1 NEWSLETTER OF THE NANAIMO YACHT CLUB October 2013 In this issue: Bridge Reports 1-4 Blue Water Talk 4 Calendar 5 NOTICE of MOTION 4 Junior s Report 7 Commodore's Ball 8 Wine & Cheese 8 Commodores Ball Commodore s Report Dave Maudie On behalf of NYC Members and Families. 75th Anniversary Celebration Congrats to Canadian Power and Sail Squadron (CPSS) and to all volunteers for their commitment to this organization. They have graduated over 800,000 people in the last 75 years, however listening to the problems boaters have on the water there is still a lot of boaters who could benefit from the courses. CPSS provide courses on general boating, navigation, radio operation, boating for women by women, and Operators Certification all directed at safe boating operation for all boaters. The work is much appreciated. September 20 was Volunteer Appreciation night. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out and allowed the executive to show their appreciation for all the hard work done. Congrats to the 15 people who won gift certificates. A special thanks to Rob and Shelly Wiebe, Dick McLennan, Sue Butler, Terry Lynne Campbell and Lorne Irvine for their help. Good time had by all. November 10th KEEP CALM and PAY YOUR DUES Over the next several months the planning group is starting to work on a comprehensive Long Range Plan ( LRP) to cover all aspects of the club operation. During that time their will be many questions on which direction the club should take from Club house, Membership, Docks, Sailing programs, Financing and Future programs. Members are asked to insure they respond to the surveys the Planning Group is developing to insure NYC can and will be developed in the best interests of the future of NYC. The main benefit of having a LRP is to insure there are not too many surprises and that we maintain the low cost of boating we have had throughout the past. October 19, 2013 is our annual Fall wine and Cheese where you can meet the new and old executive members who will be pouring your wine. (Continued on page #3) your submissions to the Logline: logline@nanaimoyc.ca
2 Vice Commodore s Report Dick MacLennan Hi Members and Family's: The year is drawing to a close, Fall is upon us it's time to put away our summer gear and prepare for winter and the events to follow. I am extremely happy with this past year, the events, the annual Corn Roast to which I thank Linda Manarin and Farrell Janzen and the team who assisted then to numerous to name Thank you to you all. I am looking forward to the upcoming year to serve on the Bridge as your Commodore with the Flag Officers, Directors, anew Secretary and the Finance Team, Ken Bell is leaving us after many years looking after the finances for the Yacht Club. Ken I personally will miss you for the help you have give over the years and the wealth of knowledge. As Chair of the Security Committee it has been very quiet on the water front no incidents have been reported. Rusty has been away, so our next meeting will be in October continuing on with the Program. Boat Safety Inspections are coming up the dates will be posted on the notice board and notice in the Logline. I find the Electronic version of the Logline much simpler than the mail out. I'm told there is some 200 members still using the mail so if you have a P.C. please let the office know. This Alone is saving club members a huge amount of money. Well enough said. I'm looking forward to seeing you all at the upcoming events and any questions you may have pass them on and I will try and answer them for you or take it to the Executive and will get one for you. Please read your Logline there is a vast amount information in it presented by your Flag Officers and Executive. Staff Captain s Report Rob Wiebe On September 20th we had a well attended reception for our volunteers. This is the Executive s opportunity to acknowledge and thank the people who make our club work as well as it does. A big thanks to all our volunteers for their efforts. We have a number of Social Events in the planning stages. I want to invite all members to the Fall Wine and Cheese on October 19th at 7:30 PM. Incoming and outgoing Executive will be serving, and I promise some nice wines, delicious snacks and engaging conversation. This is always a popular event, I expect a good turnout. Tickets for the Commodore s Ball on November 16th will be available October 7th. Unless sold out before, cut off for sales will be November 9th. Refer to the ad in this Logline for details. I ve been working with a number of the executive and committee members on surveying membership opinion. We are developing a survey on some membership and planning issues and we have a target date for this survey of early November, to take advantage of the Logline mail out. Members who do not have (or choose to receive the Logline in paper) will receive a paper copy of the survey. Those who access the Logline electronically will find the survey embedded in our website. Please fill out one or the other. Lastly, I need to put out a call for help. Our Cruising Committee Chair, Dorothy Bollinger has stepped down, after a long and successful tenure in that position. We need someone to step up and take over this position. This committee will be under my Flag next year, and I know from the past year that running a committee while trying to perform the duties of a Club officer is not a good situation. If you think taking on a committee is difficult, think about the precedence of a Club Officer having to do both jobs and you can see how it will become more and more difficult to recruit new Officers. If you re an active cruiser, and have enjoyed the Club s cruises during summer, then I want to hear from you. Please volunteer. When I call, I won t take no for an answer. Your humble Staff Captain Rob Wiebe
3 Fleet Captain s Report Pat Grounds Our Junior sailing program has been a great success. Look ahead for Jill Christies full report. With the up coming storm this weekend, Jill, Ron and Ian started moving dinghy docks to avoid any damage. Great job! Our two Outstations this year were very successful. We had 81 boats visit Fisherman s Resort, in Garden Bay, and 77 boats visit Salt Spring Island Marina. These marina s continue to be popular destinations for our members. Thank you to all who braved the foggy, light rainy day for our wind up dock gathering on Newcastle Island on September 7th. This was our final Cruising event for Still wishing for members to step up for the Cruise Coordinator position this can be more than one person think about it and let either Dorothy Bollinger or myself know if you might be interested. Currently this is a very busy time working on budgets with all committee members. My final note THANK YOU Ken Bell for all your many years/and hours of volunteered time working as our treasurer. You have done a phenomenal job and I wish you nothing but the best in your upcoming leisure time. Commodore s Report (Continued) Dave Maudie There is no cost to attending the Wine & Cheese event and talking with the Executive exchanging ideas is always good. The Nominating Committee have completed their selection of officers, directors, secretary and Finance vacancies, many of the faces will be the same but the following are new members stepping up for the Executive. Staff Captain-Doug Bell, Finance Committee - Barb Wardill, Dwight Brett, David Braithwaite, Secretary Christie Kilmer and Directors - John Heisterman and Rick McDonough Thank you I know you will all enjoy the experience. It gives a new perspective and appreciation of the Club operation and it's going to be an interesting year - have fun and enjoy the year. Thanks to Wayne, Basil, Tom, Gary, Ieuan, our nominating committee for a job well done.
4 Notice of Motion Membership Part 2, 4-c At the November 2013 General Meeting the following motion will be made as recommended by your NYC Executive "That Ken Bell be given an Honorary Life Membership". Ken has been a member since 1998 and has served 12 plus years as Chief financial officer of Nanaimo Yacht Club. He was instrumental in developing and implementing our present financial system of budgeting and accounting as well as being a part of the new operating systems now being implemented. Keeping the executive aware of changes and insuring our bills are correct and paid. He has, as well provided full detailed annual financial reports tracking our budget spending and insuring the Club followed the GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Ken has also been an active member almost since the day he became a member in 1998 and is a member in good standing. Location: Nanaimo Yacht Club In August of 2010 Jay and Anita Bigland sailed their Spencer 35 south to follow the summer sun. HARBOUR HOP TO MEXICO JAY AND ANITA BIGLAND October 17, 2013 They harbour hopped their way to San Diego where they hooked up with the BaHaha and sailed the 10 day rally to Cabo San Lucas. From there the journey will follow North through the Sea of Cortez with stops in La Paz, Loreto, Santa Rosalia to the popular summer port of San Carlos. Doors & No-Host Bar open at 1900; Meeting at 1930 BCA Members: $5.00 General Public: $10.00 <Nanaimo@bluewatercruising.org> for more information Mediterranean Boat Prices Crash. Watching the world yacht prices it is surprising how Italian and Greek yachting prices remained at pre recession pricing for so long. Recently this spring however prices crashed as hundreds of charter fleet boats hit the market. A quick query on YachtWorld (Sloop, 45'-50', years old) finds 5 boats in the Pacific Northwest region under $200,000. Same search in the Mediterranean lists over 350 boats! With average prices around $115,000. One blog poster bragged he picked up a 2001 Bavaria 50 for $85,000 USD. The CAD-Euro exchange remains in the $ range, down from the pre-recession 1.60 levels. That puts these yachts 'On Sale' for the near future. Owning a boat overseas has its problems and issues. Coownership reduces risk, capital cost and maintenance costs by 1/2 or 2/3. A five year plan can include the Greek isles, Italian coast, South of France, Spanish and Portuguese coasts with each partner enjoying a few months every year alternating Spring, Summer and Fall seasons. Putting the yacht on the hard when not in use. With three useable seasons each year, a three share flexible, fractional, private ownership is ideal. I invite other club members with past experience or would consider fractional ownership of a 'floating condo' to contact me and participate in a special interest group and discussions at our club bar this winter. This was the first meeting on my own as I have been under the tutelage of Helen Randall this past year. I think the meeting went very well as 11 applicants came on board. There was no orientation meeting over the summer, hence the large group. We have 3 more applicants that were not available to attend this session. We will work with them over the next few weeks. We also have 8 new junior members that have signed up to become members. 7 Junior Report Jill Christie September continues to be a busy month for the dinghy sailors. On September 7th, the Dinghy Summer Sail-abration was a fantastic success. Junior volunteers, Race Team members and summer sailing students shared their knowledge and passion with their parents in between bites of burgers and watermelon. Look who s in the drivers seat now! Thanks to all the Volunteers, Instructors and Coaches who made it happen. Some of the parents loved it so much they decided to register for their own lessons. The Adult Intro to Sailing has been a huge hit! On Mondays they ve been sharing the waters with our Junior Race Team who continue to train twice each week since they started July 4th. We ve had as many as 9 Club 420 s on the water at one time. That s 18 sailors! The recreational sail program wound down on International Talk Like a Pirate Day (Sept. 19th) and our Instructional Programs wrap up on Sept 30th. It isn t time to pull the plug yet though! The Fall Dinghy Race Team Session jumped into full swing on Sept 23rd. You can watch our hardy dinghy sailors training until Nov. 15 this year! If you d like to meet them in person, c mon out to the October General Meeting. NYC Dinghy Race Team joined ranks with the Comox Valley Race Team and competed in the BC Circuit Fall Dinghies Championships Sept. 27 & 28 at Royal Victoria Yacht Club. Congratulations to Ben Daniel, Heath Dean, Chris Vassallo, Tiernan Kingzett and Coaches Jill Christie and Neil Hawkes for an outstanding representation of NYC. October for me means planning for the Junior Program. We hope to have it up and running middle of November. It will include components of Leadership, Outdoor Recreation, Seamanship and Community Service. We ve got some great ideas for workshops, out trips, presentations, and mentorship opportunities. The Dinghy and Junior Committee is growing and making tracks! If you d like to join the team of 16 and get in on the action please contact: <nycsailtraining@gmail.com> CANSail
