2 CEREMONY for the OPENING of the SAILING SEASON GRACE We have come today to worship God our maker and sustainer and to pray for God s blessing on all seafarers. We give thanks for the sea as a highway for commerce, a source of food and a playground for our leisure, and commend to God s care and protection those who go to the sea from this club and from other clubs and harbours represented here. We come to pray also for those who support the seafarers. We come to pray for family and friends who keep the home fires burning and to await their safe return. Finally we pray for the meal we are to receive: bless O Lord this food to our use and us to your service, and keep us now and always mindful of the needs of others. Amen NATIONAL ANTHEM Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free; We ve golden soil and wealth for toil; our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in nature s gifts of beauty rich and rare; In history s page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull s way and the whale s way where the wind s like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover And a quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. 3 SAIL PAST MANOEUVRES Abandonment: The Sail Past may be Postponed by hoisting Code Flag AP on the Clubhouse mast. This will be confirmed by a radio message on VHF Channel 73 at 1215 hours and 1230 hours. Insufficient wind: In the event that there is insufficient wind, yachts may sail past with engine assistance, at no more than 4 knots with mainsail and headsail set. Event Sequence: Timings are approximate only. Killara lays orange buoy to designate line for stern of official vessel. Perpendicular to wind. Killara lays yellow buoy A 400 metres at 45 o upwind from B. Killara anchors approximately 20 metres to windward of A to form the Start Gate Official vessel O anchor so its stern forms a line perpendicular to the wind and aligned with B The fleet assembles to windward of Killara Sail Past: 1235 Warning Signal. Killara makes a sound signal and displays a Green flag BLESSING OF THE FLEET PRAYER (The Right Reverend Paul White on radio and Skippers-Ch73) 1240 Preparatory Signal. Killara makes a sound signal and displays Flag R and number board Sail Past. Killara makes a sound signal. * Led by the Centenary Trophy winner, yachts will sail past by divisions (see table next page) through the start gate formed by Killara and buoy A and then pass to leeward of the official vessel O. * Yachts dispersing after the sail past are requested to keep well clear of the saluting area. Salute: Passing the stern of the Official vessel William Paterson: * Yachts salute by dipping the Australian Ensign (Blue) if displayed, or the Squadron Burgee (in lieu of Ensign), followed by giving three cheers for the Commodore Before the end of Group 1, Killara makes a sound signal and displays number board 2 ; Group 2 commences to sail past. * Other groups follow the preceding group in a similar manner. 4 PRAYER for the BLESSING of the FLEET The Skipper of each yacht may join in this prayer with Father Turi Hollis on radio relay or delegate someone to do so: Blessed be God, Source of all being, love and truth, Creator of heaven and earth, of the waters of life on land and sea. Bless us, O God, bless these craft and all who sail in them, and bless our Squadron in the season ahead. Keep us true to your image in us through our communion with and care for one another, and for our world, and make us instruments of your peace and re-creation. Overtaking should be avoided. * Yachts may wear the Australian National Ensign (Blue) if available and the Squadron Burgee, along with their respective division or class flags. * Yachts salute by dipping the Australian Ensign (Blue) if displayed, or the Squadron Burgee (in lieu of Ensign), followed by giving three cheers for the Commodore. * Skippers should ensure that good taste and decorum are maintained in the best traditions of the Squadron * Sail Past concludes * Official vessels weigh anchor and return guests to St. Kilda pier.
