It is with great sadness that I have to report the untimely passing of Past Commodore Basil Hobbs. Basil was admitted to hospital in early August passing away some 2 weeks later. Basil will be remembered for many reasons but for the most part it was his passion to produce the Nanaimo Yacht Club "Snake Island Nanaimo Regatta" under the sponsors name of Cutty Sark SIN regatta. Basil spent many years as the Club's Legal officer and 7 years ago decided to follow the flags and become Commodore. Basil has always pushed for the better plans and ideas leading us forward. A legacy that will not soon be forgotten and it has been a privilege to serve with him. A celebration of life is planned for Sept See below. (Continued on page #4) MEMORIUMS PC Basil Hobbs passed away August 21, 2013, member since January 26, 1989 Mary Robinson passed away July 2, 2013, member since February 13, 1953 Basil Hobbs Celebration of life September 04 Beban Park Social Ctr. 1:00 PM Nanaimo Yacht Club 2:30 PM your submissions to the Logline: logline@nanaimoyc.ca

Vice Commodore s Report Dick MacLennan Fellow members, it has been such a great summer, the weather god s were smiling upon us. The Queen Bee has logged 62 hours on the meter this year and looking for another adventure. The Executive met or August and we re back to business. Some high lights of the summer which Sue and I hosted, the Symphony Splash was a fantastic time, weather was good and everyone had a good time. Committee Reports will be coming in from the Chairs and reporting at the September Meeting. Security has been very quiet for the summer {Queen Bee was broken into at the end of J Dock but only liquor was taken and little damage done. A blow to Margaritaville Event} Margartaville was a great weekend with Dorothy and Bob as great hosts. The Notice of Motion for the Associate Membership will be posted in the logline so please give it some thought I believe this will be a benefit to the club. Well were off to the Corn Roast for another fantastic weekend. Hope to see as many of you as possible. Cheers Vice Commodore Dick MacLennan. V.C. Dick MacLennan Rear Commodore s Report Terri-Lynne Campbell Another summer cruising season is winding down and we turn our focus back to the day-to-day business of our club. Visitor moorage is up, probably a reflection of the excellent summer weather. Many thanks to the members that let Rusty and our summer staff know when their slips could be used. This really assists them to accommodate the maximum number of visitors which shows favorably on our club revenue. Staff Captain s Report Rob Wiebe I m sure you ll all agree that this past summer has offered some of the best cruising weather in a number of years. Shelley and I got some serious boat time in this summer and got to most of the Club Cruises. Too much fun!! So much has gone on in the past few months, I ll try to include as much as possible. The end of June we had a Burger/Beverage night in support of our Silly Boat Team, which raised almost $300. The team s total fundraising was in excess of $3500; although the value of our participation was priceless. Congratulations to Brenda Thompson, Ross Sommerville and all those involved with this Club effort. Also for the donation of some delicious There are still a few members who have not reported their 2 mandatory annual departures from our docks. We still have 2 months until our fiscal year end for you to either make me aware of your departures or fill out a vessel movement form located just inside the gate. Our moorage committee will be meeting on September 10th. If you have concerns or suggestions you would like put on the agenda please drop me a line or leave a note in my mailbox. Also budget considerations are coming to the forefront so now is the time to contact me if there is anything that needs to be proposed for next years expenditures. Hope to hear from you. hamburger buns to our cause, kudos to Shelley at Cob s Bread in Terminal Park. SIN Regatta was a real screaming success with lots of boats and sunshine; I still have visions of hundreds of hamburgers and steaks passing before my eyes. July 20th, the Club hosted a well attended Open House with information and displays on Club history, membership, sail training and a burger BBQ. Another big thanks goes to Event Leaders Rob and Wendy Stewart and their team, who hosted the Bathtub Fireworks Burger Night on July 25th. The crew served a crowd of over 100 members and guests. The faithful NYC Elves who always help out when there s a job needing doing, this time include Brian and Mary-Jo Gilmore, Dick Maclennan, Tom North and Sue Averill and Judy Wilson. My apologies for any volunteers missed. To quote Rob Stewart, My thanks to a great group that steps in and works together so no one is over burdened. continued

If you have led or volunteered on a committee in the past year, you ll be getting a call/ to attend a Volunteer Appreciation and Recognition event on Sept. 20th. Those tickets will be going on sale the 7th of October. Lots of activity on and off the water. See you around the Club. Rob Wiebe Fleet Captain s Report Pat Grounds CRUISING: Wow what a fantastic hot and busy summer. Since June 1st, NYC has hosted 12 Cruising Events. All were well attended a huge thank you to our Cruising Director Dorothy Bollinger, all the VOLUNTEERS and all the NYC members who participated in these events to make them so successful. Dorothy is taking a well-deserved break from the position of Cruise Director SO if you the members would like to see these events continue we need members to come forward. For those that would be interested in carrying this on please contact myself or Dorothy Bollinger. DINGHY SAILING PROGRAM: Thank you to Jill Christie NYC Coach and Sailing Coordinator, Ian Baker, Paul Clegg, Neil Hawkes our 2 fabulous 2013 Sailing Instructors, Natalie Seward and Aiden Collins for a job well done on the sailing program this summer. Jill has worked hard this summer to create and promote a Sailing Program that the Nanaimo Yacht Club can be very proud of. We want to establish a Steering Committee for the Dinghy Sailing Program if you are interested in serving on this committee to see this program grow and move forward there will be a sign up sheet on the downstairs bulletin board or you can contact Pat Grounds (ptgrounds@shaw.ca) or Jill Christie. See Jill s Sailing Report further on in this Logline. OUTSTATIONS: Our two outstations Salt Spring Marina & Fisherman s Resort, Garden Bay have both been well visited this year by NYC members. Please note September 15th will be our last day for outstation privileges for this year. SIN REGATTA: Was a resounding success with 47 boats participating. There are so many members to thank for this event. Commodore Dave Maudie, P/C Basil Hobbs and all the SIN Committee, Bill Jones and all the Racing Committee, Lorraine Willgress Publicity, all the Sponsors, Dorothy Bollinger and all her Cruising Committee, Rob Wiebe and his Event Planning Committee, Jill Christie and her Sailing Program participants, Bar Committee volunteers, Val Blatt our summer bar server, Security volunteers, our Burgee Committee, P/C Bob Bollinger for organizing the band, and a huge APPRECIATION to Ian and Elly Baker our recycling professionals, and last but definitely not least Rusty and Carol TO ALL A JOB WELL DONE!!!!!! This is a huge event and takes a year of planning. My apologies to anyone that I did not mention in my thanks. Hope everyone had a memorable 2013 Summer!!!!! Nanaimo Power and Sail Squadron celebrating their 75 th Anniversary. September 26, 2013 Pioneer Waterfront Plaza 5:30 pm. A special 75th Anniversary flag is working its way across the country, and will be carried proudly along the channel by the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue to the waterfront below the plaza, where it will be dipped in the ocean. A Sea Cadet honour guard will then escort the flag to the plaza, where it will be welcomed by the Mayor and other dignitaries. There will be entertainment and refreshments, and a booth with information about CPS. We hope that many NYC members can join in for this very special day.

Commodore s Report (Continued) Dave Maudie This year's weather ranks right up there with some of the best and has been nothing less than spectacular for all our activities from Ladysmith to SIN to Margaretaville and hopefully through the Corn Roast this coming week end. To all the organizers thanks a million never had so much fun and look forward to the remainder of 2013 activities. SIN Regatta was one of our best ever with 44 boats registered. There were many individual sponsors from Cutty Sark Scots Whiskey to the local Royal Bank and numerous local marine shops. This year first time ever we had national TV coverage putting Nanaimo on the map. Basil Hobbs worked very hard to put this together and we will be continuing the regatta in the spirit he would have liked. Also this year Nanaimo Yacht Club was represented in the annual Silly Boat races. Thanks to PC Brenda Thompson, Ross Summerville and many more for their fine efforts in raising $3700 for the Child Development Center we came first in Community. We came first in our heat and fourth overall in the final. Not bad for a first year. I was proud to offer an Honorary Membership to the Nanaimo Museum at our July Open House. They have asked us to work with the Museum on another Marine project in support of the Museum. We will be discussing this project and have further details in October. Secretary for NYC - this is basically two nights per month for recording the Executive and General meeting activities. This is a good way to get to know the club operation and officers. Interested parties should contact P.C. Wayne C-Dock will be starting up soon and should be completed prior to winter. Please bare with us for any inconvenience during this time. Thanks to the dock crew for all the hard work. Cruising Report Dorothy What a beautiful summer, complete with lots of sunshine for us all to enjoy on our boats, or at home. A big thank you to Shelley & Rowland Godin and Nadine and Dave Ross for hosting the Pirate Theme Cruise to Ladysmith Maritime Marina. Good weather and lots of fun. The Sin dock party was again a success with the cruising team serving up hamburgers and hot dogs on K dock, dancing and listening to our Nanaimo's band "Wunderbread " I'm sure when Sin came to an end on Sunday Evening, we were ready to go home and put our feet up, knowing that everyone involved in this event, had had a good time. Something to be very proud of. Cruising down to the Inner harbour of Victoria to attend the Symphony Splash was a lot of fun. Great music and wonderful fireworks. Organized by Vice Commodore Dick MacLennan along with first mate Butler Sue. 23 boats attended the Margaritaville - Saltspring Island Marina weekend. Dick and Sue served up Jimmy Buffet's famous Margarita's, along with hot chicken wings. Bob looked after the tailgate barbeque cooking up appetizers. Ganges merchants again donated lots of prizes. The inter club corn roast at Telegraph Harbour Marina is sold out with boats on the waiting list for moorage. Linda Manarin and Farrell Janzen are doing a wonderful job at organizing this huge event with many of the other yacht clubs attending. This year, we have had lots of new members join in the cruises, which is wonderful to see. I would like to thank everyone who came out to the cruising events and especially to all the volunteer helpers that make them so much fun for everyone. What a team, thank you. Now, before the fall weather comes, let's enjoy ourselves over on the docks and Newcastle Island. This event is being hosted by Fleet Captain Pat Grounds on Sunday September 15th. For all of you, that have volunteered, please come out to the Volunteer Recognition Night on September 20th. at the Club House and enjoy the evening. See you out and about, and down at our wonderful Yacht Club.

In June Logline a NOTICE of MOTION was posted recommending saving part of the extra money paid by shed holders in accounts designated for the shed replacement. Members should review this motion before the meeting and be prepared to cast their vote. NOTICE OF MOTION The Executive Committee of the Nanaimo Yacht Club, at a meeting held on May 30, 2013, has approved the following Motion to be presented to the Members of the Nanaimo Yacht Club, for ratification upon approval by a majority of the Members, at the General Meeting to be held on September 12, 2013 at 7:30 PM There shall be a new Rule 4 (e) as follows; Nanaimo Yacht Club shall open and maintain a trust account into which a sum of monies equivalent to 50 % of the premium paid by the all covered moorage occupants (the Shed Premium ), which Shed Premium is defined as the sum paid by the covered moorage occupants which is over and above the sum paid by the uncovered moorage occupants, for an equivalent cost per foot /per month moorage allocation. This trust account fund shall be called the Shed Maintenance and Rebuilding Trust Fund ( SMRTF ). The SMRTF shall at all times be the property of the Nanaimo Yacht Club, however those monies shall only be used for the purpose of shed maintenance, upkeep, and replacement, or the servicing of debt exclusively related to the replacement of sheds. The covered moorage occupants have no personal beneficial interest in the SMRTF. Control of the SMRTF shall at all times vest in the Executive Committee of the Nanaimo Yacht Club subject to budgetary guidelines. DUES REMINDERS The billings for Annual Dues and Moorage are issued on October 1 and April 1 of each year. Each year we encounter problems with members who are out of province/country at that time, and are late with their payments. On extended trips, this can require follow-up letters, and could result in penalties or even loss of membership. This can be avoided by contacting Carol before you leave; she can advise the amount of your billing so it can be paid prior to your leaving. Enjoy your trip!! 2013 Boat Safety Inspections Michael Harrison Saturday/Sunday October 25/26 Saturday/Sunday November 5/6 9:00am to 2:00pm All vessels moored at NYC must be inspected during the weekends above. Inspectors will be available in the clubhouse committee room during these times. Vessels must meet the criteria itemized on the safety report to receive the current year safety sticker. Deficiencies found during the inspection must be corrected within two weeks or a $25 fine will be levied. To pass the boat safety inspection and to receive a current safety sticker, all boats moored at the Yacht Club must have a valid copy of the boat insurance policy on file in the Yacht Club defining the policy expiry date, and at least $ liability coverage. It is the owners responsibility to attend these inspections, and if missed without proper notification a $50 fine will be levied. If boat owners cannot be present for inspection during these weekends, please make alternate arrangements for inspection before the inspection weekends. All vessels must display a valid safety inspection sticker. Volunteer boat inspectors are greatly appreciated. We guarantee lunch, refreshments, and good company. Sign up sheets for availability will be posted on the bulletin board at the club and you can contact Michael Harrison at or cell

The Executive has proposed as part of our membership plan to include Associate Members. This would encourage family members and friends to get involved in the club and to if it is something they would like and to continue on as Regular Members. This would also increase membership and boost revenue. After surveying five other clubs on the B.C. coast this has been the best way of increasing membership and inviting younger people to join our clubs and boating. NOTICE OF MOTION I shall move or cause to be moved the following motion at the General Meeting to be held at the Nanaimo Yacht Club at 7:00 PM October 10, 2013: Moved by Dick MacLennan, seconded by Ken Bell that: 1) An ASSOCIATE MEMBER category be created. 2) To implement this motion, the CONSTITUTION will be modified to add the following: PART 2- MEMBERSHIP, Article 4, item (h) ASSOCIATE MEMBER - a person who has attained the full age of 19 years, who has followed the prescribed procedure and has been accepted by the Executive Committee.
