The Praise is for Allah azwj Lord azwj of the Worlds, and Blessing be upon our Chief Muhammad saww and his saww Purified Progeny asws, and greetings with abundant greetings. Chapter 1 أ خ ب ر ن ا أ ب و ج ع ف ر م ح م د ب ن ي ع ق وب ق ال ح د ث ن ي ع د ة م ن أ ص ح اب ن ا م ن ه م م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ال ع ط ار ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن ال ح س ن ب ن م ح ب وب ع ن ال ع ل ء ب ن ر ز ين ع ن م ح م د ب ن م س ل م ع ن أ ب ي ج ع ف ر ( عليه الس لم ) ق ال ل م ا خ ل ق للا ال ع ق ل اس ت ن ط ق ه ث م ق ال ل ه أ ق ب ل ف أ ق ب ل ث م ق ال ل ه أ د ب ر ف أ د ب ر ث م ق ال و ع ز ت ي و ج ل ل ي م ا خ ل ق ت خ ل قا ه و أ ح ب إ ل ي م ن ك و ل أ ك م ل ت ك إ ل ف يم ن أ ح ب أ م ا إ ن ي إ ي اك آم ر و إ ي اك أ ن ه ى و إ ي اك أ ع اق ب و إ ي اك أ ث يب. Abu Ja far Muhammad Bin Yaqoub informed us saying, It was narrated to us by a number of our companions, from them was Muhammad Bin Yahya Al Attar, from Ahmad bin Muhammad, from Al Hassan Bin Mahboub, from Al A ala Bin Razeyn, from Muhammad Bin Muslim, (It has been narrated) from Abu Ja far asws having said: When Allah azwj Created the (Aql - intellect) 1, He azwj Interrogated it, then Said to it: Come! So it came. Then ال ع ق ل Said to it: Turn back! So it turned back. Then He azwj Said: By My azwj Might and My azwj Majesy! I azwj did not Create any creature which is more Beloved to Me azwj than you, nor will I azwj Perfect you except among the ones whom I azwj Love. But, it is (based on) you that I azwj shall Command, and for you I azwj shall Forbid, and for you I azwj shall Punish, and for you I azwj shall Reward. 2 ع ل ي ب ن م ح م د ع ن س ه ل ب ن ز ي اد ع ن ع م ر و ب ن ع ث م ان ع ن م ف ض ل ب ن ص ال ح ع ن س ع د ب ن ط ر يف ع ن ا ل ص ب غ ب ن ن ب ات ة ع ن ع ل ي ( عليه الس لم ) ق ال ه ب ط ج ب ر ئ يل ع ل ى آد م ( عليه الس لم ) ف ق ال ي ا آد م إ ن ي أ م ر ت أ ن أ خ ي ر ك و اح د ة م ن ث ل ث ف اخ ت ر ه ا و د ع اث ن ت ي ن ف ق ال ل ه آد م ي ا ج ب ر ئ يل و م ا الث ل ث Ali Bin Muhammad, from Sahl Bin Ziyad, from Amro Bin Usman, from Mufazzal Bin Salih, from Sa ad Bin Tareyf, from Al Asbagh Bin Nubata, (It has been narrated) from Ali asws having said: Jibraeel as descended unto Adam as and he as said: O Adam as! I as have been Commanded to get you as to choose one from three, therefore choose it and leave the (other) two. So Adam as said to him as : O Jibraeel as! And what are the three? ف ق ال ال ع ق ل و ال ح ي اء و الد ين ف ق ال آد م إ ن ي ق د اخ ت ر ت ال ع ق ل ف ق ال ج ب ر ئ يل ل ل ح ي اء و أ م ر ن ا أ ن ن ك ون م ع ال ع ق ل ح ي ث ك ان ق ال ف ش أ ن ك م ا و ع ر ج. الد ين ان ص ر ف ا و د ع اه ف ق ا ل ي ا ج ب ر ئ يل إ ن ا So he as said: The و ال ح ي اء و الد ين ال ع ق ل intellect, and the modesty (bashfulness), and the Religion. So Adam as said: I as have chosen the intellect. So Jibraeel as said to the modesty and the Religion: Leave! So they both said, O Jibraeel as! We have been Commanded that we should happen to be with the intellect wherever it may be. Ahmad Bin Idrees, from Muhammad Bin Abdul Jabbar, from one of our companions, (It has been narrated) raising it to Abu Abdullah asws, said, I said to him asws, What is the ال ع ق ل (Aql- intellect? He asws said: Through which the Beneficent is worshipped with, and the Gardens are attained with. I said, So that which was in Muawiya? So he asws said: That is the heinous, that is the devilry, and it may disguise as the intellect, but it is not the intellect. 4 م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ب ن ع يس ى ع ن اب ن ف ض ال ع ن ال ح س ن ب ن ال ج ه م ق ال س م ع ت الر ضا ( عليه الس لم ) ي ق ول ص د يق ك ل ام ر ئ ع ق ل ه و ع د و ه ج ه ل ه. Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from Ibn Fazzal, from Al Hassan Bin Al Jahm who said, I heard Al-Reza asws saying: A friend of every person is his intellect, and ه ج ه ل ه ع د و his enemy is his ignorance. 5 و ع ن ه ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن اب ن ف ض ال ع ن ال ح س ن ب ن ال ج ه م ق ال ق ل ت ل ب ي ال ح س ن ( عليه الس لم ) إ ن ع ن دن ا ق و ما ل ه م م ح ب ة و ل ي س ت ل ه م ت ل ك ال ع ز يم ة ي ق ول ون ب ه ذ ا ال ق و ل ف ق ال ل ي س أ ول ئ ك م م ن ع ات ب للا إ ن م ا ق ال للا ف اع ت ب ر وا يا أ ول ي ا ل ب صار. And from him, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Fazzal, from Al Hassan Bin Al Jahm who said, I said to Abu Al-Hassan asws, In our presence there is a group of people, for them is love, and there isn t that magnificence for them that they should be saying with this word (Al-Wilayah). So he asws said: They are from the ones whom Allah azwj Admonished. But rather, Allah azwj Said [59:2] therefore take a lesson, O you who have vision. 6 أ ح م د ب ن إ د ر يس ع ن م ح م د ب ن ح س ان ع ن أ ب ي م ح م د الر از ي ع ن س ي ف ب ن ع م ير ة للا ( عليه الس لم ) م ن ك ان ع اق ل ك ان ل ه د ين و م ن ك ان ل ه د ين د خ ل ال ج ن ة. ع ن إ س ح اق ب ن ع م ار ق ال ق ال أ ب و ع ب د Ahmad Bin Idrees, from Muhammad Bin Hassan, from Abu Muhammad Al Razy, from Sayf Bin Ameyra, from Is haq Bin Ammar who said, Abu Abdullah asws said: The one who was an intellectual, there would be Religion for him, and the one who has Religion for him, would enter the Paradise. 7 ع د ة م ن أ ص ح اب ن ا ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ب ن خ ال د ع ن ال ح س ن ب ن ع ل ي ب ن ي ق ط ين ع ن م ح م د ب ن س ن ان ع ن أ ب ي ال ج ار ود ع ن أ ب ي ج ع ف ر ( عليه الس لم ) ق ال إ ن م ا ي د اق للا ال ع ب اد ف ي ال ح س اب ي و م ال ق ي ام ة ع ل ى ق د ر م ا آت اه م م ن ال ع ق ول ف ي الد ن ي ا. 5 (It has been narrated) from Abu Ja far asws having said: But rather Allah azwj would Hold the servants (responsible) regarding the Reckoning on the Day of Judgment upon a measurement of what He azwj had Given them from the intellects in the world. 8 ع ل ي ب ن م ح م د ب ن ع ب د للا ع ن إ ب ر اه يم ب ن إ س ح اق ا ل ح م ر ع ن م ح م د ب ن س ل ي م ان الد ي ل م ي ع ن أ ب يه ق ال ق ل ت ل ب ي ع ب د للا ( عليه الس لم ) ف ل ن م ن ع ب اد ت ه و د ين ه و ف ض ل ه ف ق ال ك ي ف ع ق ل ه ق ل ت ل أ د ر ي ف ق ال إ ن الث و اب ع ل ى ق د ر ال ع ق ل إ ن ر ج ل م ن ف ي ج ز ير ة م ن ج ز ائ ر ال ب ح ر خ ض ر اء ن ض ر ة ك ث ير ة الش ج ر ظ اه ر ة ال م اء و إ ن م ل كا م ن ال م ل ئ ك ة ب ن ي إ س ر ائ يل ك ان ي ع ب د للا م ر ب ه ف ق ال ي ا ر ب أ ر ن ي ث و اب ع ب د ك ه ذ ا Ali Bin Muhammad Bin Abdullah, from Ibrahim Bin Is haq Al Ahmar, from Muhammad Bin Suleyman Al Daylami, from his father who said, I said to Abu Abdullah asws, of so and so, and (about) his worship, and his Religion and his merits. So he asws said: How is his intellect? I said, I do not know. So he asws said: The Rewards are (based) upon the measurement of the intellect. A man from the Children of Israel was worshipping Allah azwj in an island from the islands of the sea, (which was) green, scenic, there being a lot of trees, at the back of the water (lakes & rivers), and that an Angel from the Angels passed by him, so he said: O Lord azwj! Show me the Rewards of this servant of Yours azwj. ف أ ر اه للا ت ع ال ى ذ ل ك ف اس ت ق ل ه ال م ل ك ف أ و ح ى للا ت ع ال ى إ ل ي ه أ ن اص ح ب ه ف أ ت اه ال م ل ك ف ي ص ور ة إ ن س ي ف ق ال ل ه م ن أ ن ت ق ال أ ن ا م ع ك ر ج ل ع اب د ب ل غ ن ي م ك ان ك و ع ب اد ت ك ف ي ه ذ ا ال م ك ان ف أ ت ي ت ك ل ع ب د للا So Allah azwj the Exalted Showed him that, and the Angel considered it to be little. So Allah azwj the Exalted Revealed unto him, that he should accompany him. So the Angel went over to him in the image of a human being. So he (the man) said to him (the Angel), Who are you? He said, I am a worshipping man. (News) of your position and your worship reached me in this place, so I came over to you in order to worship Allah azwj along with you. ف ك ان م ع ه ي و م ه ذ ل ك ف ل م ا أ ص ب ح ق ال ل ه ال م ل ك إ ن م ك ان ك ل ن ز ه و م ا ي ص ل ح إ ل ل ل ع ب اد ة ف ق ال ل ه ال ع اب د إ ن ل م ك ان ن ا ه ذ ا ع ي با ف ق ا ل ل ه و م ا ه و ق ال ل ي س ل ر ب ن ا ب ه يم ة ف ل و ك ان ل ه ح م ار ر ع ي ن اه ف ي ه ذ ا ال م و ض ع ف إ ن ه ذ ا ال ح ش يش ي ض يع ف ق ال ل ه ذ ل ك ال م ل ك و م ا ل ر ب ك ح م ار ف ق ال ل و ك ان ل ه ح م ار م ا ك ان ي ض يع م ث ل ه ذ ا ال ح ش يش It was so that he was with him for that day of his. So when it was morning, the Angel said to him: Your place is scenic and it is not correct for anything except for the worship. So the worshipper said to him, There is a fault with this place of ours. So he said to him: And what is it? He said, There is no animal of our Lord azwj. Had there been a donkey of His azwj, we would have grazed it in this place, for this pasture is being wasted. So that Angel said to him: And there is no donkey for your Lord azwj? So he said, Had there been a donkey for Him azwj, He azwj would not have Wasted the plush pasture like this. ف أ و ح ى للا إ ل ى ال م ل ك إ ن م ا أ ث يب ه ع ل ى ق د ر ع ق ل ه. 6 ع ل ي ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ع ن أ ب يه ع ن الن و ف ل ي ع ن الس ك ون ي ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا ( عليه الس لم ) ق ال وآله ) إ ذ ا ب ل غ ك م ع ن ر ج ل ح س ن ح ال ف ان ظ ر وا ف ي ح س ن ع ق ل ه ف إ ن م ا ي ج از ى ب ع ق ل ه. ق ال ر س ول للا ( صلى للا عليه Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Al Nowfaly, from Al Sakuny, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah asws having said: Rasool-Allah saww said: When (news) of the good state of a man reaches you, so look at the goodness of his intellect, for rather he would be Recompensed by (based upon the level of) his intellect. 10 م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن اب ن م ح ب وب ع ن ع ب د للا ب ن س ن ان ق ال ذ ك ر ت ل ب ي ع ب د للا ( عليه الس لم ) ر ج ل م ب ت ل ى ب ال و ض وء و الص ل ة و ق ل ت ه و ر ج ل ع اق ل ف ق ال أ ب و ع ب د للا و أ ي ع ق ل ل ه و ه و ي ط يع الش ي ط ان ف ق ل ت ل ه و ك ي ف ي ط ي ع الش ي ط ان ف ق ال س ل ه ه ذ ا ال ذ ي ي أ ت يه م ن أ ي ش ي ء ه و ف إ ن ه ي ق ول ل ك م ن ع م ل الش ي ط ان. Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Mahboub, from Abdullah Bin Sinan who said, I mentioned to Abu Abdullah asws a man constantly indulging in the ablution and the Salāt, and I said, He is an intelligent man. So Abu Abdullah asws said: And which intellect is there for him, and he is obeying the Satan la? So I said to him asws, And how is he obeying the Satan la? So he asws said: Ask him about this which he is doing, from which thing is it, so he would be saying to you, From the acts of the Satan la. 11 ع د ة م ن أ ص ح اب ن ا ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ب ن خ ال د ع ن ب ع ض أ ص ح اب ه ر ف ع ه ق ال ق ال ر س ول للا ( صلى للا عليه وآله ) م ا ق س م للا ل ل ع ب اد ش ي ئا أ ف ض ل م ن ال ع ق ل ف ن و م ال ع اق ل أ ف ض ل م ن س ه ر ال ج اه ل و إ ق ام ة ال ع اق ل أ ف ض ل م ن ش خ وص ال ج اه ل و ل ب ع ث للا ن ب ي ا و ل ر س و ل ح ت ى ي س ت ك م ل ال ع ق ل و ي ك ون ع ق ل ه أ ف ض ل م ن ج م يع ع ق ول أ م ت ه A number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Khalid, from oe of his companions, raising it, said, Rasool-Allah saww said: Allah azwj has not Distributed for the servants anything more superior than the intellect. Thus, the sleep of the intellectual is superior to the vigil of the ignorant, and the staying (at home) of the intellectual is superior than going out of the ignorant; and Allah azwj neither Sent a Prophet as nor a Rasool as until He azwj Perfected the intellect (for him as ), and his as intellect happened to be superior to the entirety of the intellects of the community. و م ا ي ض م ر الن ب ي ( صلى للا عليه وآله ) ف ي ن ف س ه أ ف ض ل م ن اج ت ه اد ال م ج ت ه د ين و م ا أ د ى ال ع ب د ف ر ائ ض للا ح ت ى ع ق ل ع ن ه و ل ب ل غ ج م يع ال ع اب د ين ف ي ف ض ل ع ب اد ت ه م م ا ب ل غ ال ع اق ل و ال ع ق ل ء ه م أ ول و ا ل ل ب اب ال ذ ين ق ال للا تع ال ى و م ا ي ت ذ ك ر إ ل أ ول و ا ل ل ب اب. And whatever the Prophet saww concealed within himself saww is superior to the striving of the strivers; and the servant would not fulfil the Obligations of Allah azwj until he knows about Him azwj, and the entirety of the worshippers would not reach in merit with their worshipping what the intellectual would reach; and the intellectuals, they 10 Al Kafi V 1 The Book Of Intellect and Ignorance CH 1 H 9 11 Al Kafi V 1 The Book Of Intellect and Ignorance CH 1 H 10 6 out of 29

7 are those possessing understanding whom Allah azwj Speaks of [13:19] But rather, only those possessing understanding will mind. 12 أ ب و ع ب د للا ا ل ش ع ر ي ع ن ب ع ض أ ص ح اب ن ا ر ف ع ه ع ن ه ش ام ب ن ال ح ك م ق ال ق ال ل ي أ ب و ال ح س ن م وس ى ب ن ج ع ف ر ( عليه الس لم ت ب ار ك و ت ع ال ى ب ش ر أ ه ل ال ع ق ل و ال ف ه م ف ي ك ت اب ه ف ق ال ف ب ش ر ع باد ال ذ ين ي س ت م ع ون ال ق و ل ف ي ت ب ع ون أ ح س ن ه ) ي ا ه ش ام إ ن للا أ ولئ ك ال ذ ين ه داه م للا و أ ولئ ك ه م أ ول وا ا ل ل باب O Abu Abdullah Al Ashary, from one of our companions, raising it, from Hisham Bin Al Hakam who said, Abu Al-Hassan Musa Bin Ja far asws said to me: O Hisham! Allah azwj Blessed and High Gave glad tidings to the people of the intellect and the understanding in His azwj Book, so He azwj Said [39:17] therefore give good news to My servants, [39:18] Those who listen intently to the Word, then follow the best of it; those are they whom Allah has Guided, and those it is who are the ones of understanding. ت ب ار ك و ت ع ال ى أ ك م ل ل لن اس ال ح ج ج ب ال ع ق ول و ن ص ر الن ب ي ين ب ال ب ي ان و د ل ه م ع ل ى ر ب وب ي ت ه ب ا ل د ل ة ف ق ال و إ له ك م ي ا ه ش ام إ ن للا إ له واح د ل إ له إ ل ه و الر ح من الر ح يم. إ ن ف ي خ ل ق الس ماوات و ا ل ر ض و اخ ت لف الل ي ل و الن هار و ال ف ل ك ال ت ي ت ج ر ي ف ي ال ب ح ر ب ما ي ن ف ع الن اس و ما أ ن ز ل للا م ن الس ماء م ن ماء ف أ ح يا ب ه ا ل ر ض ب ع د م و ت ها و ب ث ف يها م ن ك ل د اب ة و ت ص ر ي ف الر ياح و الس حاب ال م س خ ر ب ي ن الس ماء و ا ل ر ض ل يات ل ق و م ي ع ق ل و ن O Hisham! Allah azwj Blessed and High Perfected the argument to the people by the intellects and Helped the Prophets as with the proclamations, and Pointed them as upon His azwj Lordship by the evidence, so He azwj Said [2:163] And your God is one God! There is no god but He; He is the Beneficent, the Merciful [2:164] Surely in the Creation of the skies and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day, and the ships that run in the sea with that which profits the people, and the water that Allah Sends down from the sky, then gives life with it to the earth after its death and Spreads in it all (kinds of) animals, and the changing of the winds and the clouds made subservient between the sky and the earth, there are signs for a people who are using their intellects. ي ا ه ش ام ق د ج ع ل للا ذ ل ك د ل ي ل ع ل ى م ع ر ف ت ه ب أ ن ل ه م م د ب را ف ق ال و س خ ر ل ك م الل ي ل و الن هار و الش م س و ال ق م ر و الن ج و م م س خ رات ب أ م ر ه إ ن ف ي ذل ك ل يات ل ق و م ي ع ق ل و ن O Hisham! Allah azwj has Made that to be a pointer to His azwj recognition that it has been Regulated for them, so He azwj Said [16:12] And He Made subservient to you the night and the day and the sun and the moon, and the stars are made subservient by His Command; surely there are signs in this for a people who using their intellects. و ق ال ه و ال ذ ي خ ل ق ك م م ن ت راب ث م م ن ن ط ف ة ث م م ن ع ل ق ة ث م ي خ ر ج ك م ط ف ل ث م ل ت ب ل غ وا أ ش د ك م ث م ل ت ك ون وا ش ي وخا و م ن ك م م ن ي ت و ف ى م ن ق ب ل و ل ت ب ل غ وا أ ج ل م س م ى و ل ع ل ك م ت ع ق ل ون And Said [40:67] He it is Who Created you from dust, then from a sperm, then from a clot, then Brought you forth as a child, then that you may become old, then that you may be old; and among you there are some who are caused to 12 Al Kafi V 1 The Book Of Intellect and Ignorance CH 1 H 11 7 out of 29

8 die before, and that you may reach an appointed term, and that perhaps you may be using your intellects. و ق ال إ ن ف ي اخ ت ل ف الل ي ل و الن ه ار و م ا أ ن ز ل للا م ن الس م اء م ن ر ز ق ف أ ح ي ا ب ه ا ل ر ض ب ع د م و ت ه ا و ت ص ر يف ال ري اح و الس ح اب ال م س خ ر ب ي ن الس م اء و ا ل ر ض ل ي ات ل ق و م ي ع ق ل ون And Said [45:5] And (in) the variation of the night and the day, and (in) what Allah Sends down of sustenance from the cloud, then gives life thereby to the earth after its death, and (in) the changing of the winds [2:164] and the clouds made subservient between the sky and the earth, there are signs for a people who are using their intellects. و ق ال ي ح ي ا ل ر ض ب ع د م و ت ها ق د ب ي ن ا ل ك م ا ل يات ل ع ل ك م ت ع ق ل ون And Said [57:17] Know that Allah Revives the earth after its death; We have made the Verses clear to you so that you may use your intellects. و ق ال و ج ن ات م ن أ ع ناب و ز ر ع و ن خ يل ص ن وان و غ ي ر ص ن وان ي س قى ب ماء واح د و ن ف ض ل ب ع ض ها ع لى ب ع ض ف ي ا ل ك ل إ ن ف ي ذل ك ل يات ل ق و م ي ع ق ل ون And Said [13:4] And in the earth there are tracts side by side and gardens of grapes and corn and palm trees having one root and having distinct roots - they are watered with one water, and We Prefer some over the other for eating; surely there are Signs in this for a people who use their intellects. و ق ال و م ن آيات ه ي ر يك م ال ب ر ق خ و فا و ط م عا و ي ن ز ل م ن الس ماء ماء ف ي ح ي ي ب ه ا ل ر ض ب ع د م و ت ها إ ن ف ي ذل ك ل يات ل ق و م ي ع ق ل ون And Said [30:24] And from His Signs is that He Shows you the lightning for fear and for hope, and Sends down water from the clouds then Gives life therewith to the earth after its death; most surely there are Signs in this for a people who are using their intellects. و ق ال ق ل ت عال و ا أ ت ل ما ح ر م ر ب ك م ع ل ي ك م أ ل ت ش ر ك وا ب ه ش ي ئا و ب ال وال د ي ن إ ح سانا و ل ت ق ت ل وا أ و لد ك م م ن إ م لق ن ح ن ن ر ز ق ك م و إ ي اه م و ل ت ق ر ب وا ال ف واح ش ما ظ ه ر م ن ها و ما ب ط ن و ل ت ق ت ل وا الن ف س ال ت ي ح ر م للا إ ل ب ال ح ق ذل ك م و ص اك م ب ه ل ع ل ك م ت ع ق ل ون And Said [6:151] Say: Come I will recite what your Lord has Forbidden to you - (remember) that you do not associate anything with Him and show kindness to your parents, and do not slay your children for (fear of) poverty - We Provide for you and for them - and do not go near to immoralities, those of them which are apparent and those which are concealed, and do not kill the soul which Allah has Forbidden except for the requirements of justice; this He has Enjoined you with that you may use your intellects. و ق ال ه ل ل ك م م ن ما م ل ك ت أ ي مان ك م م ن ش ر كاء ف ي ما ر ز ق ناك م ف أ ن ت م ف يه س واء ت خاف ون ه م ك خ يف ت ك م أ ن ف س ك م ك ذل ك ن ف صل ا ل يا ت ل ق و م ي ع ق ل ون And Said [30:28] He Strikes for you an example from yourselves: Have you among those whom your right hands possess partners in what We have Given 8 out of 29

9 you for sustenance, so that with respect to it you are alike; you fear them as you fear each other? Thus do We Make the Signs Decisive for a people who are using their intellects. ي ا ه ش ام ث م و ع ظ أ ه ل ال ع ق ل و ر غ ب ه م ف ي ا ل خ ر ة ف ق ال و م ا ال ح ياة الد ن يا إ ل ل ع ب و ل ه و و ل لد ار ا ل خ رة خ ي ر ل ل ذ ين ي ت ق ون أ ف ل ت ع ق ل ون O Hisham! Then He azwj Advised the people of the intellects and Made them to be desirous for the Hereafter, so He azwj Said [6:32] And this world's life is nothing but a play and an idle sport and certainly the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who fear; are you not using your intellects?. ي ا ه ش ام ث م خ و ف ال ذ ين ل ي ع ق ل ون ع ق اب ه ف ق ال ت ع ال ى ث م د م ر ن ا ا ل خ ر ين. و إ ن ك م ل ت م ر ون ع ل ي ه م م ص ب حين. و ب الل ي ل أ ف ل ت ع ق ل ون. O Hisham! Then He azwj Frightened those who are not using their intellects of His azwj Punishment, so the Exalted said [37:136] Then We Destroyed the others [37:137] And you pass by them in the morning [37:138] And at night; Are you not using your intellects? و ق ال إ ن ا م ن ز ل ون ع لى أ ه ل هذ ه ال ق ر ي ة ر ج زا م ن الس ماء ب ما كان وا ي ف س ق ون و ل ق د ت ر ك نا م ن ها آي ة ب ي ن ة ل ق و م ي ع ق ل و ن And Said [29:34] Surely We will cause to descend upon the people of this town a Punishment from heaven, due to their disobedience [29:35] And certainly We have left from it a clear evidence for a people who are using their intellects. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ال ع ق ل م ع ال ع ل م ف ق ال و ت ل ك ا ل م ثال ن ض ر ب ها ل لن اس و ما ي ع ق ل ها إ ل ال عال م و ن O Hisham! The intellect is with the knowledge, so He azwj Said [29:43] And these examples, We Strike these for the people, and none understand them except for the learned. ي ا ه ش ام ث م ذ م ال ذ ين ل ي ع ق ل ون ف ق ال و إ ذا ق يل ل ه م ات ب ع وا ما أ ن ز ل للا قال وا ب ل ن ت ب ع ما أ ل ف ي نا ع ل ي ه آباء نا أ و ل و كان آباه ه م ل ي ع ق ل ون ش ي ئا و ل ي ه ت د ون O Hisham! Then He azwj Condemned those who are not using their intellects, so He azwj Said [2:170] And when it is said to them, Follow what Allah has Revealed, they say: But! We follow what we found our fathers upon. What! Even though their fathers were not using their intellects on anything nor were they guided? و ق ال و م ث ل ال ذ ين ك ف ر وا ك م ث ل ال ذ ي ي ن ع ق ب ما ل ي س م ع إ ل د عاء و ن داء ص م ب ك م ع م ي ف ه م ل ي ع ق ل و ن And Said [2:171] And the example of those who disbelieve is as the example of the one (goat-herd) who calls out to that which hears no more than a call and a cry; deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they are not using their intellects. و ق ال و م ن ه م م ن ي س ت م ع إ ل ي ك أ ف أ ن ت ت س م ع الص م و ل و كان وا ل ي ع ق ل ون And Said [10:42] And among them are those who listen to you intently, but can you make the deaf to hear when they were not using their intellects? 9 out of 29

10 و ق ال أ م ت ح س ب أ ن أ ك ث ر ه م ي س م ع ون أ و ي ع ق ل ون إ ن ه م إ ل ك ا ل ن عام ب ل ه م أ ض ل س ب ي ل [25:44] Or do you reckon that most of them are hearing and using their intellects? They are nothing but like cattle; but, they are straying farther off from the path. و ق ال ل ي قات ل ون ك م ج م يعا إ ل ف ي ق رى م ح ص ن ة أ و م ن و راء ج د ر ب أ س ه م ب ي ن ه م ش د يد ت ح س ب ه م ج م يعا و ق ل وب ه م ش ت ى ذل ك ب أ ن ه م ق و م ل ي ع ق ل ون And Said [59:14] They will not fight against you in a body save in fortified towns or from behind walls; their fighting between them is severe, you may think them as one body, and their hearts are disunited; that is because they are a people who are not using their intellects. و ق ال و ت ن س و ن أ ن ف س ك م و أ ن ت م ت ت ل ون ال ك تاب أ ف ل ت ع ق ل ون And Said [2:44] Are you ordering the people to be good and neglecting your own souls while you read the Book; Are you not using your intellects? ي ا ه ش ام ث م ذ م للا ال ك ث ر ة ف ق ال و إ ن ت ط ع أ ك ث ر م ن ف ي ا ل ر ض ي ض ل وك ع ن س ب يل للا O Hisham! Then Allah azwj Condemned the majority, so He azwj Said [6:116] And if you obey the majority of those in the earth, they will lead you astray from Allah's Way. و ق ال و ل ئ ن س أ ل ت ه م م ن خ ل ق الس ماوات و ا ل ر ض ل ي ق ول ن للا ق ل ال ح م د ل ل ب ل أ ك ث ر ه م ل ي ع ل م و ن And Said [31:25] And if you ask them who Created the skies and the earth, they will be saying: Allah. Say: The Praise is due to Allah; But the majority of them are not knowing. و ق ال و ل ئ ن س أ ل ت ه م م ن ن ز ل م ن الس ماء ماء ف أ ح يا ب ه ا ل ر ض م ن ب ع د م و ت ها ل ي ق ول ن للا ق ل ال ح م د ل ل ب ل أ ك ث ر ه م ل ي ع ق ل و ن [29:63] And if you ask them Who is it that Sends down water from the clouds, then Gives Revives it after its death, they will certainly say, Allah. Say: All Praise is due to Allah. But the majority of them are not using their intellects. ي ا ه ش ام ث م م د ح ال ق ل ة ف ق ال و ق ل يل م ن ع باد ي الش ك ور و ق ال و ق ل يل ما ه م O Hisham! Then Allah azwj Complimented the minority, so He azwj Said [34:13] And very few of My servants are the grateful ones. And Said [38:24] and very few are they. و قال ر ج ل م ه م ن م ن آل ف ر ع و ن ي ك ت م إ يمان ه أ ت ق ت ل ون ر ج ل أ ن ي ق ول ر ب ي للا [40:28] And a believing man of Pharaoh s people who concealed his faith said: Will you slay a man because he says: My Lord is Allah. و ق ال و م ن آم ن و ما آم ن م ع ه إ ل ق ل يل 10 out of 29

11 And Said [11:40] and those who believe, and there did not believe with him but a few. And Said [6:37] but the majority of them are not knowing. و ق ال و لك ن أ ك ث ر ه م ل ي ع ل م ون And Said [5:103] and the majority of them are not using their intellects. And said: The majority of them are not realizing. 13 و ق ال و أ ك ث ر ه م ل ي ع ق ل ون و ق ال و أ ك ث ر ه م ل ي ش ع ر ون ي ا ه ش ام ث م ذ ك ر أ ول ي ا ل ل ب اب ب أ ح س ن الذ ك ر و ح ل ه م ب أ ح س ن ال ح ل ي ة ف ق ال ي ه ت ي ال ح ك م ة م ن ي شاء و م ن ي ه ت ال ح ك م ة ف ق د أ وت ي خ ي را ك ث يرا و ما ي ذ ك ر إ ل أ ول وا ا ل ل باب O Hisham! Then He azwj Mentioned the ones of the understanding with the best of the mentions, and Adorned them with the best of the adornments, so He azwj Said [2:269] He Gives the Wisdom to whomsoever He so Desires to, and whoever is Give the Wisdom, he indeed is Given a lot of good, and none but people of understanding mind. و ق ال و الر اس خ ون ف ي ال ع ل م ي ق ول ون آم ن ا ب ه ك ل م ن ع ن د ر ب نا و ما ي ذ ك ر إ ل أ ول وا ا ل ل با ب And Said [3:7] and those who are firmly rooted in the Knowledge say: We believe in it, it is all from our Lord; and none do mind except those having understanding. و ق ال إ ن ف ي خ ل ق الس ماوات و ا ل ر ض و اخ ت لف الل ي ل و الن هار ل يات ل ول ي ا ل ل باب And Said [3:190] Most surely in the Creation of the skies and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day there are Signs for men who understand. و ق ال أ ف م ن ي ع ل م أ ن ما أ ن ز ل إ ل ي ك م ن ر ب ك ال ح ق ك م ن ه و أ ع مى إ ن ما ي ت ذ ك ر أ ول وا ا ل ل با ب And Said [13:19] Is he then who knows that what has been Revealed to you from your Lord is the Truth like him who is blind? But rather, only those possessing understanding will mind. و ق ال أ م ن ه و قان ت آناء الل ي ل ساج دا و قائ ما ي ح ذ ر ا ل خ ر ة و ي ر ج وا ر ح م ة ر ب ه ق ل ه ل ي س ت و ي ال ذ ين ي ع ل م ون و ال ذ ين ل ي ع ل م ون إ ن ما ي ت ذ ك ر أ ول وا ا ل ل باب And Said [39:9] Safe is He who is obedient during the hours of the night, prostrating himself and standing, cautious of the Hereafter and hopes for the Mercy of his Lord. Say: Are those who know and those who do not know alike? But rather, it is the men of understanding who are mindful. 13 This Verse does not exist in the current version of the Holy Quran. 11 out of 29

12 و ق ال ك تاب أ ن ز ل ناه إ ل ي ك م بار ك ل ي د ب ر وا آيات ه و ل ي ت ذ ك ر أ ول وا ا ل ل با ب And Said [38:29] (It is) a Book We have Revealed to you, Blessed, that they may ponder over its Signs, and that those endowed with understanding may be mindful. و ق ال و ل ق د آت ي نا م وس ى ال ه دى و أ و ر ث نا ب ن ي إ س رائ يل ال ك تاب ه دى و ذ ك رى ل ول ي ا ل ل با ب And Said [40:53] And We Gave Musa the Guidance, and We made the children of Israel inherit the Book, [40:54] A Guidance and a Reminder to the men of understanding. و ق ال و ذ ك ر ف إ ن الذ ك رى ت ن ف ع ال م ه م ن ين And Said [51:55] And continue to remind, for surely the reminder profits the Believers. ت ع ال ى ي ق ول ف ي ك ت اب ه إ ن ف ي ذل ك ل ذ ك رى ل م ن كان ل ه ق ل ب ي ا ه ش ام إ ن للا ي ع ن ي ع ق ل O Hisham! Allah azwj the Exalted is Saying in His azwj Book [50:37] Most surely there is a Reminder in this for him who has a heart or listens Meaning the intellect. و ق ال و ل ق د آت ي نا ل ق مان ال ح ك م ة ق ال ال ف ه م و ال ع ق ل And Said [31:12] And We Gave the Wisdom to Luqman The understanding and the intellect. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ل ق م ان ق ال ل ب ن ه ت و اض ع ل ل ح ق ت ك ن أ ع ق ل الن اس و إ ن ال ك ي س ل د ى ال ح ق ي س ير ي ا ب ن ي إ ن الد ن ي ا ب ح ر ع م يق ق د يم ان و ش ر اع ه ا الت و ك ل و ق ي م ه ا ال ع ق ل و د ل يل ه ا ال ع ل م و غ ر ق ف يه ا ع ال م ك ث ير ف ل ت ك ن س ف ين ت ك ف يه ا ت ق و ى للا و ح ش و ه ا ا ل س ك ان ه ا الص ب ر O Hisham! Luqman as said to his as son: Be humble to the Truth, you will come to be the most intellectual of the people, and that the attractiveness in front of the Truth is of little (value). O my as son! The world is a deep ocean. A lot of learned people have drowned in it, therefore make your ship in it to be the fear of Allah azwj, and the Eman to be its load, and the reliance (upon Allah azwj ) as its sails, and the intellect as its captain, and the knowledge as its indicator (navigator), and the patience as its passenger. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ل ك ل ش ي ء د ل ي ل و د ل يل ال ع ق ل الت ف ك ر و د ل يل الت ف ك ر الص م ت و ل ك ل ش يء م ط ي ة و م ط ي ة ال ع ق ل الت و اض ع و ك ف ى ب ك ج ه ل أ ن ت ر ك ب م ا ن ه ي ت ع ن ه O Hisham! For everything there is an indicator, and the indicator for the intellect is the pondering, and the indicator of the pondering is the silence. And for everything there is a ride, and a ride of the intellect is the humbleness and it would suffice with you as being an ignorant one if you were to indulge in what you have been Forbidden from. ي ا ه ش ام م ا ب ع ث للا أ ن ب ي اء ه و ر س ل ه إ ل ى ع ب اد ه إ ل ل ي ع ق ل وا ع ن للا ف أ ح س ن ه م اس ت ج اب ة أ ح س ن ه م م ع ر ف ة و أ عل م ه م ب أ م ر للا أ ح س ن ه م ع ق ل و أ ك م ل ه م ع ق ل أ ر ف ع ه م د ر ج ة ف ي الد ن ي ا و ا ل خ ر ة 12 out of 29

13 O Hisham! Allah azwj did not Send His azwj Prophets as and His azwj Rasools as to His azwj servant except that they as would be using their as intellects about Allah azwj. Therefore, the best of them as in Answering is the best of them as in understanding, and the most knowledgeable of them as with the Commands of Allah azwj is the best of them as in intellect, and the most perfect of them as in intellect is the highest of them as in status in the world and the Hereafter. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ل ل ع ل ى الن اس ح ج ت ي ن ح ج ة ظ اه ر ة و ح ج ة ب اط ن ة ف أ م ا الظ اه ر ة ف الر س ل و ا ل ن ب ي اء و ا ل ئ م ة ( عليهم الس لم ) و أ م ا ال ب اط ن ة ف ال ع ق ول O Hisham! For Allah azwj, upon the people, are two (kinds of) Proofs an apparent Proof and a hidden Proof. As for the apparent Proofs, so these are the Rasools as, and the Prophets as, and the Imams asws ; and as for the hidden, so these are the intellects. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ال ع اق ل ال ذ ي ل ي ش غ ل ال ح ل ل ش ك ر ه و ل ي غ ل ب ال ح ر ام ص ب ر ه O Hisham! The intellectual is the one whom the Permissible do not pre-occupy him from thanking Him azwj, nor do the Prohibitions overcome his patience. ي ا ه ش ام م ن س ل ط ث ل ثا ع ل ى ث ل ث ف ك أ ن م ا أ ع ان ع ل ى ه د م ع ق ل ه م ن أ ظ ل م ن ور ت ف ك ر ه ب ط ول أ م ل ه و م حا ط ر ائ ف ح ك م ت ه ب ف ض ول ك ل م ه و أ ط ف أ ن ور ع ب ر ت ه ب ش ه و ات ن ف س ه ف ك أ ن م ا أ ع ان ه و اه ع ل ى ه د م ع ق ل ه و م ن ه د م ع ق ل ه أ ف س د ع ل ي ه د ين ه و د ن ي اه O Hisham! The one whom three (things) overcome three (things) so it is as if he is assisted upon the ruination of his own intellect the one who darkens the light of his pondering by the prolongation of his expectancies, and his antics delete his wisdom by the vanities of his speech, and he extinguishes the light of his learning (lessons) by the lustful desires of his self. Thus, it is as if he is assisting himself upon the ruination of his own intellect. And the one who ruins his intellect, his Religion and his world would be spoilt upon him. ي ا ه ش ام ك ي ف ي ز ك و ع ن د للا ع م ل ك و أ ن ت ق د ش غ ل ت ق ل ب ك ع ن أ م ر ر ب ك و أ ط ع ت ه و اك ع ل ى غ ل ب ة ع ق ل ك O Hisham! How can your deeds be Purified in the Presence of Allah azwj and you have pre-occupied your heart from (obeying) the Commands of your Lord azwj and are obeying your own whims upon overcoming your own intellect? ي ا ه ش ام الص ب ر ع ل ى ال و ح د ة ع ل م ة ق و ة ال ع ق ل ف م ن ع ق ل ع ن للا اع ت ز ل أ ه ل الد ن ي ا و الر اغ ب ين ف يه ا و ر غ ب ف يم ا ع ن د للا و ك ان للا أ ن س ه ف ي ال و ح ش ة و ص اح ب ه ف ي ال و ح د ة و غ ن اه ف ي ال ع ي ل ة و م ع ز ه م ن غ ي ر ع ش ير ة O Hisham! The patience upon the loneliness is a sign of the strength of the intellect. So the one who uses his intellect about Allah azwj would isolate himself from the people of the world and the ones who are desirous (for it) therein, and he would be desirous regarding what is in the Presence of Allah azwj ; and it would that Allah azwj would be his Comfort during the fear, and his Companion during the loneliness, and his Richness during the poverty, and his Consolation from without (having) a tribe. ي ا ه ش ام ن ص ب ال ح ق ل ط اع ة للا و ل ن ج اة إ ل ب الط اع ة و الط اع ة ب ال ع ل م و ال ع ل م ب الت ع ل م و الت ع ل م ب ال ع ق ل ي ع ت ق د و ل ع ل م إ ل م ن ع ال م ر ب ان ي و م ع ر ف ة ال ع ل م ب ال ع ق ل 13 out of 29

14 O Hisham! Establish the Truth for the obedience of Allah azwj, and there is no salvation except by the obedience, and the obedience is with the knowledge, and the knowledge is with the learning, and the learning is with the intellectual thought; and there is no knowledge except from a Divine Scholar asws, and the recognition of the knowledge is with the intellect. ي ا ه ش ام ق ل يل ال ع م ل م ن ال ع ال م م ق ب ول م ض اع ف و ك ث ير ال ع م ل م ن أ ه ل ال ه و ى و ال ج ه ل م ر د و د O Hisham! The few deeds from the learned are Accepted (and) multiplied, and the abundant deeds from the people of the opinions and the ignorant ones are rejected. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ال ع اق ل ر ض ي ب الد ون م ن الد ن ي ا م ع ال ح ك م ة و ل م ي ر ض ب الد ون م ن ال ح ك م ة م ع الد ن ي ا ف ل ذ ل ك ر ب ح ت ت ج ار ت ه م O Hisham! The intellectual is pleased with the less from the world along with the wisdom, but he would not be pleased with the less from the wisdom along with the (whole) world. Thus, due to that, their trade is profitable. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ال ع ق ل ء ت ر ك وا ف ض ول الد ن ي ا ف ك ي ف الذ ن وب و ت ر ك الد ن ي ا م ن ال ف ض ل و ت ر ك الذ ن وب م ن ال ف ر ض O Hisham! The intellectual ones are neglecting the vanities of the world, so how (would they not neglect) the sins, and the neglect of the world is from the merits and neglect of the sins is from the Obligations. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ال ع اق ل ن ظ ر إ ل ى الد ن ي ا و إ ل ى أ ه ل ه ا ف ع ل م أ ن ه ا ل ت ن ال إ ل ب ال م ش ق ة و ن ظ ر إ ل ى ا ل خ ر ة ف ع ل م أ ن ه ا ل ت ن ال إ ل ب ال م ش ق ة ف ط ل ب ب ال م ش ق ة أ ب ق اه م ا O Hisham! The intellectual would look at the world and at its inhabitants, so he would know that it cannot be attained except with the difficulties; and he would look at the Hereafter, so he would know that it cannot be attained except with the difficulties. Thus, he would seek with the difficulties the one which remain (forever) from the two. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ال ع ق ل ء ز ه د وا ف ي الد ن ي ا و ر غ ب وا ف ي ا ل خ ر ة ل ن ه م ع ل م وا أ ن الد ن ي ا ط ال ب ة م ط ل وب ة و ا ل خ ر ة ط ال بة و م ط ل وب ة ف م ن ط ل ب ا ل خ ر ة ط ل ب ت ه الد ن ي ا ح ت ى ي س ت و ف ي م ن ه ا ر ز ق ه و م ن ط ل ب الد ن ي ا ط ل ب ت ه ا ل خ ر ة ف ي أ ت يه ال م و ت ف ي ف س د ع ل ي ه د ن ي اه و آخ ر ت ه O Hisham! The intellectuals are ascetic regarding the world and are desirous regarding the Hereafter, because they know that the world is a seeker and is sought, and the Hereafter is a seeker and is sought. Thus, the one who seeks the Hereafter, he would seek the world (to the extent) until it fulfils his sustenance from it, and the one who seeks the world, the Hereafter would seek him, and the death would come to him, so it would spoil his world upon him and (as well as) his Hereafter. ي ا ه ش ام م ن أ ر اد ال غ ن ى ب ل م ال و ر اح ة ال ق ل ب م ن ال ح س د و الس ل م ة ف ي الد ين ف ل ي ت ض ر ع إ ل ى للا ع ز و ج ل ف ي م س أ ل ت ه ب أ ن ي ك م ل ع ق ل ه ف م ن ع ق ل ق ن ع ب م ا ي ك ف يه و م ن ق ن ع ب م ا ي ك ف يه اس ت غ ن ى و م ن ل م ي ق ن ع ب م ا ي ك ف يه ل م ي د ر ك ال غ ن ى أ ب دا O Hisham! The one who intends the abundance without wealth, and at ease his heart from the envy, and the safety in the Religion, so let him beseech to Allah azwj Mighty and Majestic that his intellect is to be perfected. So the one who has intellect would be content with whatever would suffice him, and the one who is contented with 14 out of 29

15 whatever suffices him, would be needless, and the one who is not content with what suffices him, would not achieve the riches, ever. ح ك ى ع ن ق و م ص ال ح ين أ ن ه م ق ال وا ر ب نا ل ت ز غ ق ل وب نا ب ع د إ ذ ه د ي ت نا و ه ب ل نا م ن ل د ن ك ر ح م ة إ ن ك أ ن ت ي ا ه ش ام إ ن للا ال و ه اب ح ين ع ل م وا أ ن ال ق ل وب ت ز يغ و ت ع ود إ ل ى ع م اه ا و ر د اه ا O Hisham! Allah azwj has Related about a righteous people that they were saying [3:8] Our Lord! Do not Let our hearts to deviate after You have Guided us aright, and Grant us Mercy from You; surely You are the Bestower, when they came to know that the hearts do deviate and returns to their blindness and their rejections. م ن ل م ي ع ق ل ع ن للا و م ن ل م ي ع ق ل ع ن للا ل م ي ع ق د ق ل ب ه ع ل ى م ع ر ف ة ث اب ت ة ي ب ص ر ه ا و ي ج د ح ق يق ت ه ا ف ي ق ل ب ه و إ ن ه ل م ي خ ف للا ت ب ا رك اس م ه ل م ي د ل ع ل ى ال ب اط ن ال خ ف ي م ن ل ي ك ون أ ح د ك ذ ل ك إ ل م ن ك ان ق و ل ه ل ف ع ل ه م ص د قا و س ر ه ل ع ل ن ي ت ه م و اف قا ل ن للا ال ع ق ل إ ل ب ظ اه ر م ن ه و ن اط ق ع ن ه He does not fear Allah azwj, the one who does not use his intellect about Allah azwj, and the one who does not use his intellect about Allah azwj, would not have certainty of his heart upon the affirmed recognition to see it and find its reality in his heart; and no one can happen to be like that except the one whose word were endorsed by his deeds, and his private and public (matters) were harmonious, because Allah azwj, Blessed is His azwj Name, does not Indicate upon the hidden (matters), concealed from the intellect, except by the apparent from it and the Spoken about it. ي ا ه ش ام ك ان أ م ير ال م ه م ن ين ( عليه الس لم ) ي ق ول م ا ع ب د للا ب ش يء أ ف ض ل م ن ال ع ق ل و م ا ت م ع ق ل ام ر ئ ح ت ى ي ك ون ف ي ه خ ص ال ش ت ى ال ك ف ر و الش ر م ن ه م أ م ون ان و الر ش د و ال خ ي ر م ن ه م أ م و ل ن و ف ض ل م ال ه م ب ذ ول و ف ض ل ق و ل ه م ك ف وف و ن ص يب ه م ن الد ن ي ا ال ق وت O Hisham! It was so that Amir Al-Momineen asws was saying: Allah azwj has not been worshipped with anything superior than the intellect. And the intellect of a person cannot be completed until there happen to be various characteristics in him The (people would be) secured from (any form of) disbelief and the evil (being exercised) from him, and both the righteous guidance and the goodness be expected from him; he would give away from the excess of his wealth, and he would restrain from the excess of his words, and his share from the world would (just) be the subsistence. ل ي ش ب ع م ن ال ع ل م د ه ر ه الذ ل أ ح ب إ ل ي ه م ع للا م ن ال ع ز م ع غ ي ر ه و الت و اض ع أ ح ب إ ل ي ه م ن الش ر ف ي س ت ك ث ر ق ل يل ال م ع ر و ف م ن غ ي ر ه و ي س ت ق ل ك ث ير ال م ع ر وف م ن ن ف س ه و ي ر ى الن اس ك ل ه م خ ي را م ن ه و أ ن ه ش ر ه م ف ي ن ف س ه و ه و ت م ام ا ل م ر He would never consider himself that he has learned enough his life-time. To be with Allah azwj, although in a very humble state, is far better to him (a person of intelligence) than to live much honoured with others. He would consider it as a lot, the little goodness from others, and he would consider it as little, the abundant goodness from himself; and he would see the people, all of them, better than him, and that he (would consider) within himself as the most evil of them. And it is the complete matter. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ال ع اق ل ل ي ك ذ ب و إ ن ك ان ف يه ه و اه O Hisham! The intellectual would not lie, and even though there are personal desires in him. 15 out of 29

16 ي ا ه ش ام ل د ين ل م ن ل م ر و ة ل ه و ل م ر و ة ل م ن ل ع ق ل ل ه و إ ن أ ع ظ م الن اس ق د را ال ذ ي ل ي ر ى الد ن ي ا ل ن ف س ه خ ط را أ م ا إ ن أ ب د ان ك م ل ي س ل ه ا ث م ن إ ل ال ج ن ة ف ل ت ب يع وه ا ب غ ي ر ه ا O Hisham! There is no Religion for the one who has no magnanimity for him, and there is no magnanimity for the one who has no intellect for him; and that the greatest of the people in worth is the one who does not see the world for himself as a threat. However, there is no price for yourself (your bodies) other than the Paradise, therefore do not sell it for something else. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن أ م ير ال م ه م ن ين ( عليه الس لم ) ك ان ي ق ول إ ن م ن ع ل م ة ال ع اق ل أ ن ي ك ون ف يه ث ل ث خ ص ال ي ج يب إ ذ ا س ئ ل و ي ن ط ق إ ذ ا ع ج ز ال ق و م ع ن ال ك ل م و ي ش ير ب الر أ ي ال ذ ي ي ك ون ف يه ص ل ح أ ه ل ه ف م ن ل م ي ك ن ف يه م ن ه ذ ه ال خص ال الث ل ث ش ي ء ف ه و أ ح م ق O Hisham! Amir Al-Momineen asws was saying: From the signs of an intellectual is that there happen to be three characteristics in him he answers (only) when questioned, speaking when the people are unable to say (anything), and he advises people with the opinion where there is a correctness for them. So the one who does not possess anything from these three characteristics, so he is an idiot. إ ن أ م ير ال م ه م ن ين ( عليه الس لم ) ق ال ل ي ج ل س ف ي ص د ر ال م ج ل س إ ل ر ج ل ف يه ه ذ ه ال خ ص ال الث ل ث أ و و اح د ة م ن ه ن ف م ن ل م ي ك ن ف يه ش ي ء م ن ه ن ف ج ل س ف ه و أ ح م ق Amir Al-Momineen asws said: A man should not sit at the top (podium) of the gathering (presiding over it) except these three characteristics are in him, or (at least) one of these. So the one who does not happen to have anything from these in him, and he sits (presides), so he is an idiot. و ق ال ال ح س ن ب ن ع ل ي ( عليه الس لم (إ ذ ا ط ل ب ت م ال ح و ائ ج ف اط ل ب وه ا م ن أ ه ل ه ا ق يل ي ا اب ن ر س ول للا و م ن أ ه ل ه ا ق ال ال ذ ي ن ق ص للا ف ي ك ت اب ه و ذ ك ر ه م ف ق ال إ ن ما ي ت ذ ك ر أ ول وا ا ل ل باب ق ال ه م أ ول و ال ع ق ول Al-Hassan asws Bin Ali asws said: Whenever you see the needs, so seek them from its rightful ones. It was said, O son asws of Rasool-Allah saww! And who are its rightful ones asws? He asws said: Those asws whom Allah azwj has Related in His azwj Book and Mentioned them asws Saying [13:19] But rather, only those possessing understanding will mind. و ق ال ع ل ي ب ن ال ح س ي ن ( عليه الس لم ) م ج ال س ة الص ال ح ين د اع ي ة إ ل ى الص ل ح و آد اب ال ع ل م اء ز ي اد ة ف ي ال ع ق ل و ط اع ة و ل ة ال ع د ل ت م ام ال ع ز و اس ت ث م ار ال م ال ت م ام ال م ر وء ة و إ ر ش اد ال م س ت ش ير ق ض اء ل ح ق الن ع م ة و ك ف ا ل ذ ى م ن ك م ال ال ع ق ل و ف ي ه ر اح ة ال ب د ن ع اج ل و آج ل And Ali asws Bin Al-Husayn asws said: (Sitting in the) gatherings of the righteous makes one to be virtious, and association with scholars asws (is a means of) enhancing one s intellect, and obedience to the just rulers completes the honour. And an investment of wealth for profit is a dignifying practice, and guiding the consulting one is a fulfilment of the rights of the favour; and restraint from harming (others) is from the perfection of the intellect, and therein is rest for the body, now and later on. ي ا ه ش ام إ ن ال ع اق ل ل ي ح د ث م ن ي خ اف ت ك ذ يب ه و ل ي س أ ل م ن ي خ اف م ن ع ه و ل ي ع د م ا ل ي ق د ر ع ل ي ه و ب ر ج ائ ه و ل ي ق د م ع ل ى م ا ي خ اف ف و ت ه ب ال ع ج ز ع ن ه. ل ي ر ج و م ا ي ع ن ف 16 out of 29

Neither does the intellectual narrate out of fear of being belied, nor does he ask (for help) out of fear of being prevented, nor does he count on what he has no ability over, nor does he hope in what he would be scolded with his hopes, nor does he proceed upon what he fears he is unable to accomplish. 14 ع ل ي ب ن م ح م د ع ن س ه ل ب ن ز ي اد ر ف ع ه ق ال ق ال أ م ير ال م ه م ن ين ( عليه الس لم ) ال ع ق ل غ ط اء ف اس ت ر خ ل ل خ ل ق ك ب ف ض ل ك و ق ات ل ه و اك ب ع ق ل ك ت س ل م ل ك ال م و د ة و ت ظ ه ر ل ك ال م ح ب ة. س ت ير و ال ف ض ل ج م ال ظ اه ر Ali Bin Muhammad, from Sahl Bin Ziyad, raising it, said, Amir Al-Momineen asws said: The intellect is a covering veil, and the merit is an apparent beauty, therefore veil the beauty of your mannerisms by your merit, and fight against your personal desires by your intellect, (and) the cordiality would be submissive to you and the love would manifest for you. 15 ع د ة م ن أ ص ح اب ن ا ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن ع ل ي ب ن ح د يد ع ن س م اع ة ب ن م ه ر ان ق ال ك ن ت ع ن د أ ب ي ع ب د للا ( عليه الس لم ) و ع ن د ه ج م اع ة م ن م و ال يه ف ج ر ى ذ ك ر ال ع ق ل و ال ج ه ل ف ق ال أ ب و ع ب د للا ( عليه الس لم ) اع ر ف وا ال ع ق ل و ج ن د ه و ال ج ه ل و ج ن د ه ت ه ت د وا ق ال س م اع ة ف ق ل ت ج ع ل ت ف د اك ل ن ع ر ف إ ل م ا ع ر ف ت ن ا A number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ali Bin Hadeed, from Sama at Bin Mihran who said, I was in the presence of Abu Abdullah asws, and in his asws presence was a group of the ones in his asws Wilayah, and the mention of the intellect and the ignorance, flowed. So Abu Abdullah asws said: Recognise the intellect and its army and the ignorance and its army, and you would be rightly guided. Sama at (the narrator) said, So I said to him asws, May I be sacrificed for you asws! We do not recognise anything except what you asws have introduced to us. ع ز و ج ل خ ل ق ال ع ق ل و ه و أ و ل خ ل ق م ن الر و ح ان ي ين ع ن ي م ين ال ع ر ش م ن ن ور ه ف ق ال أ ب و ع ب د للا ( عليه الس لم ) إ ن للا ف ق ال ل ه أ د ب ر ف أ د ب ر ث م ق ال ل ه أ ق ب ل ف أ ق ب ل ف ق ال للا ت ب ار ك و ت ع ال ى خ ل ق ت ك خ ل قا ع ظ يما و ك ر م ت ك ع ل ى ج م يع خ ل ق ي So Abu Abdullah asws said: Allah azwj Mighty and Majestic Created the intellect, and it was the first thing Created, from the spiritual (creations), from the right of the Throne, from His azwj Light. So He azwj Said to it: Turn around! So it turned around. Then Said: Come! So it came. So Allah azwj Blessed and High Said: I azwj have Created you as a magnificent creation and Honoured you upon the entirety of My azwj creation. ق ال ث م خ ل ق ال ج ه ل م ن ال ب ح ر ا ل ج اج ظ ل م ان ي ا ف ق ال ل ه أ د ب ر ف أ د ب ر ث م ق ال ل ه أ ق ب ل ف ل م ي ق ب ل ف ق ال ل ه اس ت ك ب ر ت ف ل ع ن ه He asws said: Then He azwj Created the ignorance from the dark wavy ocean. So He azwj Said to it: Turn around! So it turned around. Then Said to it: Come! But it did not come. So He azwj Said to it: You are being arrogant? So when the ignorance saw what Allah azwj had Honoured the intellect with and what He azwj had Granted it, (ignorance) harboured the enmity for it. So the ignorance said, O Lord azwj! This is a creation like me. You azwj Created it, and Honoured it, and Strengthened it, and I am its opposite, and there is not (enough) strength for me in comparison. Therefore, Grant me an army similar to what You azwj had Granted it. So He azwj Said: Yes. But, if you were to disobey Me azwj after that, I azwj shall Throw you and your army out of My azwj Mercy. It said, I have agreed.
