2 Commodore s Report General Manager s Report Well, this is my last entry in the log sheet as your Commodore. Tina and I have had a great time serving you. I was warned at this time last year by a past commodore that being commodore is like having a second job; after a year at the helm I can say it is a fitting description. Serving such a wonderful group of people has made it all worthwhile. I would be remiss if in my last entry I didn t give a State of the Union, so to speak. I would first like to thank everyone that was forced to endure one of my budget speeches in the past 12 months. The bottom line is we are projecting we will be within our budget at the year s end. This was made possible by Bill Parker, the Committee chairs and the House operations (chaired by the Commodore Elect Marty Warren) staying below their budgets. We are approximately 7% below our income projections due to a decrease in membership. The house operation is well above the budgeted income even after experiencing a $10,000 loss in October. The house performing above expectations along with the committees curtailing spending has kept us in the black for the year to date. I must add; who would have thought we would be preparing for a named storm in November? We probably spent $5, removing the electrical connections from the piers and evacuating the restroom trailer and storage sheds. The budget has been a challenge this year as always, but with everyone s cooperation and teamwork we have been successful. We have a new chef, Chef Daniel look for new delicious items on the menu. Don t worry; he has been forewarned about the old favorites. Don t forget the New Year s Eve Party Please join me to ring in the New Year! It has been a great year at the GYC! The member participation in club events has been outstanding. The hard work and dedication by all of the Board, Committee chairs, Committee members and volunteers has been inspiring. We were able to experience many of our traditions and reminisce about our 75 th year history. A BIG MERRY CHRISTMAS and A VERY HAPPY/ PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR to all!! You have made my 2009 year a very happy and fulfilling year, THANK YOU! We recently had an accident with one of our servers and a dining table -- the table won!! A very big THANK YOU to a quick thinking, quick acting Member (Melinda Sullivan). She stepped up and provided excellent First Aid while stopping the bleeding and turning a bad situation into a manageable one. Again, Thank You Melinda Sullivan!! Thanks to all Members for contributing to the Employees Christmas Fund; the employees Christmas will be Brighter due to your generosity!! December is a busy and joyful period in and around the GYC! First, Thank You Thursdays will continue for all 5 Thursdays in December with half priced. Secondly, don t forget that the GYC Logo/Gift shop is an excellent place to buy Christmas gifts for those special people on your list!! As a reminder, the plans for any changes in operating hours are as follows: the Club will close on Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 Dec) at 3:00pm. The Club will also be closed on Christmas Day (Friday, 25 Dec) and open on the regular schedule Saturday, 26 Dec 09. We will be having our traditional New Year s Eve party. The Club will be closed on New Year s Day!! We will open Saturday, 2 Jan 2010, at our regular operating hours!! The New Year s Eve party will start at 8:30 pm with lite appetizers, music by THE BOOGIE MEN starts at 9:00pm til 1:00am. A Breakfast Buffet will be served just after Midnight!!! Please help me give the new Chef a GYC welcome!! He is Daniel Murphy, and he comes with plenty of experience and has been receiving plenty of compliments on his culinary skills!! We are Proud to add Chef Daniel to our GYC staff. Stop by and say HELLO!! Again, thanks for a GREAT YEAR!! My sincere thanks to everyone for your support his year! ENJOY!! The YTD profit is $29,621; we are $45,890 ahead of budget. Total revenues in October for food and bar were $58,826, similar to the total revenue for September. Through November 15, the November revenue is tracking similar to October. "Outside event" revenues for October were 26% of the total food and bar revenue. -The club has numerous holiday parties booked for the month of December, with many of those parties being held in the ballroom, due to the size of the parties. Recognizing that September, October and November are traditionally "down" months financially for the house operations, we are hoping that these parties will bring in substantial revenue to the club. -The club has a new chef, Daniel Murphy, who joined the club on November 16. Dan has an extensive restaurant background and is very enthusiastic about working at the club. He plans to bring his creativity to the menu and we look forward to his expertise. -The ½ price lunch buffet on Thursdays continues to draw good crowds on what is traditionally the slowest lunch day. The addition of steak to Wednesday night dinner has been a huge hit. We are beginning a "Birthday/Anniversary Dinner" once a month, where those members eat compliments of the club. Also, early next year, look for the "Taste of the Town" dinners, where we will have different Coast restaurants come to the club, so our members can dine at our club while experiencing different local restaurants. -Thank you for your continued use of the club and your input. 4 Entertainment! It has been my pleasure to serve as Entertainment Chairman for I feel like we have had a great year considering the weak economy and I want to thank everyone involved in the planning and participation of the events that we have had. This particularly includes our wonderful staff and the extra efforts they have made to ensure that all of our events have run smoothly. I also want to thank the Commodore and the Board Members for providing excellent leadership and support throughout the year. I am happy to report that we were able to provide a wide variety of entertainment events and remain under budget. Back by popular request we have Ronny Broussard performing on December 5 th performing in the Chart Room Live. All of our Chart Room Live nights have been great this year and we hope to continue in this tradition in the future. We wrap up New Year s Eve with the Boogie Men on Thursday December 31 st. and this should be a great evening of fun and dancing. I want to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas season and appreciate your support of the Gulfport Yacht Club. Sincerely, Mark Schloegel Ronny Broussard Auxiliary Happenings The Ladies Auxiliary enjoyed a delicious lunch at the November meeting held on the 18th. Candace Ozerden, Mary Frances Martin, Dottie Long, Elaine Schmidtling and Shirley Pate provided gracious hospitality and delightful table decorations. Members were entertained by a special visit from the Perk (MSGCCC Perkinson Campus) Show Choir Mississippi Sound. They are a lively group of young people attending college on scholarships and utilizing their very special voice and dance talents. Our annual Breakfast with Santa is scheduled for December 12th at 10:00am. This promises to be a delight for the children with food and crafts and a special visit from Santa. This year we are asking attendees to bring a new, unwrapped toy (suggested $10 value) to be donated to Toys for Tots. Mark your calendars and don t forget your camera! The December meeting on the 16th will be hosted by the outgoing officers and will feature live Christmas music. Make your reservations by Monday, December 14th. Sailing Summary for 2009 Sailing is on the rise at GYC as participation is up for both juniors and adults. New families taking sailing and also traveling to regattas has increased this year. We have invested a lot of time and effort by letting our juniors sailors participate in Sr. regattas to gain valuable experience. Our expectations are that this will pay off in the long term! 2009 is by far the best year for GYC sailing since the storm. We hope to continue this trend into year 2010 and beyond by getting more members involved and letting them know how great the sport of sailing and/ or boating really is. Thank you Sam Vasquez, parents and all the volunteers, including GYC staff for making this year such a great success. Can t wait until next year! Sam Hopkins, Sailing Committee Chairman Capdevielle Sailing GYC has participated in all 16 GYA Capdevielle Regattas for the 3rd year in a row. 2nd Place Jr. Lipton Pensacola Yacht Club; GYC will host regatta in 2010 (July) Jr. Lipton Team Ana Gayle Christian (skipper) last year as Jr. Claire Yoste (skipper) last year as Jr. Sam Hopkins (skipper) 2 nd year Raemie Ladner (crew) 1 st year Alexander Hopkins (crew) 1 st year Sam Vasquez - Coach CONGRATULATIONS TEAM! Katack Tracking was again used to track and replay all races on a TV screen. GYC is the only club in the GYA to offer such a treat sailors loved it! We will be hosting the 2011 Challenge Cup. With the help of the past Commodores Club, the sailing committed has established a goal for GYC to field a three boat team for this regatta. GYC will host the GYA winter Meeting for the 2 nd year in a row Jan 8-10, Friday there will be a Basic Race Management Class with meetings, seminars and demos on Saturday. We encourage all members to take part in this event. Please go to GYC or GYA websites for more information. GYC is planning on putting bids in for a National or Regional Championship Regatta. We have a great Race Management Team and would like to show sailors from other areas how good we are! Our RC team has been a huge help to other clubs as well by assisting in running races and getting them set up online. This also includes lending two Flying Scot sailboats to help out in running National US Sailing events such as the Mallory and Adams Championship held at BWYC this past September.

7 Individual Accomplishments Jessie Yoste was a key part in all of the Tulane Sailing Team's accomplishments. She has traveled all over the country racing and still maintains excellent Grade Pont Average. We wish her luck on her next travels. Ana Gayle Christian and Claire Yoste were the top juniors at the 2009 Women s Sunfish North Americans held at Bay Waveland Yacht Club. Both were also part of our Jr. Lipton Team. We have the largest traveling group of young sailors and parents amongst the Gulf Coast clubs. At times you will see up to 25 members at GYA regattas. Our GYC Optimist and Laser fleets are on the rise again! Welcome Chef Daniel! Cooking has been Daniel Murphy s passion since he was 17 years old, helping out in his grandparent s place in Bay St. Louis, Dan B s Restaurant and Lounge. Since then, Daniel graduated from the Culinary School at USM Gulf Coast campus in Long Beach. He spent four years with Jourdan River Grill in the Casino Magic and a year at Commander s Palace in New Orleans. With experience under his belt, Daniel bought and renovated Dan B s and opened Daniel s South Beach Restaurant. You may have seen Daniel on WLOX preparing his award-winning Red Beans & Rice or Gumbo. We re delighted to welcome Chef Daniel to the Club and invite you to stop by, meet him and enjoy old favorites and new tastes!
