFIC GEM s Navionics package is state-of-the-art for your peace of mind while underway and to make trip planning and navigating your way through the islands a breeze and very accurate. 2

4 IMPORTANT POINTS: If you are piloting the PACIFIC GEM, yourself, as opposed to being operated by a hired captain, be sure that you are fully briefed on the yacht s many on-board systems to assure yourself and your crew that your cruise will be both safe and enjoyable. Because of PACIFIC GEM s flush deck and aft cabin configuration, your crew must be capable of rendering all necessary assistance in handling the vessel around the dock and making it secure. PRE-START CHECK LIST: Before you operate the vessel for the day, do an inspection of the mechanical systems, most of which are found in the engine room. Any problem found is much easier to fix while securely tied up at a dock, or even at anchor, than it is while adrift, mid-channel, somewhere. The engine room has both 110v & 12v lights. The 110v breaker for the engine room is in the 110v panel, which is found in the upper section of the main electrical panel located in the galley/dinette cabinet on the port side of the vessel (110v lights only work while plugged into shore power or when one of the Generators is running). The 12v breaker is in the 12-volt panel situated in the lower right hand section of the same main electrical breaker panel. The actual light switches for the engine room are immediately above the engine room door, located in the forward stateroom. MAIN ENGINES: Grab a flashlight (it will come in handy) and enter the engine room via the door in the forward stateroom. It will also be smart to have a couple of paper towels in hand for wiping dipsticks clean. If the last person to use the boat was a good neighbor, you will find a roll of paper towels located on the generator room bulkhead forward of the port engine. Check oil level in main engines. The dipsticks are located down low, near the center of the engines facing the centerline of boat. Check transmission oil levels via dipsticks in transmissions. Transmissions take the same oil, as do the engines. Check fresh water coolant level in expansion tanks on top of engines. 4

5 Check: bilges for water; general condition and tension of belts; hoses and fuel lines. NOTE: The engine hour meters are attached to the engine room ceiling all the way aft, amidships. The aft meter is for the port engine, the fwd. is for the starboard. (The port engine hours read double the actual hours.) CAUTION! Beware of accidentally hitting or snagging clothing on the fuel valve for the port main engine. It is the yellow handle near the Racor filter, just forward of the port engine, near the centerline of the vessel. Add engine and transmission lubricants as necessary. All engines and transmissions use the same type of oil. Only Delo 400, preferably weight should be used. SEA STRAINERS: At the rear of each main engine, mounted to the inboard stringer, is a large sea strainer. This is sometimes called a sea water filter. It is necessary to periodically (certainly at least every morning) check to make sure that there is nothing in these strainers which would, in any way, impede the normal flow of water to the engines. If a visual inspection shows sea weed or any marine growth or other foreign object(s) inside the glass, close the seacock at the water inlet in the hull, open the sea strainer and remove and clean the stainless steel strainer, which should remove foreign material. Carefully replace the strainer, making sure that it fits exactly in place as it was designed to fit. Then close the filter tightly and open the seacock before starting the engine. GENERATORS: PACIFIC GEM has two generators: An 8.5 KW Onan, in the engine room on the starboard side, and a 30kw Northern Lights, in its own engine room, portside, forward of the port, main engine. For most of your 110v requirements, the 8.5 KW will be sufficient. If excessive space heaters are used or heating and air conditioners operated, the 30 KW will be necessary. 8.5 KW Onan Check oil dipstick is down low on engine, aft. Check fresh water coolant in expansion tank. Check sea-strainer for obvious obstructions. It is situated between the generator and the starboard main engine. 5

6 30KW Northern Lights In the engine room, open the double doors, port side, fwd., and immediately aft of the engine room entrance door. Check the oil level and coolant levels. Add either, as necessary. (Check the coolant level through the radiator type cap on the expansion tank at the front of the generator engine.) Check the sea-strainer just forward of the generator. The sea-strainer is above the water line so it can be checked without closing the thru-hull. BATTERIES: Periodically check water level in starting batteries, house batteries and generator batteries. The batteries are in boxes outboard of each main engine, all the way aft by the engine room bulkhead and adjacent to each generator. Add tap water as necessary. There is a hose attached to a water valve in the engine room, for this purpose. STARTING MAIN ENGINES: After your engine room check-over, you are ready to start the main engines. ** Before starting main engines, be sure that ALL ELECTRONICS ARE OFF! Voltage surges and drops, such as occurs when starting large diesel engines, can do permanent damage to most navigational electronics. Start the starboard engine first, then the port. Make sure gearshift controls are in neutral. Engines will not start unless gearshifts are in absolute neutral. Move throttle forward slightly. Turn on engine ignition switch and press the Start button next to the key. Release it as soon as the engine starts. (The buzzer you hear indicates no oil pressure and will stop buzzing as soon as there is oil pressure.) In the unlikely event that the starting battery voltage appears to be weak, depress the rocker switch, in the center of the console marked parallel, to S side, and then press the start button for the starboard engine. Repeat the process using the P on the rocker switch for the port. This parallels the two starting battery banks for maximum starting power. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: The ALLISON MARINE GEAR transmissions 6

7 are slow to engage until the engines have warmed to operating temperatures. It is advisable not to attempt to move the vessel until engine temperatures have begun to rise on the temperature gauges. In all cases, shift only at dead-idle engine speeds to avoid damage to transmissions, and worse. Observe the readings on the temperature gauges, voltmeter, oil pressure and gear oil pressure gauges. Start each engine independently and monitor each set of gauges. As soon as the engines are started, walk to the stern of the vessel and visually observe the exhausts to make sure that water is flowing from the exhausts. If it is not, immediately kill the engines and check sea cocks, thru-hulls, pumps, belts, sea strainers, etc., to determine cause, and correct as needed before re-starting engines. While under way, frequently monitor all gauges, including transmission (gear) oil pressure, as this is your best method of assessing the vessels performance. PACIFIC GEM seems to cruise most comfortably at 1700 to 1800 RPM. This is not only a comfortable speed but it is quite efficient for fuel consumption, as well. ENGINE SHUTDOWN: IMPORTANT: DO NOT TURN OFF KEY TO SHUT DOWN ENGINES. This will cause damage to the alternators. Make sure that engines are at absolute dead idle speed. Depress engine Stop button until engine completely dies. Turn off key. Repeat for other engine. (The buzzer sound indicates loss of oil pressure.) FUEL SYSTEM: There are three fuel tanks on board, which supply fuel to the main engines and the two generators. The starboard tank is approximately 25 gallons larger than the port tank, due to the fact that both generators draw fuel from the starboard tank. There are no fuel source options for the generators so it is important to watch the fuel level in the portside fuel tank so as not to run it out of fuel. Never let it run lower than ¼ full. The starboard tank holds approximately 300 US gallons while the port tank holds approximately 275 US gallons. There is a third fuel tank located beneath the bed in the aft stateroom. Its capacity is approximately 300 US gallons. The fuel filler caps are located on either side of the vessel, on the deck near the pilothouse doors and, for the aft tank, on the transom. It is generally easiest to carefully carry the necessary fuel hose through the pilothouse to reach the other side of the boat to fill that tank. 7

8 FUEL MANAGEMENT VALVES: You will find the fuel tank selector valves located beneath one of the steps leading to the staterooms passageway, leading aft from the galley/dinette area. Please note that there are two valves and three tanks. One valve is for each main engine. You can select the fuel source for either engine by choosing either the saddle tank or aft tank. The returned fuel automatically returns to the selected tank. It is important to note that there are only two fuel source choices for either main engine. IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL NOTE: In the unlikely event that you should run a fuel tank dry or air enters the fuel system by some other means, the engine will not re-fire or run until the air is purged from the system to that engine. It will be necessary to, first of all, find the source of the air and solve that problem (put fuel in empty tank, switch to tank with fuel in it, etc.) To purge the system and prime the engine, you will find an electric fuel-priming pump located on the front of each engine. Beneath each pump, you will find a switch, which must be engaged to turn the pump on. Let it run for 15 seconds or so and then open the throttle 1/8 th of the way forward and start cranking the engine using the ignition start switch. It should start up and run within a few cranking revolutions of the engine. Each engine, including the two generators, has a Racor primary fuel filter. If it should become necessary to change fuel filters, due to contaminated fuel, it will also be necessary to bleed all air out of the fuel system to enable that engine to start and run. For the main engines, it will be necessary to utilize the priming pumps described above. Also, in each case, there is a quarter-turn fuel shutoff valve ahead of the filter. If the tank being utilized has sufficient fuel in it, you should be able to gravityfill the fuel filters by opening the quarter-turn valves (which must be open to allow fuel to flow through the filters) ahead of the fuel filters and allowing fuel to flow into the filters until completely full. Allow all air to bleed out through the bleed plug in the top of the filter top before tightening it. ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS: This yacht has a vast array of electrical circuits and devices. The electrical system is generally divided into three subsystems: 220 volt AC, 110 volt AC and 12 volt DC. This vessel s potential to consume electricity can exceed dock s capacity to provide it. When an electrical device or circuit is not needed, be sure the device and the circuit are turned off. ELECTRICAL PANELS AND GENERATOR CONTROLS: 8

9 This main electrical panel is in the galley, portside cabinet. The panel across the top controls 110-volt service, with the respective uses identified at the individual switches. The panel in the lower left is for 220-volt service, which includes the galley range and the water heater. The breakers on the right are 12 volt for the Vacuflush heads, shower sumps, etc., and they are all identified. In the lower center of the panel are the controls for the 30 KW generator. Near the center of the console is the remote start-stop for the 8.5 KW genset. (NOTE: the inverter also powers the second column of 110-volt breakers on the main panel. More on this later) An Auxiliary 12-volt panel is located under the helm cabinet in the Command Bridge. This is the breaker panel for all ships electronics as well as 12-volt house lights. The breakers are identified. Salon lights: The breaker for all 12-volt lighting is in the Auxiliary12 volt panel under the helm in the pilothouse. (The switch for the salon lights is above the salon wet bar on the ceiling.) ELECTRICAL SOURCE SELECTORS: The electrical source selector switches are located behind a triangular door under the stairs from the galley to the pilothouse. One switch selects between port or starboard shore power sources. The other switch selects between generators or 50 amp or 30-amp shore power. SHORE POWER: Two shore power inlets are located on each side of the vessel, amidships near the pilothouse doors. There are inlets for 30 amp and 50-amp service, whichever is available. The switches to utilize either port or starboard inlets are behind the triangular door under the steps that lead from the pilothouse to the galley. **The main breakers for 30amp and 50 amp service are located in the forward end of the salon on their respective port and starboard sides below the windows. NOTE: You cannot use all of the 110-volt circuits with only 30-amp shore power source. Priority should always be given to the battery chargers to recharge house and starting batteries. Watch the 110-volt amp meter and do not exceed the limits of the AC source that you are using or you will trip the main breaker. It is also possible to trip the 50 amp main breaker when using too many of the 220-volt and 110 volt circuits at the same time. This vessel can easily draw in excess of 60 amps. ADDITIONAL NOTE: Shore Power Cords and Adapters are normally stored just inside the portside entrance door in the cabinet behind the helm seating. 9

10 GENERATORS: When shore power is unavailable, ample power can be provided by either of the two generators. IMPORTANT: before starting either generator be sure you have selected the correct AC source via the selector switch, which is located behind the triangular door under the steps leading from the pilothouse to the galley. Even though the generator engine is running, you must still select that generator as your power source before you will realize any power at the breaker panel. 30kw GENERATOR: Before starting the generator, it is advisable to minimize the number of 110 volt and 220 volt breakers that are turned on. The Northern Lights control panel is in the lower center of the electrical panel. Press the Pre-Heat toggle to the right and hold it for 20 seconds. The panel lights will come on, as will the electric fuel pump. After 20 seconds, and while continuing to hold the preheat switch, press the Start/Stop toggle to the left to engage the generator starter. The generator will begin to crank over. When the engine begins to run, release the Start toggle while continuing to hold the pre-heat switch for another 10 seconds before releasing it. Dial the AC source selector switch (under the stairs) to the 30kw position. The voltmeters in the panel will register 110 volts and 220 volts to indicate which circuits are alive. Slowly begin to switch on desired circuits beginning with the main breakers for each circuit set. Never run the generator for less than 30 minutes. It is best to run it for an hour at a time or more. To turn off the generator, reverse start-up process by switching off all circuits and main breakers. Push the generator Start/Stop toggle to the right until engine completely dies. 8.5 KW GENERATOR: Before starting generator, turn off all 110 volt and 220 volt breakers. Start the Onan 8.5 KW generator from the remote panel near the center of the electrical console. Depress the thumb rocker switch downward to the Pre-Heat position for 30 seconds. 10

11 (A small light in the switch will light to indicate that the glow-plug circuit is live.) After 30 seconds, rock the switch upward, which engages the starter motor and will start the generator. As soon as the engine starts, release the switch. Dial the AC source selector switch (under the stairs) to the 8.5 KW position. The voltmeters in the panel will register 110volts and 220 volts to indicate which circuits are alive. Slowly begin to switch on the desired circuits beginning with the main breakers for each circuit set. When finished using the generator, turn off most of the breakers and then press the rocker switch downward and hold until the engine completely stops. Should this generator become overloaded, it will trip a master breaker located on the side of the generator. It will be necessary to reset this breaker and reduce load or else use the 30kw generator. INVERTER: There is an inverter that runs selected 110 volt AC circuits when silent AC power is desired and shore power is unavailable. The second column of breakers on the AC panel operates those circuits identified on their respective breaker switches. The remote panel to operate the inverter and inverter charger is located on the port side in the companion way stair between the pilothouse and galley. Leave this charger on at all times. Caution must be used when operating the inverter as it will quickly discharge the batteries. Turn off all unnecessary circuits and lights when not in use. Recharge with shore power or either generator as necessary. ELECTRIC WATER HEATER: The electric water heater runs off the 220-volt system. It can be used only with the generator operating unless on 50 Amp/220 volt shore service, when available. The circuit breaker is on the 220-volt panel. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Do not use the electric water heater if the water tanks are very low or if they run dry. The electric element may burn up if the tank has no water. 12 VOLT SYSTEM: The 12-volt system runs the electrical systems necessary to operate many of the systems on the vessel. Bilge pumps, water pumps, electric toilets, navigation lights, electronics, etc., are 12-volt systems, as are most of the house lights. The main 12-volt panel is located on the lower right half of the electrical panel console, 11

12 portside in the galley. Use only the circuit needed while keeping the others off. There are sufficient lights and other 12-volt devices to drain the house batteries of power if they were left on during a long evening. The auxiliary 12-volt panel is under the helm cabinet in the pilothouse. All of the breakers for 12-volt lights and navigation electronics are located in this panel. BATTERY SWITCHES: The battery switches are located in the engine room adjacent to the corresponding batteries. You should leave these switches on unless the boat is going to be left unattended and with out shore power for 24 hours or more DOMESTIC WATER SYSTEM: Pacific Gem carries approximately 200 gallons of water in a belly tank. Great care should always be taken to protect the quality of the water in this tank. Always use a hose that is known to be clean to fill the water tank. The filler cap is located on the starboard side of the vessel, on the deck near the pilothouse door and also near the starboard fuel tank filler. NEVER FILL BOTH FUEL AND WATER TANKS AT THE SAME TIME. Be very careful to get the water in the water tank and the fuel in the fuel tank. Fuel in the water tank is impossible to remove from the tank or plumbing and will necessitate the removal and replacement of the entire domestic water system, including tanks, pump and plumbing. Located at the bottom of the main electrical panel in the galley, portside cabinet is a water tank gauge, monitor your water usage on a daily basis. It is advisable to top up the water tank on a daily basis to avoid running out of water at an inopportune time. MARINE HEADS AND HOLDING TANK: This vessel has three heads, each with an electric Vacuflush toilet. It has one holding 12

13 tank. ELECTRIC VACUFLUSH TOILETS: It is critical that every member of the crew be informed regarding the proper use of marine toilets. Marine heads are not at all like your toilet at home. NEVER dispose of paper towels, tampons, Kleenex, sanitary napkins, household toilet tissue, undigested food, etc., in marine toilets. [In the event of seasickness, DO NOT USE THE MARINE TOILETS. (Over the rail is a better choice.) The valves, openings and pumps are extremely small and will clog if overloaded.] A clogged toilet can be very expensive to repair, leave a huge mess and potentially ruin a vacation. In nearly all cases, the problems that occur with a marine head are due entirely to misuse by the operator. Seagoing plumbers are very expensive, so heed the above cautions and avoid the cost and aggravation associated with a plugged or broken head. To ensure troublefree operation of these marine heads, use only dissolving marine toilet tissue. Nothing else will work. Yes, it s more expensive than regular tissue, but in the long run, it s cheap. To operate the electric toilets, make sure the breakers are turned on at the 12-volt panel in the portside galley cabinet. VERY IMPORTANT: VacuFlush heads use fresh/domestic water. The water tank must be adequately full and the water pump breaker must also be on. With your toe, lift the foot lever next to the toilet to bring water into the bowl. Then, press the foot lever all the way down to flush, and hold it down for an additional three seconds to flush everything through the line to the holding tank. This toilet is operated by vacuum, which is the sound you hear when you push the foot lever down. It also empties the bowl instantly. Y VALVES AND HOLDING TANK DISCHARGE: The Y-valve is employed to direct the effluent either into the holding tank or directly overboard. There is one Y-valve for the entire system. The gray-colored Y-valve is attached to the underside of the engine room ceiling, outboard and above the port engine. The valve directs the effluent directly overboard when the long end points forward. The valve directs the effluent to the holding tank when the long end points aft. When operating the Y-valve, be sure to move the handle all the way to the stop. 13

14 BE SURE you are familiar with applicable laws concerning use of holding tanks and dumping of sewage overboard. In almost all legal applications, it is required that the heads empty directly into the holding tank and that the holding tank be emptied either at a shore-side pump out facility or in open waters, off-shore. With a normal quantity of guests, it is wise and necessary to empty the holding tank daily, or, at maximum, every other day. HOLDING TANK: The holding tank capacity is approximately 30 gallons. It is located in the aft port corner of the engine room. IMPORTANT: You must be mindful of the extent of your crew s use of the holding tank. NEVER overfill the holding tank. It is possible to break a hose, clog a vent or burst the tank if it is used when it is full. The result is an indescribable catastrophe and a very costly repair bill. Pumping out the tank is done in one of two ways. There is a deck pump out, starboard side, for use with marina pump-out or the macerator pump-out is in the engine room, forward of the port engine, adjacent to the 30 KW cabinet. MACERATOR: The macerator pump is black in color and is located on a shelf on the extreme port side of the engine room, immediately forward of the three vacuum pumps for the three VacuFlush heads. The valving for macerator use is located in the same corner of the engine room as is the macerator, along with instructions for use of the valves. To pump holding tank overboard with the macerator, turn the white handle to point inboard. Open the thru-hull valve that is immediately aft of the generator room bulkhead. (This MUST be done prior to starting the macerator). The macerator switch is the chrome knob on the shelf end, above the 2nd thru-hull by the generator room bulkhead. Listen carefully for macerator s operation. When pitch of motor goes high, discontinue operation. It is strongly advised that the engines be shut down for this procedure, as it is nearly impossible to hear the sound(s) of the macerator pump and motor when the boat s engines are running. NEVER run macerator for lengthy periods or when holding tank is empty so as to prevent burn out. This is another costly problem that can be avoided by heeding the cautions. When finished with the macerator, close the thru-hull valve. To pump the holding tank out at a marina pump out, via the deck discharge suction opening, the Y-valve handle must be pointing outboard. The deck suction opening appears to be similar to the fuel and water fill openings, but is clearly identified as WASTE. 14

15 ANCHOR WINDLASS AND DAVIT SYSTEM: WINDLASS: First of all, it needs to be noted that the main overload breaker for the anchor windlass is located in the engine room crawlway, immediately forward of the port main engine, and immediately forward of the engine room bulkhead near the ceiling. This will only trip if the windlass is grossly overloaded and must be reset before the windlass will operate again. The primary on/off breaker is located on the DC Distribution panel located in the lower cabinet in the pilothouse console on the starboard side. There is a pair of foot switches on the deck, adjacent to the windlass motor. One is for paying out chain and the other is for retrieving chain. There is a safety lock to flip onto the chain to prevent it from running out accidentally. Be careful to keep fingers, toes and other appendages away from the chain and wildcat when windlass is operating. The windlass can also be operated from the flybridge by the two green buttons to port of the flybridge wheel. However, no matter which station is used for anchoring or retrieval, the safety lock must be disengaged from the anchor chain. ANCHORING: Always use proper anchoring procedures when anchoring. Bring boat to a complete stop before lowering anchor. To be safe, let out approximately five feet of chain for every foot of depth. Back the boat down on your anchor and stretch the chain to make certain that the anchor will hold. This is called, setting the anchor. Monitor vessel s position periodically after setting anchor to see that anchor remains set. This is important if it becomes windy or there is a current. When retrieving the anchor, (weighing anchor) be sure to have both engines running. Move the vessel forward to a position approximately over the anchor. This will make it relatively easy to break the anchor free from the bottom. Never tow the boat forward using the windlass. Post a watch to watch for when the anchor is about to break the surface of the water to alert you to stop the windlass to prevent the anchor from swinging into the bow of the boat. It is important to follow this procedure, as failure to do so can easily result in further setting the anchor and making it impossible to retrieve. This can make for a very dangerous and costly situation from which to extricate the boat and 15

16 yourself and your guests. When retrieving the anchor, care should be taken that the anchor does not swing into the bow and that the shank is guided over pulpit rollers. Stop the windlass immediately. From that point, slowly retrieve the anchor to its nesting position in the pulpit roller. This is the correct time to wash the mud from the anchor, the chain and, then, from the deck. *NOTE: Anchor rode color code: White & blue - alternating at 50 intervals. Red - last 50. DAVIT SYSTEM: Make sure dinghy bridle is securely fastened to dinghy. This is a 3-point hookup. Operate davit windlass with plug-in remote control. BE SURE to check and see that the davit wire rope (cable) rides in the center of the davit arm sheave located at the end of the davit arm. IMPORTANT: It is best to use two people to lower or raise dinghy one person on flybridge deck and one ready to guide the dinghy past the house and hull by standing by on the lower aft deck, portside, taking great care to never get one s body between the two boats or under the dinghy which is being lowered or raised. Be sure to have a line attached to the dinghy s bow prior to lifting or lowering it. This will be needed to keep the dinghy aimed in the correct direction during lifting or lowering and to secure it to the yacht prior to releasing the lifting bridle. DINGHY USE: Open fuel tank vent, prime the fuel line by squeezing the bulb in the fuel line and choke engine once while starting. The choke is electrically controlled and is activated by pushing the key in while cranking the engine. Make sure engine controls are in neutral when starting. IMPORTANT: If you run out of fuel in dinghy s fuel tank, BE SURE TO MIX GASOLINE WITH 2 CYCLE OIL AT 50/1 RATIO. Use TCWII grade 2-cycle oil. Failure to mix oil with gasoline will cause outboard motor to burn up. Life jackets for the operator and passengers should be considered standard equipment. It is especially important to have them on children to prevent injury or worse. In fact, THE LAW REQUIRES IT. 16

17 USE OF AUTOPILOT: WARNING: IF AUTOPILOT IS ENGAGED, HELMSMAN SHOULD NEVER LEAVE HELM STAION. WHEN BOAT IS UNDERWAY, VIGILANCE MUST BE MAINTAINED REGARDING THE CONDITION OF THE SEA AHEAD. Collision with floating debris can be very damaging to the boat s props, shafts and rudders as well as to the hull. The Robertson autopilot controls are quite self-explanatory. Pressing the appropriate button on the Robertson controls on the panel, immediately forward of the pilothouse helm wheel activates the various functions. In addition to the helm controls, there is a hand-held remote control on the Command Bridge. USE OF GPS / LORAN: The GPS/Loran is considered a navigational aid. Feel free to use it, but do not rely solely on it. The compass, charts, dividers, etc. are considered safe and accurate primary navigational tools. You must be continuously aware of your appropriate position, course and speed using the navigational tools, especially the charts. Electrical problems can render electronic aids unreliable or inoperable. It is your duty, as captain, to know exactly where you are at all times, when underway. Never set any portable electronic items such as radios near the magnetic compass. This will really throw the compass well off the mark and can send you in the wrong direction. NAVIONICS PACKAGE: This is the part of this fine yacht that will most amaze the skipper. Long after this vacation has ended, you will still be talking about the Toshiba computer driven by a Nobeltec Visual Navigation Suite RadarPc 7.0 package. It includes GPS, Electronic Radar, and the most recent, high-tech, electronic chart-reading software with 3-D bathyrthmic charts. Of course, the Toshiba system is linked to the Robertson autopilot and to the it s own stand alone Sitex Radar system. This is in addition to a Furuno 36 mile radar system. In all, this system makes trip planning, and point-and-click navigation a dream. The system is complimented with the components of Microsoft Office 2000 and a color inject printer for your convenience. The printer is located in the mid ship forward stateroom closet. One of the more intriguing features of the Nobeltec system is that it contains Electronic, Digital Radar that lays its display right over the top of the chart on the monitor. You can see, in real time, what looms ahead and precisely where it is on the chart in use. The radar display can be added and removed from the display, instantly, with the click of the 17

18 wireless mouse as well as through the wireless keyboard. Another important feature is that the display at the pilothouse helm is duplicated at the control station on the Command Bridge. It, too, is run via the wireless keyboard and mouse. Both monitors are state-of-the-art daylight flat screens mounted so as to be very easy to see and read in all lighting and weather conditions. BOARDING STAIRS AND LADDER: PACIFIC GEM comes equipped with two boarding assist devices. The first, and simplest to use, is a ladder. The ladder, when underway and not in use, normally nests in nesting brackets on the starboard side of the vessel, near the boarding gate, and is secured by securing pins into pin holders in the rail stanchions. When in use, it clips easily into a pair of brackets on the toe rail in the boarding gate, via two attached locking pins. The boarding stairs and its accompanying swivel platform, when underway and not in use, normally nest in nesting brackets on the port side of the vessel, near the boarding gate. This is most easily accomplished by two people, but can also be done by one person. First: Remove the stair handrail by loosening the large securing knobs located at the base of each vertical rail stanchion and then merely lift the handrail, fold the stanchions to parallel the rail, itself, and stow it on the forward deck between the toe rail and the deck boxes. Second: Remove the swivel-securing bolt from the top of the stair and the top of the platform, by twisting the tee-handle, which is the top end of the bolt. Then, swivel the stair toward the vessel and parallel to the dock. Being careful not to pinch fingers in the folding stairs, lift the bottom end of the stair while also lifting the outside of the stairs to both fold it and position it to fit into the obvious brackets, which are mounted to the rail stanchions ahead of the rail gate. You will have to lift it higher than the top of the nesting brackets to allow it to nest back in place. Once the stair is swiveled nested, the tee-bolt should be replaced back into its hole. Third: Fold the stabilizing bracket, which is located on the bottom side of the platform, upward until it snaps into the clips mounted on the underside of the platform. Fourth: Insert the securing pins in the top edge of the nested stairs to secure it to the rail stanchions via brackets mounted there for that purpose. CAUTION: The rail gate chain serves double duty when the stair is in use by being a safety chain to help prevent someone from stepping or falling 18

19 from the platform. Please be sure that it is always installed to the handrail when stairs are deployed and back in place in the rail gate when the boat is underway. GENERAL VESSEL OPERATION: Always operate the vessel from the helm station that provides sufficient visibility, given your course, speed and sea conditions. During docking maneuvers that may require backing, always have a lookout on the aft deck or at the aft edge of the flybridge to serve as an extra set of eyes for the helmsman from the pilothouse. It is best to center the wheel and use only the engine controls to maneuver the boat backwards, while docking, or at very slow speeds. It is extremely important that the trim tabs be in the full up position (bow-up) whenever the boat is maneuvered for docking. **VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Make certain that throttles are all the way down and engines are at dead idle whenever you shift in or out of gear. Failure to do so will likely result in transmission damage. When planning a day s passage, it is good to have an alternative plan in the event of inclement weather, crew preference, etc. Specific operating information on the fine points of what makes the Navigation and Communication equipment work is to be found in a file box located in one of the cabinets in the pilothouse. One location is in the compartment at the starboard side of the wheel, where the secondary 12-volt panel is situated. The other location is in the cabinetry below the helm seating in the pilothouse. It is a good idea to refuel before the fuel levels in the tanks reach ¼ full. One reason is so you are not searching for fuel with dangerously low tanks. Another reason is to prevent any sediment that may be floating in the fuel tanks from entering fuel lines and prematurely clogging the fuel filters. PACIFIC GEM is one of the largest powerboats in the world available for bareboat chartering. This yacht s owner, the insurance carrier and Anacortes Yacht Charters are entrusting a lot of machinery to anyone who is approved to bareboat charter her. We only ask that you respect this relationship by taking good care of the yacht and her equipment. If you will do that, she will take good care of you. You are sure to find her to be one of the friendliest yachts afloat. Enjoy your time aboard! 19
